Thank you for listening.   So I wake up the other day, and like a lot of you do, I check my email first thing. Friends of the Rosary,Saints are like anyone else, despite how we consider them as spiritual heroes preserved from our day-to-day activities. They struggled with the same things we do, and loved the same things we do. They are not simply models to be admired. There are saints in ordinary life, in art and poetry, in motherhood, psychology, and even politics. There is a huge diversity. Each one uniquely reflects some aspect of the divine reality. The only difference is that they were smart enough to understand that what finally matters is having a holy life by being the person that God wants us to be.Above all, the saints are friends of God.And we can find a saint who is like every one of us.Léon Bloy wrote, "There is only one sadness, and that is not to be saints."Let's keep in mind that only people in heaven will be saints.Bishop Barron wrote about the diversity of saints:"There is Thomas Aquinas, the towering intellectual, and there is the Curé d'Ars, who barely made it through the seminary. There is Vincent de Paul, a saint in the city, and there is Antony, who found sanctity in the harshness and loneliness of the desert. There is Bernard, kneeling on the hard stones of Clairvaux in penance for sins, and there is Hildegard of Bingen, singing and throwing flowers, madly in love with God. There is Peter, the hard-nosed and no-nonsense fisherman, and there is Edith Stein, secretary to Edmund Husserl and colleague to Martin Heidegger, one of the most famous philosophers of the twentieth century. There is Joan of Arc leading armies, and there is Francis of Assisi channeling peace. There is the irascible Jerome and the almost too sweet Thérèse of Lisieux. There is Catherine of Siena, who stood up to popes, and Celestine V, who only reluctantly became pope. There is the grave and serious Bruno, and there is Philip Neri, whose spirituality was based on laughter."Ave Maria!Come, Holy Spirit, come!To Jesus through Mary! Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will. Please give us the grace to respond with joy!+ Mikel Amigot w/ María Blanca | RosaryNetwork.com, New YorkEnhance your faith with the new Holy Rosary University app:Apple iOS | New! This lecture looks at the 'surreal' art of the Early Netherlandish painter Jheronimus Bosch within its historical and cultural context. Although Bosch's terrifying visions of sin, death, and the hereafter may appear surreal today, especially his highly imaginative depictions of devils, they were tied to the religious attitudes and moralising texts of the period, such as the Ars moriendi, the Dance of Death, and Everyman. It is in this context that one should examine Bosch's Haywain Triptych, Garden of Earthly Delights, and other works. This lecture was recorded by Dr Sophie Oosterwijk FSA on the 10th of December 2025 at Barnard's Inn Hall, London.Sophie is Vice President of The Church Monuments Society and was for many years editor of its journal Church Monuments. Born in Gouda (Netherlands), she is a recognised specialist in Early Netherlandish and Dutch art. After studying English at Leiden and Medieval Studies at York, she obtained two doctorates in Art History (Leicester) and English Literature (Leiden). She previously taught art history at the Universities of Leicester, Manchester and St Andrews.  Since her return to the Netherlands, Sophie has been working as a freelance researcher and guest lecturer for the University of Cambridge, The Arts Society (formerly NADFAS), and other organisations.

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 29, 2025 17:06

What sparks fly at a holiday get together in Dublin? Hopefully the good kind…James Joyce, today on The Classic Tales Podcast.   Welcome to The Classic Tales Podcast. Thank you for listening.   Have you listened to the Fu-Manchu trilogy? How about the John Carter Trilogy? How about all 51 hours of The Count of Monte Cristo? With the audiobook library card, you can listen to all this and more for only $9.99 a month. Unlimited downloads and streaming of the entire Classic Tales Library. Go to audiobooklibrarycard.com or follow the link in the show notes.   Today's story is considered one of the great short stories of English literature. Appearing as the final tale in his short story collection, Dubliners, James Joyce builds the complex atmosphere of a Holiday dance in Dublin.   One thing to look out for is how the point of view of the narrative changes constantly, almost like it's a living thing. The use of phrasing is also noteworthy, sometimes sharp and staccato, and sometimes smooth and flowing. It's as though the language itself has a tempo, texture, and pitch all its own. As though the story were a musical piece in and of itself. Hopefully this becomes even clearer in an audio format. I hope you like it.     And now, The Dead, Part 1 of 2,  by James Joyce   Follow this link to get The Audiobook Library Card for a special price of $6.99/month       Follow this link to subscribe to our YouTube Channel:       Follow this link to subscribe to the Arsène Lupin Podcast:     Follow this link to follow us on Instagram:     Follow this link to follow us on Facebook:
