Go onto any parents group in the country and you’ll find comments about arbitrary school uniform rules. Socks falling down, no scarves in class, skirts instead of shorts, and no t-shirts underneath despite not seeing them – and that’s just what our team has seen. And that’s all before we talk about the costs that come with a compulsory uniform. The Act Party is campaigning to make school uniforms more affordable, saying some families are spending well over $1000 a year. The University of Otago’s Dr Johanna Reidy has been involved in research to find out if uniforms had an impact on education and health. She joins us today on The Front Page. It's that time again...Dos & D Uncut! This time we have plenty to catch up on including Dos' spontaneous (large) Thursday night, meeting the world's nicest man and D's parking troubles...which left most of our socials in disgust! Dos found an unusual adult education class our of South Korea which prompted us to look back at the weirdest classes we've attended as adults. Nude drawing classes, bartending and paint and sips. Plus, the most bizarre ones you can find around the world like a practice funeral or how to break up class. D got locked out of a home he was house sitting with the only way back in through the doggy door. Which led to a few classic stories of being stuck. We found some of the funniest places people have gotten stuck in and how they rather embarrassingly got themselves back out again. All this and more on a huge episode of Uncut! I personally subscribe to The Economist. TOE listeners get 35% off the annual subscription. No other podcast has this! https://economist.com/TOE This is a careful lecture that can be followed with zero background knowledge. Einstein thought he'd caught quantum mechanics in an act of spookiness — this podcast asks whether he was even worried about the right thing. Tim Maudlin, professor of philosophy at NYU and a leading philosopher of physics, delivers a rare full lecture tracing Einstein, EPR, and the road to Bell's theorem. The central claim: Einstein's real objection was never determinism — "God does not play dice" is a red herring — but non-locality, which he inferred rather than assumed. Maudlin traces the argument from Einstein's overlooked 1927 Solvay objection through the EPR paper's criterion of reality, showing why Bohr's famous reply never actually answered it. Life is an adventure of choices and consequences.Choices and consequences.I believe that with all my heart. But I do not believe that wise choices will always yield the outcome you desired. The Book of Ecclesiastes is filled with the wisdom and insights of Solomon, who had this to say in chapter nine;“I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favor to men of skill; but Time and Chance happens to them all.”I agree with what Solomon wrote, so I dare not say that a wise choice will always produce the desired outcome. But I will say that in the absence of unlucky timing and plain old bad luck, good Choices usually lead to good Consequences.Vi Wickam, one of my Wizard of Ads partners, wrote 140 words last week that knocked my socks off.I am typing these words to you on a computer that sits on top of my desk. Below that desk are my bare feet.My socks are nowhere to be found. These are the 140 words that Vi Wickam wrote for American Business Secrets.Make a Decision. Many people talk about decisions, but few people understand what it really isto make a decision. Not every choice is a decision.Decide comes from the Latin words “de” – meaning OFF – and “caedere”, meaning to CUT.To decide is to Cut Off the other possibilities.Few things are as powerful as a true decision. To decide is to move in a direction and to cut off the others. To decide is to keep your focus, and to not look back.To decide is to face your fear of loss.Every decision comes with loss, and you must face it.When you face that fear, you will feel relief. You will breathe easier. To decide is to stop second guessing yourself. To decide is to move forward with clear vision, and clear purpose.Make a decision today. With American Business Secrets, I'm Vi Wickam.Do you often have to explain, justify, and defend your decisions?Me, too. These are the 3 key sentences in Vi's 140-word essay that jerked my eyes open and blew my socks away:Not every choice is a decision. To Decide is to Cut Off the other possibilities.Every decision comes with loss, and you must face it.Some people believe that if you delay long enough, a solution will arise that causes no discomfort, no inconvenience, and no awkward moments. You will find these people waiting for their luck to turn, waiting for their ship to come in, waiting for their big break, waiting to begin this long, awkward, funny, delightful and