At last the Ted Kendall show! In 2022 Tyler spoke with genius sound engineer Ted Kendall about his career with an emphasis on the work he did in lovingly restoring Goon Shows to their original broadcast length and best possible quality. For a number of technical reasons this interview lay in the Goon Pod vaults for the longest time but finally it can be heard! Ted talks warmly about his career and displays a forensic knowledge of Goon-related minutiae. He worked closely with Dirk Maggs in the early nineties to bring about At Last The Go On Show and subsequent R2 & R4 seasons of fully-restored Goon Shows, but it is his work on the Goon Show Compendiums for which we fans should adopt the position and intone "We are not worthy!" A fascinating exploration of audio restoration which will enthral all radio enthusiasts.
In 1990 the airwaves were set alight with the arrival of Flywheel, Shyster & Flywheel to BBC radio. Based on material from a series of the same name broadcast on American radio in the early thirties, these modern adaptations benefited hugely from great production, excellent scripts and a highly talented cast, particularly the two lead performers Michael Roberts and Frank Lazarus, both of whom totally captured the energy and spirit of Groucho & Chico Marx, retaining their timeless character while giving them a contemporary tweak. The then up-and-coming BBC radio wunderkind Dirk Maggs (who later gained audio industry national treasure status via his collaborations with the likes of Neil Gaiman) directed the show and it ran for three series on BBC Radio 4, attracting huge listening figures and much popular acclaim. One of its biggest champions was a man who by this point in his life was critical about what he considered the state of modern comedy: Spike Milligan. Confessing to having been delighted and enchanted by the series – and coming from a huge Marx Brothers fan from whom he had drawn much inspiration this was high praise indeed – Spike was invited onto the show. The former Goon ended up appearing twice, and despite nerves seemed to relish every moment of it. This week Goon Pod has the rare honour of playing host to Dirk, Michael and Frank, who look back at the series and recall how it came about, sharing favourite moments and behind-the-scenes gossip and remembering the rather challenging circumstances in which they welcomed Spike onto the show. News of the remake was huge at the time and received international television coverage from the likes of CNN. We hear some rare clips and Frank talks about appearing on the Dick Cavett Show in an earlier iteration of Chico, while Michael explains about how ad-libbing was positively encouraged. There is also tribute paid to Mark Brisenden, the man behind the scripts, and the supporting cast including Lorelei King and Graham Hoadly, not to mention the great Dick Vosburgh, the accomplished comedy writer who did so much to revive the Marx Brothers in the seventies and eighties and who acted as consultant on FS&F. A must-listen for fans of the Marx Brothers, the Goons or great comedy in general!
Jeff and Bryan discuss Hexagonal Phase, the sixth installment of the BBC radio series. This one is based off the book ...And Another Thing by Eoin Colfer. Jeff and Bryan both agreed that this story benefitted greatly from a severe abridgement. They also give all the credit to the writer who adapted this story for radio. This has been a Froods for Thought production.

We're closing out this week of AudioFile Favorite interviews by featuring host Jo Reed's conversation with the producer, director, and writer Dirk Maggs. If you love audio theater, then you know his work — his productions immerse listeners in the worlds that he creates. In a career spanning 30 years, he's won many national and international awards. He first made a name for himself turning DC comics into audio productions, and he's a longtime collaborator with Neil Gaiman. Most recently that has resulted in three incredible audio adaptations of THE SANDMAN, Gaiman's beloved classic comic book series. Read our reviews of Dirk Maggs's audiobooks on our website. Actor, writer and director Lee Moone joins Tyler this week to talk about the history of Spike Milligan's The Phantom Raspberry Blower Of Old London Town and how he brought it to the stage in 2015 with 'Guest Phantoms' Jon Culshaw, Danny Baker and John Challis. Following on from last week's chat with Joel Morris, Lee and Tyler look at the genesis of the original script and dig a bit deeper into its intended purpose: to be a one hour television special for Milligan, Sellers and Secombe that never came off. They talk about its subsequent seventies versions with Ronnie Barker solo and then, more famously, as part of The Two Ronnies. Lee tells Tyler how challenging it was adapting the script for the stage production. The biggest obstacle to its success would have been the non-cooperation of Norma Farnes, Milligan's agent, but thankfully she was supportive of the project and gave it her blessing. A major turning point was enlisting the services of Dirk Maggs as director and with him on board it all began to come together. Lee explains how it could have gone on with an extended series of shows but various factors conspired to prevent this happening - however, Lee is hoping to bring the show back. It's a great conversation with a really interesting guy and we wish Lee all the best in his endeavours to revive the show and keep alive the memory of The Phantom Raspberry Blower Of Old London Town!

