In rural southeastern New Mexico, bank CEO and varsity bowling coach Ken Clayton often takes his team on 500-mile one-day roundtrips for bowling tournaments. For Clayton, that commitment to going the distance is also what community banking is about. On the latest episode of the ABA Banking Journal Podcast — presented by R&T Deposit Solutions — Clayton discusses what makes community banks like his tick. And as chair of ABA's Government Relations Council, he also talks about ABA's legislative and regulatory priorities for the year ahead, including tax reform and Subchapter S, regulatory challenges like the Section 1071 final rule, the SAFER Banking Act, credit card interchange policy and more. For Clayton's 22-employee bank, policy challenges hit home in a challenging way since he and his CFO also share duties as the bank's compliance officers. “As a banker, don't just sit at home and say, ‘Gee, I wish this was different,'” Clayton says. “Get involved. It's very rewarding, not to mention that it helps your customer and it helps your community.” Clayton also discusses his own career journey in banking, his home community of Artesia and his approach to developing leaders within his bank. In less than 15 minutes, Medmastery's Cardiology Digest will give you the low-down on some of the most compelling studies in cardiology that clinicians with an interest in cardiovascular health need to know about. STUDY #1: We kick things off by exploring exactly where the CHA2DS2-VASc score fits into anticoagulation decisions in patients with silent atrial fibrillation. Building on the main findings from the ARTESiA and NOAH-AFNET 6 trials, this study sparks a thought-provoking discussion on the future of risk stratification. Tune in to hear insights that could shape your clinical practice.  Lopes, RD, Granger, CB, Wojdyla, DM, et al. 2024. Apixaban versus aspirin according to CHA2DS2-VASc score in subclinical atrial fibrillation: Insights from ARTESiA. J Am Coll Cardiol. In Press, Journal Pre-proof. (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jacc.2024.05.002) STUDY #2: Next, we break down misconceptions surrounding race and treatment efficacy in heart failure with reduced ejection fraction. This study shines a light on the impacts of renin-angiotensin system inhibition across different racial groups. See how these findings challenge the outdated genetic constructs of race, and what they mean for your approach to patient care. Shen, L, Lee, MM, Jhund, PS, et al. 2024. (https://doi.org/10.1001/jama.2024.6774) STUDY #3: Finally, we turn our focus to the V142I transthyretin gene variant, to evaluate its impacts on cardiovascular health within the U.S. Black population. This research not only highlights the need for targeted genetic screening but also raises important questions about the accessibility of costly treatments for transthyretin amyloidosis. The song “Replacement” on A CHORUS OF DISAPPROVAL's “Truth Gives Wings to Strength” LP is something of a cause célebre in the hardcore scene. Released in 1990, this song seemed to come with its own set of history behind it that was completely separate from the band itself. CHORUS Guitarist Jeff Banks explains this version presented here, culled from a practice demo that, despite saying it was VISUAL DISCRIMINATION, was really a pre-cursor to the eventual Visual Discrimination of Nemesis Records lore... “Jeff Simmerman, Dan Fisher and Derek Alford had this Peace Punk band out of Lakewood, CA with a working title of Visual Discrimination. Simmerman got kicked out of Artesia high school and started going to Cerritos and we got to talking in auto shop. Steve Winders, Tim Sawyer and I were in Dead Tradition with Tim's brother Byron and some guy named Morgan. Morgan was a great drummer, but I wasn't his favorite guy. Jeff Simmerman invited me to his house to jam. Turned out Derek Alford was just learning and couldn't really play the guitar, so it became Fisher and Simmerman and me. We got this kid David Hauck to sing a couple practices. I had written a few riffs, and Replacement was written at this time. I was such a huge Stalag 13 fan that I was trying to channel the song In Control through Replacement. When Dead Tradition kind of fizzled, I told Fisher and Simmerman that I have these two guys that could probably round out the lineup nicely. That's when Sawyer and Winders came into the fold. We played as that lineup for a little while and then the band split up into two factions. Fisher, Sawyer and Simmerman started a true Peace Punk band called Non-fiction with a guy named George Contreras from Cerritos. They recorded a demo and it was great. Very Discharge meets Iconoclast and locals peace punk band 5th Column. Steve Winders and I started a Straight Edge band in the mold of Uniform Choice called Denial with Steve's brother Jeff and some guy in my biology class named Rory Cowan. We recorded a 12-song demo, and Replacement in its most polished form was on that demo. After about a year, both bands fizzled. We decided to reform and combined Nonfiction and Denial, including the songs, etc. We needed a bass player, and there was this kid named Junior Beloki, who was in a history class where I was the teacher assistant. So I asked him if he would be interested and he was. So he became the bass player. That was the lineup for the demo and the first record. I always thought the Non-fiction songs were stronger than the Denial songs I had written. Replacement was cut and relegated. Once Chorus got going, many of the old Cerritos Straight Edge crew were calling for old Denial