In this week's episode, we chat with Rex about being a mean satyr, the role of persuasion and compulsion in TTRPGs and LARP, and how to step out of your players' ways and let them tell their own stories. This conversation might actually have convinced Jake and Reilly to start getting into LARP. Jake is very concerned about whether you still get to sleep on a comfortable mattress, though.Rex is telling us about the Gothic LARP system. The two currently-active theatres are Luisant and Runeheim. For a picture of Rex's sword, check out our website. This week's PC intro comes from Jake - not host Jake, nor Season 1 guest Jake, but a completely separate Jake. We apologize for the confusion and commit to a moratorium on future Jakes on this podcast.

Lyhenne LARP tulee englannin kielen sanoista Live Action Role Playing, eli liveroolipelaaminen. Bob sees a shooting star growing unusually bright, until it resolves into a disc-shaped machine with lights around the edges. He finds himself levitated up into the machine, gets poked and prodded by the creatures inside for a while, and then set back down on the road. Assuming Bob is a rational, rationalist, well-adjusted kind of guy, he now has a problem. Almost nobody in his life is going to believe a word of this. From Bob's perspective, what happened? He might not be certain aliens are real (maybe he's just had a schizophrenic break, or someone slipped him some interesting drugs in his coffee) but he has to be putting a substantially higher percentage on the idea. Sure, maybe he hallucinated the whole thing, but most of us don't have psychotic breaks on an average day. Break out Bayes. What are Bob's new odds aliens abduct people, given that his experiences? Let's say his prior probability on alien abductions being real was 1%, about one in a hundred. (That's P(A).) Karl Schroeder is a science fiction author and foresight analyst.  His fiction is known for both its scientific rigour and its visionary quality of bearing witness to what we can expect just around the corner – especially with his latest book 'Stealing Worlds'.  This book is jam packed with big ideas about artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual reality (VR).  We talk about the creation of LARPing worlds, i.e. Live Action Role Playing games within a virtual reality which can exist on top of and in parallel with the regular world.  We also discuss more sophisticated versions of this called frame worlds, which have their own independent but virtually embedded economies.  We chat about the oligarchic systems within our neoliberal catastrophe, think about invoking consensual hallucinations that are even better than money, and imagine how choosing your technology layer can translate to choosing your reality. We also discuss artificial intelligences that think they are eagles, or forests, and how to get them to act independently on behalf of beings who have not been able to represent themselves economically or politically - til now. S6E6 Democracy, Free Speech, and the Tolerance Paradox; Unraveling the Threads of Modern Democratic Dilemmas