difficult Walk of Life.Roy H. WilliamsSaturday, August 1st, will mark the 150th Anniversary of Colorado's admission to the Union as the 38th state. That milestone might not seem to relevant at first glance, but your opinion will quickly change.Maxwell Rotbart reveals in his new book, “Becoming Colorado,” the Rocky Mountain territory's long struggle for statehood offers valuable lessons for today's business executives in leadership, negotiation, coalition building, crisis management, branding, and strategy.Chief rover Dean joins deputy rover Maxwell to explore the business counsel hidden within Colorado's remarkable journey to statehood. This week's Hemp Show takes us once more back to Poland, where Maciej Kowalski gives us a tour of his vertically integrated hemp textile company in Elbląg, a small town in Northern Poland, not too far from the Baltic Sea. Today we'll let Kowalski guide us as we tour the Kombinat Konopny facility. His approach to business is straightforward: Make things people need. "What do they need? They need socks. They need beanies, they need pants, they need blouses, they need shirts, everything," Kowalski said. "The sock became like the symbol of what we're trying to achieve seven, eight years ago when we started." This episode follows Kowalski as he takes us from blending, carding, and spinning, to decortication and breaking up the bales, giving us a backwards journey from sock, to yarn, to fiber, to bale. EPISODE SUMMARY AND KEY TAKEAWAYSTen years in the NBA. Golden State Warriors, Chicago Bulls, Brooklyn Nets, Indiana Pacers, Orlando Magic. Games overseas in Italy, Greece, Turkey. And when it was all over, CJ Watson sat on his couch and asked himself one question: how do I keep giving back? That question became children's books. A foundation. Free basketball camps. A Black history essay contest with laptops and 529 plans as prizes. And now, a conversation with Bart about what it actually means to be a great human being, not just a great athlete.CJ grew up in Las Vegas with Southern hospitality baked into his bones. Yes sir. No ma'am. Look people in the eye. Give them your name and ask for theirs. He never got drafted, went overseas first, and spent every NBA season knowing it could be his last. That perspective shaped everything. He never saw himself as a celebrity. He saw himself as someone who got lucky enough to do the work.Bart and CJ unpack humanality through the lens of sports, autographs, fatherhood, and the moment a kid at a camp says "we love the book." They talk about what it means to be present, why consistency beats talent most of the time, and how a pair of unwashed orange socks from the University of Tennessee became a lesson about preparation over superstition. This one is warm, grounded, and full of the kind of humanity that makes the MPD audience forward episodes to people they love. What You Will Walk Away WithConsistency beats talent. Every time. CJ's fill-in-the-blank answer came fast: most people don't be consistent. Show up on good days and bad days. Do the work when no one is watching. That is what separates the people who make it from the people who almost did.Humanality on the court. When a fan waits hours to meet you, that moment is not about you. It is about them. Look them in the eye. Ask their name. Use it. CJ named all three steps of Humanality without being asked: I see you, be where your feet are, and just ask.Legacy is not what you keep. It is what you give away. CJ gave away his first NBA jersey. He gave away his time, his stories, his books. He started a foundation so that kids growing up in Las Vegas have resources his family had to figure out alone. You cannot take it with you. That is the whole point. The magic was never in the socks. CJ wore the same pair of unwashed orange socks every time he played well in college. But the real lesson from his children's book is the one he figured out later: it was never the socks. It was the preparation, the film study, the discipline, the showing up. The socks just gave him permission to believe in himself.Your parents are your first coaches. CJ's parents talked him out of quitting overseas. They showed up to games in college, flew to NBA cities, and built the foundation underneath him before he ever knew he needed one. His whole message to his own three daughters comes from the same place: look people in the eye, say please, say thank you, and never stop.Great dads make great leaders. The greatest feeling CJ described had nothing to do with the NBA. It was watching his daughter block a volleyball. Legacy is not built on a court. It is built in the stands.Learn more about CJ Watson and his foundation at quietstormfoundation.org and connect with CJ Watson on LinkedIn.Most People Don't. But You DO!

