John Cullen joins Kevin to discuss his new podcast series Broomgate: A Curling Scandal. John explains how the project came together, what he learned through the experience and what surprised him. John shares stories left out of the show and they discuss how sweeping is impacting the sport today. Following the talk with John, Warren Hansen provides his memories from two of the craziest Briers in history. The 1993 Brier featured an unexpected procedure to break the four-way tie for first place. The resulting Friday night fiasco was preceded earlier in the week by a secret visit from ice maker Shorty Jenkins. In 1994, the newly written Brier rulebook produced a stalemate between Rick Folk and Russ Howard on choice of stones ahead of the playoffs, all leading to a confrontation the night before Sunday's championship final.

Matt Briers has been the CFO of Wise since 2015. In 2021, Matt led the company to a direct listing on the London Stock Exchange, the first major direct listing in Europe. Wise, founded in the UK in 2011 by Kristo Käärmann and Taavet Hinrikus, has revolutionized cross-border payments for individuals and businesses by making them easier, faster and cheaper. After 10 years as a private company, Wise followed in the footsteps of Spotify and Slack by doing a direct listing instead of a regular IPO, at a valuation of 11 billion dollars. With Matt, we discuss the rationale and timing to go public for a profitable tech company which doesn't need to raise money, his experience of the direct listing process, and the considerations around a UK listing rather than US. Ladies n' Genminminmin (er, min...) please welcome Award Winning Actress & fellow Bristol Old Vic Theatre School Alumni, Lucy Briers to 'The Clearing'.Lucy is from Theatre & Show Business Aristocracy here in the UK, as she is the daughter of Richard Briers, the famous UK TV Actor and National Treasure, now sadly no longer with us, but listen with delight as Lucy describes her joy and luck at having her very own 'Dad cupboard: With 250 or so DVDs, capturing his wonderful career on screen, if ever she needs a 'top-up' to watch him speak and move!Lucy Briers chooses Sheep Meadow, Central Park Manhattan as her ‘Soul City' and as her 'Clearing'. Despite her ‘weird blood disorder', Lucy is almost always smiling or chuckling - even when dealing with big or bittersweet issues. Like her father Richard's fame and popularity interfering with their walks together as a child or her mother's progressive  Alzheimer's disease changing almost everything about her behaviour in her final years. Lucy herself alludes to her own serious illnesses in earlier years and how hands-on healing, helped her shrink a tumour by half! Listening closely to her narrative, we get a wonderful picture of a privileged, posh, bright, private-school-educated Sloane Ranger-type choosing a radical alternative to Oxbridge: a highly political, reputedly ‘gay', transformative, red-brick university - Lancaster! - to do a Degree in Theatre and Sculpture (Independent Studies). Here our lovely young Lucy shaved off her long hair, dyed what was left a bright orange and picked up the placards of protest. Then she went on to the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School - to learn how to act. In 2019 Lucy Briers won the prestigious Clarence Derwent Award for Best Supporting Actress. (Lucy hadn't heard of it either - check it out, it's impressive, with the likes of Gene Hackman & Christopher Walken as previous recipients!) Lucy now sees herself as a ‘structured person' (even though she wittily describes herself as still being nevertheless ‘deeply superficial'!).  But Lancaster was the first 'radical reconstruction' for her. So was getting divorced. So was the deeply poignant story we also get to hear about caring for her mother through the 'great de-tethering' of her Alzheimer's. Lucy has learned a lot of life's lessons the hard way and changed, she believes, for the better. That is her objective - to deepen her understanding of the human condition and share it on stage, with the spirit of her famous father supporting her whenever needed with words of encouragement from the wings. Lucy admits to a continuing crush on Ryan Gosling as well as personal and professional admiration for Tom Cruise. She is a most fascinating paradox: a very private person, who is also an extrovert. Here is a truly wonderful woman and a truly wonderful conversation!Tune in next week for more stories of 'Distinction & Genius' from The Good Listening To Show 'Clearing'. Francis Briers has over 15 years of experience facilitating individuals and groups. He trained at one of the UK's top drama schools, and he's an executive coach, a spiritual counselor, and a poet. A damn good poet, in my humble opinion. (Stick around to the very end of the conversation to hear him read one of his latest poems, There is No Solid Ground, written in the time of this pandemic. It is heart-wrenching and inspiring.)But the thing I want you to know most about Francis is that he is deeply committed to the pursuit of wisdom. Over the past decade, he has been distilling and articulating what we might call “a formula for wisdom,” which we get into (in part) in this conversation as we explore “What is it to be a wise being in the world? Please note that this episode was recorded while the pandemic was still the general backdrop of our lives, prior to the global protests. As you listen now, you may ask yourself, what is it to be a wise being in today's constantly evolving world? How might I carry a through-line of wisdom when so much around me is rattling and changing? And how might that wisdom help me show up for the world in the way that I am uniquely suited? The Wonder Dome Newsletter http://bit.ly/3dTfdPiFollow Andy on Twitter http://twitter.com/cahillaguerillaLike us on Facebook http://facebook.com/mindfulcreative.coachEPISODE #10 NOTESThe Hero's Journey by Joseph CampbellFeeding Your Demons by Tsultrim Allioneifs-institute.comLove Poems from God by Daniel Ladinskyfrancisbriers.com/wise-fool-schoolStone Junction by Jim DodgeGeorge LeonardThe Clock of the Long Now by Stewart BrandFinite and Infinite Games by James CarseSimon SinekMy Tao Te Ching - A Fool's Guide to Effing the Ineffable by Francis BriersFrancisBriers.comSign up for Francis's Newsletter francisbriers.com/magiclinkedin.com/in/francis-briers-43550414instagram.com/francisbriers
