JJ Wetherholt is on pace for a better rookie season than Albert Pujols in 2001. He's got the best June of his career, he's 7th in fWAR among all position players, and he's a legitimate MVP candidate. C70 joins us to talk about what that means.Masyn Winn is showing signs of life, Nathan Church looks like a different hitter since coming back, Blaze Jordan has already eclipsed Gorman's season production, and the bullpen is falling apart. Plus: the Home Run Derby is changing formats again, Quinn Matthews might be close, and we close with You Income You Lose Some — guessing career earnings of Cardinals legends.Have a question or comment for the show? Could Shohei Ohtani's blister become a serious problem as he chases one of the most historic seasons in baseball history? This week, Hall of Famer John Smoltz joins the show to discuss the growing concern surrounding Shohei Ohtani's blister issue and how difficult it can be for pitchers to perform through finger injuries. After allowing just 5 earned runs through his first 10 starts before surrendering 7 in his last two, is the blister to blame or is it something bigger? We also discuss whether there should be any concern surrounding the Atlanta Braves after injuries to both Spencer Strider and Ronald Acuña Jr., the Mariners' unique piggyback pitching strategy, and the latest proposed Home Run Derby rule changes. As we rapidly approach the halfway point of the 2026 baseball season, some interesting trends are starting to become more apparent across Major League Baseball. One of the more jarring statistics is the difference in success between teams in the American and National Leagues. While NL teams seem to be having more success, is there a bigger issue at play for teams in the AL? On this episode of Baseball Bar-B-Cast, Jake Mintz and Jordan Shusterman try to make sense of why the vast majority of teams in the American League aren't having great seasons. While 10 teams in the NL have records above .500, only five teams in the AL are above that mark. Additionally, only the New York Yankees, Tampa Bay Rays and Cleveland Guardians have reached the 40-win mark. Could it be the amount teams are spending on payroll, or is competition within the AL divisions simply tighter? Later, Jake and Jordan discuss the latest developments in the MLB and MLBPA negotiations over a new CBA, which could feature radical changes to how teams draft eligible players and what those changes could mean for the college baseball landscape. The guys then get into the new format change for the 2026 Home Run Derby, which some fans might not be thrilled about, before making their picks for this week's edition of The Good, The Bad & The Uggla. 1:34 – The Opener: What's wrong with the AL? 23:17 – Around The League: Latest in CBA negotiations 53:40 – We Need To Talk About: HR Derby changes 57:16 – The Good 1:04:01 – The Bad 1:07:58 – The Uggla Subscribe to Baseball Bar-B-Cast on your favorite podcast app:
It's a stacked sports day at the Korner Booth Podcast! New York City came to a standstill as the Knicks celebrated their first NBA championship in 53 years with a massive ticker-tape parade. An estimated 2 million fans lined Broadway from Battery Park to City Hall, where Finals MVP Jalen Brunson was serenaded with chants, and Mayor Zohran Mamdani presented the team with the Keys to the City. The parade closed out a Finals run that saw the Knicks beat the Spurs in five games behind one of the best title-stage performances in recent memory from Brunson, capping a Finals series that averaged more than 20 million viewers, the most-watched NBA postseason since 1998. We break down the best moments from the celebration, Brunson's incredible run, and what this title means for a Knicks fanbase that's waited over half a century for this moment. Then we head to the gridiron for the 2026 UFL United Bowl, where the Louisville Kings pulled off one of the most remarkable championship runs in recent sports history. In their first-ever season as a franchise, the Kings knocked off the defending champion DC Defenders 27-20 at Audi Field, completing a perfect season sweep of DC. Running back Ian Wheeler was named United Bowl MVP after rushing for 81 yards and the go-ahead touchdown, while Louisville's defense forced a key fumble and held the Defenders to just four points in the second half. The win is even sweeter considering the Kings started the season 0-3 before rattling off a championship-or-bust turnaround. We