Ryan and Dylan review the Planet of the Apes reboot trilogy from the 2010s in anticipation of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.
Toby Kebbell on his breakthrough role in Shane Meadows' Dead Man's Shoes, and working with huge industry names like Woody Allen, Oliver Stone, M. Night Shyamalan, Guy Ritchie, Val Kilmer and Robert Redford to name but a fraction. “There's no such thing as a bad student, only a bad teacher.” Toby also gets into all the skills he's learned for roles - things like horseback riding, playing the piano and most recently being trained to box by legend Carl Froch for new movie Salvable co-starring Shia LeBeouf. The pair also discuss the different ways becoming a father can change you, why Toby believes theatre is still the best way for young people to learn acting (even amid the rise in social media presence and personalities), class culture wars and differences in opportunity, and why he believes discipline is responsible for his success.

This film is the sequel to the 2011 previous film, the second film in the reboot series and the 8th film overall in the franchise. The film is directed by Matt Reeves and sees Andy Serkis return from the previous film as the ape, Caesar. Joining him is a slew of a cast which include Jason Clarke, Keri Russell, and Gary Oldman. In the motion capture cast we see Toby Kebbell also return and is joined by Judy Greer, Terry Notary & Karin Konoval. In this film, after the events of the previous film, the drug used to experiment on Caesar, has caused a worldwide pandemic in which more apes have evolved just like Caesar but have a deadly effect on humans which causes conflict between the two. This film was the highest grossing film of the franchise and the 8th highest of the year and won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.

Nell Tiger Free is proving to be quite the genre powerhouse. After starring in four seasons of the widely acclaimed Apple TV+ series, Servant, alongside Lauren Ambrose, Toby Kebbell, and Rupert Grint, she's now headlining a brand new Omen movie, The First Omen, directed by yet another soaring force in the horror space, Arkasha Stevenson. The film takes place before the events of Richard Donner's 1976 classic and focuses on Free's character, Margaret. Margaret grew up in an orphanage where she suffered horrific hallucinations and visions. As a result, she was abused by the nuns in the facility. As a young adult, Margaret is in the novitiate phase and heads off to Rome to become a nun. While there, the pain she carries from her tumultuous childhood collides with the discovery of a sinister agenda unfolding around her, a combination that causes her to question her faith, and everything she thought she knew.In celebration of The First Omen's big debut, Free joined me for a Collider Ladies Night conversation recapping her journey from first discovering her passion for acting to finding an ideal collaborator in Stevenson while making The First Omen. It's clobberin' time!Welcome back to another “Fantastic” episode of Not A Bomb. This is the podcast where we go back and reexamine some of the biggest financial bombs in cinema history. Based on the Marvel superhero comic team of the same name from the 60's, Fantastic Four found an up-and-coming cast, a hot director, and a $155M budget. What could possibly go wrong? This time, we're continuing our look at the reboot of the Planet of the Apes franchise and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and along the way we ask, what are the parallels between the Simian Flu and COVID-19, who is the real villain of the movie and is this a realistic depiction of a societal collapse? Let's dive in Cast & Crew Directed by Matt Reeves: After Rupert Wyatt abandoned the chance to direct this film, Matt Reeves was hired on after directing Cloverfield and Let Me In. He had initially worked in television after developing the hit series Felicity. Starring Jason Clarke as Malcolm: Clarke has developed an everyman type of quality and had gained recognition after appearing in the critically acclaimed war film Zero Dark Thirty and has since appeared in The Great Gatsby, White House Down, Everest, Terminator Genisys and Mudbound Andy Serkis as Caesar: Serkis was the first actor to sign on for the sequel after meeting with Matt Reeves and had become a coach for the other actors who were unfamiliar with the performance capture technology. Toby Kebbell as Koba: Kebbell has become a well-rounded actor in recent years appearing in films like War Horse, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Warcraft and Kong: Skull Island and even provided the motion capture performance as Kong for that film. Gary Oldman as Dreyfus: While he had not yet won an Oscar, Oldman was still widely recognized as a quality actor and had just wrapped up his run as Commissioner James Gordon in Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy Keri Russell as Ellie: Russell had risen to fame after starring on Matt Reeves' television show Felicity and had even won a Golden Globe for her performance on the show. She has since transitioned successfully to films after appearing in We Were Soldiers, Mission Impossible 3, August Rush and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Also Starring: Judy Greer as Cornelia Kodi-Smit McPhee as Alexander Kirk Acevedo as Carver James Franco also reprises his role as Will Rodman in an uncredited cameo COVID-19 & the Simian Flu Throughout the course of Dawn, the pandemic that wiped out humanity is routinely referred to as the “Simian Flu” much to exasperation of characters like Malcolm and Ellie who had apparently worked at the CDC during the outbreak and had firsthand knowledge of the origins of the virus. There's a brief prologue at the opening of the film that tracks the path of the virus of how it devastated humanity and left the remaining survivors in tatters. The COVID-19 pandemic hasn't quite reached the same levels of destruction as the “Simian Flu” did in this film, there are some obvious parallels to draw from that deduction. There were several degrading nicknames that were conceived during the summer of 2020 at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic that directly influenced a rise in hate crimes directed toward Asian Americans. The nicknames come from a place of misunderstanding and fear and it's a mood that permeates Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Who is the Real Villain? Sean and Chris had a healthy debate as to who the actual villain of the film really is. While the low hanging fruit would be Koba as he attempts to assassinate Caesar and kill the humans in San Francisco, an argument could be made for either Carver or Dreyfus as villains. Without Carver, the events of the film don't really kick off as he's the one who shoots Ash at the beginning of the film and brings Malcolm's group into contact with Caesar. Carver then escalates an already tense situation when he pulls a weapon on Caesar's infant son even after Malcolm had promised his group wouldn't carry weapons. Carver does eventually get killed by Koba but as Sean pointed, Carver didn't exactly have to be killed in order for Koba to carry out his insurrection. While Dreyfus is left out of the majority of the film, he does work his group into a frenzy and manages to become a villain with his final act of attempt...