ChrisCast

In this pivotal episode of "The Chris Abraham Show," Chris delves deep into the complexities of free speech in modern democratic societies. Taking listeners on a journey from college campuses to the streets of America, he examines the challenges and controversies that surround the idea of a "safe space" for all voices, including those deemed dangerous or distasteful. Chris begins by highlighting his experiences at George Washington University (GW) during the late 80s. He paints a vivid picture of a campus teeming with dynamic tension between different cultural groups, particularly Jewish Americans and wealthy Middle Eastern students. This backdrop serves as a starting point for a broader discussion about the necessity for challenging dialogues in higher education institutions and the societal implications of curbing such discussions. Building on this foundation, Chris then dives into the broader societal discourse surrounding the concept of tolerance and the potential dangers of unchecked acceptance. Utilizing the paradox of tolerance posited by Karl Popper, Chris challenges listeners to consider whether unbridled freedom of speech could ultimately spell the downfall of democratic societies. The episode further explores the nuanced use of symbols and signifiers by different groups as a means of covert communication and identity formation. Drawing parallels between the gay community and Neo-Nazis, Chris underscores the power of these hidden codes and the role they play in group dynamics and societal perceptions. However, the show doesn't shy away from the darker aspects of free speech. With a keen focus on the potential for speech to provoke violence and societal unrest, Chris navigates the murky waters of when and where speech should be limited, referencing landmark legal decisions in the U.S. Before wrapping up, Chris takes a critical look at the role of government and security agencies in shaping societal discourse. He raises provocative questions about surveillance, government overreach, and the implications of creating a narrative of danger for civil liberties. FAQs: What is the "paradox of tolerance" that Chris references? This is a concept introduced by philosopher Karl Popper which suggests that if a society is overly tolerant without limit, its ability to be tolerant will eventually be seized or destroyed by the intolerant. How does GW University tie into the broader theme of the episode? Chris uses his personal experiences at GW as a microcosm to reflect on the larger societal implications of free speech, cultural tensions, and the idea of "safe spaces." Why are symbols and signifiers mentioned? Chris emphasizes the covert power of symbols and signifiers in different groups, highlighting their role in communication, identity formation, and societal perceptions. Glossary of Terms: Paradox of Tolerance: A concept by philosopher Karl Popper that warns against unlimited tolerance, as it might lead to the suppression of tolerance by the intolerant. Neo-Nazis: A post-World War II far-right movement that seeks to revive and implement the ideologies associated with Nazism. Signifiers: Symbols, signs, or gestures used to convey a particular meaning or message, especially within specific groups or communities. First Amendment: Part of the U.S. Constitution that protects freedoms of speech, religion, press, assembly, and petition. Doc Martins: A brand of boots and shoes, often associated with various subcultures, including punks, skinheads, and Neo-Nazis. Larping: Short for "Live Action Role-Playing." It is a type of game where participants act out their characters' actions, and it's often done in costumes. Chris uses it metaphorically to describe certain behaviors. Hugo Boss: A German luxury fashion house. Mentioned here in reference to its historical connection with producing black SS uniforms during the Nazi era. Canary in the coal mine: An early warning or advance indicator of potential trouble. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/chrisabraham/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/chrisabraham/support

In the latest episode of "The Chris Abraham Show," Chris delves deep into topics ranging from personal identity, societal norms, to the role of technology in shaping our reality. With a rich tapestry of perspectives and anecdotes, Chris challenges listeners to reflect upon the profound implications of our beliefs, actions, and the words we use daily. 1. Dysphoria and Personal Identity: Chris shares a heartfelt account of his own struggles with self-perception concerning age, health, life achievements, and more. He introduces terms like "dysphoria" and "dysmorphia," highlighting the discomfort or disconnect between personal perception and reality. This theme underpins the broader discussion about societal norms and the challenges we all face in self-acceptance. 2. Technology's Role in Shaping Reality: Drawing a vivid parallel, Chris describes platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram as "spell casting systems." The core idea is that what we post online—opinions, photos, reactions—plays an influential role in shaping narratives and affecting the broader audience. 3. The Concept of Consensus Reality: One of the most philosophical segments in the episode revolves around "consensus reality." Chris posits that our shared beliefs, thoughts, and actions give form to this reality. Our influence is vast and extends beyond personal interactions to the content we produce and consume. 4. The Power of Words and Thoughts: Chris warns listeners about the far-reaching implications of what they "speak into the world." This discussion underscores the influence of words and thoughts in shaping not only individual lives but also the collective consciousness. 5. Wisdom in Simplicity: Quoting David Foster Wallace, Chris speaks to the profoundness found in seemingly generic advice. This segment reminds listeners that even the most straightforward wisdom can have deep impacts and shouldn't be dismissed. Background & References: David Foster Wallace: An influential American writer known for his introspective and critical writings. Chris references him to emphasize the deep meaning that can be found in seemingly simple advice. Renaissance Weekend: An invitation-only event that brings together innovators from diverse fields. Chris recalls his experiences and interactions at this event. Glossary: Dysphoria: A state of unease or dissatisfaction with life; in this context, Chris uses it to describe feelings of discomfort with aspects of oneself. Dysmorphia: A condition where one has a distorted view of one's appearance or body; Chris describes it in terms of his own perceptions about age and health. Consensus Reality: The agreed-upon concepts of reality that people in a society believe in, even when they are demonstrably wrong. Larping: Short for "Live Action Role-Playing." It's a type of game where participants physically act out their characters' actions. Spell Casting Systems: Chris' metaphorical description for social media platforms where users "cast spells" in the form of posts, influencing and shaping reality. This episode of "The Chris Abraham Show" offers a multifaceted exploration of our perceptions, beliefs, and the roles technology and society play in shaping them. With personal anecdotes, philosophical reflections, and critical observations, Chris prompts listeners to introspect and become more conscious of their influence on the world. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/chrisabraham/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/chrisabraham/support

