In episode 078 of Sonitotum with Matthew Wayne Selznick, the focus is on the balance between taking things in and acting on what you've absorbed. When is it okay to not be writing / creating? Why is that alleged downtime actually essential to the entire creative process? This episode was recorded on April 3rd, 2023. It took three hours and thirty-five minutes to record, edit, produce and mix down the audio, create and upload the MP3 files, create, render, and upload the YouTube edition, write the show notes, and schedule the episode for release. Links and Topics Mentioned in This Episode My day job? I'm a creative services provider helping authors, podcasters and other creators. How can I help you? Did you miss the conversation with author Rhiannon Held? The sponge meme mentioned is from this Scribtotum article. My exploration of Obsidian, a knowledge management application, continues. It just might fit the bill as coming close as possible to my idea of the perfect software for fiction writers. No, not this kind of sponge. Listener feedback this episode comes from Multiversalist Member Patron Amy Bowen. She mentions NaNoWriMo, or National Novel Writing Month. Scrivener, a popular software application for writers, is mentioned. Also mentioned is the excellent mind-mapping application Mindomo. Shadow of the Outsider is my current work-in-progress, the follow-up to my latest novel Light of the Outsider and my latest novelette, "The Perfumed Air at Kwaanantag Bay." Hey! Did you know you can also listen and subscribe to Sonitotum with Matthew Wayne Selznick on YouTube? Next episode will feature a conversation with the speculative playwright Monica Cross. Episode 077 of Sonitotum with Matthew Wayne Selznick features an interview with author Rhiannon (R. Z.) Held. Rhiannon Held is the author of the Silver series of urban fantasy novels published by Tor. As R. Z. Held, she writes the Amsterdam Institute series of space opera novellas. Her short fiction, also under R. Z. Held, appears in Beneath Ceaseless Skies, Hybrid Fiction, and a number of other publications and anthologies. Rhiannon lives near Seattle, where she works as an archaeologist for an environmental compliance firm. At work, she mostly uses her degree for copy-editing technical reports; in writing, she uses it for cultural world-building; in public, she'll probably use it to check the mold seams on the wine bottle at dinner. Our conversation goes deep on... cultural worldbuilding deep time in fiction touching people through our stories balancing writing from the heart and following genre tropes reaching new readers the benefits of walking and "buffer zones" between our working and writing life... ...and a whole lot more. This one is chock full of good stuff. Listen! This episode was recorded on March 27th, 2023. The conversation with Rhiannon Held was recorded on January 22nd, 2023. Links and Topics Mentioned in This Episode My day job? I'm a creative services provider helping authors, podcasters and other creators. How can I help you? Rhiannon mentions LARPing. That stands for Live Action Role Playing. Here's a little more about LARPs. Rhiannon also mentioned play-by-email role playing games... a modern(ish) version of play-by-mail games that started in the 1970s. Personal creative franchises (storyworlds) come up a lot on this show. In this episode, I mentioned Michael Moorcock's Eternal Champion, Stephen King's loosely interconnected Prime Earth, and Edgar Rice Burroughs' Pellucidar. Rhiannon mentions Chaco Culture and Mesa Verde. I bring up Kevin J. Anderson's walking / dictation routine. What is walking meditation? Rhiannon mentions NaNoWriMo, or National Novel Writing Month. Here is the episode where I reveal my proposal for fixing the Amazon bookstore. Rhiannon mentions the DARE program, which, surprisingly, is still a thing. A car-cast edition of Sonitotum with Matthew Wayne Selznick, episode 076 presents another possibly audacious proposal as a... means... to acquire the financial means to have the time and energy to engage in major creative projects in an all-out approach, rather than in bits and pieces as opportunity allows. Also: listener feedback! This episode was recorded on March 20th, 2023. Links and Topics Mentioned in This Episode My day job? I'm a creative services provider helping authors, podcasters and other creators. How can I help you? Did you miss last episode's in-depth conversation with author Joyce Reynolds-Ward? Check it out! Obsidian.md is a knowledge management application that works almost any way you want it. I'm investigating it as a possible platform to serve as my perfect / ideal software for creative writing -- a subject I went deep on in this episode of