Ep. 32 - All Hail The Queen featuring DJ Krisy and Madhat It’s our first birthday and it’s an honour to be joined by the legendary DJ Krisy and MC Madhat for the 32nd instalment of Beers, Beats & The Biz. This episode is a journey from hip hop’s earliest days in Australia with two people that were at the forefront of it, from breaking to graffiti and on to radio and live shows. Krisy started breaking around 84, painting graffiti not long after and launched her seminal radio show, Steppin to the AM in 89/90. Her partner Madhat is a B-Boy, writer and was a member of Positive Direction, Acapulco Gold and Towering Inferno - alongside Lazy Grey and DJ Damage. We talk it all from the Street Style Breakers to Krisy partnering with Tiff and painting some of history’s most iconic walls. We talk Madhat’s time at the writers bench, on the streets of Melbourne and his travels as a member of Australian hip hop culture’s earliest crews. We talk about the influence of AKA and DJ C, we talk the Betty Boop wall, panels, Richmond station’s writers bench, Acapulco Gold, Brisbane’s St Valentines Massacre show, travelling, Big Bamboo, connecting with others before the internet and the sheer influence of Krisy and her radio show Steppin to the AM. This episode is packed from front to back and we couldn’t have celebrated our first trip around the sun with two nicer and more iconic individuals. We only exist out here due to the paths paved and battles fought by Krisy and Madhat. Thanks to you for supporting us over the last year and thanks to Krisy and Madhat for all they’ve achieved, and given us. It’s our first episode back for season 2 and we are honoured to be joined by Len One for episode 16 of Beers, Beats and The Biz. This episode is packed! We begin with the ethos behind Len’s new project - alongside Chubbs and Hams - the imprint; Milesago Music and from there we go everywhere. From Len’s teenage years spent in Melbourne as a member of RFK and his early influences, to his move to Brisbane in the early 90’s and the friendships he forged in the River City. We talk meeting Lazy Grey and forming Blackstump, Boney & Stoney, Brothers Stoney and recording their 2003 classic Stonebroke in Adelaide with Mnemonic Ascent’s BVA. We talk stories and behind the scenes of individual songs like Frontin from On or Off Tap, Toowong from The Authentic LP, Freedom Fighters off the Rock Da City compilation, Lyrical Luncheon and Cut Throats from 2004’s Obesecity. Between it all we talk friends, family, the importance of Rics Cafe, Len’s time spent working for Rockinghorse Records, as well as the egos and dynamic of being in a crew like the 750 Rebels. There is too much in this episode, we even get the origins of Len’s synonymous line, “done like a dinner right..” and it’s near catchphrase status today. The impact Ken Oath had on Hip Hop nationally can never be overstated or underestimated, the man should be given icon status. A larger than life MC that did it all, drank it all and then kept it moving, becoming a sought after and highly regarded tattooist over the last decade. We talk all that shit, from being a member of Writers Anon and recording with Lazy Grey to his scene stealing appearances on The Authentic, Culture of Kings, Banned In Queensland, On or Off Tap and Reography. Beyond all that we talk tattooing, 750’s origins and Oath’s role within the crew, we get Oath’s thoughts on Have a Beer (which he co-wrote and coproduced) and even share a hilarious story about keeping DJ Debris from the Hilltop Hoods awake way back in the day. Ken Kong did it harder and better than most and lived to share his story with us, this is a great episode: Call him Mister Ken Oath!
