Imagine if Wix invested in open source? Imagine if Wix gained on WordPress?Imagine if Wix conquered our beloved CMS?Imagine if Wix focused on one area in WordPress: Data Liberation. I don't think the closed-source CMS will supplant tens of thousands of WordPress professionals 1-click installing WordPress for their clients any time soon, even with their aggressive marketing tactics. With a whole section devoted to their open source initiative documented at wix.engineering, including a behind the scenes look at how they scale their platform for 100's of thousands of users, it's obvious they know the importance of connecting with developers. So why not call the bluff? Matt Mullenweg just mentioned in his summer update at WordCamp Europe that the Data Liberation initiative isn't moving as fast as he'd hoped. He wants to unlock customer website content (and other data) proprietary CMS's like Wix hold hostage from their users, if they decide to migrate away. What an amazing opportunity for Wix (and others) to take part in for the greater good of WordPress, open source, and all users of the web!I agree with one of Kevin Geary's points: I don't believe there's a master plan coming from the sidelines at Wix. They are a product and profit first company, their core product isn't open source. Automattic on the other hand, “started” with an open source product and now it's trying to build the profit first part of their business. More of that in my last post, What Would We Do with the Keys to the Kingdom? Open source winning doesn't mean that WordPress wins at every front. It shouldn't. It can't, really. We've lost the plot if we think that our goal is to build a defense against these other CMS platforms. Instead of devising a timeline where WordPress must win at all costs, we should be advocating and demonstrating the WordPress way to these commercial entities. Look, I don't think it's an easy task, but if anyone from Wix is listening — spending a few $100k in engineering time to create a plugin that sync's data to/from a WordPress install is probably money well spent — much more than sponsoring a YouTuber. In the end, users win, which is the ultimate goal. The optimist in me hopes that the more proprietary brands sees the value in this type of portability, the more they might be enticed to go deeper investing in other parts of open source. Heck, imagine if you could install the Gravity Forms plugin on your WordPress site AND a Wix site — what a world that would be. But I'm not foolish, I know that these are epic challenges and largely not part of mainstream software's agenda, or Automattic's for that matter. I also know that the idea of wanting other platforms to look more attractive for developers means that WordPress could certainly look less appealing through the same lens. There's a model here that we've halfway unearthed. It's worked for 21 years. Instead of the goal to have WordPress installed everywhere, maybe it's the impression of our community that should be spread first. Do we need to be more than 50% of the web? Can Wix and others have their share so long as they become good stewards of open source? My fear isn't that other platforms will conquer WordPress, but that open source WordPress in collaboration with Automattic can't move fast enough to find its footing. Loose terrain not just built on the rough edges of UI & UX decisions, but the lack of deep bonds threaded throughout the community. The stuff that gets challenged every day. More transparency from leadership, Automattic truly investing in partnership with us, and community members treating everyone with respect and integrity — across the board. Finally, a problem AI can't solve, WordPress thriving because of humans. In the battle for a dominate CMS, it's hard to pick a winner or a loser, because the real fight should be for more choice, everywhere.  ★ Support this podcast ★

Some of us love working with CSS. It's fun, pretty easy to learn, and gets the job done. Others… not so much. It's boring, hard to master, and you end up doing things incorrectly all the time! Over the years, there's been many attempts to make CSS easier to write and work with… literally dozens. Today on the show we have Kevin Geary, the founder of Automatic CSS (ACSS), which is a utility framework for WordPress page builders. Its aim is to make modern CSS available for all to use, and to implement this inside of the tools that you're already using - Page Builders, and to grow the number of page builders which they support. Currently, they cover Oxygen and Bricks, but hope to grow to cover Gutenberg, Zion Builder and Cwicly. The idea is that they do a lot of the heavy lifting for you, so that much of the regular work that you might have to create right at the start of a project is taken care of. We get into what the project can do and how it can save you time. What can it control and how 'heavy' it is, or isn't?

Building a website, setting it up for SEO, and developing content in order to launch your marketing strategy is extremely important for any successful business. It’s also one of the most underappreciated aspects of your business. That’s why I invited Kevin Geary, CEO of DigitalGravy, which specializes in websites and SEO, to sit down and talk with me about the nuances of doing it intelligently. He’s also the Founder of DigitalAmbition, which helps companies learn how to start, grow, or scale their businesses online. Altogether he has over 15 years of experience in these areas, which makes him a great person to spill the beans on this topic. We specifically talk about: What types of websites are there (landing pages, one pagers, full websites) Which is the world’s best website framework to use? What kinds of pages and content must you have? What is a Responsive website? What is SEO? What’s the difference between Global and Local SEO? What are backlinks and how do you get them? What is Domain Authority and how do you improve it? What are keywords and how do you rank on Google for them? Shorttail vs Longtail keywords Shorter vs longer articles What’s the difference between doing a website yourself and having a specialist design and develop one for you?

