In this episode of Discover Lafayette, we honor the 25th anniversary of Miles Perret Cancer Services, a nonprofit that has supported more than 27,000 families in Acadiana over the years facing the challenges of a cancer diagnosis. Joining us are Executive Director, Tim Rinaldi and Community Liaison, Sherry Hernandez, two passionate leaders dedicated to advancing the mission and heart of this vital organization. The organization was founded in honor of Miles Perret who tragically died at the age of eight years of age in 2001 from glioblastoma. From this experience, his parents, Hank and Debbie Verret, had the vision to help others in Acadiana fight, survive and live with cancer with dignity and to have access to the services they may need. Miles's legacy lives on through a mission of compassion. The organization provides 100% free support services—from wigs and nutritional supplements to transportation assistance and wellness programs—without income restrictions. Tim Rinaldi shares his deeply personal journey to leading Miles Perret—rooted in his family's long-standing ties to oncology care—and how faith, entrepreneurship, and a calling to serve intersected to bring him home to Acadiana. He offers insight into the organization's commitment to both strategic impact and compassionate care, and how building a sustainable, team-driven culture remains central to his vision. Sherry Hernandez, who has served with the organization for eight years, reflects on the full-circle moment that led her from for-profit public relations to her role at Miles Perret. Her lifelong passion for community engagement and her personal experiences with cancer have fueled her dedication to connecting families with resources—at no cost and with no income verification required. Listeners will learn about the many services offered by Miles Perret, including nutritional supplements, wigs, medical supplies, transportation assistance, and a growing wellness program that includes yoga, Pilates, circuit training, and soon, a teaching kitchen. All services are 100% free to cancer patients and their families. We also explore the Games of Acadiana, the nonprofit's largest and most iconic fundraiser, now celebrating its 25th year. What began as a friendly competition among the Perret brothers as they looked at how to honor Miles' legacy, has evolved into a beloved tradition, including a Birthday Bash Kickoff on Saturday, May 31, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., behind the Bayou Church, followed by a two-week virtual scavenger hunt through the GooseChase app. Participants can complete missions for a chance to win prizes, including a $10,000 grand prize, all while raising awareness and support for the organization. The green space along Settler's Trace Boulevard (behind the Bayou Church) will be transformed into a hub of excitement with fun games, engaging activities, and interactive attractions including an obstacle course, inflatable mini golf, and a monster fun jump. Cancer survivors will be honored with an inspiring Survivor Walk and the crowd will celebrate together with a delicious birthday cupcake. Other key topics include: The founding story of Miles Perret, named after Hank and Debbies's son whose legacy lives on in every service offered The organization's decision to forgo government funding to remain nimble and community-focused The importance of monthly recurring donations and employer-based giving programs Plans for a new facility and expanded wellness services, including a chapel and increased access to nutritional support Whether you've participated in the Games of Acadiana, supported the Camellia Crossing Glow Run, or are learning about Miles Perret for the first time, this episode highlights how deeply rooted the organization is in the fabric of Acadiana—and how each of us can play a role in their mission of neighbors helping neighbors. To get involved, donate, volunteer,

It's Acadiana: Out to Lunch

Running a nonprofit might sound like a mission of the heart. But it’s also very much a business. These organizations have to pay staff, keep the lights on, and provide services. Yes, they rely on philanthropy. But they also need to generate revenue, build partnerships, and constantly make the case for their value—not just to donors, but to the community at large. Acadiana has hundreds of nonprofits big and small. And to some extent they compete just like for-profit enterprises. There’s only so much money and attention in the world, even for a good cause. And what better cause is there than kids? Lore Linton is the Executive Director of the Children’s Museum of Acadiana, a nonprofit that blends play and learning for kids and their families. Lore has a long history with the museum, starting as a volunteer and working her way through nearly every role. She became Executive Director in 2023 and has since expanded programming, grown attendance, and taken on the everyday challenges of operating a museum inside a 100-year-old building. While half of CMA’s revenue comes from admissions and events like birthday parties, the other half comes from donations, grants, and sponsorships—the nonprofit hustle. Annie Spell has seen nonprofits from the other side of the ledger. A psychologist by training , Annie is also a longtime donor and board member of organizations like the American Cancer Society, Hearts of Hope, Miles Perret Cancer Services, and the Children’s Museum of Acadiana itself. Annie says she grew up in a family that modeled community involvement—her grandfathers included both a longtime judge and entrepreneur. Annie ran a small, focused clinical practice working with adolescents, and did pro bono work for children in the court system. In 2025, she was elected unopposed to the Louisiana Legislature. A major vehicle for Annie's philanthropy is the Tides Medical Foundation, a fund associated with the biomedical firm founded by her husband. Out to Lunch Acadiana was recorded live over lunch at Tsunami Sushi in downtown Lafayette. Miles Perret Cancer Services' Executive Director, Richard Stegall, and Sherry Hernandez, Community Liaison, spoke with Jan Swift of Discover Lafayette about the 19th Annual Games of Acadiana which will be held on August 17, 2019. This annual fun and family-friendly event was created in the aftermath of the tragic loss of Hank and Debbie Perret's son, Miles Perret, to glioblastoma. Their vision then and now was to help others in Acadiana fight, survive and live with cancer with dignity and to have access to the services they may need. Although Miles Perret lived only eight years, his was a life filled with curiosity, joy, and love. When Miles was diagnosed with cancer in 1995, his family determined right away that he would have as normal and carefree a life as possible. Their journey with him provided firsthand experience of the daily challenges of fighting cancer. Miles, unfortunately, lost his battle with cancer at the