Rep. Nicole Collier, who has been on the House floor since noon Monday said, “I'm so grateful for their support. There has been a crowd out here all demanding my release, and they're doing what they can to show their resistance. They're tired of this government overreach.” Twenty-four hours earlier, Republican House Speaker Dustin Burrows told Collier and the rest of the Democrats on the floor who had been absent the previous two weeks that they could not leave the House unless they were accompanied by a Texas Department of Public Safety agent or officer every minute they aren't in the Capitol. Collier refused the police escort, choosing instead to spend the night at her desk. In other news, Fort Worth police said Tuesday that a driver who was shot a day earlier while in traffic has died from his injury, and a suspect is now facing a murder charge in connection with the shooting. Police have not publicly disclosed the identity of the victim or the suspect as of Tuesday evening; new data shows electric vehicle sales in Texas continue to rise — but the charging network remains spotty. The automobile class represented just under 7% of the state's new light-duty vehicle sales in the first quarter of 2025, according to an analysis by the Alliance for Automotive Innovation; nd it's been nearly four years since Texas implemented one of the country's most strict and punitive abortion bans, ushering in the most seismic change to women's health care in a half-century. The Dallas Morning News set out to explore how overlapping abortion laws in Texas have altered the landscape of obstetric health care across the state. Through more than 100 interviews with physicians, researchers, healthcare experts, patients, and families, reporters documented deviations from what was in the best interest of the patient and other unintended consequences. “Standard of Fear,” a new investigative series, reveals how the abortion laws have been sweeping in their collateral damage, leaving patients, families, and medical providers caught in the middle. Michael Bates' journey from correctional officer to Deputy Director of Rehabilitation and Reentry at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice reveals what true transformation looks like, both personally and systemically. When Bates began his career in 2008, he saw TDCJ primarily through the lens of security and public safety. Today, he champions a more holistic vision: one where rehabilitation, dignity, and second chances stand alongside those crucial safety measures. His rapid rise through the ranks—becoming assistant warden at just 30 years old—taught him valuable lessons about leadership, humility, and the importance of experience. What makes this conversation particularly powerful is Bates' candor about his own shortcomings. He shares how his younger self lacked empathy for staff with family responsibilities, and how becoming a parent himself transformed his understanding of work-life balance. This personal growth mirrors the evolution he's helping lead throughout TDCJ, where innovative programs are changing lives daily. The Bartlett Innovation Unit stands as perhaps the most visible example of this new approach. Here, incarcerated individuals care for animals, receive vocational training, and participate in moving "bell ceremonies" when someone completes their sentence. Dressed in donated suits with jobs often already secured, these individuals ring a bell symbolizing their transition to freedom while the entire facility cheers them on.Bates also speaks truthfully about the mental and physical toll correctional work takes. His personal health journey—giving up Dr Pepper, meal prepping, and exercising despite grueling schedules—offers practical wisdom for anyone in demanding professions. His definition of "the good life" as achieving meaningful work-life balance resonates far beyond prison walls.Whether you work in corrections, public service, or simply care about how our justice system might better serve both public safety and human dignity, this conversation offers hope that through dedicated leadership and innovative approaches, transformation is possible—one person, one program, one bell ceremony at a time.If you are interested in donating a suit to the Bartlett Innovation Unit, please send to: 1018 Arnold Drive, Bartlett, Texas 76511. WESLACO, Texas - Hidalgo County Regional Mobility Authority Chairman Robert L. Lozano has made a plea for unity when it comes to transportation projects across the region.Lozano made his comments at a special meeting of the Rio Grande Valley Metropolitan Planning Organization policy board. He is a board member of the MPO.HCRMA did not get its proposal for more funding for Segment 4 of the Hidalgo County Loop project passed yet Lozano, in n effort to show unity, still voted for the staff recommendation of RGVMPO.“My message is the same one that I started with many months ago, it's a message of unity,” Lozano said. The special meeting of the RGVMPO policy board was called because the group is facing a hard deadline. If it does not spend the money it has accrued soon it runs the risk of losing future funding from the Texas Department of Transportation. The MPO has carried over $102 million in what is known as Category 7 funds. Year after year the MPO carries over the funds because many of the projects on its to do list are not shovel ready. In his remarks, Lozano pointed out that HCRMA does not normally seek Category 7 funding from the MPO. He said they made a pitch for funding for a particular segment of the County Loop because the MPO found itself in a “use it or lose it” situation.  “If the (RGVMPO) TAC (Technical Advisory Committee has a project and they know, they understand, that there's a unified desire to move this project forward, then I think that should influence the recommendation that the TAC is giving to the policy board, because they understand that in that community, in that area, that is what is being requested. That's what the need is. And the need is bubbling up in a unified fashion,” Lozano said.Lozano then answered his own question. Why did the RMA bring forward its proposal for Category 7 funding.“First, use it or lose it. Second, it's my understanding that the RMA historically has not requested Category 7 funds. However, all of y'all were witness to… the strong desire to accelerate Section A, 1 and 2,” Lozano said. Editor's Note: To read the full story go to the Rio Grande Guardian website. Go to www.riograndeguardian.com to read the latest border news stories and watch the latest news videos.

