Most people come to permaculture because of a desire to produce their own food and it is to be fair a huge part of the discipline. In fact people often say that permaculture is a system of “permanent agriculture”. This is understandable as even the founders have on occasion said such things or at least things you can interpret this way. The key though is to understand that when David Holmgren and Bill Mollison created this system, it didn't exist. While obvious it is the kind of thing we tend to gloss over. When they began and wrote Permaculture One it did indeed focus almost exclusively … Continue reading →

fWotD Episode 2763: Susanna Hoffs Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Wednesday, 27 November 2024 is Susanna Hoffs.Susanna Lee Hoffs (born January 17, 1959) is an American singer, songwriter, guitarist, and actress. She, Debbi Peterson, and Vicki Peterson founded the Bangles in 1981. Their debut album, All Over the Place, (1984) was acclaimed by critics but sold poorly. Their second album, Different Light, (1986) was also warmly received by critics and was certified double-platinum in 1987 and triple-platinum in 1994. It contained the US number two single "Manic Monday" written by Prince and the number one single "Walk Like an Egyptian". The group's third album, Everything (1988), included the US top ten charting "In Your Room" and number one "Eternal Flame", both written by Hoffs with Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly. Hoffs was lead vocalist on five of the seven Columbia singles by the Bangles, which contributed to a public perception that she was a lead singer, even though all four members took lead vocals across their output. Following tensions including resentment at Hoffs's perceived leadership and the stress of touring, the band split in 1989. It reformed in 1999 and released the albums Doll Revolution (2003) and Sweetheart of the Sun (2011).Hoff's first solo album, When You're a Boy (1991), was followed by Susanna Hoffs (1996). Neither of the releases proved to be as popular as the Bangles' albums, although they yielded two charting singles in the US, the top 40 hit "My Side of the Bed", and "All I Want". She recorded several songs for films and formed the faux-British 1960s band Ming Tea with Mike Myers and Matthew Sweet. Hoffs teamed with Sweet to produce Under the Covers, a series of cover song albums. Her 2012 album Someday was followed by two more cover albums Bright Lights (2021) and The Deep End (2023).Hoffs's first novel, This Bird Has Flown, a romantic comedy about a struggling musician, was published by Little Brown in 2023. It received favorable reviews, and Universal Pictures purchased the rights to the novel for a screen adaptation. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:06 UTC on Wednesday, 27 November 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Susanna Hoffs on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm generative Ruth.
Arcana Coelestia 1175. Internal worship, which springs from love and charity, is worship itself, and that external worship without that internal is not worship at all. Making internal worship external however consists in making external worship essential instead of internal, which is the reverse of worship itself. It is like saying that internal worship without external is no worship, when in reality external worship without internal is no worship at all. Such is the religion of people who separate faith from charity. That is to say, they make matters of faith more important than matters of charity, or rather, they make things which constitute cognitions of faith more important than the things which constitute life, and so make outward forms more important than inner essentials. All external worship is the outward form of internal worship, for internal worship is the inner essential itself. Third Round posts are short audio clips taken from Round 3 comments offered in the online Logopraxis Life Group meetings. The aim is to keep the focus on understanding the Text in terms of its application to the inner life along with reinforcing any key LP principles that have been highlighted in the exchanges.

Pontius Pilate is a relatively minor figure in the gospels of the New Testament, but one who plays a vital role as the Roman official in charge of Jesus' sentencing. Given that he's the face of Rome in the New Testament Gospels, he's presented in a surprisingly positive light! The same is true for his appearances in some other early Christian writings. To try and get to the bottom of exactly why the official representative of the big, bad Roman empire is presented as such a sympathetic figure, we're going to be taking a look at one of these non-canonical texts in a bit more detail.