age in 1996. A few years later, the Perret family started Games of Acadiana, a family-oriented fundraising event, first held August 25, 2001. The amazing success of the first Game Day enabled the Miles Perret Center to open less than a year later to help address the needs of local families. Games of Acadiana is still the signature fundraiser of Miles Perret Cancer Services today, with approximately 100 sponsors making this free event possible. The Games are held as a tribute and way to say thanks to the community, the many volunteers that make Miles Perret's services possible, as well as the survivors who have bravely faced cancer. While the games are free, you can contribute to Miles Perret Cancer Services by buying a GPS wristband that gives you an exclusive look inside a few games at the event. Come "Play With a Purpose" and help our community fight cancer by supporting this worthy cause. You can also contribute by sponsoring the Games or giving through "I'm In" with any level of gift you wish. Visit www.milesperret.org for more information. Since 2002, Miles Perret Cancer Services has served over 16,000 families in Acadiana. In 2018 alone, 3400 families were helped. 100% of the funds raised stay in Acadiana. Parishes in their service area include Acadia, Avoyelles, Evangeline, Iberia, Jeff Davis, Lafayette, St. Landry, St. Martin, St. Mary and Vermilion. They offer 25 services and programs to the community, including prostheses, wigs, nutritional supplements, transportation assistance, a variety of medical supplies and equipment, a Wellness Center offering exercise and nutrition classes, and support groups. The staff works closely with local oncologists and hospitals to ensure that their services meet the needs of their clients. Mobile Miles offers outreach services to clients living in the parishes outside of Lafayette to coordinate delivery of needed items and services. The day begins early with a triathlon suitable for all fitness levels for the first 350 who sign up: there is a 200-yard swim at UL-Bourgeois pool, and an 8-mile bike ride and 2-mile run along Cajundome Blvd. Visit https://runsignup.com/Race/LA/Lafayette/MPCSTriathlon for details and to sign up. Games of Acadiana starts at 10 a.m. with the Survivor Walk and Opening Ceremonies. At 10:30 a.m., the games officially begin. This year’s Games of Acadiana features over 50 games to be enjoyed by the whole family. There will be a toddler play area with a place to valet park strollers. Activities include life-sized Candyland, Home Run Derby, Hula Hoop, Monster Spider Jump, Zombie Laser Tag, and the Fastest Pitch game hosted by Rader Solutions, our podcast producer. Sherry's favorite games include Wipeout and Monster Spider Jump, which she enjoys testing out! Please also check out the Miles Perret signature $6.00 spaghetti dish, $1.00 bake sale cookies, and Milesy Mart items for sale which may be purchased onsite with all proceeds going to benefit the center. Entrepreneurs Clare Cook and Dr. Robert Autin Collaborate to Enhance Cultural Landscape of Lafayette  Friends since Pre-K, the husband and wife team of Clare Cook and Dr. Robert Autin provide an inspirational take on how a deep passion for arts and science can positively impact a community. In this podcast interview with Jan Swift, host of Discover Lafayette, this highly-disciplined couple share their captivating journey which eventually brought them back to their beloved hometown, Lafayette LA. Robert Autin always wanted to be a doctor and assumed he would follow in the steps of his late father, Dr. David Autin, who was a urologist. Instead, Robert followed a more arduous path of specializing in Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery, along with General Surgery. He ended up at New York Methodist in Brooklyn NY for a five year residency in surgery. Clare Cook, Robert's lifelong friend, was also successfully pursuing a career path as a dancer, choreographer and teacher, after receiving her Master of Fine Arts from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. In 2011, she launched Clare Cook Dance Theater and produced multidisciplinary dance theater projects and educational workshops to nurture youth creativity. Most noteworthy, Clare had the opportunity to work with Susan Stroman, a Tony winning choreographer, working on Woody Allen's Bullets over Broadway. Her career was definitely on an upward trajectory. While Clare and Robert had dated in college, both had moved on as they pursued higher education. Year passed, and both ended up in New York where they reconnected. Married in February 2014, they returned home to Lafayette when Robert joined the medical practice of Drs. Philip Gachassin and Dennis Eschete. As Clare wound up commitments with her work in New York, she pondered how she could positively add to the local arts community in Lafayette. The result was the establishment of Basin Arts, located at 113 Clinton St. in downtown Lafayette, which offers dance and art classes, free visual arts programming, and genre-bending special events. Basin Arts is also the home to a professional company-in-residence, Basin Dance Collective, and the newly established art rental program, BARE Walls, which establishes relationships between local artists and businesses and provides residual income to artists every time their work is displayed. The name Basin Arts was coined by Robert, and refers to "a collective that allows things to pass through." As its website states and Clare affirms, "Basin Arts is a container for creativity that supports and implements cross-disciplinary collaboration, allowing Lafayette’s creative class to come together, share, experiment, and focus on process over product." For more information, please visit https://basinartslafayette.com. Clare is also involved as a teacher in the community and she developed a curriculum, Movement & Mindfulness, for a year-long teaching residency at Myrtle Place Elementary School. She has led dance classes at Miles Perret Cancer Services for cancer survivors, worked with the elderly population at The Blake, and designed movement workshops with Acadiana C.A.R.E.S., Big Brothers-Big Sisters, AOC Community Media and GEAR Up through the Acadiana Center for the Arts. Clare is not the only artist in the family. Robert is owner of Acadian Superette located at 600 Lamar Street in the Freetown neighborhood of Lafayette. A local favorite for hearty meals, the restaurant is beloved for its home smoked meats, homemade bacon, and good old fashioned plate lunches. Robert is a hands-on owner: he personally brines and smokes the meats and drives (at times) to the Eunice Superette where he sources the meats. He built the Superette's smokehouse. To get a feel for how much he enjoys cooking, check out a few of Robert's videos on Acadian Superette's Facebook page where he illustrates how he makes boudin, BLT and Reuben sandwiches, and tempts you with his smoked pancetta,