Midweek Motivation is a weekly episode featuring the wisdom and stories of host Tommy Cakes. This episode is all about adding fun to get stuff done (fun to done).  Many of us set goals and resolutions, only to fall apart or abandon them on Day 2.  Why is that?  Maybe the problem is that you relate your goals to dreadful toil and bloodletting instead of enjoying the process and having some fun!  In case you are having trouble understanding the audio file, the following is a translation of the audio file from host Tommy Cakes. Who is Tommy Cakes? Live on the Small Scale Life Podcast, it is Midweek Motivation featuring Tommy Cakes. Hey, how are you?  I am Tommy Cakes.  Who am I?  I'm a guy from someplace, friends with some people and doing some things.  Don't worry about it! What I can tell you is that I am in the import and export business. I import knowledge I export that information at premium prices! I will give you a little coastal cosmopolitan insight and motivation weekly on Small Scale Life Introduction – Fun to Done This is a Late Week Motivation this week. What can I say?  Business has been good and keeping Tommy Cakes on the run.  This is a good thing: it means more stuff is happening and Tommy is getting paid!  Fortunately, I have some time to relax before I go to the lounge, so I am going to get this done for you! Many of us set lofty goals and resolutions with the best intentions.  We dream big and then make grand announcements to all of our family and friends.  We say things like, “This time is different; I am ready.  This is my chance to change!  My goal is X!” We see this all the time at the start of a new year.  As we talked about in Episode 13, we concoct all kinds of goals and resolutions, and by the end of January, 64% of us have stopped trying.  By March 1st, 80% of us have dropped off.  Haven’t you noticed it at the gym, pool or in the sauna recently?  There are a lot less waiting for a machine, a lane or bench space for the gun show to begin. Why is that? Goals and Resolutions Don’t Work We have the best intentions when we start with our big goal and resolutions.  We don’t intend to fail.  We want change, but then something happens. Psychologically, we associate goals and resolutions with pain, misery and drudgery.  Who wants to be miserable eating kale when you can have some fantastic lasagna, red wine and cannoli? We see this with people trying to lose weight.  They set a goal, and then they think the quickest way to get to done is to start running, yet they can hardly walk around the block.  After two days of jogging, they are so sore they can’t even move!  This destroys motivation, and then the poor person gives up.  Kevin Geary talked about this in an interview here on Small Scale Life.  Michael Bell also talked about this during his discussion about fitness and weight lifting in Season 2, Episode 25. Midweek Motivation: Fun to Done Instead of pushing a massive bolder up a steep hill, we all need to rethink our goals and resolutions and inject the fun to done mentality into our everyday lives. Why not?  The project or work needs to get done somehow! Instead of hating to eating kale or broccoli, why not add a little butter to it? Instead of running or jogging, why not go for a hike in a beautiful place or walk with your spouse or the dog? Notice I did not equate the two! Instead of swimming laps in a pool, why not swim with your kids or in a lake? Instead of working out in a stale, sweaty gym, why not work in the garden or yard? Inject the fun to done mentality into your goals and resolutions.  Make it an adventure or a journey.  Stop making it a miserable marathon of sweat, blood and tears.  Identify something you like to do and incorporate your goals into that activity.  You might find that you get things done AND have some fun while doing it.  After all, how do you think Tommy Cakes got on the air in the first place? That’s all I got this week.  Add some fun into your lives!  This is Tommy Cakes, and I’ll see you next week!  Bada boom, bada bing! “Finish: Give Yourself the Gift of Done” This episode was inspired by author Jon Acuff in his book “Finish: Give Yourself the Gift of Done.”  As a person who has “squirrel syndrome,” which is a trait of ENFP personality types, I have found that adding some fun into my work and my goals has helped me accomplish so many more things.  Why?  Because those fun things are so much more enjoyable to do and complete! Not everything is going to be fun.  Taxes are boring, painting a room is tedious and filing reports is downright dull.  However, you can overcome that and get things done. In the book (particularly Chapter 4), Jon Acuff has some great techniques for getting projects done and goals achieved.  I recommend you listen or read his book today!  It is actually a fun read!  Get after it, and add fun to done to your life! Special Thanks from Tommy Cakes I would like to thank Greg Burns from Natures Image Farm and Doneil Freeman from Freeman Family Farms for the INSPIRATION to do this Midweek Motivation Podcast.  You two ARE the wind beneath my wings! The once touted “job security” within the statist-servile society is become less and less stable as time goes on. With most folks being employed by major corporations and the seemingly endless acquisitions and mergers, more people are finding themselves laid off, bringing their financial situation into an uncertain state. But, with that uncertainty comes new […] The post Freedom Through a Lifestyle Business with Kevin Geary (LUA Podcast #50) appeared first on Liberty Under Attack.

