Radio IDs, something few of us (me included) think of but have all experienced and cherished. They are those fun zingers, prompting a new radio show or DJ. They change for the holidays and for topical reference. They are the sounds of our past, present, and future, and the focus of this episode. Twenty Thousand Hertz hired me to produce an episode on Radio IDs and now I'm sharing its ENCORE. Thank you to Twenty Thousand Hertz, Dallas Taylor, and Casey Emmerling for letting me run this ENCORE and for hiring me to produce it in the first place. The original episode can be found here. It's been such a treat for me to get to chat with podcasters whom I admire (along with their work). I get to add to the collection, another fave, in "Twenty Thousand Hertz", and chat with host Dallas Taylor, too. As you'll plainly hear, Dallas has not only a passion for his show, but for all of the sounds that surround us. He also features other podcasts on his show for the "sonic deep dives",too. Plus, he's a cool guy to hang around with. I'm disregarding the fact that he called security on me this time around, but I'll remind him to keep pepper spray handy when he comes back. (I'm nice that way, you know....) Thanks for coming on the show, Dallas! Today we talk to Dallas Taylor, host of the most popular sound podcast on the planet, Twenty Thousand Hertz. I like to think our show sounds pretty good, but Twenty Thousand Hertz is next-level audio production, some of the very best in the podcasting business. And Dallas prides himself on making a podcast for absolutely everyone. As he told me, he tries to make a show that's just as mainstream and approachable as a true crime show. We start off with a chat about Dallas's background in music, how he entered the world of sound design, what inspired him to start the podcast, and how he was discovered by Roman Mars of the legendary design podcast 99% Invisible. Then we jump into the nuts and bolts of how he and his team make Twenty Thousand Hertz. Dallas was kind enough to share the stems for my favorite episode, titled “Space,” so we will do a Song Exploder-like anatomy of that episode before listening to the full episode in the second half of the show. Today's show was edited by Craig Eley with additional help from Ravi Krishnaswami. Our Production Coordinator and transcriber is Jason Meggyesy Learn more about your ad choices. What happens when your podcast's theme song—cobbled together from GarageBand loops—gets called “game show music” and likened to a cereal commercial? You rewrite it. In this episode, we take you behind the scenes of Switched on Pop's sonic makeover, from scathing critiques by music industry heavyweights to the creation of a lush, layered soundscape inspired by Wendy Carlos and PBS science shows. With expert advice from sonic branding maestro Dallas Taylor (Twenty Thousand Hertz) and the composers Zach Tenorio and Jocie Adams (Arc Iris), we dissect every step of transforming our theme into a timeless sonic identity. This week we are excited to introduce you to one of our favorite podcasts being made today, Twenty Thousand Hertz, a family-friendly podcast that tells the stories behind the world's most recognizable and interesting sounds. And this episode features something we can all love... Minecraft. Since its official release in 2011, Minecraft has grown from a small, experimental indie game into the best-selling video game of all time. Today, the game's haunting music and quirky sound effects are just as iconic as its blocky visuals. In this episode, composer and sound designer Daniel Rosenfeld (also known as C418) unpacks how he created the original music and sounds for the game. Your guide on this sonic journey is Dallas Taylor, a sound expert who's been featured in The New York Times, NPR, and is a Ted Mainstage speaker. This episode was written and produced by Leila Battison. Who really composed the scores of Dune, Interstellar, Blade Runner 2049, The Dark Knight, Man of Steel, Pirates of the Caribbean and The Lion King? Were they all written by Hans Zimmer? Or were those scores put together by a team of musicians at Hans Zimmer's studio Remote Control? The podcast Twenty Thousand Hertz went behind-the-scenes and got a rare glimpse at the creative process of one of the most revered film composers in the world. Plus, I talk with Dallas Taylor, the host of 20K Hertz, about why visiting Hans Zimmer's studio was almost like a religious experience for him. Learn more about your ad choices. Many of the songs we sing to our children are hundreds of years old, with their original meanings obscured by history. In this episode, producer Leila Battison takes Dallas on a dark, surprising journey through history's most famous nursery rhymes and lullabies, and up through the “Baby Sharks” and “Happy Songs” of today. Along the way, they share the songs they've made up for their own children, and explore why this music is just as important to parents as it is to kids. Whale songs are some of the most beautiful, cathartic sounds in nature. These extraordinary creatures use sound to socialize, to mate, to find food, and avoid predators. But for aquatic animals, the sounds of human activity can be absolutely devastating. With underwater noise pollution on the rise, what can we do to ensure the survival of these amazing creatures? Today, that little sound is being heard millions of times a day on apps like Instagram, Reddit and Youtube… but creating it wasn't easy. To make it, the creative team went through thousands of iterations, executed a covert marketing strategy, and fought through a final debate about a single note.
