He's back with NBC for Sunday Night Baseball and was just over at Truist Park a couple of weeks ago for the Braves & Guardians. He's as good a storyteller as there is...so sit back and enjoy an incredible sports conversation with the legendary Bob Costas. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
He's called games from baseball diamonds to basketball courts, from college campuses to the biggest stages in sports. Our guest today knows what it sounds like when history happens — because he was the one describing it. "Coney Island" Dave Cohen spent three decades as a freelance play-by-play voice for ESPN, debuting on the network all the way back in 1979, when sports on cable was still finding its legs. He was an innovator in sports cable programming and was instrumental in the beginnings of all-sports radio in New York. As the TV play-by-play voice of the New York Yankees on MSG Network, he won an Emmy Award in 1996 for his call of a Dwight Gooden no-hitter. A lifelong friend of Bob Costas, he also served as announcer on Costas Coast to Coast — and if that weren't enough, he's taken his voice to Hollywood, appearing in films like Glory Road and Trouble with the Curve. In this episode Dave reflects on the ;legacy of great broadcasters who graduated fron his alma mater, Syracuse University. He also talks sports television, the new college sports landscape and much, much more. This is Dave's third appearance on SATB and when you listen, you'll know why.

Texas flirting with the idea of annexing parts of eastern New Mexico sounds like political fan fiction until you read the emails we're getting from people who live there. We start with a mailbag that's raw, specific, and honestly hard to dismiss: resentment over oil money, frustration with Santa Fe, and the nagging question of why turnout still lags in the places that feel the most ignored. If you care about New Mexico voter turnout, oil and gas politics, gerrymandering, and representation, this opening segment hits home. Then we jump into the 2026 governor landscape and the messaging wars already heating up. We talk about the debate moment where Duke Rodriguez went after journalist Jessica Garate, why that kind of undisciplined shot backfires, and what candidates forget about primaries: the rooms are skeptical, the traps are real, and you cannot waste attention fighting the wrong battle. From there we break down a new “Accountable New Mexico” attack ad aimed at Deb Haaland over Epstein related allegations, what the ad seems designed to do, and how polling shifts when voters hear the claim. We also explain why Sam Bregman's path is harder than it looks in a Democratic primary. The back half gets bigger and messier in the way real life is. A text from our daughter Ava sparks a conversation about Iran war coverage, Trump's communication style, Marco Rubio's argument for the strike, and Pete Hegseth's case for strategic unpredictability. We connect that to Trump approval ratings, GOP House retirements, and what the numbers suggest for the 2026 midterm elections. And yes, we also hit the headline whiplash: the Kristi Noem scandal and why personal vulnerabilities can become security risks, Danny Hurley's faith after a March Madness dagger, and Bob Costas defending common sense protections for women's sports. If you like fast, honest analysis that moves from New Mexico politics to national stakes without treating you like a slogan, you'll feel at home here. Jaden Ivey is no longer a Chicago Bull, because he spoke out against the NBA's "Pride Month" promotions. But is is really that simple? Also, we talk about Bob Costas giving CNN more than they bargained for in a conversation about the Olympic trans-ban, $900 car payments, and more!
In part two of Red Eye Radio with Gary McNamara and Eric Harley, Legendary sportscaster Bob Costas praised the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) policy change this week banning transgender athletes from competing in women's sports, saying, "Common sense is not transphobic." Costas, the longtime voice of the Olympics, addressed the groundbreaking policy change during an appearance on CNN this week. Also Jimmy Kimmel back-steps his comments on Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullen being a former plumber, the left downplaying the American worker with "blue collar" trades and war game simulations on the Iranian war. For more talk on the issues that matter to you, listen on radio stations across America Monday-Friday 12am-5am CT (1am-6am ET and 10pm-3am PT), download the RED EYE RADIO SHOW app, asking your smart speaker, or listening at RedEyeRadioShow.com. We Are Back! Opening Day is here, and so is the best Black baseball highlights and news recap in the game. Before we get too far, please consider a paid subscription to this platform. It's the best way to support the Mixtape and keep the community growing. As of this morning, twelve MLB regular-season games have been played, and we've learned a few things. The Dodgers are on pace to go 162-0 (again). The quest for a three-peat is on. And Dodgers' skipper Dave Roberts says the 2026 team is his best roster. It's hard to think Mookie Betts is on a revenge tour, but the 2025 Gold Glove finalist is hoping to bounce back from a down year. He is fully recovered from a stomach virus that really hampered the start of his 2025 season. He went 1-4 last night in a game shown on NBC, called by the legend Bob Costas. The Nats surprised the Cubs, beating them 10-4. The story of the game will center on CJ Abrams. The 2024 All-Star crushed a bases-loaded sure double, but got thrown out as he thought the ball was a sure home run, and it was not. He got thrown out at second, and that is really a microcosm of Abrams right now. Let's hope ‘26 brings more on-field maturity, because I think he is going to have a breakthrough year.Victor Scott II stole two bases in the Cards come-from-behind victory against the Rays. Mike Trout hit his fifth Opening Day homer to lead the Angels over the Astros. Tarik Skubal struck out six Padres in six innings for the Tigers 8-2 win. The Yankees, Mets, Phillies, Brewers, Red Sox, Guardians, and even the O's also picked up impressive Opening Day wins. And Tommy Pham signed a minor league contract with the Mets.See you tomorrow.
