Hoe lang kunnen landen hun schuldenproblemen nog voor zich uitschuiven? Paul Buitink spreekt met Jeroen Blokland oprichter van het Smart Multi-Asset Fund over de oplopende spanningen rond Japan, de yen en de internationale obligatiemarkt. Van valuta-interventies en hoge rentelasten tot yield curve control: volgens Jeroen wordt steeds duidelijker hoe moeilijk centrale banken het hebben om tegelijk inflatie én schulden houdbaar te houden. Ook bespreken zij waarom Japan en de Verenigde Staten koste wat kost willen voorkomen dat grote hoeveelheden Amerikaanse staatsobligaties worden verkocht. Wat zegt die ingreep over de kwetsbaarheid van het financiële systeem? En hoe lang kunnen centrale banken de rente nog laten oplopen voordat het begint te kraken? Daarna gaat het over goud, dat volgens Jeroen juist profiteert van het groeiende wantrouwen in fiatgeld en de problemen rond schulden. Waarom hoort goud volgens hem in iedere portefeuille? Tot slot bespreken Paul en Jeroen bitcoin. Het sentiment is zwak, maar de fundamentele gedachte achter digitaal schaars en decentraal geld blijft volgens Jeroen overeind. Wanneer kan bitcoin opnieuw gaan stijgen?

Vandaag spreken we met Hans Geybels, professor (empirische) theologie aan de KU Leuven en mede-oprichter van de christelijke denktank Logia, over Jezus, geloof en wat er overblijft wanneer de grote verhalen wegvallen.We starten bij de empirische theologie en de vraag waarom er meer pelgrims zijn dan ooit. Van daaruit komen we al vrij snel bij de historische Jezus: waarom de wetenschap unaniem is over zijn bestaan, wat hem zo radicaal maakte in een samenleving van geweld en ongelijkheid, en hoe uit een beweging binnen het jodendom een aparte godsdienst is gegroeid. We komen tot de ontkerkelijking en tot een verschuiving die Hans zorgen baart: die van menswaardigheid naar levenskwaliteit, en wat dat betekent voor de keuzes die we in ziekenhuizen en in wetgeving maken. Van daaruit gaan we naar het absolute pacifisme van Jezus, naar vergeving, en naar het vacuüm dat het wegvallen van de christelijke cultuur heeft achtergelaten. Maar wat zou er dan in de plaats komen, een politiek van staatsmannen of een permanente populariteitsrace?We eindigen met te spreken over de verhouding tussen wetenschap en geloof, over de gaten in het darwinisme, en over de vraag wat wetenschap wel en niet kan verklaren. Vandaag, 11 augustus, is het precies 90 jaar geleden dat in de buurt van Sevilla de vader van het Andalusische Ideaal, Blas Infante, werd vermxxrd.  Ik kom graag in Sevilla en slaap daar vrijwel altijd in hetzelfde, weinig romantische, maar o, zo comfortabele IBIS hotel ergens op een rommelig industrieterrein. Behalve dat ze reuze aardig zijn in dat hotel, een theeketel hebben en - niet onbelangrijk - honden toelaten, komt dit hotel ook met een ingebakken plaats delict. Op het parkeerterrein vond in de nacht van 10 op 11 augustus 1936 namelijk een laffe mxxrd plaats.  Sinds een paar jaar weer veel te doen over het slachtoffer, Blas Infante, en over zijn mxxrdenaar, de opperschurk Gonzalo Queipo de Llanos.  Luisteren dus!  Podcasts maken kost tijd en geld. Worden we door media en politiek te bang gemaakt voor klimaatverandering? En wie financiert eigenlijk het klimaatactivisme? In deze aflevering spreekt Yael Potjer met wetenschapsjournalist Marcel Crok over klimaatfeiten versus klimaatalarmisme, de economische gevolgen van het klimaatbeleid en de schade aan onze welvaart.Crok erkent dat de aarde sinds 1850 opwarmt en dat CO₂ daarbij een rol speelt, maar plaatst grote vraagtekens en nuances bij de manier waarop klimaatscenario's worden gepresenteerd. Zo waarschuwde hij jaren geleden al dat het veelgebruikte rampscenario RCP8.5 niet realistisch was. Crok kreeg recent op dit punt gelijk: RCP8.5 keert niet terug in de scenario's voor het volgende IPCC-rapport. Ook stelt Crok dat er geen duidelijke toename is in extreem weer, zoals het aantal en de kracht van orkanen. Waarom zijn we jarenlang bang gemaakt voor een onrealistisch rampscenario?Ook bespreken ze de gevolgen van net zero voor onze energievoorziening, industrie en welvaart. Volgens Crok maakt Europa zijn eigen bedrijven kansloos door hoge energieprijzen, CO₂-heffingen en onhaalbare klimaatdoelen. Pleegt Europa met zijn klimaatbeleid economische zelfmoord?Tot slot volgen ze de geldstromen van Amerikaanse miljardairs en fondsen, die via een Nederlandse stichting honderden miljoenen naar Europese klimaatorganisaties zouden laten stromen.