Actor Jeffrey Holland is best known for his role as Spike Dixon, the third rate camp comic in the popular BBC sitcom Hi-De-Hi! but he is of particular interest to this podcast as he took on the rather daunting task of performing Peter Sellers' characters in the much-acclaimed 2001 show Goon Again, alongside Andrew Secombe, Jon Glover and Christopher Timothy and produced by friend of the show Dirk Maggs. Tyler and Jeffrey discuss that show and what the Goons mean to him, as well as running through his career in general - as well as Hi-De-Hi! they talk about You Rang M'Lord (and why it's so popular in Hungary), Are You Being Served, It Ain't Half Hot Mum and Dad's Army. Jeffrey was a delight and very generous with his time - hope you enjoy the show.
The award-winning master of spoken word audio, this week's guest is the endlessly entertaining Dirk Maggs. Dirk has been overseeing the production of The Sandman: Act III, the latest in a long line of collaborations with Neil Gaiman. He was first introduced to Neil via a mutual friend at DC Comics, as Dirk had been involved in audio productions of The Adventures of Superman, Batman: The Lazarus Syndrome and other projects and it was also due to the DC connection that Dirk met Douglas Adams and so began the protracted process of bringing The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy 'back home to BBC Radio' as Adams put it. Dirk has also produced adaptations of Agatha Christie, Stephen King and Arthur C Clarke works. But it is for his work in comedy that we are focusing on this week - Dirk devised and produced At Last The Go On Show in 1991 to mark the 40th anniversary of The Goon Show; he later was the brains behind Goon Again in 2001, a special one-off restaging of The Goon Show starring Jeffrey Holland, Andrew Secombe, Jon Glover and Christopher Timothy ('a genetically-engineered tribute band' was how he described it). We also talk about his early break in BBC Radio comedy producing The News Huddlines and shows such as The Long Hot Satsuma starring Graeme Garden and Barry Cryer, and later programmes like Inside Sasha and Flywheel, Shyster & Flywheel which introduced The Marx Brothers to new generations. It's a terrific conversation about a wide-ranging and never-dull career. More on Dirk here: www.dirkmaggs.com
Our Behind the Scenes guest this time is a composer, pianist and music director who has enjoyed a 40 year award winning career working with the most famous performers and conducting some of the biggest orchestras in the world. Mike Dixon has helped launch many of the great modern productions in the West End and on Broadway. He is the go-to-guy for Dame Shirley Bassey, Lionel Richie, Sir Tom Jones, in fact it's probably quicker to list those who don't have him on speed dial. He's also worked with a raft of high-profile comic names including Bradley Walsh, Dirk Maggs, Joe Pasquale, Ben Elton and Paul O'Grady. On TV he regularly appears in front of a global audience of billions and he's just written his eagerly awaited autobiography, a fascinating look behind the scenes of the music industry, published on 28 June 2022, “Turn Around and Take a Bow!”. https://www.troubador.co.uk/bookshop/autobiography/turn-around-and-take-a-bow-hb/ https://www.mikedixonmusic.com/ Steam, Smoke & Mirrors Theme music composed by John Orchard and arranged by Ian English Support the podcast by becoming a Patron: https://www.patreon.com/BEHINDTHESCENESWITHCOLINEDMONDS Facebook: colin.edmonds.73 Instagram: colinedmondsssm Twitter:@ColinEdmondsSSM Website: https://www.steamsmokeandmirrors.com/ Buy Steam, Smoke and Mirrors Available at Caffeine Nights Available at Amazon Available on Audible Buy The Lazarus Curiosity: Steam, Smoke and Mirrors 2 Available at Caffeine Nights Available at Amazon Available on Audible Buy The Nostradamus Curiosity: Steam, Smoke and Mirrors 3 Available at Caffeine Nights Available at Amazon
We talk to Dirk Maggs - Audio Director, Producer & Writer. During his amazing career Dirk has worked with the BBC creating award-winning comic adaptations of Superman, Batman, Spider-Man and Judge Dredd. After being personally invited by Douglas Adams he created the hugely successful mid 2000's radio return of The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy and most recently The New York Times #1 Bestselling audio adaptation of Neil Gaiman's comic series The Sandman. We cover all of this along with tales of growing up, his love of music and in particular playing the drums, along with great insights into bringing the unreleased script of Alien III to life and his amazing friendship with Queen's Brian May.This episode is brought to you by our friends Dead Skull Coffee. https://deadskullcoffee.co.uk/discount/STVPlease visit The Straight To Video Patreon Page to find out how you can help grow this show. https://www.patreon.com/stvpod

