Their smart technology, which integrates IoT sensors and AI analytics, has boosted energy access by 40% in pilot regions. In India, startups like AgroSun are combining solar microgrids with smart irrigation systems, resulting in a 30% increase in crop productivity while lowering energy costs. Bright ideas can light up even the darkest corners, proving that when technology meets necessity, local economies are energized. Circular Economy to AI Revolutionise Waste Management Waste management is undergoing a radical transformation as well evolving from mere recycling to innovative upcycling. In Poland, Bin-e applies AI-powered smart bins that sort waste automatically creating public awareness of the importance of recycling as they are placed in public places. Ventures like Boomera are pushing beyond recycling to upcycling by converting waste into valuable raw materials for next-generation manufacturing. Meanwhile, New Zealand's Mint Innovation is redefining e-waste management by extracting rare earth elements from e-waste for high-tech production, creating a circular economy that transforms discarded materials into economic opportunities while mitigating risks of volatile and high pricing of virgin, rare materials. A five-member mountaineering team of U.S. military, Veterans, and a physician from non-profit U.S. Expeditions and Explorations (USX) summited North America’s highest peak, Denali, Alaska, during a scientific research expedition to benefit the study of high altitude cardiology, May 14 to June 5, 2018. USX is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that enables the military and Veteran communities to impact STEM fields by conducting adventurous, scientific research across the globe. During USX’s Denali expedition, its team members wore Cardiac Insight, Inc.’s Cardea SOLO™ wireless electrocardiogram sensors to capture cardiology data and detect cardiac arrhythmias at high altitude. One of the members of the mountaineering team that went up Denali was Army Veteran Adam Storck. He is Head of Devices for M-KOPA Solar, overseeing new product development, delivery, and testing. Storck is from Seattle and resides in London and Nairobi, Kenya. He is a graduate of Garfield High School, Seattle (2005), UNC-Chapel Hill (2009), and Oxford University (2016). Adam is also a Veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom, Afghanistan (2010-2011, 2013). Adam joins Borne the Battle to talk about his experience climbing to the summit of Denali and the incredible work he is doing in Nairobi. So, Episode 80 of the African Tech Round-up, aka the episode that nearly never happened, is finally out. In an interview Andile Masuku just taped for the upcoming season of the African Tech Conversations series, Co-founder and Chief Credit Officer of M-KOPA Solar, Chad Larson, shared words he lives by that epitomise why I’m glad the team didn’t give up on publishing the podcast this week— despite the ridiculousness that made it nearly impossible to do so. “Done is always better than perfect,” he said. So, here it is. There’s no doubt that this has so far been a bumper year for the world’s hacking community. Last week, one of Kenya’s biggest banks, the Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB), spent a fair amount of energy trying to convince its customers that their personal data remains uncompromised-- this, following claims by a certain programmer who goes by @IrakChris on Twitter claiming to have accessed KCB's client data through vulnerabilities found in the bank's mobile app. Meanwhile, Twitter, Spotify, Amazon, Reddit, Yelp, Netflix, and The New York Times suffered easily one of the world's biggest coordinated distributed denial of service (aka DDoS) attacks last Friday which led to the sites either slowing to a snail's pace or being knocked out altogether.
