This month's guest on the Rejected Religion Podcast is Brennan Kettelle. Brennan returns for Part 2 of our discussion on Monster Theory, this time looking at the applications of Monster Theory, as well as a more in-depth look at how Brennan is using this theory, along with other related concepts and theories. Brennan is a PhD researcher at the Centre for History of Hermetic Philosophy and Related Currents (HHP), University of Amsterdam. Brennan holds an MA in Gender and Cultural studies (2016) and a research MA in Religious Studies, specializing in Western esotericism (2021). She is currenting writing her doctoral dissertation, investigating historical associations between the religiomythic demoness Lilith and queerness within artistic, literary, and occult discourses. Brennan also teaches an 8-week online course on Lilith - focusing on Lilith's origins and cultural receptions within Western esotericism - for the Brooklyn-based organization Morbid Anatomy. Utilizing monster theory and queer theory in her research, Brennan is more broadly interested in investigating themes of the ‘monstrous-queer' within esoteric literature, orders, and figures, as well as esoteric themes within queer subcultures, politics, and histories. Some highlights:Brennan's areas of exploration are primarily located in Gender Studies, Queer Theory, Religious Studies, Horror Theory, and Esotericism. In addition, as Monster Theory has a foundation in psychoanalysis and postmodern theories, Brennan expands on this in greater detail. This leads us into a conversation about the recent film, The Substance, as well as theories found in Foucault's works. Shifting the focus to Religious Studies, Brennan notes how monsters are most often aligned with evil; however, there are exceptions to this when it comes to werewolves in the Bible, for example. [Note: the text that I am reading from regarding werewolves in the Bible as well as the Werewolf Renaissance is taken from my own Research Master thesis.] Religion and Horror Studies intersect in films such as Longlegs, where we can see themes such as “monstrous infection” or a returning sickness. As Brennan states, “the monster is the illumination of everything a society oppresses or represses.”Speaking on the working term of ‘stigmatized alignment,' Brennan uses the examples of poet Renee Vivien, and “The Witch of Kings Cross” Rosaleen Norton to explain this concept in more detail. In closing, Brennan touches upon the adjacent theory of Hauntology, where past ‘monsters' linger in the present and haunt us. Time, in this instance, could be seen as a monster as well.

The acclaimed animated documentary Flee (Jonas Poher Rasmussen, 2021), which tells the story of Amin Nawabi and his journey from from Afghanistan to Denmark as a refugee, is the subject of Episode 103 of the podcast that reflects on the shared ability of animation, fantasy and the documentary format to ‘reveal.' Joining Chris and Alex for this instalment is Dr. Cristina Formenti, Assistant Professor in Film Studies at the University of Udine in Italy, and author of a number of books on animation and documentary, including Il mockumentary: la fiction si maschera da documentario (2013), and her latest book The Classical Animated Documentary and Its Contemporary Evolution (2022). Cristina is also the editor of the volumes Mariangela Melato tra cinema, teatro e televisione (2016) and Valentina Cortese: un'attrice intermediale (2019), while her work has appeared in various national and international journals, such as Studies in Documentary Film, Alphaville, and Horror Studies. She is currently the co-editor of the journal Animation Studies and serves on the Board of the Society for Animation Studies. Listen as they discuss the value of animated reconstruction, fictionalisation, and the authenticating use of live-action footage within Flee's predominantly animated aesthetic style that potentially ‘corrects' its cartoonal qualities; the role of memory and the subjectivity of experience; connections between imagination, emotion and trauma; shifts in the animated style of Jonas Poher Rasmussen's film between raw nightmarish impressionism and heightened visual detail; the ‘fable' and ‘sober' as useful ways to categorise the historical trajectory and stylistic approaches of the animated documentary; the experiential effects of subjective narration and the film's intimate interview style, and what happens when vocal recordings in the documentary have to be falsified; and how Flee offers a narrative of reconciliation that mirrors animation's own creative combination with certain recognisable documentary conventions. **Fantasy/Animation theme tune composed by Francisca Araujo**

