Operation Enduring Freedom: Från bombningar till bitter reträtt

Militärhistoriepodden

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 14, 2025 50:43

She has four siblings.     “Being a military child who is now permanently in Swansboro, I get to not only relate to these new military kids, but help ease their transition into their new environment,” she said.    Her parents served a combined 42 years in the Marine Corps. Her mother, a staff sergeant, deployed three times in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, and humanitarian missions. She retired after 20 years.     Her father, Gunnery Sgt. Brian J. Smith, retired from service after 22 years and eight deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. He was awarded a Purple Heart after suffering injuries in Afghanistan. He died in 2023 at the beginning of Isabella's sophomore year of high school after being diagnosed with Stage 4 metastatic cancer.    “My father who was the epitome of hard work and dedication to his career,” she said. “I strive daily to be as committed as he was in everything I aspire to accomplish.”     Isabella is on track to earn an associate degree before graduating high school. She's considering several universities in North Carolina for completing a bachelor's degree before going to law school. She aspires to a career in the political field.     Ian, Operation Homefront's 2025 Military Child of the Year® for the Coast Guard, has achieved academic success that will help propel him to his goal of becoming a civil engineer, all while mentoring other students.    Ian, 17, is a senior at I.C. Norcom High School in Portsmouth, Virginia, where he is currently his class valedictorian, the first Black male student to hold the position in a decade. He will graduate with an associate degree from Tidewater Community College a month before his high school graduation.    Ian is the son of retired Lt. Michael Lindo and Michelle Effatt. Michael served for 27 years active duty in the Coast Guard, deploying for a total of 10 years conducting counter drug and migrant interdictions in the Caribbean, before retiring in 2019. His father lives in Georgia while Ian and his mom live in Virginia.    “My father's dedication and commitment to serving our country for so many years is something I deeply admire,” Ian said. “His loyalty and sacrifice for our nation have shaped who I am. It's not just about the uniform; it's about the values he instilled in me—discipline, resilience, and a strong sense of duty.”   “I'm really passionate about designing systems that can improve lives, especially in underserved areas,” Ian said. “I've always believed that infrastructure like roads and bridges plays such a crucial role in connecting people, improving safety, and supporting everyday life.”    Ian is currently deciding among several universities, including Virginia Tech and North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, to major in civil engineering.     Sophia, Operation Homefront's 2025 Military Child of the Year® for the Air Force, has learned to embrace life following the death of her father in 2023 after he served his country for 17 years.    Sophia, now 17, was 15 years old when her father, Master Sgt. Anthony Pinero, passed away tragically… She lives at Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany with her mom, Sheena Pinero, an executive services specialist and her younger sister.    As a military child, Sophia experienced 37 months of her father's deployment and five changes of station. Moving most recently to Germany meant leaving friends and family even farther away than usual, but Sophia responded with resiliency, helping plan trips around Europe with her mom and sister.    “Of all of the bases that I have been stationed at, Ramstein Air Base has been the best,” Sophia said. “I have never felt as connected to the people around me as I do here. Whether it is pitching mail at the post office with active-duty personnel or recognizing volunteer excellence in the community, Ramstein Air Base has always felt like one big, connected family.”    Sophia is considering pursuing a career in engineering or medicine. She wants to attend the United States Air Force Academy or a university with a strong Air Force ROTC program, and she hopes to become an officer in the Air Force.     Full biographies can be found at https://operationhomefront.org/2025-military-child-of-the-year-award-recipients/?internal_medium=internal&internal_source=banner&internal_campaign=thd-oh-25-03-internal-mcoy-traff&internal_content=D2503W61SB&sourceid=1153486.

