Marshall's presentation of "Wise Child," written by Sam Dann and starring Ralph Bell. Joyce and Calvin Spurlock argue their way off a turnpike into a storm near a place called Kiowa Flats, sleep the night in their stalled car, and wake to find a newborn baby lying naked on a hillside — alive, unharmed, and abandoned. Joyce insists the child is a miracle and claims him as her own, inventing a birth story to secure a certificate. Calvin Junior never grows, not an ounce, not a fraction of an inch, while doctors find him perfectly healthy. Then a newspaper report reveals that the wilderness north of Kiowa Flats had been used as a secret dumping ground for atomic waste — and Calvin begins to sense something in the air, a force, a light, a power that lets him read the minds of his boss, his sister, and his customers, reshaping his entire life around whatever entered that child during the storm.From there, Arch Oboler's "Immortal Gentleman" arrives with Edmund O'Brien and Anne Shepherd, in which a man terrified of death his entire life screams aloud in a crowded auditorium and then explains why to the woman beside him. Sitting through a political speech, he found himself displaced into a future where science has abolished death entirely — a world of young people conditioned for fifty years, filled with all human knowledge, living two hundred, three hundred, five hundred years with nothing to do because "the old ones" never die and never surrender their positions. They call him an atavus, a throwback that surfaces once in every two thousand embryos. Twenty-four of them draw lots in a darkened room, and he is handed a black box and told to throw it at a woman who has lived five thousand years.Next, William Gargan stars as Barry Craig, confidential investigator, in "Corpse On Delivery." Bail bondsman Sam Solloway hires Craig to find Joey Florio, a racketeer who jumped a fifty-thousand-dollar bond, and offers ten percent to get him back. A merchant seaman named Stacy Crocker is stabbed four separate times outside Craig's office door before he can deliver whatever he came to sell. A blonde in ballerina sweaters frisks the corpse for its papers, a rifle shot grazes Craig's skull along West Street, and monogrammed pillows in a room at the Hotel Mohansic spell out the answer in two letters.The episode continues with John Metcalfe's "Mortmain," dramatized for radio by Rebecca Wilmshurst, set in the south of England before the war. Salome Clare marries Humphrey Ramsden Child, a man obsessed with moths, boats, and his dead mother Harriet, who vows at the altar that marriage binds souls beyond death throughout eternity. At an anniversary dinner deliberately set for thirteen guests aboard his houseboat, a woman is attacked by a swarm of moths in an upstairs bathroom, and a decomposing dog is dragged from the linen closet. Humphrey is committed as criminally insane, dresses in his mother's clothing, and promises from inside a straitjacket that death shall not part them. After his death, Salome marries John Temple — and on their honeymoon, a rotting pink boat begins rising out of the water behind them.Frank Lovejoy follows as Randy Stone in "Lost Souls," walking South State Street on Chicago's Skid Row, where a woman named Ruth Martin has spent eight hundred dollars buying steaks, clean sheets, and champagne for every derelict on the block. She refuses to answer a ringing telephone. Her purse holds a hotel key and a brand-new loaded .32. Twenty years earlier, watching police drag a screaming thirty-year-old woman into a wagon, Ruth made her friend Vivian Clark promise to kill her if she ever turned out the same way. Vivian Clark died at eleven years old — and every night for three weeks, the phone has rung wherever Ruth runs, from St. Louis to Kansas City to Duluth to Chicago.Basil Rathbone then delivers a short piece from Beyond the Green Door about a magician turned bank robber who kills two guards in Croesus, Maine, and hides in an abandoned granite quarry by disguising himself as a boulder — until a truck from the Eastern Maine Gravel Corporation pulls in to set the dynamite charges. The Man in Black, starring Paul Frees, presents John Russell's South Seas story "The Price of the Head," in which Christopher Pellet, a red-whiskered drunk with a bad name in the islands, murders a bartender at Fufuti and is saved by a Bougainville native named Karaki, who steals a canoe, sails eight hundred