We're in San Diego for the Red Bull BC One National Finals, and I got the chance to sit down and chop it up with Bboy Eddie Styles from the Full Force Crew, Rock So Fresh, and the original Jabbawockeez. In this episode, Eddie takes us through a quick look at his journey in breaking, his experiences coming up in the San Diego scene, and the rich history and culture of breaking in the area. We also get into footwork, judging, and Eddie's perspective on what he looks for when judging battles, along with some insight into the mindset and knowledge that comes from years of being involved in the culture. I first snapped B-Boy Morris about 15 years ago, and he's not just someone who's deep in breaking culture—he's been one of the best in the world for a long time, competing and winning at the highest level all around the globe. Breaking is one of the four foundational elements of hip-hop culture, alongside MCing, graffiti writing, and DJing, and it was great to sit down with Morris and talk about a culture that I've been close to for so many years. He shares some great stories about growing up, how he first found breaking, and the journey that eventually took him around the world, and I hope this conversation gives people who haven't had much exposure to the culture a better look at what makes it so special. We're here in San Diego for the Red Bull BC One National Finals, catching up with Bboy Victor before he hits the stage!   In this pre-battle interview, Victor talks about his Olympic journey, the people who have supported him along the way, getting himself back into battle mode, his mindset going into the competition, and much more. After everything he's experienced in breaking, it was great to sit down and hear where Victor's head is at before stepping onto the stage.  

I've had a lot of impressive guests on this show, but Khalil Zahar's story genuinely stood out to me. He's the founder and CEO of FightCamp, a company he built from a simple idea, wanting to actually measure his own progress as a boxer, into one of the biggest names in connected fitness, with over $100 million raised and backing from legends like Mike Tyson, Floyd Mayweather, and Georges St-Pierre. He's also not married and doesn't have kids, but the lessons he's built his entire career around, discipline, discomfort, and identity, translate directly to fatherhood and marriage. We started with the pivotal moment in his early 20s, a late night watching Sportscenter, that made him realize he didn't have unlimited time to become who he wanted to be. From there we got into his philosophy around seeking discomfort intentionally, why he believes identity has to come before outcome, and what it actually means to become the person who does the things you want to be known for, rather than chasing the result directly. He shared a personal story about training around a serious injury by controlling everything he could, his nutrition and mindset, when he couldn't control his body, and I shared a nearly identical story from my own torn patella tendon recovery. We closed the conversation on what Khalil calls the mindset of a fighter, discipline, craftsmanship, accepting what you can't control, and learning to be genuinely thankful for your losses instead of resentful of them. Його називали просто «реп». Бо інформації не було. Інтернету не було. А VHS-касета могла стати справжнім культурним скарбом. Гість цього випуску – буквально легендарний першопроходець павермуву, елементу Air Twist, він же Air Flare – B-boy T-Rock Тарас Чернієнко. Один із тих, хто стояв у самому початку українського брейкінгу і формував сцену тоді, коли все тільки починалось. Розмова занурює у атмосферу 90-х і початку 2000-х – у час, коли культура будувалась не з контенту, а з реальних зустрічей, батлів і сайферів. The Southern California Independent Wrestling Scene has produced many outstanding talents in the past twenty-five years. And it would be entirely too hard to imagine the Southern California Independent Scene without thinking about the contributions of Lil Cholo. Not only was he a standout for Martin Marin's WPW, but he was also a big part of Revolution Pro, Ultimate Pro Wrestling, Alternative Wrestling Show, and the National Wrestling Alliance. He would also wrestle in Mexico in Tijuana for Lucha Libre AAA and Mexico City for Toryumon.Outside of his contributions to the Southern California Wrestling Scene, Lil Cholo was part of Wrestling Society X's tag team division. Teaming with fellow Southern California standout B-Boy as the Cartel, joined a stacked tag team division that made WSX unique. This episode of Street Culture Podcast has a different sound – English, because our guest is the iconic carrier of European breaking history from Sweden, Bboy Freeze. So the quotes in the carousel are in the language of flow and cipher. What did the first wave of hip-hop in Europe look like? Why was breaking in the 80s an act of rebellion, not just a trend? What did hip-hop sound like before it was played on the radio? And how did the streets of Gothenburg differ from the streets of Kharkiv? In the thirteenth episode of the second season of Street Culture Podcast, we go back to the 80s, when breaking was just emerging in Sweden. These were the times of VHS tapes, disco clubs for teenagers, and the first battles in school hallways. That's when it all began – with robot dance, Rocksteady crew tapes, and roller skating parties. Everything that is now called a scene was then simply called «being in your neighborhood and wanting to dance». Bboy Freeze's story is a journey from living room floors and the first belly mill to the creation of the legendary Ghost Crew. It's a conversation about contrasts – when someone trained with city support, and someone else under threat of arrest due to VHS. When someone had clubs and tours, and someone else had only concrete and stubbornness. We talk not only about dance but also about a generation that didn't stop when it became «unfashionable». About the dark ages of Scandinavian breaking, which laid the foundation for everything that exists now. About those times when one had to fight not for medals, but for the very existence of culture.
