Chris Holtmann - Ohio State University Men's Basketball Head Coach - Episode 543

Chris Holtmann is beginning his fifth season as the Men's Basketball Head Coach for the Ohio State Buckeyes in 2021-22. Holtmann is just the second Ohio State coach to win 20 or more games in each of his first four seasons in Columbus. Holtmann's 87 combined wins in his first four years as an Ohio State coach are the third most behind Thad Matta's 105 victories and Fred Taylor's 89 in Ohio State history. In three seasons at Butler, Holtmann compiled a record of 70-31 as a member of the BIG EAST conference. In 10 years as a head coach, which includes three years at Gardner-Webb (44-54) and four in Columbus (87-43), his career record is 201-128. His teams have won at least 20 games in each of the last eight seasons. Before becoming the head coach at Gardner-Webb, Holtmann served two seasons as an assistant coach at Ohio University under former Ohio State assistant coach John Groce, and spent five seasons, including four as associate head coach, on the staff at Gardner-Webb Holtmann was an NAIA All-American guard at Taylor University, helping guide the Trojans to a 25-9 record, a No. 1 national ranking and a berth in the NAIA National Tournament in 1993-94. After his playing days, Holtmann spent the 1997-98 season as a graduate assistant atTaylor and the 1998-99 season as an assistant at Geneva College before returning to Taylor as an assistant coach under Paul Patterson from 1999-2003. Dan Priest is entering his 12th year as the Head Men' Basketball Coach at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. Priest was named NCAC Coach of the Year in 2013 has had 14 players named to All-NCAC teams during his tenure at Kenyon.  Prior to coming to Kenyon, he spent seven seasons as the Head Coach at Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas where he inherited a 0-23 team and within three years led the Warriors to a 15-10 mark. Prior to his six seasons at Hendrix, Priest spent five years as head coach at Ohio Dominican University, in Columbus, Ohio. Priest's past coaching experiences also includes seven years as an assistant at Hanover College and brief stints as a graduate assistant at both Indiana State University and Miami (OH) University. As a player, Priest was a three-year letterman at Ohio Northern University and helped lead the Polar Bears to the NCAA Tournament in 1988. Garrett Hickey is entering his fifth season at Fairfield Prep.  Hickey was previously an Assistant Coach at Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, Connecticut from 2015-2017.  Prior to his time at Albertus, Hickey was a scout for Notre Dame Fairfield High School.  Garrett produces a weekly newsletter for coaches called Share the Game, is a Fast Model Contributor, and works with PHD Basketball as a skills trainer and AAU coach. Hickey also teaches middle school social studies in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Rob Summers is entering his third season as a Men's Basketball Assistant Coach at Cleveland State University. Summers spent the previous two seasons as an assistant coach at James Madison after serving as the head coach at Division II Urbana (Ohio), where he headed the program for three seasons. Prior to that, he was the director of operations at James Madison for the 2013-14 season after a two-year stint at Glenville State, where he was the associate head coach and compliance coordinator. A graduate of Gahanna Lincoln High School, Summers started a sterling collegiate career at Penn State, where he appeared in 56 games from 2002-04. After transferring to West Virginia, he played three seasons under Head Coach John Beilein where he was a three-time Big East Academic All-Star. As a senior, he led WVU to a win in the NIT Championship, starting 36 games and shooting 63.3 percent from the field. Mark Schult is entering his first season as an assistant men's basketball coach at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky. Schult spent the previous two seasons at Division II University of West Georgia where he earned his Master's of Science in Sport Management. Schult spent the two years prior to West Georgia as an assistant coach for Clark State College in Springfield, Ohio. He played a large role in turning around the Eagles' culture, as the program went from one win to 15 wins over his two seasons. Every friday night we have several coaches from area high schools and beyond that keep it real and authentic right off the field and into your device of choice. Stanley Dunbar Saint Rays and URI Alumni coaching against his former team and head coach Sassi. Jeff Paiva right off the field and on the bus ride home after a tough Chariho team. Coach Paiva said I'm not gonna blow off any interviews Win lose or indifferent. North Smithfield was hit with the injury bug early but coach didn't make any excuses for the 41-0 loss to Division 3 chargers. #Pilgrimpride is real in Warwick. #BlakeSimpson is making a lot of noise and doing a great job. Blake and his team have been great supporters of the program. Back from a trip to D2 Road to the super bowl will definitely go trough Pilgrim After starting the season off 0-2 Wes Pennington knows nothing will come easy in West Warwick but he does have the town talking. After losing 24-14 and having a couple TD called back head coach #wespennington said #westwarwickwizards was the better team on the field that day. #tolman had a tough line which pilgrim said the same thing as well players like devin ward Tolman has a very good team. Clint Hordemann is the Director of Player Development for Select Basketball, an AAU Program based in Garden City, Idaho.  After playing at Boise State University, Clint began his coaching career at the University of Nevada-Reno under Trent Johnson. He also worked for the Idaho Stampede of the NBA's Developmental League before starting with Select Basketball in 2003 . Clint graduated from Boise State in 2001 after 4 seasons on the Bronco basketball team, including a run to the Big West Conference Championship game. After attending Clackamas Community College as a freshman, Clint walked on at Boise State and earned a full scholarship for his three remaining seasons. Nick LoGalbo is entering his 14th season as the head boys' basketball coach (17th total) at his alma mater Lane Tech High School in Chicago, Illinois. Nick recently returned from Hungary where he led the Team USA U18 Men's and Women's Teams to Gold Medals in the FIBA 3 x 3 World Cup.  