Sonitotum with Matthew Wayne Selznick

Episode 077 of Sonitotum with Matthew Wayne Selznick features an interview with author Rhiannon (R. Z.) Held. Rhiannon Held is the author of the Silver series of urban fantasy novels published by Tor. As R. Z. Held, she writes the Amsterdam Institute series of space opera novellas. Her short fiction, also under R. Z. Held, appears in Beneath Ceaseless Skies, Hybrid Fiction, and a number of other publications and anthologies. Rhiannon lives near Seattle, where she works as an archaeologist for an environmental compliance firm. At work, she mostly uses her degree for copy-editing technical reports; in writing, she uses it for cultural world-building; in public, she'll probably use it to check the mold seams on the wine bottle at dinner. Our conversation goes deep on... cultural worldbuilding deep time in fiction touching people through our stories balancing writing from the heart and following genre tropes reaching new readers the benefits of walking and "buffer zones" between our working and writing life... ...and a whole lot more. This one is chock full of good stuff.  Listen! This episode was recorded on March 27th, 2023. The conversation with Rhiannon Held was recorded on January 22nd, 2023. Links and Topics Mentioned in This Episode My day job? I'm a creative services provider helping authors, podcasters and other creators. How can I help you? Rhiannon mentions LARPing. That stands for Live Action Role Playing. Here's a little more about LARPs. Rhiannon also mentioned play-by-email role playing games... a modern(ish) version of play-by-mail games that started in the 1970s. Personal creative franchises (storyworlds) come up a lot on this show. In this episode, I mentioned Michael Moorcock's Eternal Champion, Stephen King's loosely interconnected Prime Earth, and Edgar Rice Burroughs' Pellucidar. Rhiannon mentions Chaco Culture and Mesa Verde. I bring up Kevin J. Anderson's walking / dictation routine. What is walking meditation? Rhiannon mentions NaNoWriMo, or National Novel Writing Month. Here is the episode where I reveal my proposal for fixing the Amazon bookstore. Rhiannon mentions the DARE program, which, surprisingly, is still a thing. Are there taboos players observe even though they're acting our a fictional scenario? As both a player and a researcher, Milon gives us insight into the strange and fascinating intricacies of religious LARPing.

Games People Play - LARP & Gaming as Social Therapy  Not everyone is a gamer, but in the last couple of decades, role-playing games have become more commonly well-known enough to where at least most people have at least heard of them somewhat, or even have a few friends who play. Also, the societal stigma against gaming and gamers has lessened and softened significantly, which helps. Role-playing games, specifically, involve play that requires the player to portray someone else, and there are an enormous variety of traits and aspects of characters that one could pretend to be.  What does this have to do with mental health therapy, you may ask? Most role-playing games, and especially LARPs or Live Action Role Playing games, often encourage players to be detailed about their fictional character, as if one were creating an entire story or a movie character. Having to do this process can involve detailed examination and analysis of motives, cultures, behaviors, society, and many other aspects we might take for granted, such as physical bodies, family structure, environment, etc.  Tonight, we will discuss: 1.    Understanding Roleplaying Games, Structure, and Character Creation 2.    Similarities to “Method Acting” as well as Social Therapy 3.    Some Issues with Gaming for Processing Reality 4.    Conclusions, Closing Remarks, & Final Suggestions  We'll start off the evening with some topic-relevant Classic Rock played by Dr. Mathis, followed by Classic Rock trivia in "The Rock & Roll Shrink Recalls," followed by our topic discussion.

