The Holyoke St. Patrick's Day Parade and Road Race are traditions in the Paper City and across the 413. They are events, but they are much more than that. They bring families and communities together, and they are economic engines — for Holyoke, but also the entire region. On the next episode of BusinessTalk, contributing writer George O'Brien talks with Hayley Dunn, 2024 president of the parade and road race, about all this and much more. They discuss everything from who's in charge of the weather — the grand marshal — to having the parade on St. Patrick's Day itself. But mostly, they talk about all that goes into putting these events on, and how the suspense builds in the weeks and days leading up to March 17. It's must listening, so tune in to BusinessTalk, a podcast presented by BusinessWest and sponsored by PeoplesBank.

Today, I'll be chatting with Jack Armstrong. Jack has an interesting relationship with Ireland. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, both of his parents were immigrants from the west of Ireland. Jack speaks about how this shaped his identity growing up in New York. He also speaks of his Irish identity in Toronto. Jack is currently an NBA analyst for TSN and the on-air in-game broadcaster for the Toronto Raptors and has been since 1998. Consequently, Jack was afforded the opportunity to be honoured as the Grand Marshal of the Toronto St. Patrick's Day Parade in 2023. It was in Quinn's Pub on Richmond St. after the parade where I met Jack. He is a genuinely sound person and I am delighted he agreed to take time out of his schedule during the season to have this chat with me. I hope you enjoy it. I would still encourage people to download the episodes and to share them with friends and family. Downloads are the easiest indicator for me to gauge how many people I am reaching with these conversations so I would really appreciate it.

Today, I'll be chatting with Hugo Straney. Hugo is the voice of the Irish community here in Canada and has been since he began hosting his own show on CHIN Radio back in 1988.I would say that Hugo is the most ubiquitous Irish person in Toronto. He shows up everywhere, from commentating on the St. Patrick's Day Parade and the GAA finals to hosting the Toronto Rose of Tralee and his own radio show every Sunday morning at 10am, he has done it all. An energetic and engaging person, Hugo has been providing a link to home for the many of the Irish community here in Canada for over thirty years. On a personal level, the fascinating conversations he has on his radio show inspired me to initially put together this podcast so I would like to thank him for that. His journey from Belfast to Toronto as a teenager in the 1970s is a fascinating one and I know you'll enjoy it.