In This Episode You Will Hear: • [The field] is the great equalizer. Nobody can bother me there. On the field, it doesn't matter what you bring, what you showed up in, or what kind of clothes or shoes you have. It's me against you. (18:49) •You just never knew when to give all you had, so all you do was constantly give all you had. (31:13) •Life's not fair, which makes it fair. (36:45) •Just like in the Navy, you're not gonna do well in the beginning, because they've gotta see a transition to you being good. (43:22) •We made marijuana legal, but what that did was the cartels were like “I'm not losing 30% of my profit. I'll find something else.” (61:46) •America makes up 80 something percent of the world's opioid prescriptions. (63:11) •I take full responsibility for my divorce. I forgot how to be a husband, forgot how to be a dad, and it hit me hard. (66:11) • [My friend Brian, also the Police Chief] was checking in on me. You know what I didn't say? “how're you doing bro?” He checked on me and I didn't check on him. 2 hours later he went home and shot and killed himself. (72:46) •If you want to learn how to make ramen the right way, ask a military guy. (76:31) •I just felt like I was failing my kids every single day. All of a sudden, this light bulb went off. The next step in my transition from the Navy to the police department to the team, is to take myself out of the game. (77:00) •The off-ramp is – it's okay to not be okay. (80:05) •Once you realize that life is short, you don't want to waste 24 hours being hungover. (86:04) •Every day I'd wake up and I'd say. “Today's a good day to die, so is tomorrow.” And I would try to string some good decisions together. (90:29) •My motto is: Every day, I find an opportunity inside of my 24-hour window that I get to live to do something good for somebody else. (91:08) •Tomorrow is a good day, and you can make it there. (93:20) •The scariest day of my life was when I hit “publish” on my book. (100:08) •Where I sit here today, God is the biggest influence in my life. (107:08) •As I speak around the country people would line up to buy a book, but I realized they weren't trying to buy a book. You know what they wanted to do? They just wanted to come and say “Hey, I'm struggling, too.” (116:10) Socials: --  IG: authormattgriffin Support TNQ - IG: team_neverquit , marcusluttrell , melanieluttrell , huntero13 -  https://www.patreon.com/teamneverquit Sponsors:    - WARFARE IN THEATERS    - shipsticks.com/TNQ    - Navyfederal.org           - Robinhood.com/gold    - strawberry.me/TNQ    - stopboxusa.com {TNQ}    - ghostbed.com/TNQ [TNQ]   -  kalshi.com/TNQ    - PXG.com/TNQ   -  joinbilt.com/TNQ    - Tonal.com [TNQ]   - greenlight.com/TNQ   - PDSDebt.com/TNQ   - drinkAG1.com/TNQ   - Shadyrays.com [TNQ]   - qualialife.com/TNQ [TNQ]   - Hims.com/TNQ   - Shopify.com/TNQ   - Aura.com/TNQ   - Policygenius.com   - TAKELEAN.com [TNQ]   - usejoymode.com [TNQ]

My guest today is Army veteran and artist Dillon Krueger. He has crafted a heartfelt children's book, Why We Stand, to teach the next generation about the significance of the National Anthem. Dillon, who served in the United States Army Infantry and was deployed to Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom in 2011, wrote Why We Stand for his three sons—Liam, Maddox, and Asher. Ladies and gentlemen, WHY WE STAND is beautifully written and illustrated, the story follows an American bald eagle as he takes his son on a journey across the country, teaching him the history of the Anthem, including the War of 1812 and the Battle of Baltimore. The book also features vibrant illustrations of some of America's most iconic monuments. In a time when the meaning of the National Anthem and the American flag is often debated, Dillon's book offers a compelling way for parents to spark conversations about patriotism and respect with their children. Published through Dillon's veteran-owned company, Real Patriot Publishing, Why We Stand is printed in the USA and available for $20 at PatrioticKidsBooks.com. Resilience and Recon: The Inspiring Journey of Davey Lind In this week's Team Never Quit episode, Marcus and Melanie meet with Master Sergeant Davey Lind, a United States Marine, combat veteran, and motivational leadership speaker whose life story is a testament to resilience, courage, and the power of perseverance. Born and raised in Titusville, Pennsylvania, Davey embarked on his military journey immediately after high school, joining the Marine Corps in 1989. Over the years, he honed his skills and leadership as a Recon Marine, serving in pivotal roles from scout to team leader and participating in key operations, including Desert Storm, Operation Enduring Freedom, and the Iraq War. On June 14, 2007, Davey's life changed forever when a pressure plate IED in Iraq led to the loss of his legs below the knees. Incredibly, he took his first steps just two months after the injury and has continued to inspire others with his unyielding spirit and dedication to recovery and service. Today, Davey is a sought-after motivational speaker, sharing lessons learned from the battlefield and life, focusing on leadership, adaptability, and grit. He resides in Corona, California, with his wife Lisa and their four children, where he continues to make a difference in the private sector with his involvement with PXG Golf. It became a great outlet for him and something to look forward to. He is actively involved in helping veterans heal in the context of golf outings and they have made more friends and memories from various golf adventures. Join us as we dive into Davey's incredible journey, from the challenges of combat to overcoming life-altering injuries and emerging as a beacon of strength and inspiration.  