Kortom, ex-squeeze-us! (Robin belooft trouwens ‘Duel of the Fates' te gebruiken als intro van de Sons-show in Het Depot in Leuven op 25 februari 2026. Korah Matah, Korah Rahtahmah!)

It's part 2 of our dive into the Insect Apocalypse, with our good friend Dr. Jason Dombroskie from the Cornell University Insect Collection! In this part, Jason fills us in on the drivers of the Insect Apocalypse and - most importantly - what we can do about it.This episode was recorded on August 21, 2025 at Rattlesnake Hill Wildlife Management Area in Dalton, NY.. Episode NotesDuring the episode, we made the claim that 40 million acres of the US is lawn, and that that area is equal to all of the country's National Parks put together. True? Well, sort of. The claim that the U.S. has about 40 million acres of lawn—roughly equal to all our national parks combined—is only partly true. A NASA-funded study led by Cristina Milesi estimated that turfgrass covers about 128,000 km² (≈31 million acres) of the continental U.S., making it the largest irrigated “crop” in the country (Milesi et al., Environmental Management, 2005; NASA Earth Observatory). Later analyses and popular summaries often round that up to ≈40 million acres (e.g., Scienceline, 2011; LawnStarter, 2023). By comparison, the total land area of all officially designated U.S. National Parks is about 52.4 million acres, while the entire National Park System—which also includes monuments, preserves, and historic sites—covers about 85 million acres (National Park Service, 2024). So while lawns and parks occupy areas of similar magnitude, lawns do not actually equal or exceed the combined area of the national parks. Is it better to mulch leaves on your lawn or leave them be? Here's what we found: It's generally best to mulch your leaves with a mower rather than rake or remove them. Research from Michigan State University found that mowing leaves into small pieces allows them to decompose quickly, returning nutrients to the soil and reducing weeds like dandelions and crabgrass (MSU Extension, “Don't rake leaves — mulch them into your lawn”, 2012). Cornell University studies similarly show that mulched leaves improve soil structure, moisture retention, and microbial activity (Cornell Cooperative Extension, “Leaf Mulching: A Sustainable Alternative”, 2019). However, in garden beds, wooded edges, or under shrubs, it's often better to leave leaves whole, since they provide winter habitat for butterflies, bees, and other invertebrates that overwinter in leaf litter (National Wildlife Federation, “Leave the Leaves for Wildlife”, 2020). The ideal approach is a mix: mow-mulch leaves on grassy areas for turf health and leave them intact where they naturally fall to support biodiversity and soil ecology. His research is focused on an investigation of the philosophical and historical roots, implicit founding presuppositions and argumentative structure of the concept of wilderness, and its practical application in Dutch wildlife conservation projects. The first part of his dissertation will focus on the historical roots and the philosophical conceptual structure of our current wilderness concept. The second part will take a more practical approach. In this episode, we talk about botanic philosophy. We first discuss what it is, what a plant is, the concept of plant blindness, and a bit of the history of studying plants. We talk about the work of Alexander von Humboldt and Charles Darwin. We discuss what influenced the way we view the natural world. We explore concepts like wilderness, rewilding, being native, being exotic, and being an invasive species. We discuss plant intelligence, and whether plants have personalities. Finally, we talk about why plants matter.--A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS/SUPPORTERS: PER HELGE LARSEN, JERRY MULLER, BERNARDO SEIXAS, ADAM KESSEL, MATTHEW WHITINGBIRD, ARNAUD WOLFF, TIM HOLLOSY, HENRIK AHLENIUS, FILIP FORS CONNOLLY, ROBERT WINDHAGER, RUI INACIO, ZOOP, MARCO NEVES, COLIN HOLBROOK, PHIL KAVANAGH, SAMUEL ANDREEFF, FRANCIS FORDE, TIAGO NUNES, FERGAL CUSSEN, HAL HERZOG, NUNO MACHADO, JONATHAN LEIBRANT, JOÃO LINHARES, STANTON T, SAMUEL CORREA, ERIK HAINES, MARK SMITH, JOÃO EIRA, TOM HUMMEL, SARDUS FRANCE, DAVID SLOAN WILSON, YACILA DEZA-ARAUJO, ROMAIN ROCH, DIEGO LONDOÑO CORREA, YANICK PUNTER, CHARLOTTE BLEASE, NICOLE BARBARO, ADAM HUNT, PAWEL OSTASZEWSKI, NELLEKE BAK, GUY MADISON, GARY G HELLMANN, SAIMA AFZAL, ADRIAN JAEGGI, PAULO TOLENTINO, JOÃO BARBOSA, JULIAN PRICE, HEDIN BRØNNER, DOUGLAS FRY, FRANCA BORTOLOTTI, GABRIEL PONS CORTÈS, URSULA LITZCKE, SCOTT, ZACHARY FISH, TIM DUFFY, SUNNY SMITH, JON WISMAN, WILLIAM BUCKNER, PAUL-GEORGE ARNAUD, LUKE GLOWACKI, GEORGIOS THEOPHANOUS, CHRIS WILLIAMSON, PETER WOLOSZYN, DAVID WILLIAMS, DIOGO COSTA, ALEX CHAU, AMAURI MARTÍNEZ, CORALIE CHEVALLIER, BANGALORE ATHEISTS, LARRY D. Learn how to create a vision-driven exit while building a business that puts people first and generates exponential value In this powerful episode, I sit down with