The tournament continues! We're breaking down the sequel to the 2021 hit. This time, we finally get Karl Urban stepping into the spotlight as the one and only Johnny Cage, and let's just say he brings a whole new meaning to "chewing the scenery."Fun Flix Fact: Despite playing the flashy, younger action star, Karl Urban was actually in his early 50s during filming! To keep up with the younger cast, he reportedly underwent a "brutal" martial arts boot camp that he joked was more painful than anything he did in The Boys.Boss Level: The actor playing the villainous Shao Kahn is Martyn Ford, often called the "World's Scariest Man." Standing at 6'8", he didn't need much CGI to look like a literal titan of the arena.Next, we're shifting gears for the pulse-pounding Netflix thriller Apex. Directed by survival specialist Baltasar Kormákur (Everest), this film stars Charlize Theron as a rock climber who finds herself hunted in the wild by a group of psychopaths led by a surprisingly menacing Taron Egerton.Fun Flix Fact: Charlize Theron is no stranger to "suffering for her art," but she reportedly spent weeks training with professional alpinists to ensure her climbing technique was pitch-perfect. Most of those vertiginous shots are actually her!To celebrate a decade since we first entered the Dark Portal, we're revisiting Duncan Jones' Warcraft (2016). We discuss why this remains one of the most visually ambitious video game adaptations ever made and whether it was unfairly judged upon release.Fun Flix Fact: Director Duncan Jones (a massive gamer himself) included a "Level 1" Easter egg in the film. Look for a "Wanted: Hogger" poster in the background—a nod to the notorious low-level elite gnoll that has defeated countless World of Warcraft players!Mo-Cap Mastery: While the Orcs are CGI, the actors (including Toby Kebbell as Durotan) performed their roles in full motion-capture suits alongside life-sized, handcrafted weapons to ensure the physical "weight" of the characters felt real on screen. And if that's not enough entertainment for you, we've even thrown in new trailers to watch and what you can catch on streaming. Hit that subscribe button right now so you never miss an episode of The Flixters! This week's pick comes from Patreon supporter Graeme—clearly a man who woke up and chose absolute emotional devastation. Directed by Shane Meadows, Dead Man's Shoes (2004) is a raw, low-budget British drama that has steadily grown into a cult favourite. Shot primarily in and around Matlock, the film was made on a modest budget estimated at around £723,000. Meadows co-wrote the screenplay with Paddy Considine, who also stars in the lead role. The production leaned heavily on improvisation, giving the performances an unsettling realism that sets it apart from more polished revenge thrillers.Upon release, the film was praised for its intensity, authenticity, and grounded portrayal of working-class life in the Midlands. Toby Kebbell also received acclaim for his emotionally charged supporting performance. Though not a major box office hit, Dead Man's Shoes built its reputation through word of mouth, critical appreciation, and home media circulation—firmly cementing its place as one of the most respected British films of the 2000s.TRAILER GUY PLOT SYNOPSISHe's been away… but now he's back.In a quiet Derbyshire town, a lone figure returns with unfinished business—and a stare that makes hardened men nervous. The locals don't recognise him… not yet. But they will. Oh, they will.Because this isn't just a homecoming. It's a reckoning. And as the tension tightens like a noose, one thing becomes clear: you can run, you can hide… but you can't escape what's coming.FUN FACTSThe film was shot in just three weeks, adding to its raw, documentary-like feelMuch of the dialogue was improvised rather than strictly scriptedShane Meadows has cited the film as one of his most personal worksPaddy Considine reportedly stayed in character for long stretches during filmingThe film's title is a reference to the idea of facing consequences for past actionsIt was filmed using handheld cameras to enhance realism and immersionThe movie is frequently ranked among the best British films of the 21st centuryToby Kebbell landed the role after an open casting callThe soundtrack features moody, atmospheric tracks that heighten the tensionThe film has developed a strong cult following through DVD and streaming platformsSupport the Show If you enjoy the show and would like to support us, we have a Patreon here. This week on Shoot the Hostage we're returning to the pixelated trenches of video-game movies with Warcraft (2016). Expect our usual attempt into film analysis, swearing and enough spoilers to fill a dungeon raid – so make sure you've seen the film before you click that listen button. We're plunging into the world of Azeroth, scrutinising director Duncan Jones's vision and whether this computer game adaptation