One more time, a friend joins me to go back in time to an earlier Spiel des Jahres, looking at the winner but also the other nominees and recommended games. In addition, my guest helps me think about the earlier time itself, and how the games, the hobby, and the community may have changed over the years. This time it's my longtime friend & listener from San Diego, Jonathan Takagi. In fact, he's from a bit north, in Escondido, and Jonathan is another one of the people behind my favorite regional con, EsCon. I'll be going back there in a month! Jonathan decided to pick 2005 because it's twenty years ago...which also happens to be when I started the podcast. Niagara was the game that won the SdJ (one of my earliest disappointments with the jury's selection!), and I replayed it just recently to re-examine my opinion about the game. In fact, it can be played online at BGA, which seems odd for a game that relies on its physicality and "toy factor" as much as it does. Still, the actual strategy in the game remains intact in the format, since the unpredictability of the fork in the river may not be so unpredictable after all. What do you think of Niagara?    We don't just talk about the winner, though. Back in those days, the SdJ jury announced four other "nominated" games that could've won the award, and several more "recommended" games. For me, I think the game I'd want as the winner resides in the nominated list, while Jonathan singles out some standouts from the recommended list. Other titles nominated for the SdJ: Verflixxt! (That's Life), Around the World in 80 Days, Jambo, and Himalaya (Lords of Xidit)     Other titles recommended by the SdJ jury: Boomtown, Tanz der Hornochsen (Dance of Ibexes), The Gardens of the Alhambra, Diamant (Incan Gold), Geschenkt! (No Thanks), Piranha Pedro, Typo, and Wie ich die Welt sehe…         We also talk about two other major German game awards, the Deutscher Spielpreis, and the A La Carte. They are both ranked list. The former is (sort of) for heavier, gamer-games, while the latter is for card games (or “board”games done with cards). The timing of these awards is slightly off from the SdJ, so depending on publication dates a game might show up in one year's list for one award, and the following year for another award. Melle went to The Brit School, and found a love of production making music for her theatrical classes. Moving into Music Technology, she released her first EP 'Blossom' which was played on 1XTRA before she even graduated! Melle worked at Warner Records for over two years and went on to be part of radio shows on RinseFM, NTS, and Represent Radio.    Melle later got signed to influential DJ and Presenter Jamz Supernova's 'Future Bounce' label and released her 'Intersection EP' featuring Grammy nominated Tiana Major9 - which gained support from Elton John and Trevor Nelson. She was mentored by Fred Again and Kamille as part of the 'She Is The Music' programme, where she met Toddla T. Later on, her track 'Feel About You' - an unexpected collaboration with him and Annie Mac, won 'Best Dance Track of The Year' in the 2022 Billboard awards.  Melle has played Printworks, Glastonbury, Boomtown, Fabric, Field Day and she'll be playing a number of festivals this year: She also heads the 'Mellody Agency' - a music business with community at its core. Coulda used a certain gas mask from a certain empty child whilst all that farting was going on. Spoilers... and um spoilers for “spoilers” sweeties!

Sam Anderson is a master of the essay form whose work spans a huge range of human experience and culture.  As a staff writer for The New York Times Magazine, Sam has interviewed and written about Weird Al Yankovic, writer John McPhee, NBA point guard Russell Westbrook, travel guru Rick Steves, Japanese novelist Haruki Murakami and the people trying to rescue Michaelanelo's David sculpture from ruin. He has spent time with the last two white rhinos on Earth and visited the bat volcano in Calakmul, Mexico. And he wrote a book, Boom Town, about Oklahoma City which is both a profile of one Midwestern municipality and a meditation on the dueling forces of rapacious development and “place making” that are at war in every American city, including Beacon.  In each of his projects, Sam brings a trademark personal touch, situating himself in relation to his subjects with a disarming vulnerability. He weaves in his anxiety, depression, his body image, feelings of loss and fear of death through introspective asides that illuminate rather than upstage his subjects.  In our interview, Sam talks about his early ambition to be a writer, his creative process, animals, aging, drawing, strategies for overcoming depression and much more.

Despite this economic bounty, Kalundborg's schools are underperforming and entertainment opportunities are limited. Many young keen people say it's peaceful but dull and can't wait to get out to study and work in bigger cities like the capital, Copenhagen.