In This Episode You Will Hear: • 35 in the Marine Corps, that's old. (14:04) • We were part of a surge in the summer of '07, and my vehicle struck and activated a pressure plate IED. This IED went off directly underneath me, and from that blast I became a double leg amputee. (15:02) • I rolled over on my back to try to use my left leg to push, and when I tried to do that, that's when I realized my left leg was gone. (24:50) • I'm married, I have kids, I have goals, and I was immediately aware of how challenging my life was gonna be. (25:17) • As a platoon sergeant, I was armed with both a rifle and pistol. That pistol was on my hip, and I had the conscious thought to end my life right there. I could do it before they could finish working on me. (25:33) • I had a very clear moment of calming, reflection of “everybody did their best.” I'm just gonna die here on the battlefield. (26:54) • My initial assessment was “You're gonna walk in about 10 months to a year. (33:32) • Being in a wheelchair, even as a gunny, is like the kids table at Thanksgiving. Nobody's talking to you; they're talking about you. (35:08) • There's a great relationship you have to have with your prosthetic doctor. The fit has to be tight, but not too tight. Then there's alignment. There's a lot that goes into it. (37:39) • Guys like me – a double leg amputee, I call guys that are single leg below the knee – we refer to that as a paper cut. (38:48) • Perspective is everything. (39:35) • I was able to retire though, which is important because I did a full 20 years, 6 months, and 3 days of active duty time. (46:15) • In 2018 I got one of the greatest phone calls I've ever received. Kevin Hudson from PXG called me and said, “We got a program going on - PXG Heroes. If I help you with this program, do you think you could golf a little bit more, and talk about the program, and introduce people to PXG. Would you be willing to do that? (48:19) • Golf is the only thing you can do competitively for the rest of your life. (62:45) • [Marcus] In the beginning you wonder why you got hit. You got hit so you can show people what it's like and stay up. Please take a few minutes to share your thoughts about the show in this short feedback survey. By doing so, you will be entered to receive a signed copy of one of our host's three books on military and veteran mental health. About Today's GuestDerek Abbey, Ph.D. is Project Recover's President and CEO. He served for 23 years in the United States Marine Corps. His academic research and his post-military career have focused on connecting veterans with college opportunities, He began as Project Recover team member in 2004 and spent five years on the Board of Directors before being appointed as President / CEO.Derek Abbey grew up in Seattle. He was the only child of a single mom doing the best she could to raise a “rambunctious boy.”  Her unexpected death when Derek was 13 turned his life upside-down. For four years, he lived primarily with his aunt and uncle. Finally, at 17, Derek ran away to the Marine Corps. Derek Abbey had been without a rudder and sail for most of his life. In the USMC, he found a structure and system he could succeed in.First, he enlisted in the Marine Corps as a communicator. After his initial enlistment, the Marine Corps selected him for a commissioning program and sent him to Oregon State University to earn a degree. Upon receiving his degree he was commissioned as a ground officer. Finally, Derek was selected for an aviation contract while completing the six months long Basic School. This combination of events, going into the military and then to college, set the stage for Derek's academic and professional accomplishments. It also is the seed that gave rise to a passion for connecting veterans with educational opportunities. It is also, of course, the precursor which led up to his current role with Project Recover.Derek Abbey attended flight school in Pensacola FL and graduated as a Naval Flight Officer. He was then sent to the F/A-18 Hornet Fleet Replacement Squadron at MCAS Miramar where he earned his designation as an F/A-18 Weapons Systems Officer. He was then immediately assigned to his first squadron, VMFA(AW)-121, and deployed for Operation Southern Watch and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Over