After a bit of a mid-season break FANS is back, and what a return it is as Sachin is joined by brilliant Talksport journalist Natasha Everitt for a chat about Charlton Athletic and the excellent Her Game Too campaign. Quite simply, Natasha was born to support Charlton, which she explains via possibly the greatest origin story in FANS history. It's a genuine love affair and there is no doubting Natasha's love for a club that has experienced incredible highs and lows during her 20 years or so following them. There were the Roland Duchâtelet years, characterised by chaos and heartbreak on and off the pitch but also the never-to-be-forgotten afternoon at Wembley in May 2019 when Charlton came from behind to beat Sunderland in the League One play-off final. Natasha talks with great vividness about what it was like to be an Addick during that time. Natasha also talks about the immense sense of belonging she feels watching Charlton at The Valley and, specifically, from a stand named after Alan Curbishley, a legendary figure in the club's history who Natasha was too young to appreciate at the time but well and truly adores now, and mainly because of his surprisingly good appearances on Charlton TV. It's then onto Her Game Too, a movement created last year with the intention of making football a safer and more welcoming place for female fans. Natasha is its Charlton ambassador and she explains with great clarity and conviction why and how she got involved. That involves speaking about the sexist abuse she has has suffered as a Charlton fan, in person and online. Seriously, this vile crap needs to stop. Natasha wraps things up by talking through her all-time Charlton XI (which provides Sachin with an excuse to bang on about Joe Gomez) and providing an answer to the final question. So download, listen and love. And after you have, please Rate and Review. It would mean a lot. Cheers!
In the second part of this Tactical Stand special, we cover Charlton's situation in the last two years. What happened right after owner Roland Duchâtelet left, how circumstances suddenly got worse, why the club was in fear of going into administration during lockdown and finally whether their current situation is a blessing or curse!
In the first part of this Tactical Stand Special, we discuss about Charlton Athletic and their troubles following their relegation from the Premier League in 2007. We then exclusively cover the "dark years" under then-owner Roland Duchâtelet.
This week, Miles Blumsom is joined by Paul Sullivan and Ollie Cook from the SE7 Podcast as they discuss the COVID-19 Global Pandemic and a Civil War within the club between chairman Matt Southall and majority shareholder Tahnoon Nimer. The club's ownership could take a fresh twist as a legal challenge is set to be lodged over the ESI transaction. Could Roland Duchâtelet return to the Valley? How will the club survive this one? Charlton legend Dean Kiely gives his thoughts on this and feels if players downed tools now, their reputations could be tarnished. All this and more on the Charlton fans show.
In the fourth and final episode of Getting to Know the Network, we look at Roland Duchâtelet’s motives for buying Charlton, his end game. We also take a look at the reasons Charlton were relegated into English football’s third tier. During the ill-fated 2015/16 season the club would once again have three Head Coaches and we speak to all of them as well as some of Duchatelet’s closest aides who helped him make his network vision a reality. In this extended, 50 minute episode, we also speak to Peter Varney, Chris Powell and supporters who formed a protest group against Duchatelet, to discuss what’s coming next for Charlton.
After the sacking of Chris Powell in March 2014, the following nine months of Roland Duchâtelet’s ownership of Charlton come under the microscope in the third episode of Getting to Know the Network, The Experiment. In that time three Head Coaches were appointed and we look closely at the tenure of José Riga and Bob Peeters as well as the appointment of Guy Luzon in January 2015. In this episode we hear from Riga, Peeters and Luzon as well as first-team coach Damian Matthew who worked under all three Head Coaches. We also speak to Charlton’s two-time Player of the Year Jordan Cousins, as well as Karel Fraeye, Astrit Ajdarevic, Piotr Parzyszek, Simon Church, Ben Hamer and Chris Powell.
From the outset, it was clear that to properly measure the success and failure of Roland Duchâtelet’s network at Charlton, it was vital for Getting to Know the Network to assess the club he inherited. Episode one, The Inheritance, sets the scene for Duchâtelet’s arrival at The Valley. It explores the years immediately prior to the takeover and why it became necessary that the club was sold. Among those interviewed in The Inheritance is former England international and Charlton legend Chris Powell, who led the club to the League One title in 2012 and was manager of Charlton when Duchâtelet took over. Powell, along with a series of former players, staff and board members, discuss the state of the club before anyone had heard of Roland Duchâtelet.
The first three months of Roland Duchâtelet’s reign at Charlton come under the microscope in the explosive second episode of Getting to Know the Network, The Wrecking Ball. Duchâtelet took over in January 2014, and The Wrecking Ball focuses on the eventful recruitment process during that month’s transfer window, the repercussions of which are still being felt today. For the first time the former chief scout of Duchâtelet’s network is interviewed about Charlton, and two of his closest advisors also speak out. But that’s not all. Getting to Know the Network has exclusively obtained emails sent by Duchâtelet to then Charlton manager Chris Powell, and the second episode will throw a spotlight on the influence, or interference, of the owner in team matters.
