Be honest. When Kai Havertz missed that first half sitter, you thought that Arsenal were going to lose, didn't you? And why wouldn't you? That's how football works. It's powered by narrativium. Except this time it wasn't. Arsenal destroyed City and Havertz got one in the back of the net eventually. Link to Success Stories: https://drbrg.co/4gx2nVX A caloric deficit is not a sustainable way to lose weight or get a flat stomach! Most people find that their metabolism slows down in their 20s and 30s after a series of calorie-restrictive diets. Lowering calories increases hunger and cravings, which will require immense willpower and can stifle weight loss. The caloric deficit model is not sustainable! Insulin is the hormone that controls whether you burn or store fat. If you reduce insulin, you can tap into your body fat for energy. Carbohydrates have the most significant effect on insulin, while fat is neutral and protein has a moderate impact. All calories are not the same! To lose weight, you must lower insulin, which means you must reduce your carb intake. If you're on a low-carb diet, your body can use both food and body fat for fuel. This eliminates hunger and cravings between meals. Fat provides more than double the energy of glucose. It takes 2 to 3 days to get into ketosis and 2 to 3 weeks for fat adaptation. Fat adaptation means your body is burning the most fat possible. Your body can burn ketones and fat, which are two different fuel sources. To get your body into ketosis, carbohydrates should make up about 5% of your diet, protein 20%, and fat 75%. Visceral fat in the abdomen may prevent a flat belly, but you can eliminate it with this diet. The dead bug exercise stimulates the fascia and muscles that can act as a girdle, giving you a flat belly fast! Do this exercise every day, and within 1 to 2 weeks, you will start to see amazing results!

On this week's show we take a look at a device that claims it will flatten your warped vinyl. Then we ask is there anything that can be done to prevent subscribers from pausing the streaming services. We also read your email and take a look at the week's news. News: Xumo expands retail scope with Target deal Matter 1.4 now supports more smart home devices and adds new capabilities TiVo to launch smart TVs in US by year-end Apple Set For Smart Home Revolution Other: Cosm LG Display's stretchable screen is now even stretchier - The Verge Record Pi Vinyl Flattener A couple of episodes ago we talked about a turntable that uses suction to make warped records flat. Ara joked about taking a blow dryer and heating up the record and then just unwarping it. Well it turns out that there is a product that essentially does this. One of our listeners, Matthew Dropco, pointed us to a product that flattens your vinyl! The Record Pi ($275) vinyl flattener is an innovative solution tailored for fixing warped vinyl records, featuring a patent-pending integrated system comprising three essential components: the Record Pi Device, Record Pi Temperature Controller, and Record Pi Heating Case. The Record Pi Device is engineered using premium steel alloy, ensuring an even distribution of heat while securely holding the record to apply uniform flattening pressure with heavy metal alloy plates and protective Groove Guards. The Temperature Controller offers precise temperature regulation within 1°F of the target range of 100 to 145°F, allowing users to remotely adjust settings via internet connectivity using either Google Android or Apple iOS devices, provided a compatible Wi-Fi router is available. The Record Pi Heating Case not only warms the device during use but also serves as a practical storage solution when not in operation. The product comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee (with the buyer covering return shipping) and a two-year limited warranty, providing confidence in its durability and effectiveness. Weighing 16 lbs, the Record Pi is designed for US standard voltage of 110V but can also be used internationally with the appropriate voltage converter, ensuring its versatility for vinyl enthusiasts everywhere. What can streaming services do to keep customers from pausing subscriptions? We found an article over at TheStreamable.com opining about “What can streaming services do to keep customers from pausing subscriptions”. We have some thoughts on this as well! As streaming services in the U.S. approach market saturation, the focus has shifted from acquiring new customers to retaining current ones. Recent data reveals a significant rise in viewers pausing their subscriptions, increasing from 29.8% in 2022 to 34.2% in early 2024. Many consumers are not dissatisfied with their services; rather, they find it hard