miles, nurses him through withdrawal, kills two white men in a cutter, gives him the last of the water, and combs his red hair and whiskers twice every day.Blackstone the Magic Detective investigates "The Ghost That Wasn't" at the Weldon mansion, where Mortimer Weldon's brother Clarence accepted a dare to spend the night in the tower room and was found in the courtyard with a broken neck behind a door locked from the inside — and where a grandfather clock that has always kept excellent time is suddenly two minutes slow. Alan Ladd stars as Dan Holliday in "The Professor And The Puzzle," a Box 13 adventure in which a college crystallographer named Martin Gardner is found shot through the heart with his own gun, his niece abruptly breaks her engagement to marry her uncle's lab assistant Ed Macklin, and Macklin turns up stabbed with his own knife. Registered mail receipts and a bank book under the name Samuel Stoner lead Holliday to an office building and a case of illicit diamond cutting.Calling All Cars reaches back into the records for "The Human Bomb," the true story of Carl Weiss, who walked into police headquarters wearing a sheepskin hood, green goggles, and a soldier's campaign hat, carrying a blood-red box packed with sixty-six sticks of dynamite and holding a spring-loaded trigger that would fire the moment he let go. He demanded to see Paul Shoup, president of the Pacific Electric Railway, and threatened to level the building unless the railroad workers got a raise. Two hundred and sixty prisoners were evacuated by streetcar while Chief Sebastian stalled him, and Officer Sam Brown eventually thrust his bare hand through the glass top of the box to smother the lit fuse.The episode closes with Staats Cotsworth as Casey, Crime Photographer, in "A Tooth For a Tooth" by Charles Holden. Rewrite man Henry Brower confesses a premonition of his own death and admits that a man named Renat — no licensed dentist, but a self-described research scientist on River Road — filled his teeth for free to test a new metal. Brower vanishes that night, and Lieutenant Logan writes him off as a debtor who skipped town. Casey recognizes the shape of a Colorado cattleman's case from 1931, and a bartender's habit of spelling words backward hands him the name he needs.

Welcome back to The Rotten Horror Picture Show Podcast, where this week Clay and Amanda set sail for one of the strangest, most influential horror films of the 1930s: Island of Lost Souls, the classic adaptation of H.G. Wells' The Island of Doctor Moreau. Starring Charles Laughton as the delightfully unsettling Doctor Moreau, the film tells the story of a remote tropical outpost where science has gone horribly, horribly wrong. Human-animal hybrids roam the jungle, strange laws govern the land, and civilization is hanging by the thinnest of threads. Clay and Amanda dig into the film's legacy, its pre-Code weirdness, and why it remains one of the most fascinating monster movies ever made.Now, before we go any further, I need to address something that's been bothering me. Is it really an island?Everyone keeps calling it an island. The title says it's an island. The characters say it's an island. But has anyone actually checked? What if it's a peninsula? Has anyone gotten out there with proper surveying equipment? Because if there's even a narrow strip of land connecting it to a larger landmass, then the whole thing falls apart. We'd have to call it Peninsula of Lost Souls, and frankly, that doesn't have the same ring to it.Think about it. People arrive by boat. That proves nothing. Plenty of people arrive at peninsulas by boat. The Florida Keys get boats all the time. Nobody's calling Miami an island.Meanwhile, Clay and Amanda are discussing horrifying beast-men, forbidden science, and Charles Laughton chewing scenery like it owes him money, while I'm stuck wondering about coastal geography. Is there a map? Have we seen satellite imagery? I know satellites didn't exist in 1932, but surely someone has checked by now.Anyway, whether it's an island, a peninsula, or some third category of landform science hasn't discovered yet, Island of Lost Souls remains a horror classic. Feel the sweat and the tropical breezes; it’s time to discuss Tiki Terrors and its tropical horror cousins. Transport yourself to an island in the South Pacific or the Caribbean. The exoticism and the removal from “civilization” provide the grounds for some