Johan Bruyneel and Spencer Martin break down the ongoing saga surrounding Remco Evenepoel and his Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe team, Tim Merlier's dominant back-to-back stage wins, and whether Mads Pedersen should worry about the tightening battle for the Green Jersey. Johan also digs into the history books to compare how exactly Tadej Pogačar stacks up against Eddy Merckx. Plus, a comprehensive preview of tomorrow's Stage 9, a brutal day through the Massif Central that is bound to trigger a thrilling fight for the yellow jersey and the stage win. It's the week of the Tour de France Grand Départ, and with it have come a few big bike launches. Escape's senior tech editors, Dave Rome and Ronan Mc Laughlin, jump on to discuss whether Specialized's new Tarmac hits the mark. There's also a new bike from Orbea. Plus Dave asks Ronan to confirm just how progressive his fit is, and as it turns out, the answer is not very. Ronan then jumps on a call with Daan Teugels from Belgian Cycling Factory to discuss how Eddy Merckx's reduced-frame-size options can still meet racers' needs. As always, members of Escape Collective don't just support independent journalism; they get access to everything we have to offer. For Geek Warning, that means access to the weekly Ask a Wrench segment, where pro mechanics answer our member's tech questions. And apologies for the audio this week, as Dave accidentally landed on his backup microphone.
This week, Dave, Ronan, and new guy Jack chat about Eddy Merckx's new bike and why it's surprised Ronan. The bike provides good fodder for diving into more serviceable cockpits and for understanding why only fashion may limit the uptake of progressive road geometry. There's good news for those who prefer cable-actuated shifting, as Shimano has updated its mountain bike offerings. Dave has other things on his mind, too, including Australia's Spoken bike show and how downhill is teasing future puzzling for disc brakes.Of course, there's plenty more than that, and members of Escape Collective also get Ask a Wrench at the end of the episode (members-only feed).Time stamps: 00:01:30 - The new Eddy Merckx and an exploration into progressive road geometry 00:22:45 - Shimano's mechanical shifting update 00:29:00 - Shimano updates a real classic 00:31:45 - Don't miss Overnight Success 00:33:50 - Downhill tech is on Dave's mind and the pursuit of heat-regulated brakes 00:39:15 - Dave makes a case for why Australia's builder scene is world-class 00:46:00 - Cannondale's nostalgic Team Dream CAAD14s 00:47:15 - Bianchi's new Specialissima 00:51:45 - Ask a Wrench with Colin Williams (Members Only) 00:54:00 - A Shimano mechanical dropbar shifter that's coming undone 01:03:00 - Inconsistent Torx tooling 01:13:45 - Noisy eccentric bottom bracket challenges 01:21:20 - Disc brake pads for high elevation bike packing

Not sure which part of your cycling training is actually working?Start with the SEMIPRO Training X-Ray:
An auction lot of six dusty cycling-themed bottles of wine from the 80s provides the inspiration behind Velo Vino, a new podcast mini-series that explores some tales from the pro peloton's history through rosé-tinted spectacles.Cycling journalists Felix Lowe and Graham Willgoss invite you to take a seat at the table with professional wine buff Chris Maybin as they uncork these aged bottles and sift through the stories and sentiments behind the sediment. For the third instalment of this mini-series, our three sommeliers of the saddle sip on two 1986 bottles from the family vineyard of one of the most successful cyclists of all time: Francesco Moser. Will the 40-year-old chardonnay deliver the pungent punch it promises? Will the Teroldego table wine be, well... terrible?Either will do well to live up to Moser's palmarès: world champion in 1977, Giro d'Italia winner in 1984, the same year he broke Eddy Merckx's Hour Record in Mexico, three-time Paris-Roubaix winner, two Il Lombardia wins, one Milano-Sanremo – the list goes on for the man known to the Italian tifosi as ‘Lo Sceriffo'.Felix also speaks to Moser's son, Carlo, about the family business, and the trio taste some more recent vintages from the estate – including one of the signature Trentodoc sparkling wines, named after the kilometres covered by Moser in his Hour Record attempt: 51.151km.All four episodes of Velo Vino are brought to you in association with Rouleur magazine and Nyetimber, the English sparkling wine producer and proud backer of British Cycling. Slip into the sipstream of Felix, Graham and Chris as they raise a glass to some Grand Tour tannins of yesteryear.Produced by Matthew Vines. Hosted on Acast. Today on the show: Jonas Vingegaard can now be mentioned alongside Eddy Merckx and Sean Kelly, Isaac del Toro grabbed Tirreno-Adriatico by the trident forks, and Javier Romo is angry with Matteo Jorgenson.
