Every Dungeon Master begins in the same place: excitement tempered by uncertainty. You're about to guide a group of wildly different human beings through a story that only exists because all of you choose to believe in it together. That takes responsibility. That takes awareness. And it takes a willingness to understand not just rules… but people. Today, we're laying the foundation. Welcome to Dungeon Mastering 101: Core Foundations. Discussion Understanding People Before Dice Before you think about combat mechanics, monster stat blocks, or worldbuilding, you must start with the most important element at your table: the human beings sitting around it. Each player is a mixture of: personal history, culture and beliefs, unique motivations, individual learning styles, and different comfort levels with performance, math, and social dynamics Your job as a DM is not to homogenize them. Your job is to celebrate their differences and build a game that allows each one to shine. Recognize that no two people come to your table with the same expectations. The moment you embrace that, you begin to see the game not as a rigid structure… but as a living conversation. The Three Roles of a Dungeon Master A beginner DM often thinks their job is to “tell the story” or “run the monsters.” But those are only pieces of a larger whole. You actually play three roles at once: The Facilitator: You provide structure. You decide the pace. You keep the game moving, gently guiding everyone toward a shared experience. The Arbiter: Rules exist to support fun, not dominate it. You interpret them, make quick judgments, and maintain fairness — even when the entire table is watching. The Story Shepherd: You don't force a plot; you cultivate it. The players bring energy, curiosity, chaos, and creativity. You channel that into a narrative that feels meaningful. A great DM doesn't control the story. A great DM leads it. The Five Pillars of Running the Game Every session you run rests on five foundational pillars. Understanding these early will save you from the most common beginner mistakes. Combat: Not about numbers — about tension, stakes, and cinematic moments. Exploration: Let players discover, investigate, and poke around in a world that reacts to them. Social Interaction: NPCs, factions, rumors, alliances — all opportunities for the players to express themselves. Downtime: Breathing room. Character reflection. Progression. The glue between adventures. Character Arcs: The emotional throughlines. Every player is the protagonist of their own personal story, even within the larger campaign. Your best sessions mix these like ingredients. Too much of one throws everything off balance. Player Motivations (The 8 Types) If you want your table to stay engaged, you must understand why each person sits down to play. These correlate with teh Player Types I mentioned last week: Actor, Explorer, Instigator, Power Gamer, Slayer, Storyteller, Thinker, and Watcher. Most players fall into blends of these eight motivations: Combat-Driven – loves the fight, tactics, and victory Story-Driven – wants narrative depth Social-Driven – thrives on roleplay and interactions Puzzle-Driven – enjoys clever problems to solve Power-Driven – wants to grow stronger, gain prestige Discovery-Driven – loves lore, secrets, and worldbuilding Character-Driven – focuses on personal arcs and emotional journeys Chaos/Thrill-Driven – wants surprise, randomness, and wild moments Your job? Identify each player's blend, then feed them the content that lights them up. This alone can transform your DMing. Practical Skills Every Beginner Should Practice You don't need to master everything at once. Start with these reliable skills: Keep the Game Moving: Perfect decisions are less important than decisive ones. Make a call, keep the energy flowing. Learn to Say “Yes, But…”: “Yes, you can attempt that… but here's the risk.” This protects player agency while preserving challenge. Prep for Flexibility, Not Control: Prepare situations, not scripts. Players will destroy your plot — let them. It usually leads to something better. Share the Spotlight: Track who hasn't had a moment to shine, then give them one. Players remember how you make them feel far more than any plot twist. The First Big Secret of DMing Here's the truth: You don't need to be perfect. You don't need to know every rule. You don't even need to be the most creative person at the table. You just need to be present, attentive, and willing to learn* session by session. Every great DM started by fumbling through their first adventure. Closing Takeaway Dungeon mastering isn't about control — it's about collaboration. It's not about rules — it's about people. And it's not about perfection — it's about intention. If you embrace that mindset now, everything that comes later — encounters, villains, worldbuilding, arcs — becomes easier. However, his second exact square occurred on November 7, the day he pardoned 70+ people who'd been instrumental in his “stop the steal” elector scheme leading to the U.S. Capitol insurrection on January 6, 2021. Next he's gone after his political opponents for doing their jobs, such as former FBI Director James Comey, NYS Attorney General Letitia James, & more, as he seeks revenge against those attempting to hold him legally accountable for his own wrongdoings.What's important to realize now is that Uranus, which remains retrograde in Taurus until February 3, 2026, will once again comes into orb of squaring his Leo Ascendant/Regulus between April 6-25, 2026. It's on April 26 of next year that Uranus direct reenters Gemini for the duration of its transit there.The point is that Trump is not done yet with his potential fall from grace, based on ancient archetypal astrological calculations which foretell a diminished future for him, to put it diplomatically. The point is that now we can recognize such language for what it is—the deeply violent not-so-shadow side of Donald Trump when he calls for the death of his political opponents by saying they should be hanged for telling the military not to follow illegal orders.Meanwhile, however, just before Mercury stations direct again on November 29, Saturn will station direct in Pisces November 27. We continue now to review our