What do you do if you fear eating off-plan food or you can't go a day without supplements? Or, alternatively, if you can't seem to make any healthy changes stick?  You may need to reexamine your relationship with food and health.  Today we speak with Kevin Geary, who has developed a great program to help you self-assess where this might be coming from and, more importantly, what you can do to overcome it.

The Problem: The government has lied to us about food for nearly forever. From unnecessary fears about saturated fats to a ridiculous idea that we need 8 servings of grains a day. Face it, we’ve been duped. Their food pyramid is a scam, but does that really surprise us? Kevin’s Solution: Build a podcast and online fitness and wellness platform based on his own, personal experience from being unhappy with his own health and how he transformed (aka rebooted) his own body. Complete Show Notes: Kevin went through a personal health transformation in 2009. He went for a physical and the doctor told him that he had high blood pressure and was close to becoming a diabetic. He likes to say that he “dieted” up to a weight of 225 lbs. The combination of calorie restriction and excessive exercise worked for a while, but then he’d crash and binge and lose all gains. He decided that something more permanent was needed. Kevin decided that he had a poor relationship with food and became very curious about his OWN body and how it works and wants rather than what some government or doctor tells him what will build a successful food relationship. At the time, Kevin was the co-owner and instructor of a martial arts school at the time and wanted professional change too. During his own body transformation, some of his students started to take notice and asked him if he could help them. This demand slowly turned into a business opportunity. Remember, if there’s demand there’s a potential business opportunity. So he emailed his list from the karate business and created a couples health and wellness program. It was successful! He had 7 couples that wanted to join and the Rebooted brand was started! You don’t want to miss the part where we discuss sugar and how it’s actually a drug; hooking into your body and making you physiologically dependant. Yes, there’s a withdrawal period from sugar and Kevin chats about why it’s wise to take some time to be curious about your possible dependence. Food Pyramid Both Kevin and myself aren’t big fans of the state-sponsored food pyramid and remain quite skeptical. We discuss the origins of the pyramid and why it could have been politically manipulated rather than actually being created for our actual benefit. Sounds like a gov program, no? For liberty-minded people, this is a MUST listen podcast. We’ve gotta take care of ourselves, we all know this, but Kevin breaks it down in very libertarian language. Remember, property rights are derived from the body so if you respect property then keep getting closer to the root. Keep building freedom! HELP Episode 9: Restarting My Engine 2017 is flying by a light speed.  January, February and March are rapidly fading into the history books.  How are you doing on your health goals? I have to be honest: I am restarting on my health goals for 2017.  I really haven't written about my health goals or talked about them at all in 2017.  As I discuss in the podcast, I punched out after Halloween last year and just tried not thinking about exercise, tracking food and pounds on the scale.  As I look at how the year ended and new year started, I failed to achieve my big goal, and I just decided to punt and regroup. Restarting my engine is critical to getting back in the fight.  I have change from always being on defense to rolling forward on offense.  You cannot do that sitting on the couch, behind a microphone, or writing blog posts.  It is time to move and get active.  This podcast summarizes my four point plan to restart my engine for 2017 and the rest of my life. David DeLugas and I discuss: the problems created by divorce + family court - school attendance: how schools create criminals out of parents - is there an anti-family ideology at work? - CPS intrusions - the public's assumption of benevolence when it comes to bureaucracies - zero tolerance - Lenore Skenazy and free-range kids - helicopter parenting enforced by law - the long-term costs of over-parenting by government From ParentsUSA.org: The Voice for Parents in the USA. Relying only on the U.S. Constitution, the National Association of Parents preserves and supports the parent-child relationship and the right of parents to raise their own child as they see fit, so long as the child is not harmed through strategic litigation and through education and lobbying to shape public policy. Rebooted Body with Kevin Geary - HELP 7 Have you ever struggled with diet plans?  Do you feel overwhelmed with information from family, friends, media, celebrities, and even popular television shows telling you what you should and shouldn't do to lose weight?  How many times have you started a plan, had some success, and then put that weight back on (or put even more weight on your body)?  