In this episode of Hearts of Oak, I welcome back Todd Bensman as he prepares to join the administration to tackle immigration challenges. Todd shares insights on the dramatic shifts in border enforcement since the Trump administration, including the decline in daily crossings and the need for increased deportations amid legal and infrastructure hurdles. We discuss the complexities of federal agency coordination, strategies against drug cartels related to the fentanyl crisis, and the role of tariffs to encourage Mexican cooperation. As Todd transitions to a policy advisor role, he reflects on navigating the political landscape within the Republican party while aiming for meaningful immigration reforms that balance national security with economic factors. Todd Bensman is an investigative author of the 2023 book OVERRUN, How Joe Biden Unleashed the Greatest Border Crisis in U.S. History (Posthill Press/Bombardier Books) and also America's Covert Border War: The Untold Story of the Nation's Battle to Prevent Jihadist Infiltration (Posthill Press/Bombardier Books, February 2021).   The two-time National Press Club award winner, a former journalist of 23 years, currently serves as the Texas-based Senior National Security Fellow for the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS), a Washington, D.C. policy institute for which he writes, speaks, and grants media interviews about the nexus between immigration and national security. He frequently reports from the southern border, traveling widely inside Mexico and in Central America. He has testified before Congress as an expert witness and regularly appears on radio and television outlets to discuss illegal immigration and border security matters.   He writes about homeland security and terrorism subjects for Newsweek Magazine, Homeland Security Today, The New York Post, The Daily Mail, Townhall, The Federalist, the Investigative Project on Terrorism, SpyTalk, The Daily Wire, The National Interest, and other publications. He serves as a Writing Fellow for the Middle East Forum and also teaches terrorism, intelligence analysis, and journalism as a university adjunct lecturer.   For nearly a decade prior to joining CIS in August 2018, Bensman led counterterrorism intelligence for the Texas Department of Public Safety's Intelligence and Counterterrorism Division and its multi-agency fusion center. Kim Lisa Taylor and Krisha Young of Syndication Attorneys PLLC welcome Homero Cabello Jr., the Deputy Executive Director at the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs. Homero shares insights from his decades of experience managing affordable housing programs and tax credit compliance that can be applied to projects nationwide. We'll discuss what it takes to qualify for Low-Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC), what entity structures their deals need to qualify, and how LIHTC programs benefit syndicators, investors and low income tenants. This knowledge is perfect for sponsors looking to enter or scale in affordable housing, or looking to maximize cash flow and tax benefits for their existing and future deals.  ChaptersIntroduction to LIHTC Programs and Types (00:04:40)Omero Cabello Jr. explained the two types of LIHTC programs: 9% program funding 70% of development costs, and 4% program with tax-exempt bonds funding about 80% of total development costs. He emphasized that each state must follow a qualified allocation plan dictating requirements and rules.Property Qualification and Requirements (00:07:28)Omero detailed that properties must maintain affordability for a minimum 30-year period. The program funds new construction, acquisition rehab, senior housing, and supportive housing for special needs populations.