plans for the future (Mercury Rx), & strengthen our connection to what's real versus fantastical thinking (Neptune Rx.) In addition, we experience the shattering of “smug ideals which will not withstand true, objective clarity,” as Jungian astrologer Erin Sullivan puts it in her book “Retrograde Planets” (Uranus Rx.) And we continue to review what is our TRUE inner sense of morality, ethics, & integrity--versus that which society tells us is moral & just—& bring such inner knowing into greater consciousness (Jupiter Rx.)When Saturn stations direct at 29'09” Pisces, it will remain “within the same degree for almost six weeks on either side of the station,” according to Sullivan. “Upon its direction, one might feel as if moving in slow motion.” Despite this, something new will have “been born, but it will need a few months to become consciously manifest,” she notes.When Saturn direct reaches the degree at which it originally stationed, or 1'56” Aries, by March 2, 2026, we'll be able to see the completion of previous plans which seemed stalled during the retrograde, according to Sullivan. “Alternatively, a tentative plan or fantasy may come to reality in the last stages of the cycle,” Sullivan points out, adding “negatively, it will finish off any antiquated or non-productive relationship, projects, or activities,” as “outmoded & evening damaging values or relationships long past their productive stage do end,” she concludes.Given that the Sun entered Jupiter-ruled Sagittarius November 21, Jupiter's retrograde in Cancer has the Sadge archetype as its dispositor until the Sun moves on & into Capricorn December 21. The current administration's plans to shrink the government, eliminate diversity, equity, & inclusive policies, to hunt down & jail or deport immigrants here legally, to deny educational institutions federal funding, continue to promote misogyny, & to have the president continually profit financially from his foreign cryptocurrency deals--& so much more—is a WANT.But going after Donald Trump's political adversaries, & ignoring his own policy's negative economic effects with zero regard for his nation's citizens well-being might not be exactly what his soul actually needs, lol. Tom learned, early on, about music's complex and distinct sounds and rhythms as well as the imagery that great storytelling can evoke.  In his mid 20's, Tom moved to the West Coast where he soon found work in the Specialty Lighting industry. Marriage and 2 young children meant putting his musical ambitions on hold, although he continued to write songs almost daily as he traveled the world to seek out the newest innovations in lighting. His career established him as an outstanding businessman, as he built three very successful Specialty Lighting Companies: Osram, Ushio and his own company, BLC International. Through it all, he continued to hear the siren's song as songwriting provided the creative outlet in his life.  Things changed in 2014, when Tom decided to dust off his prodigious arsenal of songs and put them to the test. When he attended recording artist Steve Earle's Songwriters Master Class and Retreat, he knew that he had found his people. From there, he turbo-charged his songs, taking them to a whole new level.  On June 26th 2025 the Album YORICK was released, highlighted by the title track Yorick based on a character from Shakespeare's Hamlet. This week on Play Comics, we're firing up our reactor cores and diving headfirst into the absolutely electrifying world of Astro Boy Omega Factor for the Game Boy Advance – because apparently someone at Banpresto looked at Osamu Tezuka's groundbreaking manga and thought, “You know what this 1950s icon needs? A portable fighting game experience where he punches evil robots directly in their non-existent feelings.” Released in 2003, this 2D brawler took the mighty atom himself and somehow convinced an entire development team that what fans REALLY wanted was the chance to mash buttons while watching our favorite nuclear-powered pint-sized hero exchange haymakers with increasingly ridiculous mechanical adversaries. Sure, the original manga was about philosophical questions of robot rights and what it means to be human, but why dwell on existential dread when you could just… punch things? Joining us for this high-voltage episode is Hamish Steele from Super Mario Moment – a man who knows a thing or two about platform and fighting game mechanics, though probably with significantly fewer isotope-based superpowers than Astro Boy packs. Together, we'll explore whether this GBA adaptation captured the essence of Tezuka's revolutionary creation or if it just left us feeling like we'd been on the receiving end of one of Astro Boy's arm cannons. So charge up your atomic energy reserves, practice your most devastating uppercut, and prepare for an episode that's absolutely radiating with gaming chaos. Will this manga adaptation prove to be a shining beacon of handheld excellence, or will it fizzle out faster than Astro's battery in a poorly designed dungeon? Inside is the skull of Gregor Clegane, which Obara Sand places on a marble pedestal. Doran declares that “the Mountain rides no more.” Ser Balon Swann, there on behalf of Queen Cersei, is made uneasy by the spicy food, the politics, and Princess Arianne's careful attention.Cersei's letter requests that Myrcella visit King's Landing, with Trystane to accompany her and Doran to take Oberyn's seat on the small council. Doran suggests they travel by ship, and Balon's reluctance to travel by sea does not go unnoticed.After the feast, Doran gathers Obara, Nymeria, Tyene, Arianne, Ellaria, and Hotah in his solar. Ellaria breaks at the Sand Snakes' refusal to accept the end of the blood feud with the Lannisters, rejecting the endless cycle of vengeance. When she leaves, the Sand Snakes demand war, but Doran forces them to swear obedience before revealing that Cersei's invitation is a trap meant to kill Trystane on the road. Instead of violating guest right by killing Swann, Doran assigns each Sand Snake a role: Obara will lead Swann to hunt Darkstar, Nymeria will escort Myrcella to court and take the small council seat, and Tyene will infiltrate the Sept of Baelor. Arianne will remain in Sunspear as his heir.