Dirk Maggs is the genius behind the audio adaptations of stories such as The Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy, The X Files, the William Gibson Alien 3 adaptation - and of course, Neil Gaiman's The Sandman, which has been a huge (and well deserved) hit on Audible. We talk to Dirk to find out how he forged this career, and learn that he in effect created the idea of these “audio movies” (as he calls them) from scratch. From starting out at the BBC to working with Douglas Adams on the Hitchhiker's Guide adaptation, right up to hearing about how he adapted the supposedly “impossible to adapt” The Sandman into such a brilliant production. Along the way, he gives us great hints and tips on writing for audio, and also drops in some great anecdotes about the likes of Adam West and James McAvoy!(We highly recommend listening to the whole episode, but The Sandman stuff starts at about 66 minutes!)Links:Listen to The Sandman on AudibleAnd all his other amazing Audio Movies!Visit Dirk's websiteFollow Dirk on TwitterWatch our video panel Page One Sessions as we discuss writing with great authors: https://youtu.be/gmE6iCDYn-sThe Page One Podcast is brought to you by Write Gear, creators of Page One - the Writer's Notebook. WARNING! At this point we have given up any pretense that this podcast might ever be anything but NSFW! This week our heroes discuss the Audible "Audiobook" adaptation of Alien 3 by William Gibson. They find out way too late that they've been ASMRed into yet another Dirk Maggs production. The guys get right into spoilers for this several years old audio production, and are not happy about it. They discuss Gibson's impact on the sci-fi genre, and why this offering is weak as hell, and who is to blame (surprise, the conclusion is Dirk Maggs). The brothers share their incompetence and lack of knowledge about the Alien franchise as a whole. Rance skirts around his dislike for multiple entries in the franchise, and Bob blows his mind with a theory about the Aliens series and it's meaning as a whole. As usual, it has to do with something naughty, and general disdain for parenthood. The episode finishes up with some conversations about some stuff, but why are you still reading this? Go listen to the dang episode. P.S. School is coming. It's not the end of the world, but if someone else says "The new normal" everyone gonna flip shit. *************************************** THIS WEEK'S BOOK: Alien 3 By William Gibson, Directed by Dirk Maggs Find it here:https://www.audible.com/pd/Alien-III-Audiobook/B07QY3KR81 THIS EPISODE’S MUSIC: Our theme music is: “First Strike” Music by: Jacob Lizotte. WARNING! This is assuredly NSFW! This week our heroes discuss the second half of the Audible "Audiobook" adaptation of DC/Vertigo classic, The Sandman, by Neil Gaiman and Dirk Maggs. The guys are once again joined by resident Gaiman expert and sibling, Lithia. The group don't disagree this week, and come to the conclusion that the conclusion of this book should perhaps never have been produced. There's much less sibling arguing and much more collective yelling at the book, it's creators, and our stream audience. Our trio have no idea what to do most of the episode, as they're stumped (or at least Rance and Lithia are stumped) as to how this adaptation went from smooth to rough to RUFF RUFF between last reading and this one. Rance hammers on the fake Sandman theme a lot, Lithia watches a beloved franchise get farted on, and yes, Bob falls out of his chair. Is it shock? Surprise? Maybe just plain stupidity. Maybe all three! Tune in and find out. Finally, the gang have a blast recreating the audiobook's most outstanding feature. Disgusting ASMR style sequences of eating, drinking, and other... content. P.S. Thanks for joining us. It gives us immense joy to bring to you our first branded content episode in association with DC Comics, Audible, and Comic Con India. Our interview with Dirk Maggs, The Director of "The Sandman" Audiobook based on the best selling Neil Gaiman's comic book. The title is currently #1 on The New York Times bestseller list for weeks now. Devour!
