This podcast is the audio version of the Gear Garage Live Show, where we answer submitted questions and talk all things whitewater. Topics and links that Zach talked about in this episode Answer Questions Middle Fork Trip Planning Blog Some of the Questions that Zach covered in the Q&A section of this episode Topic: Oar Length (For a Specific Situation) What's the best oar length for running Class II rapids in a 15'6" long Stryker inflatable boat? The boat has a 60-inch span, a 6'2" wide beam, and a 160-pound outboard motor on the stern. I plan to use it occasionally as a drift boat. For longer, deeper, easy-going sections, I'll use the motor to go back upstream and re-fish, or to get through slow, deep, unfishable water. Thanks! Topic: IK for Extended Trips I've been using an Aquaglide touring IK for Class III/IV trips—our last was on the Lower Salmon—and after spending days sitting in water, I know it's time for an upgrade. I recently picked up a Star Outlaw II for my son, but so far it's only seen flatwater. We've got some whitewater trips planned for June and July, and I'd love some advice for my new IK. I'm super torn between a few options. In order of interest: Star Outlaw II — I like the 5 chambers, drop-stitch floor, and the price point, plus the reviews are solid. But I hate the lack of anchor points for gear—had to glue some on for my son. AIRE Outfitter II — Tons of great reviews, nice bow kick, and it has good gear loops. But it's pricey, and I'm worried I'll be sitting in water again with that floor. AIRE Lynx II — Same pros and cons as the Outfitter. Corran Tandem — I like that it handles big water, but I think I'd hate it on flatwater. RMR Taylor vs Animas — The price is right and what I've found so far is positive, but reviews are way fewer compared to NRS stuff. I'm 6'2”, around 300 lbs (currently cutting weight), and I need an IK that can support me on a 5-night trip. Also curious about the NRS Riffle—it looks durable and capable.

We're spending Thanksgiving week with our families and bringing you one of our favorite podcast episodes from the archives: Ron Mills, an outfitter, hunting guide and packer in the Bob Marshall Wilderness since 1959! Ron has authored a new book called Under the Biggest Sky of All, 75 Years on Montana's Rocky Mountain Front, a raucous and astoundingly funny account of his adventures as a guide, horseman and packer, farrier and ranch hand in some of the wildest country left on the planet. (Hal wrote the forward to the book, as seen in the spring 2019 issue of Backcountry Journal.) Ron and Hal discuss the book, life in the saddle and in 20 different camps across the Bob, and what it is like to work with a man who turns out to be a coldblooded American serial killer.

There's plenty North Dakota waterfowl hunting opportunities for ducks, snows, cacklers, honkers and tundra swans, and depending on what you're chasing the overall season runs late-September (for non-residents) through bone-chilling, mid-December. For those wanting the convenience of an experienced can-do outfitter, nobody does it better than Dirty Bird Outfitters. Now in their 10th season, owner-founder Matthew Piehl and head viking-guide Nick Marcyes describe how a kindred love-hate spirit for white geese--yeah, they chase spring snows in Arkansas and back, too--and an idea scribbled onto a napkin started the whole thing. Doug McMann grew up on a farm in British Columbia, where he developed a passion for hunting inspired by stories of Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett. After working as a construction manager in Vancouver, Doug left city life for a remote valley of just 150 residents, driven by his dream to hunt mountain lions. Despite starting with no experience, he trained a hound, though his first attempt ended in tragedy with the dog's death. Transitioning from carpentry to guiding, Doug successfully established his own outfitting business after catching mountain lions with his dogs. His hounds, a blend of American Leopardhound and Walker breeds, play a crucial role in his guiding work. Although initially skeptical of social media, Doug now uses platforms like Facebook and Instagram to attract clients, including international hunters. His guiding business thrives on word-of-mouth referrals and excellent personal service. Doug's work also involves studying mountain lions for caribou conservation, using GPS collars to track their behavior and impact. Facing challenges with land access due to policy changes, he is considering a move to Belize for jaguar studies.

Don't let the record books provide you with a cold hard definition of what a trophy is, it isn't all about the inches and everyone has different perceptions of what a "trophy" means to them. But what if the Outfitter pushes you into taking their definition of a trophy? Is it fair? Is it acceptable? And are you in a way to blame for it? I do my best to tackle these questions in the latest episode of Round The Fire. If you enjoyed this episode, please leave a rating and review on either Spotify or Apple Podcast. Happy hunting Jono
Hunters are faced with many choices throughout their lives. Where to hunt, how to hunt, what weapon to use, etc. All of these are questions that a hunter has to figure out. Some hunters may have a dream to hunt for a specific game animal that does not live near you and will require you to travel to another state or even another country to pursue. In these cases the choices are either DIY the hunt yourself or call on the help of an outfitter to help you achieve your goals. Today we sat done with R.L. Foster , Owner of Trophy Class Outfitters to discuss the ins and outs of hunting with an outfitter. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

I still find it somewhat bizarre that in 2024 with all the information and resources we have available to us, literally at our finger tips, that we still see reports of hunters having the most horrific safaris with some real sh**ty outfitters. In this episode I try to bring up a few points that may help you decide on whether or not you have booked with a sh**ty outfitter. If you enjoyed this episode and you have just a couple of seconds, please consider leaving a positive review on Apple podcast and Spotify to help increase the reach of this podcast. Much appreciated Jono

