Episode 231 - Why Am I Feeling More Like The Grinch and Less Like Jolly Santa - Where Did My Love for the Holidays Go?Feeling indifferent or apathetic about the Christmas holidays, especially if you once loved the season, is more common than you might think. Many people lose their holiday joy over time due to changes in life circumstances, stress, or shifting priorities. If you're wondering where your love for the holidays has gone and how to navigate this season when you feel disconnected, here are some helpful approaches shared by others who've faced similar feelings:Start Small and Build Your Own Spirit: Don't wait for that magical feeling to return—begin by playing nostalgic Christmas music, putting up a few meaningful decorations, or watching a favorite holiday movie. Creating new or revisiting old traditions can gradually rekindle your excitement.Focus on What Matters to You: Let go of perfectionism or feeling obligated to do everything. Find one or two things that bring you comfort or joy—whether that's baking, cozy evenings in Christmas pajamas, or taking winter walks with a hot beverage.Create New Connections and Traditions: Engage with others by volunteering, donating, or simply reaching out to friends or family who may also be struggling. Generosity and connection can reignite the true spirit behind the holidays.Give Yourself Grace: Holiday apathy is okay. Be kind to yourself and acknowledge your feelings without guilt. Sometimes just accepting where you are emotionally can reduce stress.Add Visual Cues: Even if your heart isn't fully in it, small seasonal changes like lights, candles, or a wreath can create subtle reminders that help shift your mindset.Get Outside: Fresh air, exercise, and nature walks—even in chilly weather—can improve mood and help you feel more present.Seek What Sparks Joy for You: Whether it's singing carols, decorating a tiny tree, or making thoughtful gifts, engaging senses and doing activities you love can jumpstart holiday feelings.Remember, the holidays don't have one set definition or way to be celebrated. Find your own version that feels authentic and manageable, and gradually you may find your appreciation and joy returning.___https://dadspace.camusic provided by Blue Dot SessionsSong: The Big Ten https://app.sessions.blue/browse/track/258270

After a massive blue wave on Tuesday, you'd think Democrats would ride that momentum and keep fighting Trump's cruel policies. But nope, eight Senate Democrats just voted with Republicans to reopen the government without securing a deal on healthcare subsidies. That means premiums are going up, millions could lose coverage, and MAGA gets another win, all because Democrats blinked first. Again. This morning, Don is joined by friends of the show Jolly, Michael Fanone, Reecie Colbert, and Jack Cocchiarella to break down what this means for healthcare, the midterms, and the Democratic Party's backbone. Because after the week Democrats just had, this fold stings. This episode is sponsored by ZBiotics. Go to https://zbiotics.com/LEMON and use LEMON at checkout for 15% off first time orders. In this episode of Flowers & Folklore, we dive into the surprising history and tales surrounding the humble “bit-like-a-granny's-handbag' nasturtium, from its gory Greek naming origins to its gentle flower fairy depictions. We discover why this bright orange bloom was once associated with warriors and triumph, how Beatrix Potter, Claude Monet, and Cicely Mary Barker each captured its charm, and why it was once thought to repel serpents and bring good fortune. Along the way, we chat about Tales of the Shire (and Tolkien's opinionated spelling choices), there's poetry by Anne Spencer of the Harlem Renaissance, plus we uncover the curious Elizabeth Linnaeus phenomenon, and disappear down a rabbit hole over our mutual obsession with miniatures. It's a magical episode that'll make you see nasturtiums in a whole new (flashing?) light.Books, Art & Poetry* The Language of Flowers by Odessa Begay* Unearthing The Secret Garden by Martha McDowell* The Flower Fairies Alphabet (1934) by Cicely Mary Barker — “Nasturtium the Jolly” poem & illustration* The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter (Nasturtiums in Mr. McGregor's garden)* Lines to a Nasturtium poem by Anne Bethel Spencer * The Witch's Garden by Sandra Lawrence* Country Life article by Mark Diacono: “In praise of the humble nasturtium”* “How to do the flowers” by Constance SpryArtworks* Nasturtiums in a Blue Vase by Claude Monet* Beatrix Potter's Peter Rabbit nasturtium illustration* Cicely Mary Barker's Nasturtium FairyGames & Fun Bits* Tales of the Shire game by Wētā Workshop* Snaps from Sarah's Halloween dried floral headdress workshop * Dollhouse project & miniature-making course (affiliate link, also you can get 10% off your whole order with the code: KEELEY) Picture below of the beginning of Keeley's Brambly Hedge treehouse.Bonus video of Sarah's foster boy Bruno “helping” to clean up after the workshop:Have your own regional stories or nasturtium lore? A 1968 Halloween "Spook Show" in the Midwest left an unsettling heritage of urban legends possibly rooted in even more unsettling facts. What little is definitively known regarding this event comes from the newspaper archives of the Danville News-Gazette, in which we find a short October 28 promo piece in the "Entertainment" section featuring this photo presumed to be of the impresario behind it all, J. Jolly. "Dr. Killer Hertz" will speak to "Space Spirits" (courtesy News-Gazette). There is also this advertisement for the event: Courtesy News-Gazette. That's all the story you need for now. Jolly old England! The Vikings steal a win away from the Browns in London. Let's talk about it. #SKOL
Christmas Eve is supposed to be magical—a night filled with joy, anticipation, and holiday wonder. But for one teenager, it became something far darker. This true story of a haunted Christmas begins with a simple tradition: sleeping by the warm glow of the wood stove on an air mattress. But in the middle of the night, the sound of footsteps echoed across the ceramic floor—footsteps that moved slowly, deliberately… and then disappeared back upstairs. The next morning, when he asked his parents who had come downstairs, they were baffled. Neither of them had left their beds. There was no explanation, no prank, no reason anyone should have been in the room with him. To this day, they all swear it wasn't them. Was it the lingering spirit of someone tied to the house? Was it a phantom Santa—an entity born from collective belief and holiday energy? Or was it something much darker, cloaked in the season's disguise? #trueghoststory #hauntedhouse #realhaunting #ghostcaughtoncamera #scarychristmas #santaghost #realghoststories #creepystory #holidayhaunting #trueparanormal Love real ghost stories?