WARNING! Probably a majority NSFW! (Due to the nature of this week's recording, there may be a few minor audio glitches. We're working on improving our recording methodology. We're sorry for any issues. Please enjoy the episode!) This week our heroes discuss the Audible "Audiobook" adaptation of DC/Vertigo classic, The Sandman, by Neil Gaiman and Dirk Maggs. They also invite their sister from the Same Mother, Sandman aficionado, Lithia. The group discuss various disagreements and agreements about what may possibly be one of the most overproduced pieces of content Audible has ever spewed forth. Our hosts get mad at each other for multiple reasons, because what else are siblings good for? Bob and Rance both act like content hogs, and speak over and interrupt their guest multiple times, but manage to keep the "well actually-ing" to a minimum. Bob hates the book, and makes no qualms about sharing that information, even though he can't really give a solid reason why. Rance praises the book, and makes no qualms about sharing that information, even though he can't really give a solid reason why. Lithia fangirls out about the book, and makes no qualms about being disgusted that she came from the same womb as Rance and Bob, even though the universe has no solid reason why. At the end of the day, everyone is just happy that Lith's husband decides to make a cameo because he wants his cold brew coffee, dammit. P.S. You rock. Keep going. You got this. *************************************** THIS WEEK'S BOOK: The Sandman By Neil Gaiman and Dirk Maggs Find it here:https://www.audible.com/pd/The-Sandman-Audiobook/B086WP794Z?ref=mrq_aud_sndmn_pser1&source_code=MRQOR13307142003UG&device=d&&cvosrc=ppc.google.the%20sandman%20audio&cvo_campaign=1859944452&cvo_crid=449246324770&Matchtype=e&gclid=CjwKCAjwps75BRAcEiwAEiACMWONGm6uyZR6j9vAweWUjZs-1mVoiZkAYh1Cq_eYENOcgdGIyDSS8xoCOW4QAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds THIS EPISODE’S MUSIC: Our theme music is: “First Strike” Music by: Jacob Lizotte. Matthew Layton presents Studio 1 - Vision Australia Radio's weekly look at life from a low vision and blind point of view. On this week's show… Matthew has ironed a shirt! That's because both of his guests are of a very high calibre. The first guest is Minister for Communications Cyber Safety and The Arts, Paul Fletcher MP who has come to Studio 1 to talk about Audio Description on SBS and the ABC. But this being Studio 1, the conversation covers topics as diverse as community radio, Marvel films and Peppa Pig. Then, for a bit of context, accessible technology expert David Woodbridge, the presenter of Vision Australia Radio's most listened to programme Talking Tech. David gives us his views on Audio Description, then Matthew sidetracks him into talking about audiobooks and Star Trek amongst other things. Matthew will return next week to ask the question “How The Devil are YOU?” Yes! You. You there! How have “these troubled times” affected your life. James McAvoy leads an all-star cast in narrating the audio adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s iconic graphic novel series. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile’s Robin Whitten discuss this AudioFile Earphones winner, which is full of dark humor, horror, fantasy, satire, and mythology. It’s a total tour de force with a cinematic score, fitting for the epic story. McAvoy, who portrays Morpheus, the King of Dreams, leans hard on his polished English accent, and Neil Gaiman takes the role as the narrator with his storyteller’s voice. Listeners are swept up in a saga in which cats talk and nightmares walk, and won’t be able to hit pause once they begin. Published by Audible, Inc. The "golden age of radio drama" may have been a stellar period for storytelling -- but the stories weren't all golden bright. Sci-fi and horror radio dramas explored deep anxieties people felt from the Depression through the Cold War, and set the stage for later stories that couldn't be told yet without special effects. Eric Molinsky of the podcast Imaginary Worlds co-hosts this episode as we hear from historians like Neil Verma and Richard J. Hand, and radio drama veterans like Dirk Maggs and Richard Toscan. "Louie the Lilac" Aired: October 26, 1967 Louie the Lilac wants to corner the flower market of Gotham City with the reasoning that if he does that, he can control the world. It sounds like something similar to what Riddler and Penguin came up with a few weeks ago, but in watching the episode, one finds it kind of makes sense this time. Also, John has stated he's not a fan of Milton Berle, but in discussing this episode, you'll see he actually appreciates Berle in the role of Louie. So what is wrong with this