This episode comes to you live from our pop-up studio at the CommerceNext Growth Show in New York City. Our guest: Jason LaRose, CEO of Bombas — the brand that turned socks, underwear, and tees into a mission-powered growth machine, with more than 200 million essential clothing items donated to people experiencing homelessness. But first, the news — and in our summer biweekly format, there's plenty. Steve breaks down Nike's unimpressive quarter: revenues down, China off 12%, and an operating profit boost driven almost entirely by a nearly billion-dollar one-time tariff refund. The contrast with Levi's couldn't be sharper — under Michelle Gass, the brand posted 8% sales growth, expanding margins, and momentum across women's and tops. The winners keep winning elsewhere too. Aritzia's remarkable run continues with comps up an eye-popping 35% and digital up nearly 60%. Uniqlo parent Fast Retailing delivers 22% revenue growth from its 2,500-store global fleet. And Costco's monthly numbers offer fresh evidence of retail's Great Concentration. Then there's Kroger, acquiring regional grocery powerhouse Giant Eagle — a $9 billion revenue business bought at a strikingly low multiple. Michael and Steve debate the real question: does acquiring-to-compete solve Kroger's relevance problem, or just buy cost leverage against Walmart, Costco, and Amazon? Then it's on to Jason LaRose, who joined Bombas after leadership roles at Under Armour and Equinox. What drew him in: a genuine mission wrapped around outstanding economics — profitable essentially since day one. He traces the brand's arc from Indiegogo campaign and Shark Tank's most successful company ever to nearly $2 billion in cumulative sales, now expanding into underwear, tees, footwear, and slippers — the very items most requested in homeless shelters. LaRose also delivers a masterclass in disciplined distribution: highly curated wholesale partnerships with Target, Dick's, Nordstrom, and Scheels, each with distinct assortments for distinct customers, alongside the brand's first stores and expansion into Canada. His mantra — quality, comfort, mission, in that order — explains why repeat rates keep the funnel from leaking where so many DTC peers sprang holes. Wrapping up, on Steve's radar: a Dallas-area tour of the newly merged Container Store and Bed Bath & Beyond format (who exactly is this store for?), plus his provocative new Substack essay, "Convenience is Boring." On Michael's radar: the soon-to-open Gordie Howe Bridge, his conversation with U.S. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra, and why USMCA review limbo keeps piling uncertainty — and cost — onto businesses and consumers across North America. In this episode, hosts Chris Armstrong and Zac Newman dive into the latest updates from the local running scene, starting with a breakdown of their recent training weeks. Chris highlights his recent work, including a solid 77km week and 8x1km intervals, as he gears up for upcoming races like the Bundoora XCR and Lakeside 10km. Zac discusses his experience racing the Calder Park Relays—an event that left both hosts questioning the choice of venue while still finding the racing element enjoyable. The conversation then shifts to the main guest, returning to the show is Jason "Jase" Smith from Oat Running. Jase shares insights into his evolution as a runner since his last appearance on episode 192, detailing how he manages a hectic schedule——alongside his passion for pacing major marathons. Jase explains why he and his partner, Jess, prioritize face-to-face feedback at expos and local run meets over traditional digital advertising. By staying deeply embedded in local run groupsthey have built a brand rooted in trust and genuine performance. Jase also discusses the durability of their gear, noting that while it's great for the customer, it means they have to continuously innovate with new colorways to keep the community engaged. The episode also highlights some exciting developments for the brand, including the move into select retail stores across South Australia and Victoria. Jase shares his enthusiasm for upcoming events, specifically looking forward to meeting listeners at the upcoming Sweat vs. Steam expo. Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour
