In this episode, Dots Oyebolu speaks with David Meerman Scott, Marketing Strategist and Bestselling Author of “Fanocracy: Turning Fans into Customers and Customers into Fans.”David explores the neuroscience behind fandom and the power of customer-centric marketing, sharing how marketers can create enduring value by prioritizing connection over conversion. Key Takeaways:(01:34) Transitioning from Wall Street to bestselling marketing author.(03:04) Most marketers mistakenly focus on products instead of buyer personas' needs.(05:51) B2B marketers often lose sight of the human element by targeting businesses instead of individuals.(10:10) Hagerty builds a tribe around classic car lovers with over a million YouTube subscribers.(13:58) HubSpot exemplifies fan-building by offering extensive free education before a sales pitch.(14:38) HubSpot's Inbound conference attracts massive audiences and showcases how offering value without strings can create loyal brand advocates.(17:12) Unlike ads, content like blog posts lives forever and compounds as an asset. (22:13) One-star reviews can reflect unrelated experiences, like delivery issues, and marketers should avoid overreacting to isolated negative feedback.(29:25) The best marketing strategy is grounded in human connection — authenticity drives fan-building more than constant messaging or automation ever could.Resources Mentioned:David Meerman Scotthttps://www.linkedin.com/in/davidmeermanscott/HubSpot Academyhttps://academy.hubspot.comInbound by HubSpothttps://www.inbound.com“The New Rules of Marketing and PR”https://www.davidmeermanscott.com/books/the-new-rules-of-marketing-and-pr“Marketing Lessons from the Grateful Dead”https://www.davidmeermanscott.com/books/marketing-lessons-from-the-grateful-deadInsightful Links:https://www.socialmediaexaminer.com/developing-loyal-fans-future-marketing-david-meerman-scott/https://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/how-to-turn-customers-into-fanshttps://www.hotjar.com/blog/customer-centric-marketing/Thanks for listening to the “Marketing Leadership” podcast, brought to you by Listen Network. Marketing visionary David Meerman Scott returns to share his cutting-edge insights into the evolving digital marketing landscape. From being dismissed for his innovative ideas to becoming a global thought leader, David recounts his journey and the immense growth in online engagement that has shaped today's marketing world. With AI, social media, and video now at the forefront, David stresses the importance of keeping human connection alive in our digital interactions.   Storytelling emerges as a powerful tool in marketing, and we discuss how businesses can form genuine bonds with their audiences through impactful content. Drawing on examples like Hagerty Insurance's success with classic car enthusiasts, we highlight the struggle many companies face as they cling to outdated strategies. AI's role in content creation is explored, showcasing how it has transformed tasks like transcription and editing, allowing for efficient production of diverse content without compromising on quality.   We dive into modern tools that streamline content creation, eradicating the "no time" excuse. Leveraging AI models and transcription services, creating high-quality content for web and social media is now faster than ever. We emphasize establishing authority through consistent content production, as AI-based search tools gain traction. The episode wraps up with niche content strategies, revealing how specific themes can capture media interest and unlock unique opportunities amidst rapid technological advancements.  David Meerman Scott spotted the real-time marketing revolution in its infancy and wrote five books about it including The New Rules of Marketing and PR, now in an 8th edition, with more than 425,000 copies sold in English and available in 29 languages from Albanian to Vietnamese.     Now David says the pendulum has swung too far in the direction of superficial online communications. Tech-weary and bot-wary people are hungry for true human connection. Organizations have learned to win by developing what David calls a “Fanocracy” - (the subject of his Wall Street Journal bestseller) - tapping into the mindset that relationships with customers are more important than the products they sell to them.     He is a massive live music fan, having been to 984 live shows since he was 15 years old, is passionate about the Apollo lunar program, and he loves to surf but isn't very good at it.    Quotes:  "In an AI-driven world, maintaining humanity in digital interactions is more crucial than ever."  "Storytelling isn't just about telling tales; it's about forging genuine connections with your audience."  "The excuse of 'no time' for content creation is obsolete with the modern tools we have today."     Links:   David's LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/davidmeermanscott/   Fanocracy - https://www.davidmeermanscott.com/books/fanocracy  The New Rules of Marketing & PR (9th Edition) - https://www.davidmeermanscott.com/books/the-new-rules-of-marketing-and-pr     Get this episode and all other episodes of Sales Lead Dog at https://empellorcrm.com/salesleaddog

Every podcaster shares a common dream: to see their audience grow and their downloads soar. Imagine having a strategy that could be your secret weapon to boost exposure. What if you could use trending news to get noticed? Harness the YouTube algorithm to get a hundred thousand new views?!Enter newsjacking—a technique that could transform your podcast's visibility. Let's explore this strategy further and understand how you can wield it effectively, drawing from my interview with marketing guru David Meerman Scott on episode 56 of Inspired Money.Understanding Newsjacking Newsjacking is the art of injecting your insights into a breaking news story, gaining the media spotlight in the process. Think of it as surfing the wave of public interest that news stories generate. By providing relevant angles or expertise, you capture attention when it matters the most.Historical RootsNewsjacking might sound like a modern buzzword, but its