the next few years, he deployed two more times to Iraq and once to the Far East. He holds more combat hours in the Hornet than hours in peaceful skies. After an extended and successful tour in the Hornet, Derek left flight operations to become a Plank Owner (original member) at Marine Corps Special Operations Command as the Air Officer for the 1st Marine Special Operations Battalion, now 1st Raider Battalion. During this period with the Marine Raiders, he served in Marine Special Operations Company Delta and was deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom as their Forward Air Controller, Special Operations JTAC, and Executive Officer. In 2009, Derek was selected by the Marine Corps for the Advanced Degree Program and assigned to the University of San Diego. “In 2009-2011, there was a huge influx of military into higher education. Universities were figuring out how to work with these populations.” While earning a Masters in Higher Education Leadership, Derek conducted research on how universities and colleges work with military-connected students on their campuses. His thesis provided best practices for colleges to use in creating successful military programs on their campuses. In his twilight tour from 2011-2014, Derek served as the Director of the Marine Corps' Train the Trainer School in Camp Lejeune, NC. His organization was responsible for the training and education of instructors, curriculum developers, staff and leadership of 93 training units across the Marine Corps. Derek retired from the USMC as a Major in 2014. Shortly thereafter, he began his doctorate in Leadership Studies at the University of San Diego. Derek focused again on conducting practical research that would help make higher education more accessible to veterans, the majority of whom would be first-generation college students. His research has garnered national attention and resulted in multiple speaking engagements. Derek earned his Ph.D. in 2019.Upon retiring from the Marine Corps, Derek began working at San Diego State University as a Military Liaison Officer in the Joan and Art Barron Veterans Center. In this position, he focused on outreach to the military-connected students in the region in order to provide guidance for them attaining their higher education goals. In 2015, he took over the Military and Veterans Program at The University of San Diego.  During his time with USD, he created and implemented programming that resulted in the growth of the military-connected population by 30% and the program being recognized as one at the top in the nation. Derek was the advocate for this population not only at USD but on other campuses in the region through the Military Ally program and with organizations across the nation attempting to provide better educational guidance for the military population.  In 2017, Derek took over West Coast Operations for the Travis Manion Foundation (TMF) as the Senior Director of the West and Northwest Regions. TMF is a veterans service organization that works to unite the American community through programming that emphasizes the value of strong character. In this role, he oversaw the strategy development, program implementation and expansion, budget execution, and evaluation in TMF's largest geographical region. Links Mentioned in this Episode Project Recover Web SitePsychArmor Resource of the WeekFor this week's PsychArmor resource of the week is an episode of the Behind the Mission Podcast, episode 153 with Christina Slentz and the League of Wives Memorial Project. For Former Rep. Adam Kinzinger, service to country has been the guiding principle of his life and career — first as a member of the armed forces, and later as a lawmaker in the halls of Congress. When the strength of the nation was tested on January 6th, 2021 and in the months following, Kinzinger took his sworn oath further, boldly demonstrating an exceedingly rare loyalty to country over party. As one of only two Republicans on the January 6th Committee, Rep. Kinzinger stood against his own party in pursuit of democracy and justice. Shortly after the insurrection at the Capitol, Congressman Kinzinger started the Country First movement, which has grown rapidly to over 100,000 members today and counting. From 2011-2022, Congressman Kinzinger served six terms in the United States House of Representatives, where he proudly represented Illinois' Sixteenth Congressional District, which stretches across 14 counties in Northern Illinois. While in Congress, Kinzinger served as a member of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce and the House Foreign Affairs Committee, where he served as Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Europe, Eurasia, Energy and the Environment in the 116th Congress. He also served on the non-partisan Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol. His top priorities included strengthening U.S. energy policy and making our nation less reliant on foreign resources as well as bolstering the strength of our national security –both at home and abroad.Prior to being elected to Congress, Kinzinger served in the Air Force in both Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. Kinzinger continues to serve his country as a pilot in the Air National Guard, with the current rank of Lieutenant Colonel, and balanced this service with his duties in Congress.During his time in Congress, Kinzinger worked tirelessly for IL-16, and for the security of our nation. From getting veterans back to work, to combatting the opioid epidemic, Congressman Kinzinger fought for his constituents and stood up for America, keeping his oath to protect and defend our Constitution.