June 16 first through 5:25 As explained in an earlier installment, the Arizal warned that putting on two articles of clothing simultaneously could have an adverse effect on a person, causing him to forget his Torah knowledge. This gives rise to the question of whether one may put on his shoes when they are inside rubbers. Often, in the winter, people take off their shoes when entering the home together with the rubbers, keeping the shoes inside the rubbers. Then, when they go back out into the snow, they simply put the shoes with the rubbers on their feet. Seemingly, this should be discouraged, as one must refrain from putting on two articles of clothing at the same time. Rav Tzvi Pesach Frank (Jerusalem, 1873-1960) cites a source claiming that the Arizal's teaching does not apply to garments made from rubber, in which case there is no concern in this regard. However, the Sitz Eliezer (Rav Eliezer Waldenberg, 1915-2006) questioned this theory, noting that there seems to be no reason to differentiate between rubber and other materials. The Arizal taught that when placing two articles of clothing at the same time, the inner garment does not receive the "Or Ha'makif" (supernal light) that surrounds garments to protect them from the harmful spiritual forces. This concern certainly appears to be relevant to rubbers no less than to garments made from other materials. Nevertheless, Hacham Ovadia ruled leniently in this regard, and allowed putting on shoes that are already inside rubbers. This is based on a comment of the Aruch Ha'shulhan (Rav Yechiel Michel Epstein of Nevarduk, 1829-1908) that the Arizal's teaching does not apply to shoes. The Aruch Ha'shulhan does not explain why shoes would differ from other garments in this regard, but Hacham Ovadia suggested that since the shoes touch the ground, which has impurity, they cannot be protected from impurity, and so they do not receive the "Or Ha'makif." Socks, however, are not treated as shoes. The Ben Ish Hai (Rav Yosef Haim of Baghdad, 1833-1909) ruled that although one who touches shoes must then wash his hands, one does not require hand washing after touching his socks. Some Poskim disagree, but Halacha follows this view of the Ben Ish Hai. This lenient ruling yields a stringent conclusion with regard to the question of putting on two socks at the same time. Since socks are treated by Halacha differently than shoes, the Aruch Ha'shulhan's leniency does not apply. Therefore, one who wishes to wear two pairs of socks for extra warmth must put on one after the other, and may not wrap one sock in the other and then put them both on together.
Jenn talks about their house rules on underwear and socks with holes in them.
You know what a five-minute task looks like when a kid doesn't want to do it? An hour-long standoff. Socks on the floor. Full dramatic collapse. And the worst part is, that kid is also missing out on the thing they actually wanted to do — playtime they could have been having — because now they're in a battle that didn't need to happen.Sound familiar? Because I do it too. Not on the floor, not with the socks, but the mechanism is exactly the same. And that's what this episode is about.Avoidance Isn't Free. We think of avoidance as a break — a little breathing room before we tackle the hard thing. But what's actually happening is we're adding every undone task to a mental backpack we carry through the entire day. The gym you meant to hit. The email you're dreading. The bill you keep not looking at. Each one is a background process running in your brain, quietly draining your energy and your focus, popping up with mild guilt every time it surfaces. Two Versions of Your Day. I walk through what it actually looks like to compare the day where you do the planned thing first versus the day where you negotiate with yourself until 10pm. The first version is done and forgotten in 30 minutes. The second version haunts you all day and you probably still don't do the thing. The ADHD Layer. For those of us with ADHD, this pattern can run deeper — the executive function piece makes it genuinely harder to initiate tasks even when we want to do them. This isn't laziness. But understanding the pattern is still the first step whether or not ADHD is part of your picture.Mel Robbins and the 5-Second Rule. I'm not here to reinvent something that's already been figured out. Mel Robbins cracked this one open with a beautifully simple move: when you feel the impulse to act, count backwards from five and go before your brain builds a case against it. It interrupts the internal committee meeting before the agenda even gets distributed.Three Concrete Moves. Name it (you can't change what you don't see), shrink it (the first 30 seconds of a task, not the whole thing), and do the countdown. That's it. You're not building a system. You're just deciding not to sit on the floor. The real payoff isn't productivity for its own sake. It's the rest you've actually earned at the end of a day where you did the thing you said you were going to do.Jill's