Andrew McAfee of MIT's Sloan School of Management talks about his book, More from Less, with EconTalk host Russ Roberts. McAfee argues that technology is helping developed nations use fewer resources in producing higher levels of economic output. The improvement is not just a reduction in energy per dollar of GDP but less energy in total as economic growth progresses. This "dematerialization" portends a future that was unimaginable to the economists and pundits of the past. McAfee discusses the potential for dealing with climate change in a dematerialized world, the non-material aspects of economic progress, and the political repercussions of the current distribution of economic progress.

Today I'm speaking with Megan Flynn of M. Flynn in Boston's beautiful South End neighborhood. Megan and her sister Moria started their jewelry business over 10 years ago and opened their brick and mortar shop in 2009. They're old hat at this point and have seen their business through some major changes and iterations. Megan's background includes a Master of Science from Northwestern and a gemology degree from GIA while Moria boasts an MBA from MIT's Sloan School of Management. Both sisters were clearly on their way to huge things, but as they wrapped up their formal education the sisters both felt a definitive pull towards entrepreneurship. They followed this pull right into a long-term career in brick and mortar business ownership. Megan and I talk about the ups and downs of working with a sibling, reevaluating your business each and every January and being flexible with your customers while still maintaining boundaries. We go deep about using Moria's MBA to their advantage and where it helps them and where it just doesn't apply when running a brick and mortar. I loved this part, because like a lot of you, I don't have a business background and I always wonder if having a more formal experience would help in running my business. I'm excited for you to all hear this episode for all the above reasons, but mostly because, like me, you're going to get fired up by Megan's dedication to growing not only her brick and mortar but the community in which it operates. Enjoy the show. Find more from M.Flynn http://mflynnjewelry.com/ Instagram: @mflynnjewelry Facebook: @mflynnjewelry Thanks again for listening. If you like what you're hearing please do let me know.