songs. The people on that montage on the Chorus record calling for Replacement are Gary Hornberger, Boxer Hardison, my dad, my mom, my high school basketball coach Don Saul and one of my old City of Cerritos supervisors Ernest Vital. He was the guy we all picked up the phrase 'Dud' from when we thought something was weak. We all still say to this day." Twelve Los Angeles County cities filed a lawsuit Friday seeking to postpone the controversial new zero-bail policy that allows some nonviolent defendants charged with felonies or misdemeanors to be cited and released after being arrested. The cities of Whittier, Arcadia, Artesia, Covina, Downey, Glendora, Industry, Lakewood, La Verne, Palmdale, Santa Fe Springs and Vernon are seeking an injunction to postpone the implementation of the Los Angeles County Superior Court's zero-bail schedule, which went into effect Sunday, according to a news release from the city of Glendora. The new bail policy was imposed by court officials who argued that a defendant's ability to pay bail should not be the key factor in determining whether they stay in jail after an arrest. The so-called zero-bail schedule has been a controversial issue around the country, with criminal justice reform advocates arguing that pretrial releases should be based on an individual's criminal history not on an arbitrary dollar amount.Support the show

Slushies, in this episode we consider two poems by C. Fausto Cabrera, both of which speak, in very different ways, to the imagination in building our sense of self. The notion of being seen, a topic of universal relevance to any writer or artist, is explored in the first poem, which ends with the line “stuck in between the covers wondering when you'll be back”, simultaneously exploring themes of incarceration or imprisonment. This discussion leads us to consider the many layers of being seen and Jason takes a moment to appreciate the “sexy time” of having a book tucked in your pocket. The second poem takes us on a related yet palpably different journey and reveals one of the paths our editorial discussions can take us to. Take a listen, you won't be disappointed!   This episode is brought to you by our sponsor Wilbur Records, who kindly introduced us to the artist is A.M.Mills whose song “Spaghetti with Loretta” now opens our show.    At the table: Kathleen Volk Miller, Jason Schneiderman, Samantha Neugebauer, and Dagne Forrest.   C. Fausto Cabrera is a multi-genre artist and writer currently incarcerated since 2003. His work has appeared in: The Colorado Review, The Antioch Review, Puerto del Sol, The American Literary Review, The Water~Stone Review, The Woodward Review, among others. "The Parameters of Our Cage" is his prose collaboration with photographer Alec Soth.             To Be Seen at All , "What makes us so deserving of space  in other people' s minds?"    -Daniel Ruiz     My boss in the kitchen asks me how it felt to be famous after looking up my Washington Post Magazine essay & cover art online. The question left me stuck I didn't feel famous. I hadn't received much mail in years. What does celebrity mean separate from saturation, fame to the incarcerated— but infamy?   I question the value of telling people about accomplishments, about publishing at all— in a place where your spades game gets more respect, & swagger's stuck in the last time you punched a muthafucker in the face, what' s the point? I just felt petty for wanting to be seen at all. Guards are more concerned with how many towels I have than who I become.   I'm being heard— & that should be the focus, right? Is the nobility of a thing in or on purpose? Or the other way around? Cause who ever does anything for nobility— I'm starving to be objectified: stripped  down by the new young blond guard like a Skinamax late nite B-movie, why else do hundreds of burpees if not to play into the bad boy fantasies of anyone watching?   I went away before social media, but had my Lil' cousin Artesia build me a platform to stand upon, thinkin' it'd present me somehow, someway, maybe keep me present— be on someone's mind or wall, admired even for a moment. The Past says they miss me, but since they never reach past the screen it's not the real me, only their memory. It's not about me at all—and neither should the work be.   There is a point to this poem, in its lack of trust. & none of it is an answer. How can I count on anything through a 2-way mirror? I am just a writer, the world through my eyes glows different due to the depths of my damage. When you close this book & move on I'll still be stuck in-between the covers,    wondering                                                when you'll be back.         In the Sun that Seeps from the Dungeons/ Window/ Everything is Bright                  Because God is in an algorithm I hear through the toggle of my shuffle button/ from a playlist I                                                            composed/ I tell myself/ that if I listen, while the TV projects a pretty face to see when I look up                 from what I'm reading of poetry, mechanical pencil, click, click, underlining & taking notes in                    the margins— sipping a mug of French vanilla creamer laden coffee w/thoughts swirling in my                       cinnamon head/ the sheer alchemy of it all should/ naturally combust! What butterfly wings must                          taste like/embers floating/escape the chaos, wondering west to set fires/troublesome/I                             want blood in the cut, I want noise/they made me something vicious.