to justify the cost until new desirable content is available. To address this issue, streaming providers are exploring various strategies. Current efforts include enhancing bundling options, as surveys indicate that bundled services can significantly decrease cancellations. Recent bundles, such as the Disney+, Hulu, and Max combination, aim to encourage user loyalty. Additional strategies could involve allowing customers to temporarily pause their subscriptions while keeping their accounts active. For example, Hulu could offer a one-time 30-day pause option at a lower rate, such as on an ad-supported plan, to keep users engaged without full financial commitment. Overall, creative retention strategies beyond simple discounts may be essential for preventing subscription pauses.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: BatchTopK: A Simple Improvement for TopK-SAEs, published by Bart Bussmann on July 20, 2024 on The AI Alignment Forum. Work done in Neel Nanda's stream of MATS 6.0. Epistemic status: Tried this on a single sweep and seems to work well, but it might definitely be a fluke of something particular to our implementation or experimental set-up. As there are also some theoretical reasons to expect this technique to work (adaptive sparsity), it seems probable that for many TopK SAE set-ups it could be a good idea to also try BatchTopK. As we're not planning to investigate this much further and it might be useful to others, we're just sharing what we've found so far. TL;DR: Instead of taking the TopK feature activations per token during training, taking the Top(K*batch_size) for every batch seems to improve SAE performance. During inference, this activation can be replaced with a single global threshold for all features. Introduction Sparse autoencoders (SAEs) have emerged as a promising tool for interpreting the internal representations of large language models. By learning to reconstruct activations using only a small number of features, SAEs can extract monosemantic concepts from the representations inside transformer models. Recently, OpenAI published a paper exploring the use of TopK activation functions in SAEs. This approach directly enforces sparsity by only keeping the K largest activations per sample. While effective, TopK forces every token to use exactly k features, which is likely suboptimal. We came up with a simple modification that solves this and seems to improve its performance. BatchTopK Standard TopK SAEs apply the TopK operation independently to each sample in a batch. For a target sparsity of K, this means exactly K features are activated for every sample. BatchTopK instead applies the TopK operation across the entire flattened batch: 1. Flatten all feature activations across the batch 2. Take the top (K * batch_size) activations 3. Reshape back to the original batch shape This allows more flexibility in how many features activate per sample, while still maintaining an average of K active features across the batch. Experimental Set-Up For both the TopK and the BatchTopK SAEs we train a sweep with the following hyperparameters: Model: gpt2-small Site: layer 8 resid_pre Batch size: 4096 Optimizer: Adam (lr=3e-4, beta1 = 0.9, beta2=0.99) Number of tokens: 1e9 Expansion factor: [4, 8, 16, 32] Target L0 (k): [16, 32, 64] As in the OpenAI paper, the input gets normalized before feeding it into the SAE and calculating the reconstruction loss. We also use the same auxiliary loss function for dead features (features that didn't activate for 5 batches) that calculates the loss on the residual using the top 512 dead features per sample and gets multiplied by a factor 1/32. Results For a fixed number of active features (L0=32) the BatchTopK SAE has a lower normalized MSE than the TopK SAE and less downstream loss degradation across different dictionary sizes. Similarly, for fixed dictionary size (12288) BatchTopK outperforms TopK for different values of k. Our main hypothesis for the improved performance is thanks to adaptive sparsity: some samples contain more highly activating features than others. Let's have look at the distribution of number of active samples for the BatchTopK model. The BatchTopK model indeed makes use of its possibility to use different sparsities for different inputs. We suspect that the weird peak on the left side are the feature activations on BOS-tokens, given that its frequency is very close to 1 in 128, which is the sequence length. This serves as a great example of why BatchTopK might outperform TopK. At the BOS-token, a sequence has very little information yet, but the TopK SAE still activates 32 features. The BatchTopK model "saves" th...

Wine Road: The Wine, When, and Where of Northern Sonoma County.