For this special Halloween podcast Jocelyn McGregor met with Dr Maisha Wester and Dr Xavier Aldana Reyes ahead of her solo exhibition at Castlefield Gallery in 2022 to consider our changing perspectives towards horror. Thinking about the relationships between horror cinema, body horror, surrealism and McGregor's work they discuss the enduring power of horror's transgressive nature and how it might speak to or challenge our understanding of gender, race and the politics of our time. Dr Maisha Wester is a visiting lecturer at the University of Sheffield, sponsored by the British Academy's Global Professorship fellowship. Her home institution is Indiana University, Bloomington. Her research focuses on racial representation in Gothic Literature and Horror film, Black Diasporic Gothic literature, and sociopolitical appropriations of Gothic and horror tropes in racial discourses. She is the author of African American Gothic: Screams from Shadowed Places (2012), co-editor of Twenty-First-Century Gothic: An Edinburgh Companion (with Xavier Aldana Reyes, 2019) and author of numerous essays including Gothic in and as Race Theory and Nineteenth-Century British and American Gothic and the History of Slavery. She is currently at work organising the exhibition His House to Our Home as part of the Being Human festival; the project will also feature a global digital gallery of community-generated artwork. Dr Xavier Aldana Reyes is Reader in English Literature and Film at Manchester Metropolitan University and co-lead of the Manchester Centre for Gothic Studies. He is author of Body Gothic (2014), Horror Film and Affect (2016) and Gothic Cinema (2020), and editor of Horror: A Literary History (2016) and Twenty-First-Century Gothic: An Edinburgh Companion (with Maisha Wester, 2019). Xavier is chief editor of the Horror Studies academic book series published by the University of Wales Press. We're joined by film writer, programmer, producer, founder of The Miskatonic Institute of Horror Studies, and now documentarian Kier-La Janisse to talk about her new film Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror, as well as the Oct/Nov Brattle series inspired by it - Folk Horror Beyond the Wicker Man.
Jared Rivet has been making movies his entire life. Growing up in New Bedford, Massachusetts, the fishing town that served as the setting for Herman Melville's novel Moby Dick, Jared drew his early inspiration from both literary and filmic monsters; his favorite childhood films were Creepshow, Jaws, and Star Wars. From a young age, Jared wrote stories and made home movies with schoolyard friends. In high school, he joined the award-winning New Bedford High School Drama Club and played a number of high-profile roles, including the role of Victor Frankenstein in their production of Frankenstein. It's a force more powerful than 1,000 H-bombs unleashed to devastate earth! What is? Our excitement at, for the final episode of BERGCAST Season One, not only the both of us being in the same place, but getting to meet Hammer archivist and Doctor Who Magazine editor Marcus Hearn in the headquarters of the BFI no less. Marcus enlightened us on why it took so long to make a third Quatermass (but why they kept trying), and who else could have played our pal Bernard. We touch on the awkward relationship that Quatermass has with the sex/colour/blood aesthetic of Hammer Horror and Babs Windsor's bra. We hear a tale of two Roy Bakers, and muse on whether the only things violated in this movie are trade descriptions. And we talk about the power of this film, and how the juxtaposition of the prosaic and the uncanny lend it its curious power. We're taking a break for a month or so now, as we get our Martians in a line for BERGCAST Season Two, where we'll be meeting a whole new set of guests, and going to the Quatermass Conclusion... and beyond. Thanks to our lovely engineer Emma, Andrea Kinnear, Toby Hadoke and Sarah Reuben of the BFI, and also Kier-La Janisse of the Miskatonic Institute of Horror Studies, without any of whom, as the saying goes, this would not have happened.

