Howie Zales is an Emmy Awarded camera operator who started his career at the NFL Network and NBC Sports. His passion for broadcasting led him to found Viridity Entertainment Services (VES), a streaming and professionally-recorded in-house productions service offering TV-quality livestream to corporations. Their clients include T Mobile, Capital One, The Food Network, hip hop group Salt-N-Pepa, and more. His other company, which he founded and has operated for over 24 years, is HJC Productions, Inc., a nationwide television crewing company for sports, entertainment and studio productions. Howie also mentors the next generation of freelance technicians through his mentoring program The Broadcast Sports Course. Howie Zales: “ Growing up I was super into sports, baseball being my favorite. Like any kid or friend my age, I wanted to play professional sports as my job. "I knew I was headed for sports. I just didn't know where or how. “ In 11th grade, I needed one class to fill out my course selection. There was an elective that was a TV production class. The description was: a trip to New York City to tour NBC studios and 30 Rockefeller Center, and watching a TV show being taped. I thought ‘how bad could it be!' “I ended up loving the class. I loved my teacher, Mrs. Jason, and her husband was a field producer for Good Morning America who spoke to the class on a lot of occasions. “I already had a love of sports, and now I had this new passion for TV. I also knew I needed a backup to my professional baseball plan. BOOM! Now I knew exactly what I wanted to do. I was going to get into sports TV”.

The college football season goes from now until the end of the regular season on Dec. 14, with the national championship game slated to be played in late January. And Michael Azevedo's guest on this episode of Making Media Now is 6-time Emmy winning live sports producer and director Jerry Weinstein (aka Dubber or JDub), the president and CEO of JDUB Productions, will be deploying a small army of TV production crews throughout the land to cover every acrobatic catch, crushing sack, and hard-fought touchdown! JDUB Productions has been packaging—and we discuss fully what exactly packaging entails—since 1998 for clients such as ESPN, CBS, ABC, and Fox Sports. They currently produce more than 180 live events annually. In addition to heading up all those broadcasting efforts, Dubber is also the Director for the NBA's LA Lakers. Dubber spoke to meet from his home in Manhattan Beach, CA. We discussed a whole range of live sports production issues and even managed to sneak a discussion of the upcoming NFL season. Making Media Now is sponsored by Filmmakers Collaborative, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting media makers from across the creative spectrum. From providing fiscal sponsorship to presenting an array of informative and educational programs, Filmmakers Collaborative supports creatives at every step in their journey. Mike and Rico get straight to business to start the show, reacting to what A.J. Hinch had to say about the Tigers' recent struggles yesterday after getting swept by the Royals. They stick with this topic for the first hour, shifting to a discussion on if TV networks are ruining sports as we know it. The guys cover a lot in the third hour, including some comments made by Dan Campbell about Jameson Williams' progress this offseason. Then, they react to the breaking news that the Pistons are hiring Trajan Langdon as their head of basketball operations.
