Diana Powell, in 100 American Crime Writers, wrote: Cabin B-13 is the harrowing tale of a new bride who boards an ocean liner for her honeymoon only to find out the groom has disappeared and that the ship's crew doubt his existence and her sanity. Her fear over her groom's whereabouts is heightened by a threat to her inherited wealth and the stress of not being believed. Cabin B-13 was first broadcast on the American radio program Suspense on March 16, 1943, with Ralph Bellamy starring. It was broadcast again on Suspense on November 9, 1943, this time co-starring Margo and Philip Dorn. The trade publication Radio Daily reported in its December 26, 1948, issue that the play would "have its third airing over CBS Saturday, December 27" — as a standalone program rather than being broadcast as an episode of Suspense. Additionally, the article noted, "Screen executives on the West Coast will hear Cabin B-13 in a special rebroadcast over KNX, Hollywood, Saturday, January 3, 4:00-4:30 p.m. in order to weigh its screen possibilities." On September 11, 1943, Cabin B-13 was used for the premiere of the British Broadcasting Corporation program Appointment with Fear. Richard J. Hand, in his book Listen in terror: British horror radio from the advent of broadcasting to the digital age, wrote, "Carr deliberately chose Cabin B-13 [for the first episode] as he felt it was his best Suspense play and would be an effective opening for this British series in the American style."

Professor Richard J. Hand comes to the Miskatonic London to discuss the shocking history of Le Théâtre du Grand-Guignol, the smallest stage in Paris that, from 1897 to 1962, was home to some of the most daring acts. Specializing in unique ‘live horror’ the company’s productions were often inspired from real life events exaggerated to untold and bloody extremes. Audiences were left laughing, crying, vomiting or screaming (sometimes in pain, and sometimes in pleasure...). Hand discusses both the Grand-Guignol’s time operating and the profound impact its left on horror in all forms in a class that is not for the weak of heart. More info on this class can be found here. The "golden age of radio drama" may have been a stellar period for storytelling -- but the stories weren't all golden bright. Sci-fi and horror radio dramas explored deep anxieties people felt from the Depression through the Cold War, and set the stage for later stories that couldn't be told yet without special effects. Eric Molinsky of the podcast Imaginary Worlds co-hosts this episode as we hear from historians like Neil Verma and Richard J. Hand, and radio drama veterans like Dirk Maggs and Richard Toscan. Plus Emory Braswell recalls the day he thought Martians invaded New Jersey.   20K is made out of the studios of Defacto Sound and hosted by Dallas Taylor.  Sign up for Musicbed Membership music.20k.org.  Check out the SONOS Beam at sonos.com  Get a free month of Splice at splice.com/20k and enter promo code 20k.  Episode transcript, music, and credits can be found here: https://www.20k.org/episodes/theaterforthemind