episode? Joining John to discuss the good and the bad of this story is author Jay Smith. Comment on the episode here or write thebatcavepodcast@gmail.com Jay Smith is the creator and executive producer for the Parsec Award-winning audio drama series HG World. Since 2009, Jay and his company of players and producers have been telling the story of survivors in the middle of a global zombie uprising. Now in its third season, this "satellite" production has featured dozens of actors across four continents making it a production truly on a global scale. Since its debut, episodes of HG World and its spin-off series, the Parsec finalist The Diary of Jill Woodbine and The Googies have been downloaded close to a million times. Inspired by the golden age of radio, Hidden Harbor Mysteries presents a story inspired by stylish pulp era radio adventures like The Shadow, Sam Spade, The Green Hornet, and I Love a Mystery. Performed by a stellar cast, Hidden Harbor hopes to integrate classic radio storytelling with some modern twists. Jay draws from the work of Orson Welles, Arch Obelor and looks to modern audio dramatists like Douglas Adams and Dirk Maggs as inspiration to create a rich, realistic world of survival horror laced with dark comedy and compelling human drama. Jay holds a BA in Creative Writing from Southern New Hampshire University and is working on his Master of Fine Arts from Seton Hill University's innovative Writing Popular Fiction program. He attends and speaks at various science fiction and literary conventions about podcasting, writing, audio drama, and zombies. A = Anthology or Serial? What kind of series would you like to make? Doing a serial with ongoing story arcs and characters will give your listeners that extra reason to come back for more. But if you’re the type of person who comes up with five different story ideas a day, maybe the anthology is the route for you. For more discussion on this topic check out our episode ‘Should I make a serial or anthology series?’ B = Balancing/Blending inYour story is going to be told entirely by a collection of different sounds. You might have an actor recording lines her a bedroom in San Diego, whilst another records his in a basement in Madrid. You might have recorded some sound effects in your kitchen, and have others from a professional stock library. The point is that these must all be balanced and blended together in a way that they become one performance. Take time to make sure nothing jars the listener – if something sounds odd or alien to your mix, you need to sort it or replace it. C = CharactersWrite each character with a lot of thought. Who are they? What do they want? Why do they want it? And what stands in their way?Make your characters real people, not one-dimensional caricatures who only serve the purpose of furthering a particular plot aim. Explore their lives, their feelings, their interactions. Build relationships and conflicts. And treat ‘minor’ characters with respect – they may work well enough that you want to build future stories around them and their own lives. D = DAWA Digital Audio Workstation is the software you’ll use to build your Audio Drama. There are several great options out there when it comes to choosing one. Audacity is free and can get you started, but if you think you’re going to stick at audio production you will eventually find it quite limiting. Reaper and Audition are two popular DAWs in the Audio Drama production space. Our advice is to pick one and stick with it, better to master one than be reasonable with three or four. E = EditingContrary to popular belief, making Audio Drama isn’t all flash cars, champagne, and pool parties. Expect to find yourself hunched over a computer screen for hours on end, carefully crafting the tiniest nuances into your soundscape that literally no one is even going to notice – but at the same time you break out in a cold sweat at the thought of leaving them out. F = Final MixThis term is a misnomer in Audio Drama. Nothing is ever really finished. You will always listen back and hear missed opportunities. “Why did I not include the sound of a curtain blowing in the open window across the street?”