In this edition of The Overthinking MTG Podcast, HamHocks42 breaks down his impression of Lich-Knight's Conquest after playing with it in the Wilds of Eldraine Streamer Event (formerly known as Early Access). WOE has some amazing designs, and Lich-Knight's Conquest is absolutely one of them. It being able to reanimate multiple amazing creatures like Atraxa, Grand Unifier, Toxrill, the Corrosive, Etali, Primal Conquerer, or the new Gruff Triplets, this card has an opportunity to pop off in the right hands. If a players is going all-in on the strategy, they need assets that can fill the graveyard and leave material on the field to satisfy Lich-Knight's Conquest's multi-bargain requirement such as Collector's Vault, The Modern Age, and Teachings of the Kirin. In Standard, this won't be hard to pull off. Overthinking MTG: a Closer Look at Individual Cards

There has been a lot of hullabaloo around the upcoming Standard Banned and Restricted Announcement scheduled for May 29th, 2023. With the knowledge that there won't be a Standard rotation coming up this Fall, Standard players everywhere (especially MTG Arena grinders) anxiously await the news of what will be banned. Additionally, there was an alleged leak of the ban announcement that claimed to have been pulled off the Wizards of the Coast website that had been written up to look like the official ban announcement. Wizards of the Coast addressed the "leak" and stated it was a fake and not to be trusted. One of the biggest decks to come out of the Phyrexia: All Will Be One metagame was Neoform Atraxa. The deck joins a long list of powerful midrange strategies that can effectively combo out early into an Atraxa, Grand Unifier and take over the game with either a huge creature or incredible card advantage. While it might not be able to always play against the top decks of the format like Rakdos Midrange, it has shown itself not to be taken lightly and that it can take unsuspecting metagames by storm. With Dreams of Ashiok still on vacation, he introduced us to one of his friends in Canada that has a lot of experience with the deck. Season 17, Episode 14: Brew Session (Shining Shoal) + Lord of the Rings First Look Shining Shoal is well on its way to becoming a Modern staple. It provides massive swings in a red-heavy metagame and generally terrorizes the combat step against creature decks. It is also one of the trickier cards in the format, both in understanding its niche interactions and in finding the correct shell to harness its power. Today on Faithless Brewing we welcome special guest Lawson Zandi (Zanman on MTGO) who has played some 50 leagues with Shining Shoal in various configurations, stacking up trophies in the process. Lawson explains the strengths and weaknesses of the original Shining Humans list with Chancellor of the Annex, the transition to Hatebears and Taxes strategies using Ondu Inversion, and the possibilities of Leyline Binding in a “5 color Mono White” manabase. We also take a first look at The One Ring (which one co-host describes as “the most powerful planeswalker legal in Modern”) and track new developments with Atraxa, Grand Unifier. I did just that on this very channel in my recent Griselbrand episode (https://youtu.be/RuYtRHTdt-I), in which I described the benefits of pitching Atraxa, Grand Unifier to Force of Will. I described one of the benefits being that you get to reanimate Atraxa after the fact... A thing you literally can't do under any circumstance. Whoopsie. So today, I'm here to set the record straight and get that sorted out. Oh, and I also misread Jin-Gitaxias, so we cover that too. If you're going to run a strategy like reanimation or sneak attack that can cheat a large creature onto the battlefield, why would you choose anything else? Atraxa has a long and storied history as a character in Commander as well with Atraxa, Praetor's Voice being a groan-inducing commander to reveal at the start of any game. It's oddly fitting that her latest iteration be an equally frustrating card. Season 17, Episode 7: Brew Session (Atraxa, Grand Unifier) + Flashback (Tyvar, Jubilant Brawler) Atraxa, Grand Unifier is a tremendous creature. No one would dispute that. But is it really possible that Atraxa is the strongest creature in all of Magic? Recent tournament results from Standard, Legacy, Modern, and even Vintage have seen Atraxa decks soaring to the top of the standings. This is a heavyweight creature, much more likely to be cheated into play than cast fairly. But once on the battlefield, Atraxa does things other creatures can only dream of. Her