Have you ever just wanted to just wipe it all away and start over? You aren't alone if you answered "yes" to one or more of those questions.  Let me be honest with you: I am there right now.  I answered "yes" to all of those questions tonight.  Every. Single. One.  I wish it wasn't the case; I wish I could report that things were going splendidly, and I was well on my way to getting fit and losing weight.  That would be a complete bullsh*t. Drew Sample and I recently interviewed Kevin Geary, blogger, podcaster and creator of Rebooted Body.  As he states on Rebooted Body, Kevin is a "leading authority on the psychology of eating. Hogtoberfest and Tribe - HELP 6 What in God's name is Hogtoberfest? Well, ladies and gentlemen, it is a the gathering of people at Nature's Image Farm in Ohio for learning the old ways of slaughtering and processing hogs.  As you will find out in this episode of the Healthy Lifestlye Podcast, it was much more than just processing pork.  Hogtoberfest was about learning the old ways and rituals and adopting them.  It was about sharing the experience, learning skills and breaking bread (and drinking meads, ciders and beers).  Most importantly, it was about forging new relationships and building a small community, a tribe, of homesteaders, urban farmers, beekeepers and their families.  In a world of "plastic fantastic", smart phones, technology and isolation, gatherings like these are necessary.  The lone wolf depicted in Hollywood and today's culture is a lie.  Instead, a group of like-minded individuals, the tribe, is necessary to get stuff done, share resources and lean on each other when "times get tough, or even when they don't." Kevin Geary (previous guest of this podcast) brings me on his Revolutionary Parent Radio to discuss raising kids who have entrepreneurial know-how. You can't teach entrepreneurship. Attempts to do so are silly. But, you can provide an environment that allows the entrepreneurial spark we all have to grow. School and authoritarian structures do just the opposite. The best thing is to first do no harm. Get out of the way. Remove the things that artificially increase the cost of failure, dampen curiosity and experimentation, and provide too-quick answers from experts to be memorized and regurgitated. Even if your kid will never start a business, the traits being crushed through the conveyor belt mindset are the very traits needed to succeed at any form of employment in the near future. Check out Kevin's stuff at revolutionaryparent.com.

060 Kevin Geary: Decode Your Cravings

Wellness Force Radio

When you hear the word, “craving,” what comes to mind? It might be a feeling or an itch, that if left unscratched, will eventually take on a life of it's own. What we now know is that cravings can be unnatural or natural depending on the manipulator that creates it based on satisfying our deepest physical and social needs. This week on Wellness Force Radio, Holistic Health Coach Kevin Geary of Rebooted Body shares how we can identify our "manipulators" to then stop using superficial cravings as a means of instant gratification. Decode Your Cravings Do you crave a McDonald’s Big Mac or a large ice cream sundae after a long day? Or maybe a large glass of ice cold water in the summer? Some cravings are natural and healthy; our body's voice that has spoken to us for Millenia to support health, vitality, and satisfy our soul. But having a sugary smoothie will not help us satisfy what we are truly missing from our lives. What we really crave are physical and social factors such as energy, acceptance, and a life purpose. It’s never too late to begin taking a closer look at yourself and discover what you’re truly craving in your life. When we take time to figure out our stress factors and what we crave, we can get to a place of self-acceptance and feel satisfied with ourselves. When we really look deep inside ourselves, we can find fulfillment and finally get the fit life that we want. What is a Craving vs. a Superficial Craving? A craving is something that is a human need for a specific purpose such as survival; to be happy; or other core human needs. A superficial craving is more of a desire such as a desire for a cup of hot coffee in the morning or something sweet as an afternoon snack. When we can’t satisfy real human cravings, it can increase our superficial cravings and bring on a great deal of stress so that we easily turn to different coping mechanisms such as eating unhealthy foods. Human cravings that we need to satisfy to end superficial cravings can include: Safety Mobility Movement Love and Relationships Social Acceptance Purpose Health and Vitality Self Actualization Autonomy What Are Our Manipulators? All of us have very different backgrounds that involve stressors and factors that keep us from reaching our health and fitness goals. These are referred to as BioPsychoSocial Manipulators. One specific manipulator is perfection. If we feel the need to have specific meal plans, workouts, and other specialized plans to reach fitness and body success, this need for perfection can actually have a negative effect on ourselves both physically