✖️✖️✖️Support the Show: Patreon.com/PreacherBoys✖️✖️✖️If you or someone you know has experienced abuse, visit courage365.org/need-help✖️✖️✖️CONNECT WITH THE SHOW:preacherboyspodcast.comhttps://www.youtube.com/@PreacherBoyshttps://www.facebook.com/preacherboysdoc/https://twitter.com/preacherboysdochttps://www.instagram.com/preacherboyspodhttps://www.tiktok.com/@preacherboyspodTo connect with a community that shares the Preacher Boys Podcast's mission to expose abuse in the IFB, join the OFFICIAL Preacher Boys Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1403898676438188/✖️✖️✖️The content presented in this video is for informational and educational purposes only. Threat of Another Terrorist Attack ‘Is Higher Now' Than in Months Before 9/11, Expert Says

It was 23 years ago Wednesday that terrorists hijacked four U.S. commercial airline flights, turned the planes into weapons, crashed them into the World Trade Center towers, the Pentagon, and a field in Pennsylvania, and in the process killed nearly 3,000 people. Today, America is at risk of another equally as deadly terrorist attack, a national security expert says. The threat of another 9/11-type terrorist attack on America “is higher now than it was in the months and years preceding 9/11 for a couple of reasons,” says Robert Greenway, director of the Allison Center for National Security at The Heritage Foundation.  First, Greenway says the terrorist threat level against the U.S. is high because of “our posture abroad, our approach to our adversaries, … [and] our neglected military capacity and capability and focus.”  But America's greatest vulnerability to another terrorist attack, he says, is “the fact that we've invited terrorist organizations to exploit our open borders, and now they are really hiding within our own population and enjoying the benefits and concealing themselves in their activities inside of our own borders.”  Greenway deployed in support of Operation Relentless Pursuit and Operation Enduring Freedom in October 2001 in the war on terrorism. He also served as a senior intelligence officer at the Defense Intelligence Agency, and then on the National Security Council.  Listen to our interview with Greenway marking the anniversary of 9/11 on today's edition of “The Daily Signal Podcast."

And we're gonna go after the crazies in the political environment that do not have the interest of the country at heart." - Adam Kinzinger   Rep. Adam Kinzinger served with integrity during his time in the U.S. Congress as well as the Air Force. Yet, the mere mention of his name sends a certain ex-President (HINT: rhymes with Shmump) as well as many of that ex-prez's most loyal followers into a rage. So it was a special honor for us to speak with former Congressman Kinzinger. Having served in Congress from 2011 to 2023 and on notable committees such as the House Select Committee investigating the January 6 Capitol attack, he discusses the challenges of political extremism, the importance of compromise, and his journey from a conservative upbringing to questioning his beliefs, while staying true to deeply rooted, unimpeachable values. He addresses the toxicity of social media, the need for reconciliation across political and religious spectrums, and his work with Country First, aimed at promoting democracy and moderating political discourse. Adam's reflections on his faith, encounters with extremism, and the significance of genuine conversation across differences provide a nuanced perspective on navigating the complexities of current American political and religious landscapes.   Congressman Adam Kinzinger served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2011 to 2023, representing Illinois' 16th Congressional District. During his tenure, he served on the House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol, as well as the House Committee on Energy and Commerce and the House Foreign Affairs Committee. VP Hopeful Tim Walz Is Getting Swift Boated By Hardliners

Zero Blog Thirty

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 14, 2024 67:15