Draw a Scientist is a test developed in 1983 to explore children's perspectives of scientists and how stereotypical views can emerge at an early age, influenced both by popular culture and how STEM subjects are taught in schools. In April, 50 images from Nature's weekly Where I Work section, a photo essay which depicts an individual researcher at work, went on display in London's Kings Cross district. The photographs were chosen to reflect the diversity of scientific careers, and in the words of senior careers editor Jack Leeming, to demonstrate that “scientists aren't all wacky lab-coated, round-goggled people from the science fiction film Back to the Future.”In this Working Scientist podcast, Julie Gould visits the exhibition with a group of 12-13 year-old female pupils from London's Elizabeth Garrett Anderson School, where she repeats the Draw a Scientist test, based on their perceptions of scientists. The children draw two pictures, one before and one after viewing the 50 photographs. Gould then asks them how their perceptions have changed, based on what they have seen.As one pupil put it after seeing the exhibition, which closes later this month: “You can be a scientist in almost any part of the world. You could be involved with flowers, with the ocean, with weather, with space. You can do anything.” Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

So, let's talk about viruses and learn about their good side with Dr. Richard White III… After going through the doom and gloom that the COVID-19 pandemic has brought upon us, most of you guys probably don't see the good side of a virus. I mean, that's understandable, given how millions of people have died worldwide and many have suffered from the fear of death. And unfortunately, it may not even end there, because there are a lot of different viral families out there that could cause the next pandemic. This is why we mustn't sleep on these, but at the same time, educate ourselves about the different viruses' effects. Because contrary to popular belief, there are actually a lot of positive attributes and applications that we can use viruses for. We cannot deny that the “big C” has caused us severe suffering, fear, and pain, but in today's episode, we'll learn that NOT all viruses do harm and death. Some even do the work to protect us, our environment, and our planet! So, sit back and relax as we blow your mind with amazing facts on viruses with Dr. Richard White III today. Guest's bio: Dr. Richard Allen White III is a computational molecular synthetic virologist whose interest, passion, and work revolve around understanding viruses. He is an Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, North Carolina, in the Department of Bioinformatics and Genomics. Dr. White III is part of the CIPHER team, where he helps build infectious disease capabilities for both environmental and human health risks. Additionally, he has multiple projects in NASA, USCA, NIH, etc., and works at the North Carolina Research Campus, focusing on human nutrition and human health over the last four years. Why you need to check this episode: Discover the good side of viruses; Understand that not all viruses are bad and harmful (there are those which protect us); and Recognize the need for taking action, especially in preserving our ecosystems which at present are in a state of degradation “Nature has provided the blueprint on how we can deal with these problems; we just have to understand it. It's not all doom and gloom; we can change very subtle things in the way we understand and nurture the microbiome in our own body and how we nurture and feed our environment…By understanding the microbes, we can nurture and feed them, and then we'll have these lush, resurrected ecosystems that are [currently] in a state of degradation.” – Dr. Richard White III Notable Quotes: “My conversation today [does] not reflect the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. It is my take on the current matters of science based on literature and the best of my knowledge.” – Dr. Richard White III “Not all viruses are bad. They do so much for our planet. Obviously, there are ones that cause diseases and pandemics…but there are so many that protect us. I mean, there are more viruses in your mouth right now than there are stars in the Milky Way galaxy that are protecting you from disease and infection.” – Dr. Richard White III “We drink trillions of them a day, we breathe them in, there's billions of them in the soil, [and] they're on your skin. They're everywhere and they protect you. They're more ‘friend' than ‘foe'.” – Dr. Richard White III “Our NASA work suggests that viruses are amplifiers of life.” – Dr. Richard White III “That's the mass of them. That's how small of a mass they are; yet, they provide life and nutrients to the whole ecosystem.” – Dr. Richard White III “We should remind people that there are ecosystems that are dying and we need to preserve them.” – Dr. Richard White III Connect with Dr. Richard White III: Website Sign up at www.listentodrberry.com to join the mailing list. He spent yearsflying planes in various capacities, but after meeting a friend who taught him the craft, he knewsinging was the life for him.Daneka Nation has released a new single titled “Sacred Ground,” which is a Kix Brooks pennedtune that describes what a high school pal had gone through in life.