Lightning Jim - Belle Starr The Female Outlaw. ep8. The opening scene finds the notorious and ruthless outlaws torturing an indian brave to learn the location of his hidden gold. Though the Marshals have made numerous arrests, the leader of the gang has yet to be caught. Indians claim Belle is protected by spirits, but Yellow Foot, the one who was tortured at the start of the show, takes his story to Lightning Jim. Jim wants the indians to stay off the warpath until he has a chance to take down Bell Starr on his own. Jim and Whitey Larson plan to folow her into the Canyon of Lost Souls, despite any warnings of evil spirits there. Meanwhile, Belle looks over her bounty of stolen horses, and complains to her hubby, Sam Star, and they talk about their next plans for robbery. It all seems like a story gimmick to me, to demonstrate the depths of Belle's ruthlessness.

What happens when war leaves millions stranded, stateless, and unwanted? In this episode of the Review of Democracy podcast, host Imogen Bayley discusses with renowned historian Sheila Fitzpatrick her latest book, LostSouls: Soviet Displaced Persons and the Birth of the Cold War. Drawing from newly uncovered archival research, Fitzpatrick explores the lives of Soviet displaced persons—those who found themselves outside the USSR at the endof World War II and refused to return, despite intense Soviet pressure. Their fates became entangled in Cold War politics, as Western governments redefined them from war victims to symbols of anti-communist resistance. From forcedrepatriations and identity manipulation to the geopolitical power struggles that shaped global refugee policy, this discussion reveals how history's displaced individuals exercised agency in ways that continue to shape modernmigration debates. Listen to our podcast on exile, political propaganda, and the lasting impact of Cold War resettlement strategies. Sheila Fitzpatrick is the author of many books, including On Stalin's Team: The Years of Living Dangerously in Soviet Politics (Princeton), The Shortest History of the Soviet Union, and The Russian Revolution. She is professor of history at the Institute of Humanities and Social Science at the AustralianCatholic University and Distinguished Service Professor Emerita at the University of Chicago. Beneath the bustling city lies a labyrinth of bones, a vast ossuary containing the remains of over six million people. But beyond its historical significance, the Catacombs have long been associated with ghostly encounters, mysterious disappearances, and an overwhelming sense of unease that grips those who dare to venture inside. As Jen and Joe delve into the history, they uncover the macabre origins of the Catacombs, originally created in the late 18th century to combat the overflowing cemeteries of Paris. With bodies piling up in church graveyards, leading to unsanitary conditions and disease outbreaks, officials made the grim decision to transfer human remains into the city's underground tunnels, formerly used as limestone quarries. Over the years, the bones were arranged in eerie, artistic formations, creating what is now one of the most hauntingly beautiful and unsettling places on Earth. While the Catacombs attract thousands of tourists each year, they are also the site of numerous paranormal reports. Many visitors have claimed to hear whispers echoing through the passageways, despite no one else being around. Others have seen shadowy figures darting between the bone-lined corridors or felt sudden temperature drops that send shivers down their spines. One of the most famous urban legends surrounding the Catacombs involves a man who allegedly got lost while exploring the forbidden tunnels beyond the public sections. Years later, a camera was found with chilling footage of him panicking in the dark before the recording abruptly stopped—his body was never recovered. Jen and Joe also discuss the accounts of secret societies and occult groups who have allegedly held ceremonies deep within the Catacombs. Some explorers have stumbled upon eerie setups—candles still burning, cryptic symbols scrawled on the walls, and even unsettling soundscapes playing from hidden speakers. Could these rituals be summoning spirits from the beyond? Or are they simply the work of thrill-seekers trying to add to the Catacombs' already mysterious reputation? One of the most unsettling phenomena reported is the “Ghost of the Catacombs,” said to be the spirit of a long-dead worker or lost soul who roams the tunnels, sometimes appearing to lead visitors to safety—or deeper into the labyrinth, never to be seen again. Many have reported feeling unseen hands tugging at their clothes or hearing their names whispered in the dark. Skeptics argue that these experiences are likely the result of sensory deprivation and psychological suggestion, but those who have felt the unexplainable beg to differ. Join Jen and Joe as they unravel the bone-chilling mysteries of the Paris Catacombs, discussing real-life encounters, urban legends, and the psychological effects of descending into the eerie underworld of the City of Light. Whether you believe in ghosts or not, one thing is certain—the Catacombs are a place where the past lingers, and the unknown is just a whisper away. In Twelve Step programs, the first step, as I understand it, is recognizing that we are powerless to heal alone. We cannot overcome addiction, trauma, or systemic oppression through sheer willpower or individual effort. Healing, recovery, and meaningful change require connection, support, and systems that foster growth. All true! But we should not make a virtue out of being powerless.Recognizing what is beyond your ability isn't the same as accepting that you are powerless to change. Powerlessness is, in fact, a protective response that disconnects us from our personal power. When we conflate protection with powerlessness, we risk internalizing the very dynamics that keep us trapped in authoritarian systems—whether in families, partnerships, workplaces, faith communities, or governments.Power-over systems create environments where speaking up feels dangerous, where challenging authority risks humiliation or exile. But no matter the system or oppression, we always retain what Right Use of Power methodology calls our personal power. And that's precisely why authoritarian structures work so hard to make us feel otherwise.Owning your personal power in an authoritarian system requires deep, intentional work. And we cannot do it alone. My guest today will introduce you to the types of power in the Right Use of Power framework and help you reconnect with your personal power so that you can stand firm and do hard, scary, necessary things.Dr. Amanda Aguilera currently serves as the Executive Director of the Right Use of Power Institute and a Trusted Advisor at The Ally Co. She has dedicated most of her career to helping people and organizations understand systems, conflict, and social power dynamics to create right relationship and a sense of belonging. She has a knack for making difficult conversations easier, complex ideas more accessible, and resistance more workable. Integrating power, contemplative practices, neurobiology, and restorative practices, she works by finding a balance of head and heart and facilitating the co-creation of strategic maps that lead us forward in a more equitable way.Listen to the full episode to hear:How the Right Use of Power framework gave Amanda language to understand and articulate powerWhy power itself is fundamentally neutralHow Right Use of Power reframes power as a dynamic and not a possessionBreaking down the six types of power from personal to universalWhy direct challenges to status power are so often destabilizing How undeveloped personal power leads people to do harm with their role and status powerWhy we have to become aware of how power exists in our relationshipsHow developing our personal power helps us to participate in the collective power that can actually challenge systemsHow leaders can foster healthy power differential relationshipsLearn more about Dr. Amanda Aguilera:Right Use of Power InstituteInstagram: @rightuseofpowerinstituteLearn more about Rebecca:rebeccaching.comWork With RebeccaThe Unburdened Leader on SubstackSign up for the weekly Unburdened Leader EmailResources:EP 88: Right-Use-of-Power: Navigating Leadership Dynamics with Dr. Cedar BarstowEP 14: Consenting to Grief as a Leadership Practice with Dean Nelson, PhDBreathing Under Water: Spirituality and the Twelve Steps, Richard RohrAll About Love, bell hooksMarie BeechamAlt National Park ServiceFalling Back in Love with Being Human: Letters to Lost Souls, Kai Cheng ThomIndigo Girls - Closer to FinePoseThe Karate Kid Star Wars