In a situation reminiscent of the 2004 attacks on John Kerry, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, the Democratic vice-presidential nominee, is facing Republican criticism over his military service. The Trump campaign has questioned the accuracy of Walz's statements about his service in the Minnesota National Guard, sparking a debate that echoes the "swift boating" attacks on Kerry's Vietnam War record. Background: The "Swift Boating" Strategy The term "swift boating" originated from the 2004 presidential campaign when an outside group, Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, questioned Kerry's military honors, including his three Purple Hearts and a Silver Star. The strategy effectively undermined Kerry's image as a war hero and raised doubts about his fitness to lead. Walz's Military Service Timeline Tim Walz served 24 years in the Minnesota National Guard, achieving the rank of Command Sergeant Major. However, he retired as a Master Sergeant for benefits purposes due to not completing certain coursework. His military service included a deployment as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, and his retirement in May 2005 has been scrutinized by Republicans, who claim he retired to avoid deployment to Iraq. Walz's campaign refutes these claims, asserting that his service record is being mischaracterized. Political Implications Democratic strategists argue that the political landscape has evolved since 2004, and such attacks may not have the same impact in today's media environment. The Trump campaign's attempt to revive this tactic, led by adviser Chris LaCivita, who was involved in the original "swift boating" campaign, highlights the enduring nature of military service as a political issue. Key Takeaways Tim Walz's Military Record: Central to the Republican criticism, with claims that he misrepresented his service and retired to avoid deployment. Comparison to John Kerry: The strategy mirrors the 2004 attacks on Kerry, although the effectiveness of this approach in 2024 remains uncertain. Political Landscape: Democrats believe that the changed media environment may blunt the impact of these attacks compared to 2004. #TimWalz #MilitaryRecord #SwiftBoating #JohnKerry #2024Election #TrumpCampaign #Veterans #Democrats #Republicans #PoliticalStrategy #OperationEnduringFreedom #NationalGuardYou can find every episode of this show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or YouTube. At trial, Shane Lazenby demonstrated that James Harper, the 76-year-old tractor-trailer driver who died before the case went to trial, lied on his Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration medical exam, took prescription narcotics four times a day, performed breathing treatments for COPD in his trailer and was regularly admitted to the hospital for pneumonia. In 2020, a Gainesville, Georgia jury returned a verdict in favor of Kip Holland's grieving family and awarded $21,029,363 in damages, litigation expenses, and attorney's fees.   Guest Bio: Shane Lazenby Shane Lazenby is the founder and managing member of Lazenby Law Group. After more than a decade of defending those accused of negligence in personal injury cases, Shane decided to reverse course and help the victims of serious injuries. With unparalleled compassion and limitless commitment, Shane quickly learned how much more rewarding and uplifting service as a victim's advocate can be. Shane now focuses his practice on helping the victims of catastrophic personal injury and the families whose loved ones have passed as a result of another's negligence. Shane received his law degree in 1999 at the Walter F. George School of Law at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia. While at Mercer, Shane was a member of the Moot Court Board and the Mercer Law Review where he served as the Eleventh Circuit Survey Editor. Shane also received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science, with a minor in Latin, from Mercer in 1994. Following law school, Shane returned to the United States Army, where he served as a Judge Advocate with the 82d Airborne Division. Shane's service included duties as the Regimental Judge Advocate for the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, where he obtained a 100% conviction rate in the most active military justice jurisdiction in the United States Army. Shane was also selected to be the first Judge Advocate from the 82d Airborne Division to deploy to the Global War on Terrorism as counsel to the Commander of the 3rd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment in Kandahar, Afghanistan. Shane was then selected to be the Operational Law Attorney for the 82d Airborne Division Commander in Bagram, Afghanistan, where he served until returning home. In December 2010, Shane retired from the Georgia Army National Guard after 21 years of total military service with the Georgia National Guard, United States Army, and Army Reserve. Shane joined the military in 1989, first serving as a combat medical specialist. In 1993 Shane graduated from Officer's Candidate School and was commissioned as an Infantry Officer. Shane served as an Infantry Platoon Leader, Signal Platoon Leader, and Operations Officer with a Ranger-led, Airborne Long Range Surveillance Unit. He