Episode 201 Sponsored by: River Road Family Vineyards and Winery Carol Shelton, Winemaker and Owner of Carol Shelton Wines Today we are joined by renowned winemaker Carol Shelton! We delve into her favorites- currently, the 2022 Coquille Blanc and Wild Thing Rendezvous Rosé, discussing their distinctive winemaking processes. She emphasizes the critical role barrel selection plays in shaping the wines' flavor profiles and highlights the richness of her wines through food pairing, providing a recipe for an asparagus tart that beautifully complements the Coquille Blanc. Wines of the Day: Carol Shelton 2022 Coquille Blanc Wild Thing 2023 Rendezvous Rosé Fast Five: Carol's "Asparagus Tart" - Or Fancy Pizza :) Instructions from Carol herself: Here are the FIVE (sort of, I cheated a bit): 1 roll of crescent roll dough (or puff pastry if you have to be fancy) 2 T. Dijon mustard 2 c. freshly grated gruyère cheese (or fontina or asiago) 1 # very skinny asparagus, tough ends snapped or cut off, then cut into 1” lengths ½ c. freshly grated parmesan cheese A squeeze of fresh lemon juice and its zest (optional) A sprinkling of Herbes de Provence (optional) Preheat oven to 400°F. Flatten out crescent roll dough into a rectangle (approx. 12”x9”) on parchment paper on a sheet pan. Prick it all over with a fork (called “docking it”). Spread the mustard evenly over the docked dough. Sprinkle grated gruyère over crust, avoiding edges so it won't bubble over when hot. Lay asparagus over the bed of cheese and sprinkle herbs, parmesan and lemon juice/zest on top. You can make a nice pattern of the asparagus if you want to get fancy! Bake at 400°F for 15-20 min or until pastry edges are brown and crispy and cheese is melted. Cut into squares and serve—top with a squeeze of balsamic glaze if desired. Looking back over the past 4 years, since we started the “Fifteen Days to Flatten the Curve,” many people in government, big pharma, and “so-called” science have become almost god-like on a global scale. One of the most notorious of them all was Dr. Anthony Fauci. Fauci changed his tune depending on the political needs of the global establishment and became worshipped by many who hung on his every pronouncement. Today, Bob looks into “Dr. Fraud Fauci” and his many fibs. Now, do you believe in this ministry? It is hard to believe that this week marks the 4th anniversary of “Fifteen Weeks to Flatten the Curve.” Four years ago, as the fear porn machine was working around the clock, people across the nation, and even the entire Western world, stayed at home in the false hope that everything would get back to normal in just over two weeks. People lived in fear of the “death tickers” on CNN and other media. How much of it was true, and how much was a lie? Bob begins a week to remember this fearful fraud. Craig Johnson, senior research analyst at Piper Sandler, says that the Dow Jones Industrial Average, Standard & poor's 500 and the Nasdaq Composite are all "trading at the very upper end of an 18-month trading range and this is not usually where you start a whole other leg higher," so he expects a correction back to about 4,600 on the S&P in the next six weeks. When that move is finished, Johnson expects the market to resume its upturn but then to settle into a "high-level trading range," which he says is typical of election years and that it amounts to a sideways move. In that environment, the market will recover from the correction, and then he notes that he thinks it will fizzle and go sideways. Also on the show, Wade Pfau, professor of retirement income at The American College of Financial Services, discusses the latest updated to his “Retirement Planning Guidebook," which center around "tax mapping" and how investors may want to rethink investment strategies in retirement with an eye on minimizing taxes using strategies most haven't considered before now. In the Market Call, Scott Davies, founder/chief investment officer at CDAM, talks about "fire and forget" investing.
As the deadly bombing of Gaza continues, there is some progress towards a resumption of talks to release hostages held by Hamas and a cease-fire. Israel's Army Radio said the country's war cabinet approved sending emissaries to truce talks in Paris. But that slow progress toward a deal did nothing to stop the bombing and killing in Gaza. I previously did an entire episode on King's Cake. This one offers tips from the McKinney Franchisee who is the queen of King Cake sales. The cakes have a baby inside and are shaped like a big huge donut. For King Cakes, we frost than add the colored sugars of yellow, purple and green. The colors signify yellow/gold for power, green for justice and purple for faith. We use a pastry style sweet dough, which is rich and dense. Not really cake like more bread like in texture. ½ cup of honey 3 cups of white flour bread flour 1 cup of whole wheat flour bread flour 1Tablespoon of salt 1 Tablespoon of vanilla 2 Eggs ¼ cup of butter softened 2 packages of yeast or 1 ¾ Tablespoon of dried yeast. 1 ½ cups of milk warmed Make the dough into a long rope like shape much like you would for a baguette. Flatten out the roll, and put brown sugar and a cinnamon mixture in the middle. 