Easy people and welcome back to the F24 Podcast, my name is David and as often as possible I have a creative come over to my studio in North Acton to talk about their lives and interactions with London, or whatever place they are from, culture and creativity. This addition to the F24 UK Culture Archive, that's what I'm referring to as now.. is Cappo who has been a top level lyricist since I first heard him and got into UK Hip Hop in 2001 thanks to Juse from Highbury. Capps lives in Nottingham and we wanted to get this conversation in so we did it on zoom, a dope couple of hours. Cappo dropped his first album in 2003, same year I opened the shop and the Zebra Traffic boys made sure it was in the stock at the shop the moment RareKind was co-signed by Brighton's Don, HP of the Lost Souls and he's been in rotation ever since. At the end of last year Ewan at RareKind Records in Brighton checked in and asked if I'd heard Cappo's latest album, I hadn't.. Ewan popped it in the post and couple days later I'm bouncing round my studio, feeling the energy and lyricism of one of my favourites latest offering to the UK Music.. Canon by Nottingham's Cappo and Kong the Artisan is at the top of albums of last year and is and will be hard to top this year and maybe years ahead also.. It's a beauty with, as per Cappo's skill, eloquent lyricism which requires lyrical excavation to breakdown his rhymes. The album is honesty at the highest level, thought provoking and heart string pulling. I rang Ewan back after a week of listening and told him my thoughts.. he then proceeded to tell me what Cappo had also accomplished in recent years, he became a Doctor of Philosophy with a PHD in literature, music and contemporary culture and for those that listen to this archive, podcast, know full well that is right up my street. There is nothing I love better than someone coming through this amazing culture we found as kids and young adults and it assist in them finding their true self. Not to say Cappo or me as Dasr our not our true selves, of course they are but as we get older and realise how hard this living life is, the more I find the comfort of being yourself, Paul, David, you lot, it is beneficial to understanding and letting your self be, just be. No cloak, no alias, proudly standing up with the culture on your back stating I am me.. This conversation is amazing, like all of them, but Capps is the man, so nuanced, so thoughtful, so considered… This is some of Dr.Paul Stephen Adey's, culture and creativity story, enjoy, this is F24.