He has worked with USA Basketball as a lead clinician for their youth development clinics and regional camps, serves as a regional coordinator for USAB 3×3, and he has also spoken at USA Basketball's Coaches Academy to other aspiring coaches from across the country. Nick played his high school basketball at Lane Tech and then played four years of collegiate basketball at Benedictine University. This week on this special edition of Inside the Headset, we are featuring the former Head Coaches of the military academies that coached during the tragedy of 9/11. These coaches include former Air Force Head Coach Fisher DeBerry, former Navy Head Coach Charlie Weatherbie, and former Army Head Coach Todd Berry. In this episode all three coaches tell their personal 9/11 stories while coaching at their military academy institution, discuss what recruiting was like post 9/11, and highlight the unique experiences of coaching at a military academy. Todd Berry is the current Executive Director for the AFCA where he has served since 2016. Coach Berry served four years as the Head Coach for the Army Black Knights from 2000-2003 which included the 2001 9/11 season. Prior to his stint at Army, Coach Berry was the Head Coach of Illinois State from 1996-1999 where he lead the Red Birds to two FCS postseason playoff appearances. Most recently Coach Berry was the Head Coach of the Louisiana-Monroe football program where he coached from 2010-2015. Fisher Deberry is the former Head Coach of the Air Force Falcons. Coach DeBerry coached the Falcons from 1984-2006 and achieved a great amount of on-field success during his 21 seasons at Air Force. Under Coach DeBerrys leadership, Air Force dominated the Commander-in-Chiefs series going on to win the trophy 14 times. In addition to that, Coach DeBerrys Air Force teams won three conference titles and also went to numerous postseason bowl games where they won a total of six during his tenure. Due to Coach DeBerry's historic career where he won six coach of the year awards, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2011. Charlie Weatherbie is the former Head Coach of the Navy Midshipmen. Coach Weatherbie spent seven seasons (1995-2001) at Navy where he lead the Midshipmen to one bowl win. Prior to Navy, Coach Weatherbie spent three seasons as the Utah State Head Coach where he won a conference championship in 1993. Coach Weatherbie's last head coaching spot was at the University of Louisiana-Monroe where he coach from 2003-2009. During his time at Louisiana-Monroe Coach Weatherbie lead the Warhawks to a conference championship in 2005. Coach Weatherbie is currently the director of the First Baptist Orlando Love Orlando Initiative, which distributes funds in the greater Orlando, Florida area to prevent homelessness. Brent Tipton will be entering his first season as an assistant coach of the Men's U19 Team at the Porsche Basketball Academy in Germany.  Brent's coaching journey began in 2012 as the Head Coach of the U18 Guam Men's National team. From 2012-2021, he served numerous coaching positions within the Guam Basketball Federation. He served as Head Coach of Guam's U15, U17 and U18 Men's National Basketball teams, Head Coach of Guam's Senior Woman's National Team, and Assistant Coach for Guam's Senior Men's National Team. While serving with the Guam Basketball Federation, Brent also started the men's basketball program at The University of Guam in 2016. During the inaugural season of 2016 and without the opportunity to recruit athletes, the University of Guam Tritons won only two games. The following season and with the first recruiting class, the UoG Tritons finished 30-0, capturing both the Guam Basketball Association championship and the Guam College Basketball League championship. In 2019 and after three seasons with the Tritons, Brent resigned from the head coach position to focus more on his responsibilities within the Guam Basketball Federation and join Guam's Men's Senior National team coaching staff. Brent is a 2018 graduate of the FIBA Europe Coaching Certificate. The FECC is the most prestigious coaching program in Europe for basketball with its focus on developing basketball players at the youth level. Brent is also a graduate of the Basketball Australia Emerging Coach Initiative earning the Basketball Australia High Performance Coach accreditation and Coach Developer accreditation. John Carroll is entering his 21st season as the Boys' Basketball Head Coach at Northfield Mount Hermon School in Massachusetts. At NMH, John has coached over 70 Division I basketball players and many more college basketball players. He has led the NMH basketball program to the distinction of being recognized as the best combination of academics and basketball in the United States. In 2021-2022, NMH will have over 2 dozen basketball alums playing NCAA basketball including 14 in the Ivy League. An NMH alum will play in all 56 Ivy League regular season games in 2021-2022! NMH will also have alums playing at Notre Dame, Kentucky, Kansas, Texas, Northwestern, Washington State, Massachusetts, Hawaii, Colgate, College of Charleston, Tulane, and Elon in Division I. In 2016, Carroll was recognized by the Positive Coaching Alliance with their National Double-Goal Coach Award. Ryan Pannone is the Head Coach of the New Orleans Pelicans' G League Affiliate, the Birmingham Squadron.  Pannone has coached the team, formerly known as the Erie BayHawks, since August of 2019. Ryan has previously coached all over the world as both a head coach and an assistant, including stints in China, Germany, South Korea, Isreal, Slovakia and with the Angolan National Team. Pannone's early experiences as a coach included time in high school coaching as both an assistant and head coach at Oldsmar Christian School as well as working as an intern with NBA Player Development Coach David Thorpe in his early twenties to help prepare players for the NBA Draft. Trey Morin is entering his first season as the Boys' Basketball Program Director and Head Coach at St. Andrew's School in Austin, Texas. Morin was previously the Head Boys Basketball Coach at the Phelps School in Malvern, Pennsylvania. Brianna Finch is in her first season as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the Boston University women's basketball staff having been hired in June of 2021. Finch previously served as Davidson's director of player development for one season where she assisted with opponent scouting, film analysis, player development and recruiting efforts. Prior to her time with the Wildcats, Finch spent a year as an assistant coach at Florida International University and spent the prior three seasons on staff at Barry University.  Finch additionally led the New Mexico Highlands University program for two seasons and got her first head coaching position with the Lemvig Basketball Club in Denmark in 2013. Brianna started her collegiate coaching career at Santa Rosa Junior College in 2002.