and emotionally. If we’re perfectionists and we end up not following a specific diet, we would feel bad if we eat something that’s not part of the meal plan. If we didn’t do every set in a workout, or if we didn’t meet a weight goal by the summer, we’d be negative towards ourselves and get nowhere in the end. BioPsychoSocial Manipulators such as perfection are distractions that keep us from reaching our goals in a positive manner. Other BioPsychoSocial Manipulators can include: Willpower Shame Guilt Anxiety Grief Poor sleep Nutritional poverty Cluttered environment Peer pressure Chronic illness Why We Need A Why The Fitness Industry likes to tell us that we need to look a certain way or we need to be a specific pants size to be healthy. Therefore, we set up goals for ourselves based on that idea and force ourselves workout everyday or only eat salads for a month because we think it will get us to our fitness goals. But if you’re using willpower and forcing yourself to do a workout or diet that you don’t like, then you are more likely to fail than to succeed. Willpower is a manipulator and it’s keeping you from reaching your goals and has no means to help you reach them in a much more positive means of fitness. Instead of having willpower, what you need to do is to question yourself “Why?”. Why do you want to set a fitness goal? Why do you have this intention to eat healthy? If you have a massive why instead of a superficial why that’s been given to you by the Fitness Industry, then you’re going to be able to overcome your obstacles and get to your goal.   More About Kevin Geary Kevin Geary is the founder of RebootedBody.com and host of the Rebooted Body Podcast. Whenever an activity gets a new, revolutionary approach, bystanders always seem to require it to result in perfection, while old ways remain isolated from such rigorous standards. Same goes for a topic that is discussed in today's episode with Kevin Geary, who argues for an authentic way to solve challenges instead of copying known patterns. Kevin talks about how he applied an authentic way to solving issues during his classroom and taekwondo teachings, through communication and empathy development in place of punishment and shaming which may create obedience but will not change behavior. My second collaboration with Kevin Geary, integrative health coach and founder of RebootedBody.com. Our discussion is built around two emails I received from listeners, each facing different challenges in their quests for health and fitness. WARM-UP: -The origins of RebootYourKids.com EMAILS DISCUSSED: #1: I was listening to your podcast about procrastination and you mentioned your diet. You said that you ate a lot of garbage and came up with excuses on why it is you can't or don't eat well. This resonates with me so much! I was wondering if you had any advice on getting the ball rolling with dietary changes. As someone who is an incredibly picky eater and doesn't know the first thing about what the human body needs, the task of eating well seems overwhelming. #2: I was introduced to the Low Carb/Bulletproof Diet via your show. I believe you were chatting with either Wes Bertrand or Richard and Tony about the diet - and how following it had given you more energy and an overall improvement in health. Without any further study or research, I decided to give the diet a try - that being a diet consisting of: no wheat, pasta, grains; very few fruits; lots of grass-fed beef & butter, organic chicken, vegetables, coconut oil, and saturated fats. One year and six months later, my health was in egregious condition. I developed a thyroid condition that resulted in bulging eyes; I developed frontal bossing (enlarged, protruding forehead); I developed TMJ and tongue thrust, which has resulted in slower speech. I also was suffering from both physical and mental lassitude - terrible brain fog, terrible fitness. What I listed above is just what is coming to mind at the moment; there is more, but I think that will do for now. My question to you is this: Assuming that you are still following the diet, how do you feel? Have you noticed any changes in your appearance: bulging eyes, frontal bossing, tooth decay, etc? Would you say that you are in better health since adhering to the Low Carb lifestyle? I'd really like to hear from you, and I hope I'm not being too snoopy. There is so much more I'd like to say, but I don't want to flood you with a tomb of haphazard thoughts. Some of what you'll discover in REM Rehab The dark side of poor sleep -- exactly what it does to your body (in laymans terms) that makes you fat and sick. The dozens of hidden actions you take each and every day that rob you of sleep and how to fix them. How to eat specifically for better, deeper, more restorative sleep -- which foods to include and which to avoid. What a perfect bedtime routine looks like from 2 hours out -- a step by step guide to setting yourself up for success. How to "calibrate your cave" and build an environment for PERFECT sleep, every single night. Sleep hacks, strategic supplementation, advice for dealing with specific sleep problems, and SO MUCH MORE...