. Get used to this. When you think you are finished though, you need to listen to your show in as many different ways as possible. Yes it sounds great through your fancy headphones, but does it still work through the laptop speakers, car speakers, or cheap earbuds? I know it’s sacrilege that people will consume your masterpiece this way but that’s just the harsh reality of the world we live in.Never do your final listen sitting at the computer staring at the multitrack, if you do this you are ‘listening with your eyes’. Take your show for a walk, literally. Go out with the earbuds in, and if you notice something missing, or a bit too low/loud, or maybe a piece of dialogue just isn’t hitting the right beat, go back home and adjust it. G = GenreWhat kind of world do you want to live in? The beauty of Audio Drama is that it is completely limitless, you can set your show anywhere. Build fantasy kingdoms, sprawling space stations, decaying post-apocalyptic cities, or set a comedy show in the living room of your own house. We often use this quote from our interview with Dirk Maggs, but it sums up the freedom of this medium wonderfully.“You can do so much more in audio, you can go anywhere. Use your imagination; go from the top of Everest to the depths of the Mariana Trench in the Pacific. Travel to new worlds. Go inside someone’s head… go inside and live in their head…you can go microscopic…you can go cosmic.Good radio drama, good audio drama, is ‘go and make a world’, go and paint a picture in sound, which makes the imagination create huge fascinating pictures… even huge fascinating pictures of tiny things. If it’s a man locked in a cell for twenty years, and you are just with him in that cell, you can still explore everything about the human condition, and you can do it with colour, and texture, and light. And you’re just working in sound.” H = HostingUnless you’re reading this in 2004 you’re probably going to want to release your Audio Dramas free as a podcast series. Incidentally, if you’re thinking of charging for your shows, have a read of this post. But back to podcasting; a good podcast series needs a good media host behind it. We recommend hosting your shows on Libsyn (use coupon code ADPP for a months free hosting with them). For more information on this, have a listen to ‘Where to host your show’ with Dave Jackson. I = InteractionWhen you’ve been putting out shows for a while you will start to build a fanbase. In that fanbase will be listeners who will actually take the time to get in touch with you, to say hello, and to thank you for entertaining them.Make sure you take time to interact with these listeners. Ask them if they make a show themselves, and if you can have a listen to it. Find out more about each listener and become friends with them. You will start small, so take the opportunity to build these relationships while you can. This will create a loyal band of listeners who will share and promote your content for years to come. J = JargonAudio production and writing are the two towers of Audio Drama. Both are absolutely bursting with jargon, terms you’ve probably never heard before, terms that sound extremely complex. You won’t learn everything overnight. In fact, you won’t learn everything in five, or even ten years. Don’t try to master everything at once. Pick and choose your battles, work at them, and absorb information in a slow and patient manner. The internet is full of great tutorials and resources, and there are many excellent books on writing and audio production. Be wary of information overload. Don’t read three books in a row when you’ve yet to take action on a single thing mentioned in the first one. You’ll just be filling up your short term memory with information that will soon be discarded or forgotten. Remember, this is a marathon, not a sprint. K = Kbps, Hz, & File TypesSo anyway, here’s some jargon. Whilst you should record as, or request all your audio material in WAV form, you will want to mix down the final version and release it as an Mp3. This makes it a smaller, more practical size to be downloaded by people all over the world. When you mix down your finished show as an Mp3 you’ll be asked to set the ‘kilobits per second’ (Kbps) of your file. To put this simply, the higher the rate, the higher the sound quality, but also the bigger the size of the file (remember, people need to download these).128kbps is considered ‘CD quality’ – you can go higher than that if you like, but we’d advise against going any lower. This is a good level to shoot for if you’re releasing content through a podcast feed. You can always sell or give away copies with higher rates (256 or 320kbps) as premium content too.On top of that, you’ll also hear sampling frequencies like 44100Hz and 48000Hz being bandied about. Again, higher means better with these numbers, but shoot for 44100Hz with your final mix, for the same size/download reasons we’ve already covered. L = Loudness/LevelsThere’s a long running debate in the audio/podcasting community about how loud things should be. The most important thing to keep in mind initially though is how loud your loudest sound is in relation to your quietest. Your levels and loudness should all be in proportion to each other, and work together as a finished