9-20-2022 Passed Ball Show. John makes his return to the PBS by reminding those who need to know that Barry Bonds is still the MLB single season home run leader. He talks a little bit about Aaron Judge's season and laughs at anybody that thinks he is not the AL MVP. John then talks anout the obsession with the LA Angels MVP club. The same people that thought that Mike Trout should have won the award from 2012-2019 think Shohei Ohtani should win every year he both hits and pitches. John reminds the viewers that the Angels season went to shit because they fired Joe Maddon before talking about some of the disappointing teams in the National Football League. The Colts, Titans, and Bengals stand out and John discusses why all could miss out on playing postseason football. John then goes off on the offseason darlings of the NFL, the Denver Broncos. John laughs at all the rhetoric whether it was Russell Wilson, the offensive minded Head Coach, and all those that automatically punched Denver's ticket to Super Bowl LVI. Finally, John talks about the obsession with the NFL Backup Quarterback, especially the rookie- just drafted QB. John reiterates that the draft class lacked talent at the position, but it will not stop pundits and fans for wanting to see the likes of Kenny Pickett, Desmond Ridder, and Malik Willis, simply because they have not played. John doubles down by stating that none of the three will be a regular starter in the NFL in three (3) years. Check back with you then
In the second hour of Inside the Clubhouse hosts Bruce Levine and Ryan Porth in for David Haugh, talk with former Cubs and Angels manager Joe Maddon about his interest in returning to manage and his new book coming out, The Book of Joe: Trying Not to Suck at Baseball and Life.
The Los Angeles Angels were swept by the Cleveland Guardians on Wednesday, and another losing season is in the books. Then, we take a look at the news about Andrew Velazquez's knee injury and discuss the decision to bat exclusively right-handed. How have the results been so far? We'll share our thoughts and if it adds value to Squid's place on the roster! Plus, we pull our best Marvel and discuss 3 "What If?" scenarios! What if Taylor Ward hadn't gotten hurt? What if Anthony Rendon played a full season? What if Joe Maddon stayed the manager? We'll discuss each and how it might've changed the Angels' season! GET IN OUR VOICEMAIL! Always a great interview, he explains how much pain he was in this season, why he joined social media and shares his thoughts on MLB's new rules from a player's perspective. Today we're taking a look at playoff standings and figuring out the new playoff format once and for all. We're talking about teams on the bubble in the NL and Joey thinks you cannot count the Padres in. We get into baseball nerd discussion and admit that if you're watching as much baseball as us you have to be a nerd; it's just about being a self-aware nerd. We have some new MLB rules as it pertains to pitch-clock and shifting and we're diving into how this will affect the game next year and in the coming years. We also can't forget about the implementation of bigger bases which is huge for fans of base-stealing. Joe Maddon had some bitter comments about analytics making the game unwatchable so we're playing the audio and trying to figure out where he's coming from. Manny fucking Machado has been one of the best hitters in baseball since he reminded the world that he's Manny fucking Machado, but Juan Soto is in the midst of the worst slump of his career. Pujols hit TWO more home runs since the last episode which puts his total at 697; passing ARod and getting himself three away from 700. The Mariners and Braves played what might be the game of the year and we're playing audio from the electric Mariners broadcast team. Mike Trout has hit six home runs in his last six games and might be on the cusp of making major league history. Derek Jeter threw a ball for his first pitch appearance and also stood in front of the mound which many are saying is very insulting. Jared needs to go to the doctor. Enjoy! This week on Peanuts and Popcorn, new rule changes are in store for 2023, we'll break down their possible impact. Joe Maddon goes public on the problem with analytics. A union for minor league players is recognized and Jerry Seinfeld blames Timmy the Trumpet for the Mets collapse. Tony La Russa may be back in the manager's chair sooner rather than later and Pat Hughes and Jose Cardenal are inducted into the Cubs Hall of Fame. Finally, in our popcorn discussion at the 42:56 mark, we talk about the Luc Besson film, Leon the Professional. Next Week: Diner
