Hello Giant Robot FM listeners! The wheels of history are turning furiously and the GRFM team, joined once again by Megan D, want you to know that it's the stories of ordinary people that are the most important. Ramba Ral, Crowley Hamon, and Char Aznable can get bent. No. No! I refuse to make the obvious joke. Ramba Ral would be ashamed of me. This one’s overdue, but…
It's time for our continuing readthrough of Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko. In volume 3, we meet Ramba Ral, one of First Gundam's more honorable antagonists. We also get some more layered character development, a look at the rest of the Zabi family, and at least one major plot twist that recontextualizes what we've experienced so far. Yas delivers incredibly exciting and thoughtful storytelling. There's also plenty of sweet, sweet mecha action. Hang out with us as we inspect the various story elements of this masterfully crafted manga!
This week brought the first Nintendo Direct presentation of 2022, and if it wasn't the most earth-shattering event ever, it sure brought a lot to love for fans of obscure JRPGs and/or sports games. We discuss all the news in depth, talk a little more Genshin Impact, and even spend a good 15 minutes gushing over the recent run of classic Doctor Who Blu-ray sets, before diving into Part V of Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin. “Clash at Loum” delivers not only the OVA's finest episode, but one of the single most memorable and powerful installments in the 40-year history of Gundam. Dramatizing Zeon's disastrous colony drop operation, Sayla Mass making a stand at Side 5, Ramba Ral and Crowley Hamon bemoaning the loss of a world that's passed them by, and Char Aznable taking the final, ultimate step towards becoming the legendary Red Comet, this episode is absolutely overflowing with pantheon-level sequences that are among the greatest Gundam has ever given us, all combining to paint a deeply affecting portrait of a world spun entirely out of control. This is as good as it gets.Time Chart:Intro: 0:00:00 – 0:04:47Stuff: 0:04:47 – 0:33:45Nintendo Direct: 0:33:45 – 1:19:02Gundam Origin V: 1:19:02 – 3:15:44Subscribe to our YouTube Channel!Subscribe to the WEEKLY SUIT GUNDAM Podcast!Subscribe for free to 'The Weekly Stuff' in Apple Podcasts!Follow Jonathan Lack on Twitter!Follow Sean Chapman on Twitter!

The Gundam Bingers-- Jay, Zeke & Chris-- reach the half-way point of "Mobile Suit Gundam," as the heroes are lured into a trap, and then we discuss topics such as the parallels between Garma Zabi and Ramba Ral's arcs, and Jay notes his suspicions about Char's motivations after revelations come out.
As we hit the middle stretch of Mobile Suit Gundam and discuss episodes 14 through 25, the show gets increasingly dark, with the challenges faced by the crew of the White Base growing ever more perilous. We’re introduced to new foes like M’quve and Kycilia Zabi, alongside the inimitable Ramba Ral and his companion Hamon, enemies who present Amuro and Bright their fiercest opponents yet, but are also perhaps the most honorable and upstanding characters on the series to date. As the lines between ‘good’ and ‘evil’ grow ever blurrier, the body count starts piling up, and series creator Yoshiyuki Tomino more than earns his nickname, “Kill ‘Em All Tomino.” It’s another terrific, if frequently depressing, set of episodes, as we round the halfway point of the series and head into the back half full steam ahead. Show Notes This week, we recap and review Mobile Suit Gundam episode 17 (16 in the US), "Amuro Deserts," discuss our first impressions, and provide commentary and research on: flight simulations, bazookas, the Antarctic Treaty, Zeon's resource strategy, and two-rank promotions, all with a special guest.- While Wikipedia has a nice overview, various technology publications, flight schools, and other aviation industry websites also have information on the history of flight simulators.- Two overviews of how bazookas work, plus a picture of the "bazooka" instrument that the weapon is named for, and an explanation of the backblast area.- For his discussion of the Antarctic Treaty, our friend and guest-voice Sean consulted various online resources about Gundam, as well as one of the Gundam novels:Tomino, Yoshiyuki. Mobile Suit Gundam: Awakening, Escalation, Confrontation. Stone Bridge, 2004. (Pages 99 and 448 of the 2012 English-language printing)- In discussing Zeon's resource strategy, Sean references Operation Edelweiss, Japan's preparations for WWII, and some more general information on strategy related to the control of necessary raw materials during WWII.- When Thom discusses Ramba Ral's pursuit of a two-rank promotion, he mentions both the ranks of the Imperial Japanese Army (used in First Gundam's Japanese version), and the ranks of the Imperial Japanese Navy (used in First Gundam's English translation). For reference, the ranks in the Japan Self Defense Force (used by the Japanese armed forces at the time when First Gundam was made, and still in use today) are completely different.- Thom also mentioned a couple of famous military awards, namely the Victoria Cross and the Albert Medal (which he mistakenly referred to as the Albert Cross). The biography of Baron Richtofen (the Red Baron), with information about the German propaganda rumors that whoever shot him down would get a Victoria Cross, is:Burrows, William E. Richthofen: A True History of the Red Baron. London: Rupert Hart-Davis, 1970. The plot gets lost in the desert for ten episodes, but at least we get Ramba Ral out of it. This class covers questions submitted by our students: 1. When and where did the Spare Parts Gundams in 08th MS Team come from? 2. Are the ZERO system / newtype abilities ever explained? 3. Why did Ramba Ral help the Zabi family? 4. Could Zeon have won the One Year War? 5. What's a good Gundam series to start with? And exactly one other question!
Amuro is still out in the wastes. Ramba Ral is getting desperate as his supplies dwindle. The desert is hard on all of us. Today? Two decisive battles for the fate of the White Base, and one sad fallen war hero. RIP !
Rage, Jolly, and Jen talk about the middle third of "MSG: The Origin: Artesia's Sorrow." A bunch of other things happened, but let's get right down to what really matters: giant robots punching each other. Because hey, isn't that what Gundam is all about? We discuss big the robots, how they punch each other, and why Ramba Ral is the best puncher. Lunch Hour Anime Special is a Night of the Living Geeks podcast.