piece.Nobody should ever have to touch the volume button when listening to your show, so if you have a huge explosion, and a scene with two characters whispering, bring them as close together as you can in the mixing stage. For more information on this, Kbps, and more, check out ‘Loudness, bit rates, and audio production’ M = MusicAlongside dialogue and sound effects, music is an integral part of your soundscape, and a powerful storytelling tool. There are some great Creative Commons licensed resources out there that you can use without permission (always check the terms of each license when selecting a track, and remember to credit the composer) but one disadvantage of this is that you’ll hear the same music tracks again and again in different Audio Dramas. If you want to add that extra dimension of individuality to your story, try hooking up with or hiring a composer who would have the ability to custom score your production. For more on this, check out ‘Composing music for Audio Drama’ and ‘Working with composers’ N = NarrationYes you can use a narrator in your show, many great Audio Dramas do. But try to resist relying too heavily on this ‘crutch’ of allowing a disembodied voice to tell the listener things you can create for them using your sound effects, music, and dialogue.Use the vibrant story world to fill gaps with vital story detail, those snippets of background conversation. The TV or radio playing a news broadcast under the conversation of two characters. The trainee or apprentice being told the ins and outs of the company he or she has just joined. There are infinite possibilities here, you just need to get a little creative. For more on this, check out ‘Should I use narration in my Audio Drama?’ and ‘How do I convey thought in Audio Drama?’ O = Opening SceneIf someone is listening to your show, there are hundreds of thousands of other shows that they aren’t listening to. If they get bored, you lose them, and they’re not coming back. You

This week we feature the work of Voices in the Wind, a group based out of Toronto, CA who are producing their own original material as well as classics, such as we'll hear today, "A Christmas Carol."You know the drill, Ebeneezer Scrooge is a jerk and his life is transformed by a bunch of ghosts. It is a haunting tale of wrongdoing and redemption that resonates with the ages, with some 40+ adaptations currently available in audio and many more produced through the ages. In fact, our friend Craig Wichman has compiled a text JUST covering this topic, "Standing in the Spirit at Your Elbow: A History of Dicken's Christmas Carol as Radio/Audio Drama.""Voices" rendition leans towards the traditional, embracing the 'ghostly' part of this ghost story of Christmas. In a dramatic episode of The Archers at the end of last week, Ruth Archer had a miscarriage and sought comfort from her mother Heather. The moment occurred in Friday's broadcast and was repeated during the omnibus on Sunday - Mothering Sunday. Many Feedback listeners felt the timing of the repeat was inappropriate. But others felt the storyline sensitively explored an issue that affects many women. On Saturday, The Archers broke out of Ambridge when Lynda Snell was heard on the phone to Any Answers presenter Anita Anand and David Archer burst into Radio 4 continuity. They were just two of the characters that popped up in the Radio 4 schedule as part of Character Invasion. Other fictional interrupters included Big Bird on Tweet of the Day and Roy of the Rovers on Today. But for some listeners mixing fiction with Radio 4's factual output fell flat. We put listeners' comments to Jeremy Howe, Radio 4's Commissioning Editor for Drama. We'll also be hearing listeners' reaction to a report published on Wednesday by the House of Commons Science and Technology committee. It criticises the BBC's coverage of the Climate Change debate for creating 'false balance' in some of its reports. These findings come as no surprise for some listeners. Also this week, we try to find out why Radio 4 Long Wave has been disappearing at just after 10 o'clock every morning and returning seven hours later. The answer comes from Alan Boyle, who has the intriguing title of Head of Spectrum and Investigation for BBC Distribution. And we hitchhike with director Dirk Maggs as we go behind the scenes at the live Radio 4 broadcast of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. On Saturday morning it came home to Radio 4, 36 years after the first series landed, with earth-shattering effect. We'll join the original cast of characters - Arthur Dent, Zaphod Beeblebrox, Ford Prefect, Trillian - and the new Voice of the Book, John Lloyd. Producer: Will Yates A Whistledown production for BBC Radio 4.