The Los Angeles Angels couldn't tame the Detroit Tigers for the sweep on Wednesday, thanks to a good ol' fashioned buttercup from Jose Quijada, who gave up two home runs in 2/3rds of an inning. Mike Trout homered for the fourth straight game, and Shohei Ohtani and Matt Thaiss also homered. Patrick Sandoval wasn't quite as effective, but the daytime heat certainly impacted his outing. We'll cover the finale in segment 1! Then, we ask the question: has Matt Wise been a good pitching coach this season? We dive into the numbers and discuss who's responsible for the success of our pitching this year. Plus, Joe Maddon spoke to The Athletic this week and had much to share about his experience with the Angels, working with GM Perry Minasian, and how analytics impacted his ability to manage. In Episode 239, Jeffrey and Craig absolutely do not chat about Chris Pine and then discuss five mostly baseball topics.1. Because We're a Mets Podcast: But this is mostly a Braves segment as they have chased down the Mets in the East.2. This is Boland: Bo Bichette crushes the Orioles for three straight games, and the AL East rivals (?) are getting testy. 3. Minor Threat: The MLBPA has gotten 50% +1 cards from the minor leagues and have asked for voluntary recognition. Oh, they also joined the AFL-CIO4. Around the Horn: How many home runs will Judge hit, how many scoreless innings will Gallen throw, and how many minutes is this Joe Maddon rant from Craig?5. What do the Dodgers do after they clinch everything? Why haven't the Yankees started Oswald Peraza every day? Also, the crew discusses The Athletic's interview Joe Maddon, as he sounded off on how front offices handle analytics. Then over to the Jays and the bench clearing brawl in Baltimore plus the moves today with White sent down while Moreno and Pop called up. Later (29:00) we head to Baltimore and join Dan Shulman ahead of tonight's game. Dan goes through the renewed rivalry with the Orioles and then looks ahead to how the Jays will set up their staff for the stretch run. Finally, Judge hits #55 and Joe Maddon takes a shot at "too many analytics" in a recent interview. Dan Bernstein and Laurence Holmes discussed Cubs manager David Ross recently telling them about his passion for pitching and why the team is in good hands if it's focused on pitching development.
In the final hour, Dan Bernstein and Laurence Holmes were joined by Russell Dorsey -- MLB Insider for Bally Sports and Stadium and analyst for Friday Night Baseball on Apple TV+ -- to discuss the resurgence of the White Sox during manager Tony La Russa's health-related absence, the struggles of the Yankees and Mets, and more of the latest MLB storylines. The guys then reacted to where Bears quarterback Justin Fields ranked on an absurd ranking of NFL QBs. Later, Bernstein and Holmes listened to Sky guard Kahleah Copper give a hilarious interview during the team's 104-80 loss in Game 4 of their semi-final series against the Sun.
It has been a few months since Joe Maddon and the Angels parted ways. He's had some time to think about the sport, the role of the manager and a lot more and he brought those thoughts to Starkville. Our favorite baseball analyst of all time, Rex Hudler, stops by before heading to the South Side. He's an incredible storyteller and didn't disappoint, discussing the time Joe Maddon forced him to read a book, his disgust with the White Sox's lack of hustle, the size of Bo Jackson's penis and his deep analysis of Danny's first pitch at Wrigley Field.