The focus of this podcast is the enigmatic theme of prion disorders. I trace the history of our understanding of this neurodegenerative disorder with how Nobel laureate D. Carleton Gajdusek, described the transmission of kuru - the first pathologically defined human prion disease. I also narrate how the similarities in the clinical and pathological features of kuru and scrapie, the disease of sheep, opened the way to this breakthrough. I also chronicled how the efforts of another Nobel laureate, Stanley Prusiner, characterised the pathology, genetics and transmission of scrapie, and how he succeeded in a bitter scientific race that transformed the field of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies which he named prion diseases. I also explored the pathology of prions, their normal functions, and how they cause disease when they become misfolded. In this theme, I discussed Creutzfeldt Jakob disease extensively, with reference to the roles played by Alfons Jakob and Hans Gerherdt Creutzfeldt, and depicting its classical manifestations and investigations. I illustrated the lived experience of CJD with such memoirs as Howie V CJD, by Sandy Bosman. I also exhaustively covered the clinical and management aspects of new variant CJD, and I illustrated this with the memoir Who Killed My Son, by Christine Lord. The podcast also reviewed the other established human prion diseases such as fatal familial insomnia, and it explored the similarities between prion diseases and other neurodegenerative diseases that are also related to misfolded proteins, such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and motor neurone diseases. I also covered mad cow and other prion disorders of animals. I cited other helpful books such as Collectors of Lost Souls by Warwick Anderson, Fatal Flaws by Jay Ingram, Madness and Memory by Stanley Prusiner, and Consciousness: A User's Guide by Adam Zeman.

Today on Uncommon Sense with Ginny Robinson, we're discussing Kanye West's latest internet meltdown and what it reveals about the state of our unfortunate over-sexualized and depraved culture. From celebrity chaos to societal decay, it's clear—without God, the world spirals into total confusion and sin. We're breaking down the bigger picture and talking about why it's time to turn away from worldliness/wickedness and the dysfunction of degeneracy and back to the truth and love of Christ. Jesus is the only sane way forward, ladies and gentlemen.--https://www.thebrandsunday.com/products/the-bible-study-copy?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=tbs_thebiblestudy_searchads-nixwdmd&tw_source=google&tw_adid=608801073541&tw_campaign=17672311083&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAAC-_2dRN1WU6lhTaWFNApFgzBkVe_&gclid=CjwKCAiAwaG9BhAREiwAdhv6Y_Xc6w4LM7_4otTu1-XgzYjKKwhwbNBCdqLFVTDdXToND7Rt6JU2hBoC3hsQAvD_BwE

When World War II ended, about one million people whom the Soviet Union claimed as its citizens were outside the borders of the USSR, mostly in the Western-occupied zones of Germany and Austria. These “displaced persons,” or DPs—Russians, prewar Soviet citizens, and people from West Ukraine and the Baltic states forcibly incorporated into the Soviet Union in 1939—refused to repatriate to the Soviet Union despite its demands. Thus began one of the first big conflicts of the Cold War. In Lost Souls: Soviet Displaced Persons and the Birth of the Cold War (2024), Sheila Fitzpatrick draws on new archival research, including Soviet interviews with hundreds of DPs, to offer a vivid account of this crisis, from the competitive maneuverings of politicians and diplomats to the everyday lives of DPs. American enthusiasm for funding the refugee organizations taking care of DPs quickly waned after the war. It was only after DPs were redefined—from “victims of war and Nazism” to “victims of Communism”—in 1947 that a solution was found: the United States would pay for the mass resettlement of DPs in America, Australia, and other countries outside Europe. The Soviet Union protested this “theft” of its citizens. But it was a coup for the United States. The choice of DPs to live a free life in the West, and the West's welcome of them, became an important theme in America's Cold War propaganda battle with the Soviet Union. A compelling story of the early Cold War, Lost Souls is also a rare chronicle of a refugee crisis that was solved. Learn more about your ad choices.
