The life and testimony of Maewyn Succat, AKA St. Patrick
The World's Hatred Teacher: Jon Morales, Lead Pastor at Oak Pointe Church John 15:18-27 In two weeks, our nation will commemorate St. Patrick's Day, but amid the leprechauns, shamrocks, and corned beef, does anyone remember what we're celebrating? Maewyn Succat, later known as St. Patrick, was born in Britain in the fourth century A.D. Shortly before Patrick turned 16, his family's villa was attacked by pirates, who abducted him to their homeland of Ireland and sold him as a slave. It was there, enslaved in a foreign land, that Patrick encountered Jesus. After six years of harsh labor, Patrick finally escaped his oppressors and embarked on a two-year journey home. Safely returned to his family at last, the young man soon began to sense the call of God to do something absolutely mad: journey back to Ireland and share the Gospel with the very people who had enslaved him. Despite fierce opposition, that is exactly what Patrick did. Selflessly, he devoted his life to proclaiming the message of Christ throughout Ireland, by which an entire nation was transformed by the Gospel. As we reflect on the radical, self-giving love of St. Patrick, we recognize the high calling placed on everyone who claims to follow Jesus. Join us this Sunday as our upcoming message challenges how you and I respond to “The World's Hatred” today.

Cristo en el corazón de cada hombre que piense en mí... Cristo en la boca de todos los que hablen de mí... Cristo en cada ojo que me mira... Cristo en cada oído que me escucha De "San Patricio"
On this special one-hour Friday broadcast, Mike D. joins us as a cohost to discuss the occult nature of St. Patrick's Day. Although green is associated with the festival, blue was the original color of the Saint, whose real name was Maewyn Succat - blue was the original color associated with Santa Clause too. This is ironic since St Patrick drove out all the serpents from the Emerald Isle, i.e. a metaphor for the pagans and Druids, who honored nature in its personification as the Green Man. The very green shamrock, or seamroy (Celts), was a very sacred plant in Ireland due to its association with spring renewal. Perhaps a four-leaf clover is most lucky because the four petals symbolize the four elements and seasons, or their eight total notches represent the entire wheel of the year. Even the Leprechaun, or lobaircin, meaning ‘small-bodied fellow', is equated to nature in the form of a fairy, sprite, elf, gnome, etc. These earth-dwellers have magical powers and protect with that magic their treasure below.

Have you ever stopped to wonder about Saint Patrick? Who he was, why do we wear green, why do we drink beer, and why is everyone so merry on March 17th. On today’s wise walk, we are thinking about where in our lives we can ask questions about ourselves or the beliefs and traditions that we follow. So as we stride together, the questions on our minds are: Where in your life can you ask more questions? Is there something you’ve accepted as part of who you are but don’t actually know why? As you get curious, how will your answers and awareness impact your choices and actions? And how can you deepen your understanding of what lights you up and broadens your awareness of what you should celebrate in your life? Saint Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland, but did you know he was not of Irish descent? Patrick was born a Roman citizen because Britain was part of Rome back then, and his birth name was Maewyn Succat. At the age of sixteen, he was captured and taken to NE Ireland, where he was enslaved as a shepherd. After six years, he escaped or was released and ended up in France, there is much more to his story, but you will have to listen to hear the rest. My grandparents came to Ellis Island from Ireland on a boat when they were sixteen or seventeen years old. So taking time to celebrate their history, who they were, and where they came from was a really great way for them to feel connected, understood, and supported. St. Patrick’s day as we know it developed over time. In my family, we have two traditions that my grandma Tess started over fifty years ago, so we almost consider these traditions holidays. We have a Kris Kringle the Saturday before Christmas, and we have a family picnic in July. Pre Covid, we had a great turnout to both because these dates have been honored for my entire life. Thank you so much for helping me get curious and expand my love of learning. Thank you for helping me stretch outside my comfort zone and learn new things about what lights me up and what sparks my Heart Vibe. For now, I am being called to offer this podcast and go on wise walks with you as a way to honor Heart Value that aligns with my True Stride. In this episode: [00:24] Welcome to the show! [01:51] Have you ever stopped to wonder who Saint Patrick is? [03:53] Where in your life can you ask more questions? [04:01] Is there something that you’ve accepted as a part of who you are and what you do, but you don’t actually know how that came to be? [04:13] As you get curious, how will your answers and awareness impact your choices and actions? [04:24] How can you deepen your understanding of what lights you up and broadens your awareness of what you should celebrate in your life? [06:54] Patrick had a clear calling and went back to the mainland as a missionary. [08:57] Where in your life are you passionate and filled with purpose? [09:06] What is the message that you’re being called to share? [09:52] Patrick is known for using the Shamrock as a tool to teach Ireland about the trinity. [11:18] A legend says that Patrick chased all the snakes out of Ireland. [13:46] Did you know the first New York City Parade took place in 1762? [14:52] What do you hope your legacy becomes? [16:23] Let me know how you plan to celebrate St. Patrick’s day. [17:21] I hope you feel my passion for making choices and taking actions that spark my Heart Vibe. [18:05] Thank you for listening! Memorable Quotes: “At the end of the day, we are all striding to move forward.” “I now see the shamrock as a teaching tool.” “I find it interesting that traditions come into existence and then they evolve over time.” “My grandparents took the boat from Ireland to Ellis Island when they were sixteen years old.” “The focus is always on our family and the celebration of love.” “Self-reflect and take time to ask questions.” Links and Resources: Mary Tess Rooney Email Facebook | LinkedIn | Twitter | Instagram

Born a flouting believer in Christianity, a young Maewyn Succat was captured by pirates and sold into slavery at a tender age of 16 where he tended to sheep. During that time of captivity, Maewyn strengthened his relationship with God through prayer; eventually leading to his conversion to Christianity. A few years after escaping captivity, young Maewyn, in a vision, was harkened “We appeal to you, holy servant boy, to come and walk among us” and walk among them, he did. Roaming the countryside he taught the message of Christianity through his analogical shamrock teachings and his legendary expulsion of ophidian creatures. Shedding the Succat name, he became the first successful evangelist of Christianity; The Apostle of Ireland, St. Patrick, and he is once again celebrated by virtue of devotion, tradition, and legend with music, dance, song and a celebratory pint or two. Join Tim Taylor and Mike Shevlin for an extended evening celebrating the first Bishop of Armagh with stories about the life of times of our greatest saint, St. Patrick, with music from Barleyjuice, The Gleasons, The Tossers, Brave Combo, Sharon Shannon with Greg Guy, The High Kings, The Chancey Brothers, Ron Kavana, Girsa, The Great Whiskey Project, The Prodigals, Trian, Katie Grennan, Eileen Ivers, Andy Cooney and the Wolftones. Join Mike and Tim each Wednesday night from 8pm to 9pm on WSBC 1240 AM and WCFJ 1470 AM or listen on our podcast at www.windycityirishradio.com. Happy St. Patrick's Day from Windy City Irish Radio!
Maewyn Succat, born on March 17, 493 by parents, Calpurnius and Conchessa.