“This is something that connected our region like never before.'” - Eileen Weir There's a famous saying that goes, “It only takes one tree to start a forest, one smile to begin a friendship... one thought to change the world” and that's exactly what happened in the Kansas City community through the Parade of Hearts that began from one drawing on a napkin. During its last auction in 2022, it raised more than $2 million for Kansas City charities. During today's episode, Dr. Michelle invites Jenn Nussbeck and Eileen Weir to share how this project began, the doors that it opened in our community, and the opportunity it provided to build connections with people in different neighborhoods across the metro. They also explain why public art has become a crucial piece to our community's well-being and why it evoked certain senses for the people who live here. Jenn will also tell a moving story about two people who met at one of the hearts and how that location formed their new friendship. At the end of the episode, they will give listeners an exclusive update about what's next for the Parade of Hearts in Kansas City, which means you will be the first to hear it on this episode! About Today's Guests: Jenn Nussbeck is the Parade of Hearts Executive Director. She has served on numerous public charity boards as well as dedicated the last 15 years supporting organizations throughout communities in Kansas City. Assisting those navigating the philanthropy and civic channels is not only her work, but her passion. Jenn was born in San Diego but raised in Kansas City. She comes from a large Irish family. Her great uncle (Pat O'Neill Sr.) started the Kansas City St. Patrick's Day Parade with Mike Murphy. Eileen Weir was elected Mayor of the City of Independence, Missouri, in 2014. Prior to her election, she served on the Independence City Council representing the city's 4th District from 2012 to 2014. She began her career in communications and public relations with the Kansas City Chiefs in 1992, acting as the team's Manager of Public Information and Media Services. She served as the Chiefs Charity Game Coordinator from 2009 to 2013 for the Children's Center for the Visually Impaired and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Kansas City. We just reedited and reworked our 2017 show on Irish immigration in time for St. Patrick's Day and a celebration of all things Irish! So much has changed in our world since 2017 and this history feels more relevant and impactful than ever before. You don't have a New York City without the Irish. In fact, you don't have a United States of America as we know it today. This diverse and misunderstood immigrant group began coming over from Ireland in significant numbers starting in the Colonial era, mostly as indentured servants. In the early 19th century, these Irish arrivals, both Protestants and Catholics, were already consolidating — via organizations like the Ancient Order of the Hibernians and in places like St. Patrick's Cathedral. But starting in the 1830s, with a terrible blight wiping out Ireland's potato crops, a mass wave of Irish immigration would dwarf all that came before, hundreds of thousands of weary, sometimes desperate newcomers who entered New York to live in its most squalid neighborhoods. The Irish were among the laborers who built the Croton Aqueduct, the New York grid plan and Central Park. Irish women comprised most of the hired domestic help by the mid 19th century. The arrival of the Irish and their assimilation into American life is a story repeated in many cities. Here in New York City, it is essential in our understanding of the importance of modern immigrant communities to the life of the Big Apple.PLUS: The origins of New York's St. Patrick's Day Parade!Other shows you may enjoy:The Civil War Draft RiotsJacob Riis: 'The Other Half' of the Gilded AgeBattery Park and Castle ClintonThe Story of Five PointsBowery Boys Movie Club: Gangs of New York
“We feel it's no coincidence that hotel came up for sale. We were determined to decorate it, to renovate it, in a way that reflects the spirit of Dorthy and the elegance of the Festival.” We're in great company with Richard & Eibhlin Henggeler, owners of The Rose Hotel, in Tralee, County Kerry, Ireland. Now, before they took on this hotel as a labor of love, I must share my personal connection with and admiration for the Henggeler family. Eibhlin, who to me will always be Mrs. Henggeler, was one of my favorite elementary school teachers growing up outside of Baltimore, MD. We held a special bond, that of an Irish Celtic Knot one could say, because as my younger sisters and I traveled the country and soon the world, competing in and performing Irish Dance, Mrs. Henggeler was always the one to approve of our absent papers and to be there every year without fail, watching us dance in the annual St. Patrick's Day Parade, while her daughter Dott proudly represented The Rose of Tralee. Now many years have gone by and while the Henggeler's have faced many hardships, their love for their Irish heritage and the relationships like ours, that have blossomed as a result, are stronger than ever. For this episode, I'd like to honor Dorthy's spirit with an Irish Blessing, "May the Irish hills caress you. May her lakes and rivers bless you. May the luck of the Irish enfold you. May the blessings of Saint Patrick behold you." Top Takeaways [2:20] From pen pals to a proposal, Dick shares how he fell in love with Eibhlin, her family, and her home in Ireland. [6:45] Eibhlin explains how over time she's honored her Irish heritage by staying closely tied to family, football and of course, Irish dancing. [8:30] What about The Rose of Tralee International Festival changed the Henggeler family's lives and inspired their legacy. [14:45] When The Fels Point Hotel went up for sale, Dick and Eibhlin were determined to restore it in a way that reflected the spirit of their Dorthy and the elegance of the Festival. [24:00] Wanting to create a true family atmosphere, Dick thought it would be a good idea to bring the tradition of an American Thanksgiving to a hotel in Ireland and what resulted was… [33:45] Whether you enjoy a spa day while sipping on afternoon tea or watching a football match cozied up to Dott's Bar, everyone is welcome! [40:40] Eibhlin shares what she believes Dott would be most proud of in seeing The Rose Hotel and all that it embodies today. [45:05] What it's like to walk down the cobblestone streets of Tralee, listening to traditional Irish music and meeting the Irish people. Remember the time when the earth was green, there were more kind of drunks than you'd ever seen, they ran around free when it was St Paddy's day but the loveliest of all was the Leprechaun. So this is the story when I got the be in the Chicago St Patrick Day Parade with my beloved local bar Johnny Ohagans. The day-long festivities started real early with a hearty Irish breakfast to get the juices flowing, heading to the parade to wait and drink and wait and drink until the parade began. Then more drinking and shenanigans throughout the day. I thought I was doing myself a favor by ending the St Patrick's day party early so I could go home and order food but instead while I was waiting on my food I passed out and missed my delivery. Did you know the parade is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit? We didn't realize that either! Also, what does Mark Cuban have to do with the parade? Find out by listening. The merchants on and around Greenville Ave. came together and formed the Greenville Avenue Area Business Association (G.A.A.B.A.) to help unify the businesses and promote the Greenville Avenue area. Its first objective is and always will be the presentation of the Annual Greenville Ave. St. Patrick's Day Parade. This parade is considered a Dallas tradition and is the largest St. Patrick's Parade in the South. Witnessing the Dallas St. Patrick's Parade & Festival (formerly knows as the “Greenville Ave St. Patrick's Parade) puts you in a quasi fraternity of sorts. It's a little like going to Mardi Gras and then again not so much. This occasion is truly unique. The parade has become the signature event of the St. Patrick's celebration for our fair city. Many Dallasites have attended and bared witness to the evolution of this neighborhood parade from about ten pickup trucks and a couple of flatbeds to the largest St. Patrick's parade in the Southwest.Connect with us! Season 2, Episode 38 - This month is one of rebirth with spring's arrival, celebrations of Irish heritage and more. And there's a combination of the two with the reopening of Siamsa Irish Pub in downtown Stroudsburg just in time for the annual St. Patrick's Day Parade on March 19th. Siamsa is a staple in the Poconos for its traditional Irish fare and Guinness on tap and bounced back from some water damage when a pipe burst around the holidays and is now ready for its equivalent of Super Bowl Sunday – with the parade in mid March. The Poconos is a year-round destination for millions and with 24-hundred square miles of mountains, forests, lakes and rivers with historic downtowns and iconic family resorts, it's the perfect getaway for a weekend or an entire week. You can always find out more on PoconoMountains.com or watch Pocono Television Network streaming live 24/7.
