What if the worldview functioning as an opiate today is not religion, but its absence? At five I told my dad, “When I grow up I am going to become a marine scientist.” I pursued my dream and went to college where I graduated as a Marine Biologist and later continued my graduate studies until I got a Ph.D. in Marine Sciences with emphasis in Biological Oceanography. My passion for my career had brought me to be a very successful scientist in this field. Since I was very little my parents discovered that my learning abilities were astonishing but that was not all. Later they also discovered that I could see and hear things that no one else could. All this seemed to be tied up with the aftermath of a near-death experience (NDE) where I drowned at the age of two. Not long after, I started to communicate with Beings of Light who have guided me through a journey of miracles, not just around the world but also through the barriers of time. For forty years, near-death researchers built their models almost entirely on adult testimony. A new literature review just revealed the oversight: only 8 studies in four decades directly included children as subjects - despite children regularly surviving cardiac arrests and reporting experiences every bit as vivid as adults.What those children report is startling in its implications. They share the structural features of NDEs - the tunnel, the light, the out-of-body sensation - but none of the cultural overlay that fills adult accounts. No life reviews. No deceased relatives. No religious figures shaped by their tradition. The researchers describe children's accounts as more "raw" - less mediated by a lifetime of cultural expectation.

I haven’t yet had a chance to talk about New German Cinema on Eros + Massacre, though episodes on Rainer Werner Fassbinder and key figures from his group of collaborators have been high on my list. I could never pick a single favorite director, but Fassbinder is at least in the top five. And Kurt Raab—the actor, set designer, art director, screenwriter, and producer who was among Fassbinder’s most loyal, brilliant, and beleaguered collaborators—is among my favorite Germans to ever exist, so it seemed like a good idea to start with him. Film programmer and projectionist Adrianna Gober is the only person I know who loves Raab as much as I do, and we’ve been planning this episode for… years now. We decided to focus on three of Raab’s films, though we do give a lengthy intro about Fassbinder himself and how he set the creative tone for much of Raab’s career. First up is Tenderness of the Wolves (1973), a bleak serial killer thriller officially directed by Ulli Lommel, but it’s essentially a collaborative effort between Lommel and Raab, made with Fassbinder’s assistance. The center piece of the episode is Fassbinder’s Bolwieser aka The Stationmaster’s Wife (1977), a two-part made for TV series that has primarily been available in a truncated, feature-length version. A kind Discord user tracked down the complete version for us, not knowing we had already recorded, but we HAD TO go back and say more. And we end with a shorter discussion about Barbet Schroeder’s Cheaters (1984), a gambling drama with one of Raab’s wildest character actor roles. I am a bad person and still have not yet been there, but it’s on my list of resolutions for this spring!

Die Frage nach einem Leben nach dem Tod wird auch dem Theologen und Seelsorger Andreas Zimmermann häufig gestellt bei seiner Arbeit im Hospiz. Er antwortet ganz offen: «Ich weiss auch nicht mehr als andere, erlebe die Diskussion darüber aber häufig als bereichernd.» Am Ende ist der Glaube sehr individuell. Eine Studie mit 100-Jährigen in Deutschland zeigt, dass jede zweite Person daran glaubt, dass es nach dem Tod weitergeht. Was die Wissenschaft besser beantworten kann: Es gibt Hinweise darauf, was im Moment des Sterbens passiert. Eine Vielzahl von Menschen, die einen Herzstillstand überlebt haben, berichtet von Nahtoderlebnissen oder zumindest einer Form bewussten Erlebens, ohne Details benennen zu können. Das konnten Hirnstrom-Messungen bei einem Epilepsie-Patienten nach dessen Herzinfarkt bestätigen. Das Gehirn war bei diesem Mann hochaktiv, auch Minuten nach dem Tod. Der Kardiologe Pim van Lommel hat Jahrzehnte zu Nahtorderfahrungen und dem Bewusstsein geforscht und kommt zum Schluss: "Bewusstsein ist immer da - auch ohne Körper."