On April 11th, 2019 we did a live podcast of Hellbent for Horror and a live reading from my book, "Screaming for Pleasure" from the legendary horror bookstore, Dark Delicacies in Burbank, CA. Special guest Heidi Honeycutt and I discuss horror, horrible/beautiful, and how we need a new "Santo and the Blue Demon" in our culture. I hope you enjoy the show! We went undercover, guys. It was awesome. We took a look at two great detective pilot TVMs: The House on Greenapple Road (1970), which would lead to the short lived series Dan August, and we also watched the second Harry-O pilot, Smile Jenny, You're Dead (1944). We felt Marion Ord's pain and we fell in love with Zalman King! We hope you enjoy! And one last mention of the Rondos (I swear!). We're up for Best Multi-Media Site, and Amanda has also been nominated for best Live Event ("Big Scares on the Small Screen" lecture for the Miskatonic Institute of Horror Studies, which was hosted by the Brooklyn Horror Film Fest), and Best Commentary (Last House on the Left). You can see all the nominations here, and you can send your ballot to taraco@aol.com. Lots of great people on that list, so we won't be mad if you want to vote for someone else. Just vote!
The Made for TV Mayhem Show was nominated for a Rondo!!! We weren't sure if we might be picking up a few listeners through that nomination, so we thought we'd get together and each suggest an episode we felt gave people a good idea of what we do. They are episodes that show us at our best... or at our least confused. Something like that. So, of course recording this was a bear. There are sound issues galore (thanks Skype for the bad reception and time lags), and choppy editing came about as I was trying to put it into something that was more coherent. Please be kind. We did this on the fly and on a day that was proving to be difficult. If you are new, welcome! If you are just listening cuz you like us... thank you so very much. We appreciate every download. Hope you enjoy! You can look at the Rondo Awards ballot at www.rondoaward.com, and you'll find our little podcast in the Best Multi-Media Site section. You can email your selections to taraco@aol.com. Amanda was nominated in three categories total. The other two are: Best Commentary: Last House on the Left (with Bill Ackerman) Top Event: ‘Big Scares on the Small Screen: A Brief History of the Made-for-TV Horror Film,’ at The Miskatonic Institute of Horror Studies, NYC Put your votes where you must! And thank you so much for checking us out or sticking with us!

Gary Rhodes talks about his new book culled from thousands of primary sources and long-unseen illustrations, The Birth of the American Horror Film. The book explores the influence of horror-themed literature, theatre and visual culture in America, and how that context established a foundation for films produced between 1895 and 1915. Exhaustively researched, bridging scholarship on Horror Studies and Early Cinema, The Birth of the American Horror Film is the first major study dedicated to this vital but often overlooked subject.

Wow, I can't believe i got this mammoth episode edited and ready for listening (well, as ready as we usually are. Expect the normal volume issues and there's a few pops and clicks as well). The gang discuss Death of a Cheerleader (1994) and Co-ed Call Girl (1996) in this Tori Twofer, and we feel our lives are better for it! We loved recording this and we all hope you enjoy listening. The one regret I have though is not mentioning that Dan's new book is out and ready to be bought. Pop on over to Amazon and grab a copy of his Action Movies on the Cheap: 284 Low Budget High Impact Pictures! Go now! We're taking April off so I can go to London and talk TV horror movies at the Miskatonic Institute of Horror Studies on May 20th at the Horse Hospital. Stop by if you are in the area and say hi! We'll be selling copies of my book, Are You in the House Alone? A TV Movie Compendium: 1964-1999. Our next episode will be a slasher-friendly double bill with Five Desperate Women (1971) and She's Dressed to Kill (1979). Check us out on tvmayhempodcast.wordpress.com if you'd like to leave feedback!
Fear is one of the six basic universal emotions (the others are anger, disgust, happiness, sadness and surprise) and like all human emotions not easy to understand. Fear can be played upon, enjoyed, conquered. It is an obstacle to progress ("the only thing to fear is fear itself") and, as we stand at the kerb, it saves our lives every day. This series of The Essay brings you five essays on different aspects of fear.Kier-La Janisse is a writer and the Founder of the Miskatonic Institute of Horror Studies, and reflects on how educational films like Dark and Lonely Water, The Finishing Line and Signal 30 have scared more children more deeply than any horror feature film, and explains how - in mid-twentieth century America - fear was exploited to create an educational film boom.Producer Laura Thomas.
An interview with Kier-La Janisse from the Miskatonic University of Horror Studies in Montreal.