Los Angeles Angels can't hold the lead in extra innings against the Tampa Bay Rays, as they drop game 3 of the series 4-3. Mike Trout homered and placed himself in the Halo history books, tieing Garret Anderson for most runs scored in franchise history. Mike Mayers was good through 5 innings against Shane McClanahan, but the Angels lose on a walk-off error. We'll break down the game for you with highlights and lowlights! Then, would you have rather seen Ray Montgomery or Phil Nevin take over as the Interim Manager of the Angels? Jon and Mike share their thoughts on why Montgomery was not chosen to take over once Joe Maddon was let go. Plus, Mike Scioscia spoke to CBS Sports LA about Mike Trout, Shohei Ohtani, and the potential sale of the team. We'll share our thoughts on his comments and ask a very important question regarding Scioscia and the Angels future! Would you want to see him come back? GET IN OUR VOICEMAIL! The Los Angeles Angels had a fairly uneventful loss to the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday night, dropping the first of a four-game set 2-1. Tucker Davidson was not quite as sharp as last week's start, and Mike Trout mustered the only RBI for the Halos. We take a look at the positive takeaways as we struggle to get through the rest of this season together! Then, former Angels manager Joe Maddon spoke with the Tampa Bay Times about the issues within the Angels organization and spoke to some of the team's deficiencies and struggles over the few years. We've got Maddon's comments and share our thoughts on what he had to say in segment 2. Plus, have we seen the best of Shohei Ohtani, or will he continue to amaze us in the coming years? Today's word of the day is ‘boiling point' as in the temperature in which water boils as in the steam is coming out of your ears as in an eruption of anger is right there as in the New York Yankees still have major issues. Yea, they finally got a win on Sunday, but the team is 10-20 in post-ASB. The pitching has stunk. The batting has stunk. Aaron Boone had a FIERY press conference. What happened? (13:40) Joe Maddon has had enough. He went off about what's going on in baseball. He was fired by the Los Angeles Angels and the team is still a disaster. What did he have to say? (23:10) Review: Under the Banner of Heaven. (31:10) So You Wanna Talk To Samson!? Someone asked me about Dana White's comments saying he had a deal in place to get Tom Brady and Gronk to Vegas and Jon Gruden shut it down. Hmm. (38:20) NPPOD. (40:20) Marcell Azuna has found himself in more legal trouble. Ozuna was arrested for a DUI and the footage is not good. He was booed by fans. He has past problems with domestic violence. In this week's episode, the boys discuss the long awaited Al Avila and Chris Woodward firings. What does the future look like for both the Tigers and Rangers now? Fernando Tatis Jr. tested positive for PEDs this past week, and got his spanking from the league. An 80-game suspension. The boys explain the young star's immaturity and what could happen to him if this current Padres squad proves to be successful without him. Aaron Judge sits at 46 homer runs on the year. If he knocks 62, will he be the real HR king? The game surely needs him to be. The boys give their thoughts. Following this, Michael breaks down episode 5 of Derek Jeter's doc 'The Captain'. And afterwards, the boys make their picks on who they feel are the top team duos this season. They round out the show with Fantasy Factory and Collection Corner.
How many times in your life have you heard the phrase, “Stay positive”? After a screw-up… After a loss… After a breakup… It's an innocent, well-meaning little phrase that's tougher to accept than most people want to admit. To be honest, the LAST thing I want to do is “stay positive” when I'm feeling like crap. So, what's the answer? Mindset expert and 2016 World Series Champion, Joshua Lifrak, shares his answer today on the Coming Up Clutch with J.R.™ show. In this latest episode, Josh and I talk about… The shift the Chicago Cubs players made that led to them winning the 2016 World Series What continues to give the highest level athletes and executes a competitive edge Why going straight from negative thinking to positive thinking is NOT the answer …and so much more. Then, a venting session on the dumpster fire that is the Angels season with a strong start, 14-game losing streak, firing of Joe Maddon, and big brawl with the Mariners that made things worse.

Today's word of the day is ‘copy/paste' as in no edits as in no fixes as in PR has sent a message and you just send it out to the masses as in Jack Del Rio the DC for the Commanders had to copy/paste his apology. What did he do? He had some comments on protests and the January 6th insurrection. One side he said was riots! The Capitol storming was a ‘dust-up'. Ron Rivera didn't care. Some players didn't care. But everyone else sure did enough for the team to make him apologize. (18:55) The FBI did nothing to protect hundreds of gymnasts around the country when Larry Nassar was running wild. Today's word of the day is ‘66' as in 66 massage therapists as in a report came out yesterday that Deshaun Watson used 66 massage therapists in a 17-month window while with the Houston Texans. There have been 24 civil suits against Watson. More details allege that the Texans may have helped set up some of these meetings. The NFL better start doing real work now to figure out what is right. Deshaun Watson's future in the NFL should very much be in doubt (although it should have been before). (22:55) Review: Unknown. (27:35) Joe Maddon was fired as the manager of the Angels. They had lost 12-straight games. Mike Trout couldn't get a hit. Shohei Ohtani couldn't hit. They went from first to 10 games back in the AL West. (35:10) It looks like another manager could be on the hot hot hot seat. Don Mattingly. The Miami Marlins held a 90-minute team meeting before its 12-2 win over the Nationals. The team is underachieving. The team has some issues in the clubhouse. And they cannot blame me anymore! (43:55) NPPOD. (46:00) The Denver Broncos are being sold to Walmart for $4.65B. That's a nice chunk of change. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