managed to capture the spirit of its massive source material, or if it ended up being an orc-wad cinematic experience. Join us as we explore the film's cast, from Travis Fimmel's Lothar to Paula Patton's Garona, and the king himself, Dominic Cooper. We'll also dive into the surprisingly stellar CGI for the Orcs (shout out Tobey Kebbell's incredible mocap performance as Durotan!) contrasting with some of the physical sets, props and costumes. Here's what to expect from this week's expedition: We'll dissect Duncan Jones's direction and his legacy after Moon and Source Code. Dan will most likely bemoan the fantasy elements, possibly making a prerequisite joke about punching horses (which you should never do!) Sarah will share her perspective as a World of Warcraft player, but not the games this film is based on. Opinions on the seemingly split fan and critical reception. We'll question if the films $160 million budget was truly visible on screen, especially concerning costumes. We'll dive into the character portrayals by Travis Fimmel, Paula Patton, Toby Kebbell, and even the wasted talents of Ruth Negga. Debate on whether the film's “information overload” is too obtuse for newcomers. Would you like to see the full lineup for season 12? “I'd have preferred they made no movie at all…” - Eric  On this week's episode, the Summer Blockbuster Extravaganza has us chatting about the total misfire of a superhero reboot, Fantastic Four (2015)! Yikes, folks! Why are all members of the Fantastic Four under legal drinking age in this movie? Why did we need to see Reed and Ben as little kids at the beginning like it's some bad studio comedy from the 1990s? Why did so many people think this gritty, harsh take on a traditionally goofy property was a smart move? Why are the Storms snooping around high school science fairs looking for children to snatch up? And couldn't they have pumped just a little more money into this Doctor Doom costume? PLUS: Look out for the most dangerous member of the Marvel Universe — The Pebble!  Fantastic Four (2015) stars Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan, Jamie Bell, Toby Kebbell, Tim Blake Nelson, Dan Castellaneta, Chet Hanks, Tim Heidecker, and the late, great Reg E. Cathey as Dr. Franklin Storm; directed by Josh Trank. [EDITOR'S NOTE: While he's not in this FF film, we do mention Julian McMahon's performance as Dr. Doom in the Tim Story Fantastic Four films from 2005 and 2007. We recorded this about a month before Julian passed, so that's why it's not referenced here. McMahon was a great actor who, as we say in this episode, understood the assignment when playing Dr. Doom in those aughts films. Rest easy, Julian, a talented and very nice guy from all reports. — Andrew] Throughout 2025, we'll be donating 100% of our earnings from our merch shop to the Center for Reproductive Rights. After starring in four seasons of the widely acclaimed Apple TV+ series, Servant, alongside Lauren Ambrose, Toby Kebbell, and Rupert Grint, she's now headlining a brand new Omen movie, The First Omen, directed by yet another soaring force in the horror space, Arkasha Stevenson. The film takes place before the events of Richard Donner's 1976 classic and focuses on Free's character, Margaret. Margaret grew up in an orphanage where she suffered horrific hallucinations and visions. As a result, she was abused by the nuns in the facility. As a young adult, Margaret is in the novitiate phase and heads off to Rome to become a nun. While there, the pain she carries from her tumultuous childhood collides with the discovery of a sinister agenda unfolding around her, a combination that causes her to question her faith, and everything she thought she knew.In celebration of The First Omen's big debut, Free joined me for a Collider Ladies Night conversation recapping her journey from first discovering her passion for acting to finding an ideal collaborator in Stevenson while making The First Omen. Two movies. Three people. One rambling conversation. Each film is our first time watching them. We often go off-topic. The Beguiled is a 2017 American Southern Gothic thriller film written and directed by Sofia Coppola, based on the 1966 novel of the same name (originally published as A Painted Devil) by Thomas P. Cullinan. It stars Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst, and Elle Fanning. It tells the story of an unexpected arrival of a wounded Union soldier at a girls' school in Virginia during the American Civil War leads to jealousy and betrayal. Destroyer is a 2018 American neo-noir crime drama film directed by Karyn Kusama, written and co-produced by Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi, and starring Nicole Kidman with Toby Kebbell, Tatiana Maslany, Scoot McNairy, Bradley Whitford, and Sebastian Stan. The film follows a former undercover police officer (Kidman), who takes revenge against members of a gang, years after her case was blown.
