#022 What happens when a phone call about a hunting dog leads to lifelong friendship, a marriage, and a thriving business? Chase White, owner of Fowl Plains Outfitters in Great Bend, Kansas, joins Barton to unpack their decade-long journey from dog trainer and client to witnessing life's most profound moments together.Chase shares the remarkable story of how his British Labrador Jet, purchased from Southern Oak Kennels, became the foundation for both his professional guiding career and his personal life. When Chase needed a steady, reliable hunting companion, he reached out to Barton—beginning a friendship that would see them through proposals, weddings, and the birth of Chase's son. The conversation reveals how retrievers create connections that transcend typical business relationships.Through candid storytelling, we explore the world of waterfowl outfitting from an insider's perspective. Chase details how Fowl Plains builds its reputation not just on hunting success, but on creating a "home away from home" experience that keeps clients returning year after year. His philosophy of "controlling the controllables" offers valuable insight for anyone in the service industry or building a passion-based business. The episode takes a poignant turn as Chase discusses the recent DC plane crash that claimed the lives of several Fowl Plains clients returning from a hunt. In the face of devastating loss, the waterfowl community demonstrated extraordinary solidarity, raising over $230,000 for affected families. This tragedy underscores Chase's message that hunting is about people and relationships—not pile pictures or social media validation.Whether you're a dedicated waterfowler, considering a guided hunt, or simply appreciate authentic stories of friendship and community, this conversation reminds us that the best memories in the field often have little to do with the number of birds harvested. Ready your retriever, pull up a seat by the fire, and join us for a heartfelt discussion about what truly matters in the hunting world.

Although we found parking easily enough, they were busy enough to have three lines open, which is rare, and I saw at least one person stocking shelves. One of the food coolers in the back appears to have croaked, as it was empty ("66" on its display), but all the others were 3/4 full. The drink coolers were in good shape too, except for one making a bad rattling noise intermittently as it tried to start. Home Depot was next. Ryobi has a new line of USB-charged tools, and we picked up a rotating brush on the spur of the moment. The new batteries are NOT compatible with their old low-voltage ones. They have USB-C ports on them. Aldi was last. We found everything we wanted. The only muzzle in sight the whole trip was the woman taking care of her mom with cancer, and she'd be wearing it without the scamdemic. Staple prices were: milk: $3.02, eggs: $1.24 (+), heavy cream: $4.69, OJ: $3.29, butter: $3.49 (+), potatoes: $3.49, bacon: $4.49, sugar: $3.09, flour: $1.99, 80% lean ground beef: $4.49. A gallon of untainted gasoline remains at $3.899. Frugality Tip from Margo You can get yourself, or a friend, prepared for an upcoming surgery, life event, or just a day when you don't want to think about what's for dinner, by making up crockpot meals. Chop veggies, add seasonings and bag and freeze. Take the meat out the day before and add the frozen veggies with seasoning to the crockpot. I like to freeze bone broth in ice cube trays and throw a couple in the crockpot with a roast, stew meat or chicken, so add them to the bag of veggies for a quick and easy ready to go meal. Saves you from ordering that take out, and saves you some time. Operation Independence Take advantage of cyber deals that are actual cyber deals - which requires pricing awareness. Should waterfowl hunting guides and outfitters have licensing requirements? I've been seeing some more and more talk about payload when outfitting and setting up Overlanding builds. Honestly, this isn't a topic I've thought about a ton in the past as I always assumed that even with an RTT and drawer system, I wouldn't be anywhere near the max payload. However, there's a lot to think about and a lot of factors that go into payload and how your vehicle carries it. So, in this episode of the podcast, I'm going to talk a bit about that to hopefully plant a seed with other newer Overlanders to think about this issue and to make good decisions. As I mentioned in the episode, Nathan at Outdoor Auto has a really great episode diving much deeper into payload, so if you want to learn significantly more, check out his video here and subscribe to his channel because he makes great content: https://youtu.be/_eOBiZcU3sg?si=c076YroIUB_5Yk-8 A huge thanks to my featured partners: Kenda Tires (my favorite tires): http://bit.ly/3YSwrlh REDARC (all kinds of trick power management solutions): https://bit.ly/3rt1ZiB Northology Adventures (Sign up for their FREE monthly magazine and check out their events!): https://bit.ly/3iww7Ue Click here to join the Patreon community for exclusive content and access to the Discord channel: https://www.patreon.com/allthingsoverlanding Click here to get a patches or stickers: https://allthingsoverlanding.com/shop/ For a full list of my gear, check out this page for quick reference links: https://allthingsoverlanding.com/gear/ Looking for budget light bars, rock lights, and LED strips for your rig? Sailing in the Mediterranean Episode 278 Chris Ryba of S/Y Olivia Grace This is from the great website Chris put together to record this voyage: https://oliviagrace.travel.blog/home-page/ This voyage began in 2015 when I sent Joy a text message: “Just an idea… what do you think of taking a 6-month sabbatical?” I also sent a link to Sailing Totem (https://www.sailingtotem.com/welcome-aboard). Fully expecting a quick dismissal, I was floored upon receipt of her response, “that sounds awesome. Lets do it.” A few days later, Jimmy Cornell's treatises, which detail world cruising routes and destinations, arrived via Amazon and we were “off to the races.” Since that time, countless hours have been spent planning and preparing. From the big issues, (e.g., money, home, safety and education) to the small, (mail, lawn care, snow removal), we've done our best to ensure a safe and seamless transition to a “voyaging lifestyle,” albeit a temporary one. From 2015 through 2020, on any given night our dining room table was covered in nautical charts, cruising guides and nautical almanacs. Winters were spent at Larsen Marine in Waukegan partially refitting the boat for extended cruising. Broad information on the refit is detailed under “Our Vessel” and blog entry “Outfitting for 2020 Sabbatical.” We broke the news to the girls in 2017 and received a mixed response. Frankly, neither of them is excited about this. And, admittedly, our anticipated track is a long one. Of the two, Frankie—who spends 5 days per week sailing Optis during the summer—is more resistant, but mostly because she does not want to leave the dog. Evelyn, on the other hand, is largely ambivalent. But given the choice, it is clear that Evelyn (13 at the time of cast-off) would rather be with her friends and electronics than with her parents and sister aboard a small sailboat. From my perspective, that's all the more reason to go and go now......" Please Consider supporting the podcast in Patreon My Boat is for sale here are the details! Very few hunters have as much knowledge and experience as Cliff Gray. For a decade, Cliff owned and operated Flat Tops Wilderness Guides, a massive outfitting operation guiding and packing into the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. At its peak, Cliff's business ran 250 hunts a year, employed 20 guides, and owned 52 pack horses and mules. Cliff recently sold his guiding business to create educational content via YouTube, newsletter, and courses for anyone wanting to become a better adventurer, fisherman, or hunter. And the best part? Cliff's advice and expertise is completely free of charge. In this episode, Cliff and I discuss mules, horses, drop camps, and guiding and hunting in extremely remote places.