origin dates back to the 1970s in the United Kingdom. David Meerman Scott breathed new life into this concept, notably spotlighting how Donald Trump deftly navigated the 2016 Presidential election cycle, utilizing real-time marketing on Twitter. Scott's predictions based on Trump's tactics underscored newsjacking's power.Key Takeaways from David Meerman Scott In my podcast interview, David generously shared key principles behind smart newsjacking:Speed is Essential: The quicker you respond, the more likely you are to capitalize on the public's interest. The hardest part about leveraging newsjacking is remembering that you need to be quick and agile. You need to have the bandwidth to act in real-time.Create Relevant Content: Seamlessly tie your podcast's themes or your expertise to the news narrative. With newsjacking, you need a legitimate ties to the story. Just responding to any old story doesn't work so well.Strategic Sensitivity: Handle negative news with care to avoid misjudged sentiments. It's easy to get newsjack-happy, but the process is most effective when you're selective. Leverage the stories that are most relevant to your target audience and industry.Maximize Social Media: Leverage platforms for real-time engagement, ensuring your content surges in conversations. My Practical Application: Jane's Addiction Incident My real-world test of newsjacking began a week prior to writing this, with an unexpected and shocking moment during Jane's Addiction's reunion tour — one that left fans stunned and wondering about the future of the band. Perry Farrell's mid-performance physical altercation with Dave Navarro not only ended the band's Boston show early, but it ultimately ended the tour.I saw a perfect newsjacking opportunity. What tied me to the recent event? I had interviewed Etty Lau Farrell, Perry's wife, on the Inspired Money podcast two years ago. During the interview, Perry made a cameo appearance—greeting me by name! Although a video about Jane's addiction did not fit my YouTube channel's content, I decided that diving into the substantial weekend buzz just might win attention for npth my YouTube channel and the Etty Farrell episode. Here's how I did it:Planning: The news broke on Friday teh 13th, and by Sunday night, I had scripted a strategic video plan. This included finding concert footage of the “fight,” performance videos in New York and Boston, and reading fan comments on Reddit.Execution: On Monday, September 16, I recorded and published the video “Jane's Addiction Fight Explained: Perry Farrell Attacks Dave Navarro in...

In July 1969, ninety-four percent of American televisions were tuned to coverage of Apollo 11's mission to the moon. How did space exploration, once the purview of rocket scientists, reach a larger audience than My Three Sons? Why did a government program whose standard operating procedure had been secrecy turn its greatest achievement into a communal experience? In Marketing the Moon, David Meerman Scott and Richard Jurek tell the story of one of the most successful marketing and public relations campaigns in history: the selling of the Apollo program. Primed by science fiction, magazine articles, and appearances by Wernher von Braun on the “Tomorrowland” segments of the Disneyland prime time television show, Americans were a receptive audience for NASA's pioneering “brand journalism.” Scott and Jurek describe sophisticated efforts by NASA and its many contractors to market the facts about space travel—through press releases, bylined articles, lavishly detailed background materials, and fully produced radio and television features—rather than push an agenda. American astronauts, who signed exclusive agreements with Life magazine, became the heroic and patriotic faces of the program. And there was some judicious product placement: Hasselblad was the “first camera on the moon”; Sony cassette recorders and supplies of Tang were on board the capsule; and astronauts were equipped with the Exer-Genie personal exerciser. Everyone wanted a place on the bandwagon. Generously illustrated with vintage photographs, artwork, and advertisements, many never published before, Marketing the Moon shows that when Neil Armstrong took that giant leap for mankind, it was a triumph not just for American engineering and rocketry but for American marketing and public relations. As a leader and a business owner, reputation is your lifeblood. Trust is the social currency of today's digital-first world, and it's in short supply! Which is good news if you're a credible mission-driven entrepreneur or professional, someone who has the runs on the board and who is seen, not as someone with something to sell, but as someone with something to teach. But you need to be intentional about it! As we talk about here often on the podcast, there are many variables involved in building a genuine thought leader brand in the marketplace. Let's be clear: People don't want to be sold something—they want to buy something. And the best way to get someone to seek out the opportunity to buy from you is to position yourself as the unquestionable authority in your space—someone they would be lucky to have a chance to do business with. This is what PR agency owner RUSTY SHELTON calls the authority advantage! Rusty is a Senior Marketing Strategist at Forbes Books, bestselling author and successful entrepreneur. He's the founder and chairman of Zilker Media, an award-winning agency based in Austin, Texas that builds people-driven brands.  As a speaker, Rusty uses humour and targeted examples to challenge assumptions about thought leadership, showing leaders how to build authentic personal brands focused on impact, not ego. He has written three books and spoken around the world to a variety of audiences, from YPO to Harvard Medical to SXSW Interactive. Rusty's newest book, The Authority Advantage: Building Thought Leadership Focused on Impact, Not Ego (ForbesBooks, 2023), which is co-authored with Adam Witty and features a foreword from David Meerman Scott, demonstrates how leaders can make an impact with their personal brand and build trust in an increasingly skeptical world.