This week's guest is Pieter Potters, R&D manager at Belgian Cycling Factory, the group that owns Eddy Merckx Cycles and Ridley Bikes. For nearly six years Pieter has been at the centre of designing cutting edge road and gravel bikes, including the recent Ridley Noah Fast 3.0, which features a new kind of geometry that many see poised to change the game - think steep seat tubes, short cranks and aggressive forward positioning of the rider (don't worry, Pieter explains it better).Pieter is also in charge designing Eddy Merckx bikes, so here he discusses plans to rejuvenate that once great marque, along with answering questions around how much input pro-riders really have into the bikes they ride, how to design bikes for the modern age, how to negotiate potentially ruinous UCI rule changes, and that perennial question, just why are bikes so expensive?Interview begins atThis episode is brought to you by the Hammerhead Karoo GPS bike computer. This week, James is joined by Lee Donaldson, filmmaker and passionate cycling fan, to discuss his upcoming documentary 525: The Unstoppable Eddy Merckx. Welcome to the final GCN Show of the year, where Si and Dan dive into the trends that will shape the cycling world in 2026! We tackle the big debate: has Tadej Pogačar officially surpassed Eddy Merckx as the greatest male cyclist in history? From the rise of "gromestiques" and 32-inch mountain bike wheels to the shifting science of Zone 3 training, we're looking ahead at what's next for the sport. Plus, we look back at our epic adventures from the past year and feature your most ingenious (and questionable) hacks and bodges.
If you know, you know: Eddy Merckx and his story have always had huge traction for my cycling passion. So, having the opportunity to talk with the Marketing Manager of the brand that bears his name is just incredible. In this episode of the BroomWagon Podcast

Graham Watson didn't just photograph bike races — he lived them, from the back of a motorbike, chasing the world's Greatest Cyclists through cobbled streets, Alpine climbs, and chaotic sprints for over 40 years. In this episode, Graham joins us from his porch in New Zealand to reflect on a career that started in a London portrait studio and somehow led to shooting legends like Eddy Merckx, Miguel Indurain, Lance Armstrong, Tom Boonen, Greg LeMond, Marco Pantani, Bernard Hinault and many more — often at 50 km/h, with a camera in hand and no second chances. We talk about how photography evolved over four decades on the road — from film to digital, darkroom prints to wireless image delivery, Nikon FM2s to the D5. Graham shares how he handled pressure, what made a good race a photographer's dream, great personal stories and why chasing light and landscapes was just as important as chasing the riders. We also talk about a photographer's retirement, life in New Zealand, Belgian beer, and the making of his beautiful book 40 Years of Cycling Photography — a visual time capsule of a life spent chasing moments most of us only ever see from the sidelines. Whether you're a photographer who loves cycling, or a cyclist who loves photography — this one's for you. *****
Lance, George, and Sir Bradley Wiggins discuss Tadej Pogačar's stage win atop the Mûr-de-Bretagne that netted him his 19th career Tour de France stage win and saw him further extend his GC lead over his key competition. They also discuss Jonas Vingegaard bouncing back after his disappointing time trial performance to be the only GC contender capable of matching Pogačar's acceleration to the line, Visma continuing to deploy aggressive tactics early in the stage, and how the late crash, which took down UAE's João Almeida, could complicate Pogačar's title defense when the race hits the mountains. This week James and Will are joined by Stephen Roche, who in 1987 became only the second rider in history to win the Giro d'Italia, Tour de France and World Championships in one season, aka the Triple Crown (pub fact: the other was Eddy Merckx in 1972, then Tadej Pogačar joined them in 2024).In this episode Stephen talks us through this incredible season, from the rollercoaster Giro that had him fearing for his safety, to crossing the line first in Austria to cap a historic season. Stephen also regales us with tales of his early years at notorious French amateur club ABCC; falling out with team bosses and sponsors; proving the doubters wrong; crashing and injury; and what he makes of the sport today. This July, Stephen will be riding three stages of the Tour de France as part of the Tour 21 venture, raising money for Cure Leukaemia along the way, a charity close to Stephen's heart after his son Florian was diagnosed with the disease aged just seven. Lance, George, and Johan break down the 2025 edition of Liège–Bastogne–Liège, which saw Tadej Pogačar romp to an effortless victory over the doomed chase group of Giulio Ciccone and Ben Healy, taking his third win in the last five editions and cementing his status as the sport's most dominant racer in both one-day events and stage races. The trio discusses how Pogačar's UAE team set up his searing race-winning attack on the Côte de La Redoute, why it is so hard for anyone to even challenge him on these difficult courses, and where the Pogačar/Evenepoel rivalry stands after a truly disappointing outing from the young Belgian.