then returned to the active Army for his tour of duty as a Judge Advocate before transitioning into the Army Reserve. In the Army Reserve, Shane continued service as a Judge Advocate, but was then selected for Command as the Headquarters and Headquarters Company Commander for the 335th Signal Command. Thereafter, Shane transitioned back into the Georgia Army National Guard where he returned to his Infantry roots and became the Executive Officer of the 3-108th Cavalry Squadron; his retirement assignment. Shane's service awards include the coveted Ranger tab, the Master Parachutist Badge, the Air Assault Badge, and the Bronze Star for service in the Republic of Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom. Shane's service as an Army Ranger also included competition in the LTG David E. Grange Best Ranger Competition in 2002. After his return from Afghanistan, Shane transitioned into private practice with a prestigious trial defense firm in Atlanta, Georgia, where he gained invaluable experience and growth alongside some of Georgia's finest defense and plaintiff attorneys. After deciding to depart big city life, Shane settled with his family in Gainesville, Georgia. In Gainesville, Shane continued honing his skills as a partner with a Gainesville firm specializing in the defense of physicians accused of medical malpractice. In his career, Shane has tried more than fifty cases to verdict. Independent duty corpsmen play a critical role in Navy medicine, especially on smaller ships, where they must rely on specific maritime medical resources and their extensive training to provide care in resource-constrained environments. A deep understanding of trauma care logistics and resource management is essential aboard naval ships, where every medical decision can significantly impact the mission and the health of service members. Maritime surgery requires innovative practices to ensure readiness, such as mastering clinical decisions without advanced technology and managing mass casualty situations in a moving and remote setting. Welcome back, loyal listeners to another episode of the Team Never Quit Podcast!  Join us as Marcus and Melanie sit down for a conversation with wounded warrior and U.S. Navy SEAL, Joey Hahn. Having lost his mother at 4 years of age to cervical cancer, his father was unable to care for him and his two siblings, and they were placed in foster care where they lived in dozens of homes across Texas until he graduated high school. Despite the turmoil in his life, Joe graduated third in his high school class, earning multiple scholarships to attend Texas A&M University to pursue a Biomedical Science Degree. Joe was attending college when the 9/11 attacks occurred. He enlisted and spent 13 years in the United States Navy as a Special Operator First Class (SEAL). He deployed multiple times in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, and he then deployed three more times to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and to other undisclosed locations worldwide.  During two separate freefall workups for specific missions and deployments, Joey was catastrophically injured, shattering his left and right legs individually. Each injury required several surgeries and months of recovery time before he was able to return to his unit. After two more deployments, the extent of his injuries was discovered, requiring more surgeries. Unable to fully recover and having sustained several TBI's from explosions and IED's while overseas, Joseph Hahn was medically retired in 2017.  Joey currently subcontracts with various entities conducting training, personal security, and consulting while continuing to pursue his degree. I was in Kindergarten. (9:20) • The foster home that took me in was my baseball coach. (18:02) • I was constantly the new kid. My average stay at a home was 6 months. (20:38) • The whole image of 9-11 and the invasion of Iraq was all over the TV. Stuff like that ate at me, especially being young, able-bodied, male Texan. I kept thinking to myself I need to do something now if I'm gonna do it because I'm physically capable now. (26:36) • What attracted me to the whole community was combat diving. I loved water growing up. You couldn't keep me out of a body of water: lake, pond, tank, trough. I was always trying to find a way to get wet. (32:02) • Growing up as a child, I didn't have any connections to anybody. I rarely saw my actual brother. There was no consistency as far as people in my life until the very end of my foster kid career. (73:51) • I never really bonded with anybody until I went to BUDS. I can tell you everybody I went to BUDS with. They made a lifelong imprint on my life. (74:15) • The only way to survive this situation [in battle] is to be with your brothers, and be ready for it, but accept that death is a possibility. (76:15) • Instructors were telling us, “You've gotta be prepared to shoot somebody in the face. If you're not mentally prepared for that, you're in the wrong line of work. (78:28)