#016! My work colleagues are so supportive, for real! My longest supervisor was Sameena, when I joined my current company. This was not the easiest time in my life---to say the least. Five years ago, this show, the effort I put into my life now was non-existent. I was fresh out of a dark, depressive, mentally-deadly time in my life where a visit to a mental facility was in my history. I share all of this to say, my workplace enthusiasm matched my moods at this time. For Sameena, she saw past a toasted, black girl hiding her earbuds under her hat. She saw a person; a potentially great employee and a complete human with issues and struggles. Words cannot describe how much I need that at the time. I invite Sameena humbly to discuss an episode of the Netflix/Channel 4 British-American sci-fi series, "Black Mirror". This episode is from season #1, the third installment entitled 'The Entire History of You' starring excellent actor and dead-ringer for a high school buddy of mine, Toby Kebbell. She and I chose this episode instead of a traditional film because of the connection between her and the topic---fidelity and the future. As the characters struggle to have a relationship balance with advanced technology, Sameena boldly and somehow humorously shares her separation stories. I learned so much from this episode and from Sameena, please join us as we discuss this show on Full Metal Ratchet! This is FULL METAL RATCHET hosted by TikToker and content creator, Aja (@fullmetalratchet), who loves to dive into deep discussions of film as it pertains to life, love, relationships, and more. Each episode will feature an interesting guest who, along with the host, will provide commentary on some classic movies that you may or have NOT have ever seen! This week's playoff barn burner features Chris Sims from War Rocket Ajax, Tim Grierson from the Grierson & Leitch podcast, and Linda Holmes from NPR's Pop Culture Happy Hour. After a trip to the world of school musicals for My Champion, the forecast calls for a quiz on movies with meteorological titles (weather they like it or not). Round two has an even wider spectrum of titles included in "Pigments of Your Imagination" where players will do some primary and secondary color math to find their favorite pop culture. And of course, a characteristically cutthroat lightning round caps it all off. One more week of playoffs before we get to the season two championship!