trigger looks at a massive 10 cards (1/6th of a typical library), making this less of a “draw 4 cards” and more of a “draw 10, discard 6.” And unlike Niv-Mizzet Reborn, Atraxa grants access to these cards with almost no deckbuilding concessions. Want to use Atraxa to grab a Mox Amber and an Ephemerate? You are welcome to, and you even keep a few other cards for your trouble. What truly sets Atraxa apart is how she helps you even before entering the battlefield. For better or worse, we live in the era of free pitch cards, and Atraxa pitches to everything from Solitude and Grief (more Ephemerate targets) to Force of Vigor and Force of Negation. That means your Atraxa turn doesn't have to end when you tap out for Atraxa, as you can follow up with a Grief or even a free protection spell like Not Of This World. The sky is the limit for Atraxa, and her price has been skyrocketing accordingly. We'll do our part this week to drive that price even higher, as we attempt to find new homes for Atraxa in both Modern and Pioneer. Whatever happens, one thing is clear: never bet against a Niv-Mizzet trigger!   Like our content? Support us on Patreon and join our brewing community! Season 17, Episode 6: Weekly Roundup (Modern + Pioneer) A full week of online tournaments with Phyrexia: All Will Be One are now in the books, and new format staples are emerging in both Modern and Pioneer. It starts with The Mycosynth Gardens, a card that Amulet Titan players have given rave reviews. The only question seems to be: where does Valakut+Dryad fit into the newly colorless manabase? Meanwhile, Dimir Mill players have been feasting upon the Amulet Hopeful sporting playsets of a new toy of their own: Jace, the Perfected Mind. An on-plan threat that plays to the board and has huge upside and versatility seems to be exactly what Dr. Mill ordered. Finally, Atraxa, Grand Unifier is a card in the midst of a meteoric rise. In just days the card has quadrupled in value following tournament wins in every format. With Phyrexia: All Will Be One finally revealed in all of its machine glory, we are ready to dive into the glorious work of brewing. Today on Faithless Brewing we present our Modern set review. (This time around Pioneer will be treated separately, so check out our next episode if you are interested in that format). Two cards stand out immediately for their high potential in Modern. The first is Venerated Rotpriest, a 1 drop that could bolster traditional Infect strategies. More importantly, Rotpriest may be powerful enough to spawn a new Storm archetype. Thanks to Summoner's Pact, Ground Rift, and free spells, it's possible to assemble a lethal combination consistently by turn 3. Spellskite not only runs interference but doubles as additional copies of the Priest for purposes of accumulating triggers. The Mycosynth Gardens is enticing in Amulet Titan as a way to set up double Amulet kills. While the Titan experts run their experiments, we can also contemplate other cheap artifacts that might benefit from low-cost doubling. Rarely do lands offer so much brewing potential at such an efficient rate. Beyond those two blue chips, several other cards cards could upgrade existing strategies. Gleeful Demolition gives critical momentum to “whack” strategies alongside Kuldotha Rebirth, Jace, the Perfected Mind is a new toy for Mill with lots of optionality Soulless Jailer improves upon Drannith Magistrate, and the black Skullbomb is a clean 2 for 1 for Urza's Saga. Beyond the known strategies, Phyrexia: ONE also offers enticing brewing targets for the adventurous. Atraxa, Grand Unifier may be the new premier threat to cheat into play. Tyvar, Jubilant Brawler and Nahiri, the Unforgiving open up new brewing space on three mana planeswalkers, while Capricious Hellraiser can fit into fair and unfair strategies alike. And don't rule out the Mother of Machines herself: while Commander players wring their hands over Elesh Norn, her impressive powers may well extend into 1v1 formats. For a standard set release there is a lot going on beneath the surface, and plenty to keep our attentions occupied in the eternal formats. What cards do you have your eye on? Having a plan Starts even before you sit down to a game It happens when you’re building your deck Decks should have a plan and ultimately, aside from everyone having fun while playing, this plan should end in winning. Games vary wildly, be ready to adapt your plan, or drop it all together Sometimes the board gets clogged up, and you need to wait on a Board Wipe before you commit anymore resource Sometimes an