Linkshttp://jillfromthenorthwoods.comhttps://www.youtube.com/@startwithsmallstepshttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/startwithsmallstepshttps://twitter.com/schmernEmail the podcast at jill@startwithsmallsteps.comBy choosing to watch this video or listen to this podcast, you acknowledge that you are doing so of your own free will. Socks are the #1 most requested item at homeless shelters. Dave Heath turned that single fact into Bombas — a one-for-one apparel brand that's donated over 200 million items of clothing and built a billion-dollar business along the way. What makes Dave a builder worth studying isn't just the scale; it's the discipline behind it: reverse-engineering an exceptional product from a mission, learning to test before betting, and protecting a brand as it grows. In this episode, I sit down with Dave to break down:• How he reverse-engineered an "exceptional product" from a donation mission — and brought athletic-sock innovation to the mass market• The Shark Tank breakout: from $800K to $2M in revenue in the six weeks after airing — and why ~20% of customers still affiliate Bombas with the show• The expensive lesson of expanding into adjacent products too fast — and the MVP-testing discipline that replaced it• Why the "obvious" extensions (underwear, t-shirts) underperformed while a sleeper bet (slippers) became 20% of the business• Radical-ish transparency: telling the whole company about a planned IPO and trusting adults to keep it quiet — and they did• The mark of a great founder: the self-awareness to evolve his own role as the company scaled, and how he screened his successor for humility• How Bombas is approaching AI — getting the whole company trained on Claude and Claude Code, and why building AI as a competency beat chasing shiny enterprise toolsBig thanks to Dave for coming on the pod and sharing the playbook — and the mindset — behind Bombas.⏱️ Chapter Markers:00:00 — Intro. Send us Fan MailAaron jumps on solo for a serious episode about the reported Air Force Special Warfare Zulu course ruck event, why it matters, and what candidates need to understand right now. This episode focuses on reports of a heavy evaluated ruck in the Zulu course, including a 10-mile ruck with roughly 100+ pounds, a 15-minute pace standard, full uniform and equipment requirements, Texas heat and humidity, medical concerns, heat casualties, and the larger question of whether the event is operationally valid, properly risk-managed, and appropriately messaged to candidates before they arrive.Aaron also talks directly to future Air Force Special Warfare candidates: if this event exists in the pipeline, you need to prepare differently. Running still matters, but rucking, foot conditioning, equipment setup, hydration, recovery, pacing, boots, socks, and load management now matter even more. This is not about making the pipeline easy. Shane and Gemma also revisit Delegate C.T. Wilson, the abuse survivor who championed the Child Victims Act, and journalist Tom Nugent, whose reporting first brought the case back into the light. The FilmmakersGemma catches listeners up on the team behind The Keepers, director Ryan White, producer Jessica Hargrave, and cinematographer John Benham, whose work since the series includes the Oscar-nominated, Peabody-winning documentary Come See Me in the Good Light. On paper, Nick Reiner is the sole beneficiary of a trust worth more than $1.5 million. In reality, the newest filing in the Nick Reiner trust fund fight says he petitioned a judge partly so he can buy socks. This one starts with the smallest number in the file — the $300 cap on a jail commissary account at Twin Towers that, per the petition, was promised funding and never received a single deposit — and climbs all the way up to the biggest battle in this case outside the murder charges themselves. The petition accuses the trustee of offering “a shifting series of excuses and justifications” for withholding a payout the trust calls mandatory and unconditional. First he reportedly couldn't access the accounts. Then came “concerns” about Nick's competence — without a court order or a doctor's finding behind them. Then the shadow of California's slayer statute. Meanwhile, the filing claims, the consultant brought in to evaluate Nick is being paid presumably out of Nick's own funds — the fight over the money is literally being billed to the money. We break down everything he's actually asking for — the overdue age-30 distribution plus every dollar of interest since 2023, the age-35 money released early, damages from the trustee for breach of trust — and we're honest about which of those asks the law actually supports. Where it leans his way will surprise you. Where it doesn't might surprise you more. And through