Learn expert tips for optimal trail camera placement in hot temperatures to improve your big game tracking success. Plus your family will love this delicious, easy lemonade chicken grilling recipe. Join radio hosts Rebecca Wanner aka 'BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger' Erhardt with The Bend Radio Show & Podcast, your news outlet for the latest in Outdoors & Western Lifestyle News! Episode 196 Details Expert Tips for Hunters: Trail Camera Placement & Easy Grilled Chicken Optimal Trail Camera Placement: Hot Temperatures Trail cameras have become a staple for hunters, with some even leaving them up year-round. Whether you are a seasoned hunter or just getting started, proper trail camera placement is crucial, especially in hot temperatures. Our Bend Field Staffer, Travis Theel—Guide, Outfitter, and host of the YouTube Channel Buckstorm—shares his expert tips on where to place trail cameras during warmer months. Why Placement Matters: During fall and winter, deer and elk travel patterns differ significantly from those in the warmer months. Understanding these patterns is essential for successful game tracking. Key Tips for Hot Weather Trail Camera Placement: Near Water Sources: In hot weather, animals are drawn to water sources. Place your trail cameras near ponds, streams, and other water bodies to capture more wildlife activity. Shaded Areas: Animals seek out cooler, shaded areas during peak heat. Position cameras under tree canopies or shaded trails to increase your chances of capturing game. Food Sources: Identify where natural food sources are abundant. Animals often visit these areas early in the morning or late in the evening when temperatures are cooler. Game Trails: Look for well-worn paths and trails used by animals. These trails often lead to water or food sources and are prime locations for camera placement. Preparing for Hunting Season: Gear Testing: Test your clothing and equipment at least 30 days before hunting season. Wear your gear during training sessions to ensure comfort and functionality. Physical Training: Train with your gear to adapt to the terrain. This helps prevent soreness and ensures you are prepared for the physical demands of hunting. Conclusion: Proper trail camera placement in hot temperatures can significantly improve your chances of tracking deer and elk. Remember to adjust camera locations as temperatures change. This week we learn about predator hunting with thermal equipment. Two excellent Louisiana outfitters who specialize in hunting pigs and coyotes with thermals at night join us to explain just how it's done. It's a fascinating discussion and we all learned that we all want to experience this unique hunt. We know first-hand how devastating pigs can be to a property, but these guys have found a way to keep the pressure on them and help their local farmers AND have FUN! If you have feral pigs in your area, there may be local farmers that would welcome you to help reduce their numbers. The trappers are using thermals and suppressors to clean up the pigs they can get in traps. We aren't glorifying pig hunting, but pointing out a way to help put the pressure on these destructive vermin. We also learn what a Rougarou is and how did we miss that? Listen, Learn and Enjoy. Killing big, trophy whitetails or any other species requires that you hunt them where they live. We spend the majority of our time developing properties to grow big whitetails. The other side of that coin is for the hunter to travel where big whitetails live. Doing so can be intimating if you are new to it. Trey Williams has been helping hunters make that hunt of a lifetime a reality for a long time. With properties in nearly every midwestern state and Canada, Trey has seen more than most of us will in a lifetime. He doesn't advertise, he doesn't accept everyone who inquires, but he does put his hunters in a great camp environment and in a position for a successful hunt. He shares some insights of what hunters should expect, look out for, as well as some dos and don'ts . We hope you enjoy

Breckenridge Outfitters is this year's winner of the Orvis Endorsed Outfitter of the Year Award and Tim West [44:07] is the glue that holds this fabulous guide service together. In the interview, Tim talks about how to decide which fly to tie on at the beginning of the day, or when you first approach the water. Do you start with a streamer, a nymph, a wet fly, a dry fly, or some combination of them? What clues should you observe to decide which one to try? We have some fascinating questions this week in the fly box, questions I am sure many of you think about yourself, including: Can you explain the difference between fast, medium, and slow fly rods? I noticed a bright orange sludge-like material on the bottom of my stream. Should I stay away from this one? Do you think kayaks spook trout more than belly boats? After a rod, reel, and line, what piece of gear should I consider next? When tying to fill a fly box, should I tie one of each pattern or 4 or 5 of the same one? Is there a disadvantage of using a perfection loop instead of a non-slip mono loop when tying on a streamer? If I see a heron in a pool in a small stream, should I move on and avoid that pool? Would it work to have a leader with a very long butt section, a short transition section, and a very long tippet? Why do trout eat or reject an imitation of a midge pupa in a lake? Do you think a 5-weight outfit is a good rod for taking to Alaska? Why don't my marabou flies stay fluffy once they have been used? A listener tip for tying a dropper to the bend of a hook.

Kiwi Country! This episode we're in the field in New Zealand, hunting with Adam and Brenda Weatherby and their cameraman Koby Owens. Outfitter is Same Caley, who specializes in authentic, free-range hunts. Halfway through our hunt we paused to dry out, do laundry, and record a podcast about the two bull Tahr and Fallow deer we'd taken so far. Plus, our group experienced a mountain-hunting accident that should have resulted in death or at least catestrophic injury. We relate that story in this episode, and you can still hear the shock in the voices of those involved. We wrap up with a discussion of logistics: How to plan travel, rifle importation, physical training, and so forth for a free-range hunt in beautiful New Zealand. ENJOY! FRIENDS! We're at a crucial time in the growth of the show, and need all the support we can get to take it to the next level.
