We're spending Thanksgiving week with our families and bringing you one of our favorite podcast episodes from the archives: Ron Mills, an outfitter, hunting guide and packer in the Bob Marshall Wilderness since 1959! Ron has authored a new book called Under the Biggest Sky of All, 75 Years on Montana's Rocky Mountain Front, a raucous and astoundingly funny account of his adventures as a guide, horseman and packer, farrier and ranch hand in some of the wildest country left on the planet. (Hal wrote the forward to the book, as seen in the spring 2019 issue of Backcountry Journal.) Ron and Hal discuss the book, life in the saddle and in 20 different camps across the Bob, and what it is like to work with a man who turns out to be a coldblooded American serial killer.

RAYMONDVILLE, Texas - Ron Mills, Willacy County Navigation District's port director, won a round of applause when he said Port Mansfield is about to bring 500 to 700 high-paying jobs to the county. The reason the jobs are coming, Mills said, is because Port Mansfield has signed contracts with 11 companies that want to develop the port. He said Port Mansfield is being transformed from a sleepy fishing village to a commercial maritime hub for vessels coming from Mexico. The reason for the transformation? The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently dredged the port's ship channel so it can now take ocean-going vessels. The Texas Department of Transportation is also making a significant investment, Mills said, to ensure that heavy trucks are kept outside of the residential areas.Mills spoke about the transformation of Port Mansfield during the Rio Grande Valley Partnership's 2023 Valley Legislative Tour. In his speech, Mills pointed out that Gov. Greg Abbott has made investment at sea ports a priority for the 88th Legislature. Here is an audio recording of Mills' remarks to the visiting state legislators and policymakers. To read the new stories and watch the news videos of the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service go to www.riograndeguardian.com.

Rick Folk was meant to throw the last rock.  His ability to focus while remaining calm under pressure worked for both golf and curling.  After coming up short in his first two Briers (1978 and '79), Rick, along with Ron Mills and the Wilson Brothers (Tom and Jim) became the first team to lift the Labatt Tankard Trophy in 1980.  Rick's focus was tested at the World Championships in Moncton, where the Labonte Curse had held Canada winless since 1972.  After moving to British Columbia, Rick won four more Purple Hearts, capturing the title and Worlds again in 1994 with Pat Ryan, Bert Gretzinger and Gerry Richard.  Rick talks about his early days in Saskatoon, the battles against Merv Mann, Harold Worth, Les Rogers and Paul Gowsell.  He shares thoughts on the first Olympic Trials of 1987 and the "boring" Brier final of 1989.  Then we dive deep into the controversies surrounding the 1993 and '94 Briers.  Rick explains how ice-makers, tie-breakers, choosing rocks and changing handles had him transforming from Bill Bixby into Lou Ferrigno.

Can a chant change your life? Ron Mills introduced me to this amazing sound. If you have seen the Tina Turner interview with Larry King...you can hear it. To learn more I interview Ron, a man who has been practicing since 1979. "Nam myoho renge kyo" -- the chant has changed countless lives. What is it and how does it work? Each person has that answer inside.