break down how a brand-new franchise pulled off the title run in year one. We're also bringing you a Week 2 update from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, brought to you by Belly Up Sports' "Summer of Soccer." Group play has delivered drama all over North America with co-host Canada thrashing Qatar 6-0 to take control of Group B, while Switzerland bounced back from a slow start with a dominant win of their own. In Group A, Mexico sits perfect through two matches as the co-hosts push for a deep run, while South Africa and Czechia battled to a dramatic late draw. Elsewhere, the US continues group play against Australia, and Brazil looks to stay unbeaten against Haiti. We run through the standings, the biggest storylines, and which teams are trending toward the knockout rounds as the group stage heats up. And finally, breaking news out of MLB: the Home Run Derby is getting a major facelift for 2026. After a decade of using a pitch clock, MLB is scrapping the timer and going back to an outs-based, swing-driven format at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. Hitters will get 20 swings in Round 1 and 15 in each of the final two rounds, with any home run on a hitter's final swing earning them another swing, meaning a hot streak can keep the round alive indefinitely. The move comes after players like Bryce Harper raised concerns about fatigue and injury risk under the old timed format. We get into what the new rules mean for this year's Derby and which sluggers stand to benefit most. #Knicks #NBAFinals #NBAChampions #JalenBrunson #CanyonOfHeroes #UFL #LouisvilleKings #UnitedBowl #DCDefenders #FIFAWorldCup2026 #WorldCup2026 #BellyUpSports #SummerOfSoccer #MLB #HomeRunDerby #Phillies #NYKnicks #SportsNews #KornerBoothPodcast

When the San Francisco Giants ended the 2025 season, they found themselves at exactly .500 in the ultra-competitive NL West. After acquiring All-Star Rafael Devers during the season and making a few additions in the offseason, there was hope that the Giants would be pushing for a postseason spot in 2026. That plan, however, has not yet taken off, and things are reportedly set to change by the Bay. On this episode of Baseball Bar-B-Cast, Jake Mintz and Jordan Shusterman discuss reports that President of Baseball Operations Buster Posey is set to trade away key players before the August 3 trade deadline. The surprising move suggests that the Giants may not believe this is the year for them to compete and that a reset is necessary after falling to a disappointing 29-43 record to this point in the season. The question now is: Which players are going to be moved in potential trades? Later, Jake and Jordan dream up who they would like to see in the 2026 MLB Home Run Derby, set to take place in Philadelphia next month. While there are a few obvious choices—Kyle Schwarber and Ben Rice, most notably—the guys also hope that Mike Trout could have a special moment and compete in his first-ever Derby in front of a hometown crowd. They then discuss a few key players returning from injury, the Washington Nationals' surprising success and take a look at the current manager ejection standings. 1:40 – The Opener: Giants fire sale 26:13 – Dream Home Run Derby field 52:04 – Around the League: Key returning players 56:26 – Nationals are having success 1:01:36 – Manager ejection standings Subscribe to Baseball Bar-B-Cast on your favorite podcast app:

Chuck Garfien sits down with Japan-based reporter Yuri Karasawa of JapanBall and WorldBaseball.com to get a firsthand look at “Murakami Mania” from overseas. They dive into the reaction across Japan, whether White Sox gear is popping up more, and if even seasoned observers are surprised by Murakami leading the league in home runs. Yuri also weighs in on his current pace; early expectations, including Shingo Takatsu's bold 55-HR prediction; and how Murakami has exceeded them so far. The conversation shifts to what's next, from Home Run Derby buzz to concerns in Japan about a potential midseason trade and what that means for fans hoping to see him in Chicago. Chuck and Yuri also revisit offseason skepticism about Murakami handling MLB velocity, break down his unique stat line with no doubles and all home runs, and touch on his speed, defense, and overall profile from his NPB days. They wrap with insight into how Japanese fans follow MLB despite the time difference and a quick check-in on Anthony Kay's start to the season.
