"I didn't grow up sailing, I didn't grow up climbing mountains, I didn't have anyone take me by the hand and lead me into those things. At one point in my life, much later in life, I made a choice and figured out a way to accomplish those things." Sara Hastreiter is a globe-exploring, international adventuring sailor and climber. It's Sara's goal to be the first woman ever to sail all 7 seas, and climb to the highest summits of the world's 7 continents. This feat would also see Sara become the first person in history to have competed in the Volvo Ocean Race (the 'Everest of Sailing'), and climbed Everest itself. During her career as a professional sailor, Sara has sailed the equivalent of 5 laps of the planet, and has no signs of slowing down. There really is something for everyone in this interview. She’s inspiring in a no nonsense way.
Sara Hastreiter was born and raised landlocked in Wyoming and did not get into sailing until well into her 20’s, but she did not let that slow her down. Working on boats in the Caribbean, she took every opportunity to get sea time; from island hopping to trans-Atlantic races, it did not matter, she signed up. With only a few years of sailing under her belt, she was asked to be a member of the all-female Team SCA that sailed around the world as a part of the 2014-15 Volvo Ocean Race, but even that challenge was not enough. Sara has now set her sights on becoming the first woman to sail the seven seas and climb the highest peaks on all seven continents. Take a listen as we talk with Sara about her sailing experiences, her climb up Denali, and what’s in store next.
Though it’s invisible and formless, the wind is one of the most formidable forces in the universe. In this episode, three guests reflect on their life-changing experience with the wind, inviting a new sense of awe for the natural world. A professional storm-chaser known as “the tornado hunter,” Greg Johnson recalls the terror and wonder of getting caught in one of the most monstrous tornados ever recorded. Sailor/adventurer Sara Hastreiter looks back on competing in a nine-month-long race across the planet, and on living at the mercy of the wind’s erratic temperament. And in a poignant merging of story and song, Ojibwe teacher Jacqui Lavalley reveals how the increasingly catastrophic storms of recent years are the Earth’s way of responding to the damage humans have done to our environment. On this months episode, Sara Hastreiter joins Abby for the latest Sailing Show, Sara is a close colleague having competed together in the Volvo Ocean Race with Team SCA. Following that circumnavigation Sara has tacked over to challenges in the mountains, so we learn about the similarities and differences between Ocean racing and Mountain climbing. Sara is a great role model as someone who knows how to take on a challenge for good cause, and for turning dreams into reality. #235. Sara Hastreiter is of course one of the members of Team SCA, the all-female crew in the previous edition of the Volvo Ocean Race. Sara was on the podcast back in 2015, immediately following that Volvo to talk about how she went from horseback riding in Wyoming to sailing in one of the world’s premier ocean races. I got to speak with her again in March about what it felt like to be left off the Volvo race this time, her mountaineering expeditions in the Himalayas and her ‘Seven Seas, Seven Summits’ project, speaking at the Explorer’s Club in New York, continuing to race on multihulls around the world, and her goals to inspire young people to follow their dreams. On the Wind is presented by Rutgerson Marin. And also supported by Adlard Coles, and Weems & Plath.
#212. RECYCLED. Sara Hastreiter sailed in the previous Volvo Ocean Race aboard the all-women Team SCA, skippered by Dee Caffari. Sara's off mountaineer for this year's event, set to sail on October 22. But Dee Caffari is heading up the mixed-crew team on 'Turn the Tide on Plastic,' so you know who I'll be rooting for this year! Mia & I met and sailed with Sara in NYC a few years back, and I had a chance to talk to her on Skype immediately following the last Volvo.

#115 is Sara Hastreiter, crewmember aboard Team SCA in the most recent Volvo Ocean Race. Sara's been featured in the NY Times, on NPR, in the Wall Street Journal and other places as her star has risen in the sailing world. She only got started in 2008 after moving from Wyoming to St. Croix, and getting work on charter boats and racing yachts in the Caribbean. It had always been a goal to reach the pinnacle of the sport, and she did that with Team SCA. Sara and Andy discussed her career and what it's like ocean racing on a VO65 for over an hour, Sara speaking on Skype from her new home base in the UK. Want to go ocean sailing with Andy?
