This week on It Was a Thing on TV we're going 20 minutes into the future! First, before this week's episodes, we discuss the future of the podcast here on Place to be Nation POP and then discuss what's to come in the coming year. Then, we start by talking about one of the biggest pop culture sensations in the 1980s who was an omnipresent personality for the computer generation named Max Headroom. Not only was Max Headroom a talk show host, a soda pitchman, and visible on different mediums in the latter half of the 80s, but this phenomenon even got a scripted television show which ran over two seasons, a show about a post-apocalyptic dystopia reminiscent of 1984. Finally, in 1987, the signals of both WGN and WTTV in Chicago were overtaken by two brief unknown signals, both showing an unknown figure wearing a Max Headroom mask. To this day, there are more answers than questions about these incidents: Who did this? How did they do it? Why did they do it? To this day, these brief interruptions remain one of the biggest mysteries to occur on U.S. broadcast television. How do you compile the best of a year? Try almost impossible but we managed to cull ten vignettes from 36 compelling interviews. While we left out such wonderful segments from the likes of Greeny (Mike Greenberg), Bob Costas, Ron Coomer, Laura Okmin and Len Kasper just to mention a few, we stitched together ones from ten alluring episodes. For example: Mark Giangreco and Dan McNeil, two towering figures in Chicago media who were fired many believe, because of today's political correctness. And then there was Sarah Kustok and Eddie Olczyk who overcame adversity to remain atop their professions. Keith Olbermann and Dave Wannstedt relay hilarious stories, one about coming to Chicago and other who nearly did.We were very fortunate to have 36 worthwhile contributors be so accommodating and willing to share so much of their lives with us. We can't thank them enough for lifting “Tell me a story I don't know” to a standard we are most proud of.And we're ready to go with year 2 on January 18th, a two part episode with one of the most recognizable figures in Chicago's sports media landscape. Thank you TJ Rives, Will Hatczel, Tatiana Shinkan and Nick Tocci for all of your great support behind the scenes. For nearly 39 years, Mark Giangreco was the face of Chicago television sports. He was creative, irreverent, wickedly funny and controversial. It caught up with him in January when a remark he made about one of the news anchors resulted in his departure from WLS-TV after a 24 year run. He spent the first 15 at the NBC affiliate having arrived from Louisville, a fresh face on the verge of turning 30. It didn't take long for his somewhat whacky and wise cracking style to catch on. He was a central figure in the local TV sports wars entangling several other notable sports anchors in what made for a riveting rivalry. Whether it was an ill fated though widely watched pairing with ex Chicago Bear Steve “Mongo” McMichael or celebrated battles with his competitors, Giangreco thrived. “Back then (the late 80s and 90s) you could get away with anything” admitted Giangreco. “It was renegade, Wild West TV.” He was also paired with reporter Janet Davies for WLS-TV's new year's eve celebrations and it was ratings smash for 22 years! She too, was dismissed from the station.Giangreco remains a contributor to WMVP's afternoon sports talk show and appears as if he's not quite ready to call it a career. Then again he could turn to hot rod cars, a long time passion but don't bet on it. There's plenty of gas left in this celebrated sportscaster's tank.Hear him on this edition of "Tell Me a Story I Don't Know" and make sure to subscribe/rate and review us on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, etc.!!Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