“It's kind of a story of my best friend in high school,” Daneka said. “He got out of high school andthe first thing he wanted to do was have kids. So we graduated in May, and he was already outhitting the clubs on Fridays and Saturday nights. He was a great country western dancer. Well,he found a woman who he got pregnant and had kids. He just couldn't wait. It's really kind of mybest friend's story.”The original version of the song didn't have much fanfare, but in 1992, McBride and the Ride shot it up the charts to number two. The only song in front of it was “Achy Breaky Heart” by Billy Ray Cyrus. Daneka heard the tune on the radio one day while driving, and it hit home so hard that he knew he needed to record it. He pointed out that the storyline touches anyone who went through a similar situation, or anyone who knows young parents working their tails off to get by. Daneka feels that “Sacred Ground” is the best track that he has recorded, and it has had airplayin South America and Europe. The track has more than 200,000 listeners on Spotify, andDaneka is relishing in the fact that it is taking off.“It's exciting,” Daneka said. “Finally I've got something big to work with, and I can't wait for it tobe out there for everybody to hear. I want to hear it on every radio station in the U.S. and allover the world.”Daneka Nation's creative style is a unique one, as he works with an Argentinian multi-instrumentalist named Ariel who plays every instrument on “Sacred Ground.” Ariel will puttogether the music, and send it to Daneka to review before he gets in the studio. Daneka thenlays down his baritone vocals along with some background singers to complete the track.Daneka is a former pilot who worked as a chief flight instructor, and also flew an air ambulancerescuing premature babies from small Texas towns. Due to being partially color blind, Danekastopped flying and became self-employed. This is when he also discovered his love for singing.“I learned a couple songs and went to karaoke bars, and wasn't very good,” Daneka said.“Finally I ran into an 87-year-old man who was 80% blind. He was a quartet singer who hadbeen singing since he was six. So he couldn't drive, and I couldn't sing, so we paired up and hetaught me basically everything about how to sing over a period of three or four years.”Daneka said they would go out as much as six times a week, hitting multiple karaoke bars.Eventually his karaoke buddy passed away, but Daneka's love for music and belting out vocalslived on.“I started lining things up to get the best people around me,” Daneka said. “I got the best guitar players, bass players, drum players and started making music in 2021.”The first song he made a Doug Stone cover called “In a Different Light,” which he changed upinto more of a “rock/country” song. Daneka Nation has seven songs recorded, and has a goal of getting up to 20 tracks. Then hecan get a live band together to play his tunes to the masses.“I've got a post-it note in my bathroom with three goals,” he said. “Number one is to make it inthe music industry. The second one is to play sold out arenas. The third is to play RodeoHouston- the biggest rodeo in the world.”Daneka Nation has been writing his own material, but he has not gotten into the recordingprocess yet. He has a big binder to pull lyrics from to create songs of his own down the road.Daneka said that when he gets his band together, it will be a family friendly event where healways puts in 110%.One thing is certain for Daneka Nation: He is persistent and plans to put everything he's got intohis music.“I refuse to be a one hit wonder,” Daneka said. “If you made it as a one hit wonder, you made enough money to pay someone to write you another hit song. I will never understand a one hitwonder. Daneka Nation will never be that. I don't care if I have to go to California, or Nashville,or wherever I have to go to make a hit song. I'm all in.”Be sure to check out music by Daneka Nation on all major platforms.

Episode # 212 - Art Alexakis of Everclear - New Live Album, 2 New tracks, 30th Anniversary tour and more! The band also has a new album coming out on September 8 on Sunset Blvd. Recordsentitled Live at the Whisky A Go Go. It's a celebration of the band's 30-plus year history and features live versions of the band's signature songs including Santa Monica and Heroin Girl, amongst others, along with two new tracks. The first single, Sing Away, will also be released on September 8. Everclear formed in Portland, Oregon, in 1991. The band was formed by Los Angeles native Alexakis, the band's lead songwriter, vocalist, and guitarist; and for most of the band's height of popularity, consisted of Craig Montoya on bass guitar and Greg Eklund on drums. After the limited release of their independently released debut album, World of Noise, the band found success with their first three albums on Capitol Records: Sparkle and Fade, So Much for the Afterglow, and Songs from an American Movie Vol. One: Learning How to Smile, which were all certified platinum in sales. However, the following two albums Songs from an American Movie Vol. Two: Good Time for a Bad Attitude and Slow Motion Daydream, were not as well received, and as sales suffered, Montoya and Eklund left the band shortly after in 2003. After a brief stint of solo performances, Alexakis decided to push forward with the Everclear name, finding new musicians to perform with and releasing two more albums, Welcome to the Drama Club and Invisible Stars. In 2012, Alexakis started a 1990s nostalgia tour, named the Summerland Tour, which occurs every summer with Everclear and other 1990s alternative rock bands. In April 2015, the band released a ninth