1 cup of brown sugar 1 Tablespoon of cinnamon Bake for approximately 30-35 minutes until the bread reaches 180 degrees. With a pastry brush, paint on a layer of powdered sugar and water. 1 cup of powdered sugar Add a tablespoon of water at a time to get a runny pancake batter consistency. The frosting is thin and used to help the colored sugars stick to the loaf. Sprinkle each segment liberally with yellow, green and then purple sugars. You alternate each color. Colored sugar. Place a cup of white sugar into a plastic bag and add a drop or two of food color. Seal the bag shut and shake the bag until the color is evenly distributed. Keep adding food color if needed to get the desired brightness. Place the sheet in the middle of the pre-heated oven for 30-35 minutes. Check to see if the loaf has baked long enough by taking the temperature of the dough in the middle of the loaf, and it should reach 180 degrees. Place on a wire rack and let cool for 15-20 minutes before frosting and adding the sugars. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/house-of-bread/message

Hi Bakers, This is a better snickerdoodle than the original ones. Maybe everyone won't feel this way… But for me, this buttery, rich cookie with rum and nutmeg bring holiday delight in every sugar covered bite. This is an easy bake but, you may need to alter the cooking time to achieve a crisp exterior and a soft center. Do what I do and bake a tester cookie before making a whole batch. This way you know how your oven cooks the dough and you get the cookie baked how you like it! Enjoy ~Carolyn Adapted for gluten-free from the Snickerdoodle recipe from Cooks Illustrated and the NYT Recipe for Eggnog Snickerdoodle Gluten-Free Eggnog Snickerdoodles makes 18 large cookies (3”diameter) Dry Ingredients 2¾ cups Cup4Cup Multipurpose flour*** 1½ teaspoons Koda Farms sweet rice flour ½ teaspoon xanthan gum 2 teaspoons cream of tartar 1 teaspoon baking soda ½ teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg Wet ingredients 1 cup butter, softened 1½ cups sugar 1 large egg 2 large egg yolks 1 tablespoon rum extract ( I like Cook's brand) Topping for rolling In a cereal bowl, mix together 2 teaspoons ground nutmeg and a 1/4 cup granulated sugar. Preheat the oven to 350F. Make sure the oven rack is in the middle position. In a medium-sized bowl, combine the dry ingredients with a whisk and set aside. In a large bowl, combine butter and sugar until well creamed. Add egg, yolks and rum extract and mix again until thoroughly incorporated. Scrape the bowl with a rubber spatula at least once to clean the sides of the bowl. Add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture and mix slowly until combined. Mix for an additional 1 minute to work in the flour and develop some stretch in the dough. Shape into balls using about 2 tablespoons of dough or I use a #24 scoop. Roll in nutmeg sugar topping to coat. Place on a greased cookie sheet, silicone mat, or parchment paper a few inches apart**. Bake for about 12 minutes or until the edges of the cookies are firm and the center has risen but is still soft. If you bake the cookies until they are completely firm they will not be soft and chewy at room temperature. Cool cookies for a few minutes before removing them from the cookie sheet and place them on a rack to cool completely. Gluten-free cookies do not stay moist as long as traditional cookies or last as long in general. If I am not eating the cookies within a day or two, I usually keep them in the freezer or refrigerator. **Flatten the dough in the center a bit before baking if you like a flat, crispy cookie. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/carolyn-hillyer/message

Baked Mac & CheeseIngredients:1 Box of Kraft Deluxe Macaroni & Cheese 1 cup milk ½ cup sour cream 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese Prepare Mac & Cheese as directed on package. Add milk and sour cream. Mix well. Spoon into 8"x8" baking dish. Top with cheese. Bake at 400 degrees for 30 minutes or until cheese is completely melted and lightly browned. **This recipe can easily be doubled and baked in a 9"x13" baking dish. Increase bake time to 45 minutes. S'mores BarsIngredients: ½ c. butter, softened ½ c. sugar 1 egg 1 teaspoon vanilla extract ¾ c. graham crackers, crushed or graham cracker crumbs ¾ c. all-purpose flour ¼ teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon baking powder 3 regular size Hershey bars 7 oz jar of marshmallow creme In a large mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract. Add crushed graham crackers or graham cracker crumbs, flour, salt and baking powder; beat until well mixed, scraping the sides of the bowl. Put a layer of aluminum foil down in the 8"x8" pan and grease the foil. This will allow you to lift the dessert out of the baking pan to cool after baking and allow for easier cutting into bars. Spoon half of the dough into a greased 8"x8" baking pan and spread evenly. Break chocolate bars into pieces and arrange over the dough. Spread a layer of marshmallow creme over the chocolate. Flatten the remaining dough and lay over marshmallow creme. The remaining dough may not cover the entire layer of marshmallow creme but place sporadically over the marshmallow creme layer. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until golden brown. Lift foil out of baking pan and place on cooling rack. Allow dessert to cool and cut into squares. Honey Bun CakeMix together: 1 box yellow cake mix 8 oz. sour cream 2/3 cup vegetable oil 4 eggs Pour half of batter in greased 9x13 pan. In separate bowl, mix together: 2 Tablespoons cinnamon 1 cup of brown sugar Sprinkle cinnamon/brown sugar mixture over batter. Pour remaining batter on top. Bake 350 degrees for 35-45 minutes Poke holes in cake with a fork while hot and pour the following mixture over cake: 2 ½ cups powdered sugar ½ cup milk 1 tsp vanilla Artichoke DipServings 8 people Prep Time 10 minutes Cook Time 30 minutes Total Time 40 minutes Ingredients: 8 oz cream cheese 1 c. Parmesan cheese – shredded 1 c. mayonnaise low-fat or fat-free is acceptable (pantry) ½ t. dill weed 1 clove garlic crushed 1 can artichoke hearts drained and chopped (pantry) Instructions: Preheat oven to 350 Cream the cream cheese, add the Parmesan cheese, mayonnaise, dill weed and garlic. Mix well. Fold in the chopped artichoke hearts and then spoon mixture into a 9×9 pan. Bake for 30 minutes. Recipe Notes: Serve with crackers, toasted baguettes, or toasted pita points. Serves 8 as an appetizer Overnight Sausage, Egg, and Hashbrown Breakfast CasseroleIngredients:1 pound breakfast sausage, crumbled 6 cups frozen shredded hashbrowns, thawed 12 large eggs 2 cups whole milk or half-and-half 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese 1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese 1/2 cup diced onion 1/2 cup diced red bell pepper 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder 1/4 teaspoon paprika Instructions: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the crumbled breakfast sausage until browned and cooked through, about 8-10 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside to cool slightly. In a 9x13-inch baking dish, evenly spread the thawed shredded hashbrowns. Set aside. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk or half-and-half, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and paprika until well combined. Stir in the cooked sausage, diced onion, diced red bell pepper, chopped fresh parsley, and both shredded cheeses until well mixed. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the hashbrowns in the baking dish. Use a spatula or the back of a spoon to gently press the mixture down, ensuring that the hashbrowns are well-covered. Cover the baking dish with plastic wrap or aluminum foil and refrigerate overnight, or for at least 8 hours. The next morning, preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C). Remove the casserole from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for about 20-30 minutes before baking. Remove the cover and bake the casserole in the preheated oven for 45-55 minutes, or until the eggs are set and the top is golden brown. To check for doneness, insert a knife in the center of the casserole; it should come out clean. Allow the casserole to cool for 10 minutes before serving. Cut into squares and serve with your favorite hot sauce, salsa, or ketchup, if desired.

Let's talk about how to flatten your belly fast. Crunches are not the secret to six-pack abs. To get flat abs and avoid poor posture or back pain at the same time, you need to balance exercises like crunches with other types of exercise, like back exercises. Two of the best types of exercises for belly fat are long walks or hikes and high-intensity interval training (HIIT). While exercise is important, diet is more critical when it comes to losing belly fat. The best fat-burning diet is the Healthy Keto® diet. This is a combination of high-quality protein, low-starch vegetables, and other nutrient-dense, low-carb foods. Intermittent fasting is also beneficial to help you lose weight and get healthy. You may want to add more fat to your diet initially to help you fast for longer periods. But, once you become adapted and start losing fat, you may want to cut back the fat you consume. You can take certain remedies for fat-burning, but realize these won't work unless you also change your diet. A few of the best fat-burning supplements include: • Garcinia Cambogia • Raspberry ketones • Green tea extract • Caffeine • Chili pepper extract In some cases, you might mistake bloating for belly fat. Intermittent fasting can help decrease bloating. Bloating could mean you also need more acid in your stomach. Betaine hydrochloride is the best remedy for bloating caused by a lack of stomach acid. A lack of bile can also create bloating. In this case, you could try taking bile salts. Top foods that cause bloating include: • Fruit • Yogurt • Beans • Grains • Almond flour • Sugar alcohols • Tapioca fiber • Soluble corn fiber • Plant-based green shakes or protein shakes If you have IBS or an inflammatory condition in your gut, you may want to try the carnivore diet for a little while to see if that helps reduce bloating. To flatten your stomach fast, you also need to lower your stress. Walking, physical work, and getting plenty of sleep are great ways to reduce stress. If you're going into menopause, it's also essential to support your adrenal glands to help avoid stubborn belly fat down the road.
