With no obvious topic for the week, we thought we'd cover whatever you all wanted us to talk about with our occasional dive into the mailbag covering everything from progress and endurance as a player to Endurance as a Neoform win condition - followed by a delightful combo platter courtesy of Matt Nass and matsugan.1:36:30 Matt Nass + matsugan Amulet Lotus Belchermatsugan's latest adventures Patreon / Twitter / Discord
One of the biggest decks to come out of the Phyrexia: All Will Be One metagame was Neoform Atraxa. The deck joins a long list of powerful midrange strategies that can effectively combo out early into an Atraxa, Grand Unifier and take over the game with either a huge creature or incredible card advantage. While it might not be able to always play against the top decks of the format like Rakdos Midrange, it has shown itself not to be taken lightly and that it can take unsuspecting metagames by storm. With Dreams of Ashiok still on vacation, he introduced us to one of his friends in Canada that has a lot of experience with the deck. The First Pioneers welcome Canadian Magic the Gathering player Andrew (@andrw1232) to tell us everything he knows about this new and exciting strategy. Whether you've been wondering how to play the deck, or how to beat it, be sure to listen to this week's episode! Season 16, Episode 6: Brew Session (Arcane Proxy) + Flashback (Vesuvan Duplimancy) We kick off our Brothers' War brewing season with a look at Arcane Proxy, Pioneer's first playable Snapcaster-like effect. Arcane Proxy, like the rest of the Prototype creatures, is surprisingly resistant to shenanigans. The only outstanding synergy is casting See the Truth from the graveyard. In that scenario, you get a full three cards, reminiscent of Shardless Agent into Ancestral Vision for Legacy aficionados. What about the rest of the time? Is a three mana 2/1 useful enough if it's just recasting a 1 mana cantrip or removal spell? Should we be looking at more impressive 2 mana instants and sorceries? Or perhaps can we get really crazy and use Arcane Proxy to support aggressive self-mill strategies, such as unearthing a Perennial Behemoth and then flashing back a Neoform from the graveyard? David has brewed four decks to put these various theories to the test. On the Flashback, Zach and David got some reps in with “Dark-Dweller Duplimancy,” a slick Izzet midrange list that uses Vesuvan Duplimancy to summon a massive army of Goblin Dark-Dwellers. David had great results; was Manacymbal able to duplimancy them? Like our content? Support us on Patreon and join our brewing community! This week The Dive Down goes back to Historic. After bursting out briefly in song, the crew breaks down the metagame from last weekend's SCG Satellite Tournaments and reels in shock from one or two insights. Dave manages to make a recap of the Arena Open all about him. Stan is unsurprised. Shane is amused. After that we dive down into three of the best decks in Historic... that we haven't spoken about that much yet. Faithless Brewing, Episode 83: Sea Gate Stormcaller Snapcaster Mage has been with us since 2011. In those ten years, we have learned an important lesson: Accept no substitutes! New printings might aspire to the throne, but no one can topple the King of Snap. So what does that mean for a card like Sea Gate Stormcaller? The stats are similar, but the play pattern is entirely different: Stormcaller plays at sorcery speed, and only works on small spells that are still in your hand. The upside? You get a very tempo-positive turn, and a copy effect that interacts favorably with additional costs like Neoform or Village Rites. Stormcaller is a challenge to be sure, but a potentially rewarding one if we can crack the code. Time to put on our brewing caps and head to the queues! Decklists for Episode 83 Like our content? Faithless Brewing, Episode 14: Watcher for Tomorrow Look at your top 4 cards and choose the best one. Then, do it again. And again. As many times are you can blink! Watcher for Tomorrow offers selection and value reminiscent of Narset or even Dig Through Time, all stapled onto an efficient creature. The only catch? You have to make him die. The crew thinks they are up to the task, with a few different possible shells. Which ones will have what it takes? Spice Roundup Snowy Niv-Mizzet: 5-1-1, SCG IQ Newington. Promising results with this snow manabase featuring Arcum's Astrolabe, Pillar of the Paruns, Search for Tomorrow and Wrenn and Six. Brewers' Mailbag What is the most competitive Faithless Brewing deck? This question is like an onion: many layered and with lots of tears. The crew peels it back as we ponder deck options for GP Minneapolis. Flashback: Yawgmoth, Thran Physician The Yawgfather has many talents, from card draw, to board control, to infinite combos with undying creatures. But how much should we lean on this card? Is the undying combo viable as a primary plan, or should that be a secondary angle in a creature based aggro deck? Monoblack Zombies: 2-3 league, was using its recursive creatures too fairly 4c Undying Evolution: 6-4 leagues, Neoform + undying allows for a strong aggro plan, but the list can definitely be streamlined Reference lists: Jund Superfriends (lucky_dragon, 5-0 league): an intriguing take on Yawgmoth + tokens for value Brew Session: Watcher for Tomorrow Jeskai Saheeli Bant Blink (Sketch) UW Hatebear Blink (Sketch) Reference lists: Bant Blink (TscheggschDePoegg, 5-0 league) Bant Blink (Gabriel Nassif, Fandom Legends) Eternal Command (Shota Yasooka, Players' Championship 2012) Contact Us Twitter: @FaithlessMTG Email: faithless.brewing@gmail.com Homepage: faithlessbrewing.podbean.com
Faithless Brewing, Episode 1: NeoformEldritch Evolution hit the gym and got a little leaner, a little meaner, and potentially a lot more powerful. The crew dives deep into Neoform, an exciting new tutor from War of the Spark. What can we do with this card? Is it just another creature toolbox option, or are there more powerful synergies to be unlocked? This week, we dive into the results from the first major event of War of the Spark standard. What did we find? We found that red deck still wins. We talk about why this deck had such a good weekend and what decks it faced in day 2. We talk about some new cards that are in the format, some we like and some we already can't wait to rotate out. Then we get into some decks we are interested in playing for upcoming events and talk about what looks interesting about them. Then we get into some brews. We talk about what worked, what did not work and where we are going next. A degenerate Modern combo deck comes up in the form of Neoform-brand (you see what I did there). Finally, we talk about where the Arena Meta game is at and what we have been seeing.