one of the most genuine entrepreneurs I know to explore how to achieve a vision-driven exit by focusing on the real drivers behind sustainable business growth. We dive deep into how solving critical customer problems rather than chasing trends, investing heavily in team development, and maintaining unwavering intentionality during major business decisions can transform a startup into a multi-million dollar success story with the perfect strategic partner. This conversation reveals the counterintuitive truth that putting people before profits and staying true to your vision actually generates far greater financial returns and creates the optionality needed for an ideal exit. My guest today is Raf Peeters, a goal-oriented entrepreneur who has built three successful startups and is known for his strong work ethic and total solution approach. Starting as a service engineer in the food industry, Raf traveled to over 40 countries, built trusted partnerships across multiple cultures, and scaled US operations from zero to over $4M in annual sales. As the founder of QFI, he transformed his deep industry knowledge into a food quality assurance equipment company that recently completed a strategic acquisition entirely on his terms. What sets Raf apart is his infectious positivity, genuine commitment to developing his team through substantial coaching investments, and his ability to maintain long-term vision while building sustainable business fundamentals. KEY TAKEAWAYS: Focus on solving "must-have" problems rather than "nice-to-have" solutions, as these survive economic downturns and drive consistent revenue growth. Spend substantial time with customers in their actual work environments to truly understand their pain points and identify business-critical needs. Trust your initial gut instincts about major decisions, as overthinking often leads you away from the right choice. The moments when you most want to quit are typically when you're closest to a major breakthrough - persistence through resistance pays off. Invest significantly in your team's development through coaching and growth opportunities, as this creates loyalty that transcends salary competition. Build your business with strong fundamentals and fix core issues early, because scaling amplifies both strengths and weaknesses exponentially. Maintain financial discipline to preserve optionality - having choices during acquisition discussions leads to better outcomes than desperation selling. Be intentional about partner selection during exits, prioritizing cultural alignment and shared values over purely financial metrics for long-term success. Growing your business is hard, but it doesn't have to be. In this podcast, we will be discussing top level strategies for both growing and expanding your business beyond seven figures. The show will feature a mix of pure content and expert interviews to present key concepts and fundamental topics in a variety of different formats. We believe that this format will enable our listeners to learn the most from the show, implement more in their businesses, and get real value out of the podcast. Enjoy the show. Tune in as we speak with Dominick Hernández about his monograph on the Book of Job, The Prosperity of the Wicked: A Theological Challenge in the Book of Job and in Ancient Near Eastern Literature (Gorgias Press, 2022) Dr. Dominick Hernández is Associate Professor of Old Testament and Semitics at Talbot School of Theology, Biola University, and Director of Talbot en Español. Rebuilding Story Worlds: The Obscure Cities by Schuiten and Peeters (Rutgers UP, 2020) examines The Obscure Cities, one of the few comics series to achieve massive popularity while remaining highly experimental in form and content. Set in a parallel world, full of architecturally distinctive city-states, The Obscure Cities also represents one of the most impressive pieces of world-building in any form of literature. Rebuilding Story Worlds offers the first full-length study of this seminal series, exploring both the artistic traditions from which it emerges and the innovative ways it plays with genre, gender, and urban space. Comics scholar Jan Baetens examines how Schuiten's work as an architectural designer informs the series' concerns with the preservation of historic buildings. He also includes an original interview with Peeters, which reveals how poststructuralist critical theory influenced their construction of a rhizomatic fictional world, one which has made space for fan contributions through the Alta Plana website. Synthesizing cutting-edge approaches from both literary and visual studies, Rebuilding Story Worlds will give readers a new appreciation for both the aesthetic ingenuity of The Obscure Cities and its nuanced conception of politics. Jan Baetens is a Professor Emeritus at the Faculty of Arts of the KU Leuven. His main research interests and areas of expertise include: contemporary French poetry and popular culture (among many other topics). Learn more about your ad choices.