Its been a couple busy weeks since the recording of this episode.  It was recorded the week before Saul and Jolene went to Kublacon a gaming convention in Northern California.  It was a very well attended convention post Covid shutdowns.   So the getting ready for that convention delayed getting this episode edited and published.    Jolene and Saul have mentioned Vampire many times in previous episodes of this podcast.  Jolene thought it would be a good subject to discuss on the podcast and deserved it's very own episode.  Though Saul never has played Vampire he has played Werewolf twice, which shares the same game world and system as Vampire.     Though they have never played Vampire Saul and Jolene realize the impact that Vampire and the rest of the World of Darkness games have had in the world of RPGs.  With is gritty "Punk Gothic" themes Vampire hit the RPG world by storm.  Not only selling very well but also being very impactful to the Live Action Roleplaying scene.      Thank you all for listening and all we ask is that you share our podcast with friends and family.      Episode art by Michael Shean-Jones       Hosting Page art  by Jim Foster     Music by Vitne,  song Masquerade, off the album Jupiter.   Available from Tribeofnoise.com

In this episode, we're chatting about the weird things Olivia is seeing on the dating apps, including men openly sharing on their profiles that they've been snipped or refusing to list their job. Plus, what's this whole "breadcrumbing" thing? Is it just a fancy way of saying you're leading someone on? And while we decide breadcrumbing is crappy, is it worse than someone asking you out for a date last minute? In Amy's famous words... It depends!! And it's probably just easier to have a friend who will drop everything to get ice cream with you anyway. Olivia goes on a date with a Harry Potter fan (in the spirit of "What Would Ashley & Amy Do?") and let's be clear that there's a firm line here that doesn't go to the level of Live Action Role Playing. Things we're less clear about? What the hell someone of these new Gen Z words and phrases really mean. And since Olivia is still a little salty about being called cheugy in the last episode, she's hitting Ashley and Amy with the Gen Z Word Game. For every term you don't get correct, that's a drink. Draking? Capping? Wig?? Might as well just pour two right away, folks. --- What is Shots & Thoughts? We're three 30-somethings hosting a podcast about dating, relationships, and life in general. My guest this week wears a lot of hats, and occasionally frocks. Lewis Bartlett is a bee scientist, baker, and drag queen who found his way from Yorkshire, England to Athens, Georgia. A shy, nerdy kid, he found refuge in Lord of the Rings novels and Live Action Role-Playing (or LARPing) groups, but he reached a turning point where he decided to give all that up, along with years-long friendships, so that he could pursue the studies that eventually led him to become, as he says, a professional bee botherer. But as an adult the old nerdy pastimes of his youth have come back to him in unexpected ways, such as his observation that bees are the ultimate World of Warcraft players. We'll have that conversation in a minute. First a quick thanks to everyone who supports the Sewers of Paris on Patreon. And! Jordan Downey is the writer/director of The Head Hunter, one of my favorite horror movies of 2018, and now streaming on Shudder. One of the remarkable things about The Head Hunter was how resourceful it was. Considering the fact that it was an ultra low budget movie, it is extremely ambitious in terms of scope, and world-building, but while still portraying a tightly structured and intimate story about a medieval monster hunter. This is a pretty fascinating balance that Jordan pulled off and one worth studying. Everyone says your first movie should not be a period piece, should not have elaborate effects, and certainly should not include horses. Jordan did all 3 in The Head Hunter, and still kept the budget super duper low and delivered a kick-ass movie in the end. The Head Hunter is a serious case study for effective low budget filmmaking. Even if you've seen it,  it's really worth a re-watch for the fun of the movie, and for observing its simplicity & elegance in terms of directing and how much Jordan was able to get away with while spending so little. This was a very interesting conversation with some killer lessons in low budget filmmaking. Here as always are some key lessons from this conversation with Jordan Downey.  Think: big scale, small scope. There's a real balancing act to simultaneously building an ambitious & fantastical world while maintaining a tight focus but it can be a really a magical combination. Jordan created such a vast world of medieval warriors, monsters, and complex systems of alchemy, but the story was so elegantly simple. For a low budget movie, the world-building was extremely ambitious and it worked beautifully because the largely single character focus was so tight & stripped down. On a lot of low budget movies, directors sometimes try to go too big with their world-building and end up in that no man's land of campy. This is not where you want to be. One of the ways that Jordan was able to pull this off was by thoroughly defining the world his characters lived in well beyond what was in the script and on the screen. It may seem unnecessary to do all of this development of things that never show up on the screen, but their presence and existence are still known to the viewer. By doing this, you're able to create a world that lives and breathes beyond the seams of the movie, and the audience can always tell. It's a funny, subconscious thing but it's absolutely true With a low budget, high concept, your high concept needs to work and this is by developing it and understanding everything you can about the world your characters are living in. Freaks & The Endless also do a great job of executing a highly ambitious amount of world-building on a tight budget.   There really is no excuse. $4 grand. That's what Jordan's first movie, Thankilling cost - and it was a feature! The movie was picked up by a reputable distribution company called Veritas Ventures and paved the way for his next movie. So, a recurring theme I've seen in speaking to directors is that you're never really supposed to have enough money, to do anything. You are not supposed to have a smooth production. Ever. The job of directing is to overcome every single conceivable challenge and obstacle and make the movie despite your circumstances, not because of them. 4 grand. Easily acquired with credit card debt. As Jordan and many directors before him have said. It really is a matter of just doing it.   Give people their first chance. On The Head Hunter, Jordan got a killer costume designer who was able to deliver way above the budget of the movie, substantially boosting the believability of this world and therefore the production value. The interesting thing was that this costume designer had never done a movie before, but had perfected his craft by creating costumes for cosplayers and Larping - that sounds so dirty, but stands for Live Action Role Playing. This dude was exceptionally talented and was stoked by the opportunity to do a movie, so he was not only affordable but he completely over-delivered. Finding these creative win-wins that leverage the opportunity to work on your movie can really bump up your production value substantially.  In the throes of pre-production, it's easy to lose sight of the fact that making a movie is fucking cool - and so many talented people are DYING to work in film - don't feel the need to be limited to people with experience. Finding talented newcomers can bring you some fresh approaches and a ton of energy - they'll deliver, and appreciate the opportunity and their passion can move mountains on your movie. It probably goes without saying though, that it's not ok to exploit people - so if you can't afford to pay people what they're worth at the time of production, always make it up to them and make it worth their while. Either with deferred pay or by giving them a piece of the movie.    ----- Produced by Simpler Media