Marketing the Moon: The Selling of the Apollo Lunar Program by David Meerman Scott and Richard Jurek About the Book: One of the most successful public relations campaigns in history, featuring heroic astronauts, press-savvy rocket scientists, enthusiastic reporters, deep-pocketed defense contractors, and Tang. Primed by science fiction, magazine articles, and appearances by Wernher von Braun on the “Tomorrowland” segments of the Disneyland prime-time television show, Americans were receptive to NASA's pioneering “brand journalism.” Scott and Jurek describe sophisticated efforts by NASA and its many contractors to market the facts about space travel—through press releases, bylined articles, lavishly detailed background materials, and fully produced radio and television features—rather than push an agenda. American astronauts, who signed exclusive agreements with Life magazine, became the heroic and patriotic faces of the program. And there was some judicious product placement: Hasselblad was the “first camera on the moon”; Sony cassette recorders and supplies of Tang were on board the capsule, and astronauts were equipped with the Exer-Genie personal exerciser. About the Author: David Meerman Scott is a marketing strategist, entrepreneur, international keynote speaker, investor and advisor to emerging companies, and bestselling author of 12 books, including The New Rules of Marketing & PR, Fanocracy, Real-Time Marketing & PR, Newsjacking and Marketing Lessons from the Grateful Dead. And, interesting fact – he has one of the largest private collections of artifacts from the Apollo lunar program. He is thought to be the only person in the world with a lunar module descent engine thrust chamber in his living room! Are you struggling with building fans for your business? Then this episode is for you. David Meerman Scott joins me on the show to teach us how we can make our fan base by bringing our passion into a business. David shares an example of how a dentist was struggling to build a fan base for his dentistry practice. David asked him about his passion. He said he loved being on the skateboard. David advised him to bring skateboarding to his business. Six months down the line, he called David to say the idea worked. The dentist introduced skateboarding in his practice. Also, he would post images of himself skating on his website and Instagram. His fans increased tremendously. Equally, when we bring our passion to our businesses, we attract more people to be our fans. Listen in to learn more How to build fans as an entrepreneur Number one, what is the medium that you're most comfortable in? Because some people may not want to do videos like us. So, what are you most comfortable doing? Number two, bring out your passion when you do things you are comfortable with. David's inner superpower David believes he has an uncanny ability to see patterns in the universe that other people don't see before other people see him. He can articulate those patterns in a way. Typically, in the form of a book ahead of the curve and what people are talking about. Timestamps: [00:25] Benefits of presenting while standing up [02:16] Getting to know David [06:00] What's the best way for entrepreneurs to build fans? [18:47] David's inner superpower Quotes: “The web is not about spending money on advertising. The best way to market on the web is to create amazing content.” “We humans are attracted to people who are passionate about what they do.” “Whatever it is you do, share that passion with the world.” “When you're part of your tribe, you're safe and comfortable. The Carbon Almanac: It's Not Too Late with Seth Godin and David Meerman Scott About the Book: When it comes to the climate, we don't need more marketing or anxiety. We need established facts and a plan for collective action. The climate is the fundamental issue of our time, and now we face a critical decision. Whether to be optimistic or fatalistic, whether to profess skepticism or to take action. Yet it seems we can barely agree on what is really going on, let alone what needs to be done. We urgently need facts, not opinions. Insights, not statistics. And a shift from thinking about climate change as a “me” problem to a “we” problem. The Carbon Almanac is a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration between hundreds of writers, researchers, thinkers, and illustrators that focuses on what we know, what has come before, and what might happen next. Drawing on over 1,000 data points, the book uses cartoons, quotes, illustrations, tables, histories, and articles to lay out carbon's impact on our food system, ocean acidity, agriculture, energy, biodiversity, extreme weather events, the economy, human health, and best and worst-case scenarios. Visually engaging and built to share, The Carbon Almanac is the definitive source of facts and the basis for a global movement to fight climate change. This isn't what the oil companies, marketers, activists, or politicians want you to believe. This is what's really happening, right now. Our planet is in trouble, and no one concerned group, corporation, country, or hemisphere can address this on its own. Self-interest only increases the problem. We are in this together. And it's not too late for concerted, collective action for change. About the Guests: From The Carbon Almanac website… Seth Godin is the Founding Editor of The Carbon Almanac and is the author of twenty bestsellers, a daily blogger, and the founder of one of the first Internet companies. He paddles his canoe on the Hudson River every day.