Sonitotum. Creator and developer Chrispian H. Burks offered excellent feedback and perspective on the feasibility of developing my dream writing software from whole cloth. He's also been a friend and fan for pretty much ever, so cheers, pal! Reader community member Brian reached out about Hazy Days and Cloudy Nights: "How It All Got Started," and really inspired this episode. Thanks, Brian! Brian -- like not a few members of my reader community over the years -- is keenly interested in an official audiobook for the canonical edition of my first novel, Brave Men Run -- A Novel of the Sovereign Era. The only Sovereign Era audiobook available so far is for my short story "The World Revolves Around You." One of the ongoing works in progress that might get a real speed boost from my proposal is Shadow of the Outsider, the next volume of my Shaper's World cycle, which so far includes the novel Light of the Outsider and the novelette "The Perfumed Air at Kwaanantag Bay." I mentioned the Scribtotum article in which I discuss the difference between systems and goals -- and the benefits of the former over the latter. The last time I did anything like a crowdfunding campaign, I kept it simple, I kept it small, and I rolled my own. You can read all about it in this Scribtotum article. This episode features some listener feedback from Multiversalist member patron Amelia Bowen. Thanks, Amy! Next episode features an interview with urban fantasy author Rhiannon Held. In episode 069 of Sonitotum with Matthew Wayne Selznick: A big announcement about a new feature coming to the podcast, plus a detailed overview of how I go about creating realistic and meaningful fictional characters. Authors and writers will find something of value there (or at least get some validation!) and consumers of fiction will enjoy a behind-the-scenes peek at the creative writing process. This episode was recorded on January 30th, 2023. Links and Topics Mentioned in This Episode My day job? I'm a creative services provider helping authors, podcasters and other creators. How can I help you? Since the last episode, Rhiannon Held, Anthony Eichenlaub, Krista Walsh, Jeffery E. Doherty, Celia Lake, and Debra Parmley have joined P. A. Cornell, Joyce Reynolds-Ward and Monica Cross in recording interviews for future episodes of Sonitotum. These were great conversations I can't wait to share with you... meanwhile, check out their works via the links on their names! Are you a writer or author interested in being a guest? Inquire! I love, love, love Godzilla movies, but I'll be the very first to admit they are mostly not character-driven works of narrative fiction. And that's okay for them... but I believe as authors we should strive for more. One of the best examples in my own work of a character's internal conflict mirroring the conflict of the plot is my short story "Reggie vs. Kaiju Storm Chimera Wolf." In discussing character development, I talk about the main character of Shadow of the Outsider, the follow up to my novel Light of the Outsider and the follow-up novelette "The Perfumed Air at Kwaanantag Bay." Behind the Mic with Rhiannon Held (author of Silver)
Rhiannon Held is author of the SILVER series, an urban fantasy series about werewolves from Tor. In her day job she works as a professional archaeologist. Unfortunately, given that it's real rather than fictional archaeology, fedoras, bullwhips, aliens, and dinosaurs are in short supply. Most of her work is done on the computer, using databases to organize data, and graphics programs to illustrate it.In REFLECTED, the third book of the series that began with her debut novel, SILVER, Rhiannon Held continues the secret lives of the werewolf packs that live and hunt alongside human society. Silver and her mate Andrew Dare are pack leaders of the entire North American werewolf population, and that makes the more traditional packs in Europe very nervous indeed. In book 2 of the series, TARNISHED, Andrew Dare finds his mate in Silver, but they haven't found the pack they can call home. Andrew has baggage—his violent history with the packs of Spain and the rumors of his lack of control. And then there's Silver—the werewolf who has lost her wild self to a monster's assault, and who can no longer shift forms. In SILVER, Andrew Dare is a werewolf. He's the enforcer for the Roanoke pack, and responsible for capturing or killing any Were intruders in Roanoke's territory. But the lone Were he's tracking doesn't smell or act like anyone he's ever encountered. And when he catches her, it doesn't get any better. She's beautiful, she's crazy, and someone has tortured her by injecting silver into her veins. Silver represents a terrible threat to every Were on the continent.