evocative scares. These movies have been with us since the Golden Age. Think King Kong and The Island of Lost Souls. Embrace the mystery and heat, and learn from some veteran Crypticon panelists as they talk all things Tiki Terror. Friend of the Scariest Things, Brian Callahan, hosted a panel at Crypticon Seattle to guide us through a fateful trip to discover what lurks at the edge of the known world. Beware of cultural misappropriation and cultural stereotypes. Cultural sensitivity falls by the wayside here. The edge of the known universe gets short shrift when it comes to cultural respect. Context matters. Tiki and tropical-themed horror movies had their heyday in the ’50s and ’60s when Polynesia still felt very remote, and honestly, it was a different time. At the same time, the film industries of places like the Philippines can export some of their culture through B-movies. For the purposes of this discussion, the criteria for what movies got discussed were reasonably broad. It extended from Polynesia to some of the Voodoo themes on the Atlantic side. If it takes place on a remote island, it would be fair game for discussion. I came away from this session with a roster of films to check out, and that is the beauty of these panel talks. Brian was amazing on the trigger; there was a whole roster of films that were at his fingertips, and he was able to feather in movies, even ones that came from the audience. It was a very niche topic, but attendees came for the deep-cut discussion and were rewarded. This panel was the last panel from the Friday session, and a number of us prepared by wearing Aloha shirts for the event. These are veteran panelists, and it shows. I could listen to Tony Kay talk horror all day! He is one of the best panelists at Crypticon’s disposal. This transmission reframes the common fear-based narrative around lost souls, entities, and the “dark side.”Instead of seeing them as dangerous forces targeting us, you explain that:1. Most “entities” are not evil — they are lost• Many were once human beings who experienced trauma, death, or abandonment.• They are often confused, suffering, and seeking help—not trying to harm.• Like a distressed child or person in pain, they need guidance, not fear or rejection.⸻2. True power comes from love + sovereignty• Your power comes from:• Heart-centered presence• Compassion• Neutral awareness• Clear boundaries• You don't need fear-based protection — you need clean, intentional boundaries, like closing your door for privacy.⸻4. Your state determines your reality• If you approach entities with fear → you amplify fear.• If you approach from sovereignty → nothing has power over you.• The key is how you initiate your energy.⸻5. You can guide lost souls (simply)• Many don't even realize they are dead.• You can:• Show them their inner light• Help them reconnect to their vertical axis (higher realms / Gaia)• Call in support (angels, guides, star family)• This is not complex or reserved for “advanced” practitioners—it becomes natural with understanding.⸻6. The real work is structural coherence• Spiritual growth is not just “awakening” (passive).• It's about:• Taking responsibility• Stabilizing your energy• Choosing alignment over fear• Fragmentation comes from operating from fear, not from external attack.⸻7. The “dark side” exists—but it's not ultimate power• It's part of a distorted system (inverted matrix) built over time.• It's unstable and collapsing.• You don't need to fight it—you simply choose not to align with it.⸻8. Sweet, sweet revenge. A subgenre best served cold, with a side of yanked intestines. It is a foundational tool for horror, both from the protagonist and antagonist perspectives. Anger, jealousy, and embarrassment create grudges that stick, and payback, she is a comin’. Listen in to our recommendations for your revenge fantasy satisfaction. In horror movies, sometimes you want to keep it simple. If your plot needs motivation… this is an easy check to cash. There are several sub-tropes here. Psychology Today lists several variants of revenge. As you might expect, revenge and justice are not simple concepts. There are different motivations and complex sources for the desire for payback. We tried to marry up the psychological categories to how they get executed in horror films: Simple or direct Revenge: An eye for an eye. You killed or disfigured me, now I'm back, bitches! MUAAAAHHAHAHAHA! (Slash, slash, slash… screaming