opponent casts Wheel of Fortune, or Windfall, and now you have to come up with a new plan, cause your old plan is in the graveyard Sometimes you may have to rely on resources outside your deck, like Politics Be ready for your plan to change at a moment’s notice Super Friends Poison counters +1/+1 Counters Some Commanders facilitate having a plan more than others. Example, Atraxa, Praetors’ Voice Some Commanders are harder: Example Ertai the Corrupted, Tatyova, Benthic Druid Zack - I have lots of ideas for decks and I’ll see cool commanders that have sweet synergies that allow me to do cool things like generate infinite mana, draw a bunch of cards, or do other things like that, but I always have a problem finishing games.  If you remember from two episodes ago, a slot ryan and I didn’t overlap in was wincons. This is because I like to specifically spell out what cards I plan to use to win, whether it be a combo or an eldrazi. Ryan - This is how I win :) Most games I kind of spin my wheels and do things, but I rarely win.  Plan for your win-cons Example: Ryan has an Aryel, Knight of Windgrace deck, and cannot win outside of the combat step. Glacial Chasm/Constant Mists are nearly impossible for that deck to beat Maybe add some cards like Skull Storm or Approach of the Second Sun, or Torment of Hailfire Maybe play a card like Meteor Golem (Thanks to Matt Jorgenson @MetalMatReturns) Maybe a Laboratory Maniac or Jace, Wielder of Mysteries Maybe Rite of Replication or Echo Storm Emry, Lurker of the Loch gets completely shutdown by Rest in Peace Maybe even have a backup plan or two. Attacking with fat creatures. Oftentimes this is accentuated with a little bit of the ole Craterhoof Behemoth, or Overrun, or Triumph of the Horde Mirrodin besieged Darksteel Reactor Revel in Riches Mortal Combat Alternate condition win cons Sharuum, Phyrexian Metamorph, Bitter Ordeal Exquisite Blood and Sanguine Bond Comboing out the table Milling Out someone, or Large amounts of mana and a Stroke of Genius Exsanguinate Torment of Hailfire Expropriate Past in Flames Mizzik’s Mastery  Big Mana/Spells So what are some common Win Cons? You’ll find games easier to navigate when you have a plan. It’s also a good idea to build in some backup plans, and maybe even some cards to counterspell or protect your primary plan. This week we’re playing Magic Commander Anthology 2, the most recent release of the Commander Anthology series.  The Anthology series take some of the most powerful preconstructed decks that Wizards of the Coast has released as previous entries in the Commander series and puts them together in a boxed set.  The stock Commanders, which we are playing with right out of the box, include Daretti, Scrap Savant, Atraxa, Preator’s Voice, The Mimeoplasm, and Kalemne, Disciple of Iroas. This week in beers we’ve got Teej going thematic with Magic Dragon Double IPA from Hop Haus, Robert goes harder with Mike’s Harder Lemonade, Schnell goes dark with Night Rain Porter from O’so, and Nelson takes one for the team and drinks leftover Coors Light from Junior’s bachelor party.  Stay tuned to see if he survives, or if he’s felled by The Silver Bullet.  I mean, the mountains weren’t even blue yet…

Hello and welcome to another Commander Cookout Podcast. This week Brando and Ryan tackle a listener submission in what could end up being a little controversial. The listener is having trouble with what sounds like a member of his play group playing decks that are designed to make games end in a draw. Interesting! Several options are explored, examples are provided and even a spicy new use for Atraxa comes to mind. This episode is not meant to come across as condescending in any way and we are not targeting anyone with our discussion. It's just a very honest discussion by two people who are passionate about the game of Magic. Let us know what you think by sending an email to commandercookout@gmail.com. Sometimes you want to do what all the cool kids are doing, but do it your own way. Then you find out your way sucks... Kyle has a therapy session with Andy, talking out his hatred towards his Atraxa deck. They break down why he avoided calling in all planeswalkers for a super friends deck, how immoral infect is, and why +1/+1 counters don't work in our play group. Music this episode from HOME's Resting State album, track 15. We're super grateful he let's us use his music. Check his tunes out:  If you're wondering what Kyle's deck looked like to instill an unpopular hatred towards Atraxa in him, here it is:   Big shout out to Mikey Patch for all our art work! .