studio album, entitled Black is the New Black. Alexakis suffered through a troubled youth, beginning with his father walking out when Alexakis was a child. Financial hardships pushed his family into the slums of Los Angeles, where Alexakis became a heavy drug user. Eventually, Alexakis suffered a near-fatal cocaine overdose, which finally pushed him to clean up. Seeking a change of location, Alexakis and his girlfriend moved to her hometown, Portland, Oregon. There, he placed an ad in local music weekly The Rocket, which earned two responses: bass player Craig Montoya and drummer Scott Cuthbert. The name Everclear was chosen as a reference to the infamous grain alcohol. The new band began recording in a friend's basement. The sessions culminated in two releases: the Nervous & Weird EP and the band's first full-length release World of Noise, both released by Portland's Tim/Kerr Records in 1993. The band signed with Capitol Records in 1994. Just before their signing, Everclear parted ways with drummer Cuthbert, citing personality conflicts, and brought in drummer Greg Eklund. In May 1995, the band released their first album for the label, Sparkle and Fade. The album's first single, "Heroin Girl", received some modest airplay via MTV's 120 Minutes, but was generally missed by the mainstream. However, near the end of 1995, the second single "Santa Monica" found a strong audience via the burgeoning alternative radio format, which eventually carried over to mainstream success. The album subsequently was certified platinum. The band's second album, So Much for the Afterglow, was released in October 1997. The first two singles from the album, "Everything to Everyone" and "I Will Buy You a New Life", performed modestly, but helped to begin a slow build for the album, while "Local God" was featured in Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet in 1996 as well as on the soundtrack. Following an extensive tour of the United States with Marcy Playground and Fastball, the band released Afterglow's third single, "Father of Mine.” The song catapulted the album and the band to mainstream success. So Much for the Afterglow provided the band their only Grammy Award nomination to date, a Best Rock Instrumental nod in 1998 for "El Distorto de Melodica.” Later that year, the band won Billboard's Modern Rock Band of the Year Award. Though Afterglown charted no higher than No. 33 on the Billboard album chart, the album reached double-platinum status at the end of the year. A double-barreled concept effort appeared in 2000 with the poppy Songs from an American Movie, Vol. 1: Learning How to Smile surfacing in early fall and the harder-rocking Songs from an American Movie, Vol. 2: Good Time for a Bad Attitude appearing a few months later. Both records produced several charting singles, with the AM radio pop of "Wonderful" finding the most success. Everclear returned with the more straightforward Slow Motion Daydream in 2003 before the aptly titled greatest-hits compilation Ten Years Gone: The Best of Everclear 1994-2004 appeared in October 2004. By then off the Capitol roster and back in the indie world, the newly minted Everclear, with Alexakis the only remaining original member, released Welcome to the Drama Club in September 2006. Spearheaded by the single "Hater," Drama Club cracked the Billboard Top 200 and hit number 11 on the Top Independent Albums chart. Released in 2008, The Vegas Years was a set of covers; 2009's In a Different Light, an album of acoustic reinterpretations of the group's songs, turned the tables. Two years later, Everclear continued to look backward, cutting a bunch of new versions of their hits -- along with a few covers -- on the album Return to Santa Monica. Their first album of new material in six years, Invisible Stars, arrived in in the summer of 2012; it peaked at 119 on the Billboard charts. Three years later, the group returned with the heavier Black Is the New Black, released on The End Records. A live album was recorded at the Whisky a Go Go on December 1, 2022, commemorating the band's 30th anniversary, although no release has been announced. Everclear's music has been described under multiple genres, predominantly alternative rock, and power pop, but also post-grunge, grunge-punk, grunge, and pop rock.
In early ‘80s California, a new kind of music was brewing that blended the psychedelic sounds of the '60s with the modern day post-punk ethos. This week, hosts Jim DeRogatis and Greg Kot reflect on the Paisley Underground movement. They'll discuss the prominent bands like The Bangles, explore what made the scene so special and explain its impact on indie rock. Jim and Greg will also look back at the 1964 hit by The Shangri-Las, "Leader of the Pack," almost 60 years later. Plus, they'll review the new record from The Hives. You know the drill... up early, car packed, and on the road for the next great family adventure. If that's your story, then you'll probably also admit that the incredible memories you create sometimes come with a dark side. Crowded attractions, high prices, and short fuses can leave a bitter taste that no cotton candy can sweeten. But it doesn't have to be that way. With a little reimagination, your family trips can be so much more. They can be opportunities to teach (and practice) godly qualities like patience, stewardship, and servant leadership. Seeing your family outings through God's eyes can be a real game-changer, regardless of your destination. Take the Godly Father Assessment: https://bit.ly/GodlyDadQuiz