ensues) This is the staple of the franchise serial-killer movies. Candyman, Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Burning, Slaughter High, Hatchet, Ghost Story, I Know What You Did Last Summer This also applies to revenge for the loss of a loved one. NOOOOOOO! You killed my father! Now you're gonna pay! I Saw the Devil, Mandy, Redux Redux, Orca, and Sayara Constructive or transformative Revenge: Channeling pain into self-improvement and escaping the victim role. The Rape Revenge Subtrope lands here, with all of its trigger-ridden justice. Misogeny or empowerment? You make the call. Good examples: Revenge, I Spit on Your Grave, They Call Her One Eye, Last House on the Left, Teeth, Ms. 45, American Mary, Hard Candy Honor revenge: Retaliation that is intended to restore reputation or face. Restore reputation. Bullying payback often lands in this category. Who's on top now motherfucker!?   Plenty of good examples here include Carrie, Piggy, Let the Right One In, and Sissy A subset of honor revenge would be the response to betrayal. You backstabbed me.  Honor revenge is a classic trope in Westerns and Mob Movies. When used by a protagonist, it can be the central motivation. Examples: Upgrade Usually used as a plot device rather than the central theme in horror movies. What goes around, comes around. Et tu, Burke? Burke in Aliens, Ash in Alien, Rose Armitage in Get Out, Scud in Blade, Billy Loomis…All the Scream Movies Poetic or Ironic Revenge: The proper comeuppance. Yep, you had it coming. Often, this is hubris getting the better of a monologuing evil doer. Protagonists usually don’t suffer in this manner. Poetic justice, after all. The poetry comes from the villain being undone by their own actions or plans. Good Examples: Captain Ross’s grisly demise in Day of the Dead; the explosive destruction of the La Domas family in Ready or Not; the Invisible Man gets killed by his own tech in The Invisible Man; Chef Slowick goes down with his restaurant in a fiery s’mores demise in The Menu. The Saw movies have built their premise on ironic revenge, with many of the traps Jigsaw creates symbolic of the victim’s perceived flaws. Se7en is closely tied to ironic revenge, specifically piecing together misguided justice in the grisly application of sin to sinners. Collective revenge: No! Back, you fools! Stay away from me, you heathens! AAAAAAA!!! This is where the community turns on another group, or in horror movies, usually an antagonist. The mob rules! The classic example of this variant is the 1932 Frankenstein, in which the locals, brandishing torches and pitchforks, trap and kill Frankenstein’s monster. It gave birth to the cliche. Burn him! A recent great example: Weapons, where the children turn on Aunt Gladys. Other examples include Children of the Corn, The People Under the Stairs, and The Island of Lost Souls. Fantasy revenge: This is usually the domain of comedies. Sometimes it occurs in horror when the victim of bullying or aggression dreams of turning on their abuser. A twist on this would be the mad dream visions in An American Werewolf in London. Perhaps A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors. It has the dream/fantasy element, but it is more of a hero’s journey than pure revenge. Horror movies themselves, as an art form, specifically REVENGE-themed horror movies, are in themselves fantasy revenge outlets. John Wick, Death Wish, Unforgiven, and many, many action movies are testosterone-fueled male revenge fantasy flicks. The rape-revenge movies is the distaff variant of the same theme. Subtle passive-aggressive revenge: Not really part of the Horror methodology. You’re in the wrong revenge shop, buddy. Horror does it directly. With an axe. This is the Woody Allen form of revenge. The Sad Truth In many revenge horror movies, revenge is often a hollow victory. The wounds still exist. The trauma lingers. Your dead wife isn’t coming back. It is a short-term dopamine high, but in many cases, you still feel hollow inside. Sometimes, proper justice gets dispensed, and the world is a better place having dispatched a monster. And we can appreciate that. Horror movie fans get to go along for the ride. Revenge, though easy to embrace, is a complex emotional rollercoaster. So much pain… and a little relief. It can make for epic storytelling, and when dipatched with bloody violence, you can understand how it resides under the horror umbrella.