This is the first main episode for my StarSeed Perspective. I begin with the Daily Affirmation, and this one is special as it is a "Power Poem" that I channeled when I was in the middle of my first awakening at the age of 24. I then lead into a brief history and story section called StarSeed Experiences. Today in this section I begin my ascension journey way back when Dungeon And Dragons was "cool" and 16 bit ruled the living room. I joined a group when I was 13 years old at school that was a Live Action Role Playing group; however, their real identity was a coven. I go over the first tools and methods that started my ascension and realization that I was from Arcturus. The third portion of the cast is a reading from my participation sections in the book "Conversations With The Children Of Now" by: Dr. Meg Blackburn-Losey. This is a great book that introduces many Star Seeds that have much greater ability than I did at that time, and I was humbled as I called into a podcast on the WorldPuja network www.worldpuja.org when they were giving free call in readings from the guest reader that Dr. Meg Blackburn-Losey had on the air. From there I will introduce a new segment that I would like to use in future episodes called Apprentice Analysis & Aspects. Where a guest speaker or co-host will weigh in on their confirmations, thoughts, feelings, insights, and related experiences to the Star Seed Experience, and Reading. Tiffany discovered the possibilities of LARPing via putting on immersion theatre as the Artistic Director of Otherworld Theatre Company. After their own production of Gone Dark and attending Sleep No More in New York, she was inspired to take the interest even further by producing a series of 2-day LARPs in the Midwest called Chronicles of the Realm. Find out about the levels of experiential gaming and theatre that can be achieved as well as the work and talent it takes to plan characters and re-plan scenarios on the fly as players discover the path they want the LARP to take. Notes: Otherworld Theatre is buying their own space. Check out their IndieGoGo to contribute to the cause. Past episodes featuring themes surrounding Otherworld Theatre productions include: Vampires, Shakespeare, Pen and Paper RPGs, and Sci-Fi/Fantasy Theatre.