all of it, one image refuses to leave: a man staring down possible capital charges, heir on paper to Hollywood money, asking a court for hygiene products. True Crime Today follows the file — even when it goes somewhere nobody's comfortable.LINKS:Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Hey friend, welcome back to Real Life Conversations from the Porch! This week's episode came straight from a real moment in my own life — and honestly, I think it might hit a little close to home for you too.I'm coming to you fresh off a beautiful camping weekend with Farmer Dale, and I wanted to share something I've been sitting with: the idea that the little things are never really just about the little things. It started with my sock drawer.Yep — you heard that right. My sock drawer had quietly become a mess over the last six to eight months. Socks separated from their pairs, things tossed about, worn-out ones taking up space long past their time. And every time I opened that drawer, something inside me cringed. Maybe you know that feeling. Maybe it's a drawer in your bathroom, your kitchen, your garage. Here's what I've come to understand: that cringe isn't you being dramatic. Research tells us that our brains are constantly scanning our environment and registering disorder — even when we're not consciously aware of it. That low-grade irritation you feel when the mail piles up, the laundry sits in the basket too long, or the friend you've been meaning to call keeps getting pushed to the back burner? Those are signals. And they're trying to get your attention. When the manageable things start slipping, it's almost always a sign that something bigger is going on underneath. So what do we do with that? We pause. We bring it to the surface. We notice it without shame — because grace is always the way.In this episode, I also share how the 90-Day Reset built into the Real Life Process was made for exactly these moments — and why we need resets in small ways (weekly), medium ways (quarterly), and big ways (annually) to keep our lives from owning us instead of the other way around. And there's an exciting announcement! This fall, I'm opening up the farm — Farmer Dale's family farm right here in Southern Illinois — for a very small, very intentional Real Life Living Farm Experience. Think a handful of people, beautiful fall scenery, and real space to breathe and reset. If you want to be the first to know when dates are set, reply with the word FARM wherever you're finding me, or email me directly at teresa@thereallifeprocess.com.

Best of all, you will connect with your Celtic heritage. Please tell one friend about this podcast. Word of mouth is the absolute best way to support any creative endeavor. Clean energy is one of the most powerful tools we have to fight climate change. Solar, wind, hydro - every kilowatt of clean power pushes fossil fuels a little further out the door. The big picture matters. And so do the small choices you make every day. This week's tip comes from the 5 Rs of Sustainability. The second one is Reduce. You don't have to go off the grid to make a difference. Just use less. Turn off lights you don't need. Buy fewer things you don't use. Cut back where you can. Small reductions add up fast - and they cost you nothing. Your wallet and the planet will both thank you. Promote Celtic culture through music at http://celticmusicpodcast.com/. River replied to my question, "how does the podcast make your life better?"Marc, Your music and podcasts have helped me through so many parts of my life! Without knowing it, you have seen me through multiple deaths in my family, broken relationships, moving from one state to another, and multiple surgeries. Of course you have also been there through the many good times, such as meeting my awesome wife and the birth of our daughter! I found your podcast back in 05 or 06 while living in Florida by chance and became an instant fan. It took no time for me to download all of your music and the Brobdingnagian Bards music I could! Congratulations on over 20 years of podcasting and (if my math is right) about 3 decades of music! Keep up the amazing work! Your Constant Listener, ~River" Woodland Folk sent a picture of a fiddler. Is that Woodland Folk? He didn't say, but thank you for the photo! Cristen Y messaged on Patreon: "Greetings! I found a few resources on my own about keening! Not sure if you know about these folks but there is a great podcast I found called Candlelit Tales. The hosts tell Irish stories and then discuss them afterwards; they talked about keening on their March 15, 2020 episode titled "Whelans Live - Queen of the Banshee" in case you want to check it out :) I appreciate you!"
