In this episode of Recycled Content, APR Technical Director Scott Trenor takes over hosting duties to explore the FDA's role in ensuring recycled plastics are safe for use in food packaging with guest Sean Fischer, an FDA Regulatory Review Scientist within the Division of Food Contact Substances. The two dive into the evaluation process, and critical need behind the FDA's No Objection Letters (NOL), an official statement from the FDA signaling that the agency has reviewed a recycling process and has no concerns about its ability to produce material suitable for food-contact use. The conversation also tackles common misconceptions, international alignment with Europe's EFSA, and how recyclers can better navigate regulatory pathways. Tune in to hear how recycled plastics move from curbside collection to safe, food-contact applications, and what it means for the future of circular packaging.

In this Week 34 edition of the GMS Weekly Podcast, we cover the latest developments in the global ship recycling markets, with updates from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Turkey. This week's theme, Method to the Madness, highlights frustrating conditions, softer pricing, and uneven buyer activity across the sub-continent. Global Overview: Oil edged up 0.2% to USD 63 per barrel as Ukraine conflict pressures continued. The Baltic Dry Index rose 2.7%, with gains across capes, panamaxes, and smaller segments. Supply of recycling candidates remains limited despite recent LNG and tanker arrivals. Prices have cooled and are holding at lower post-HKC levels. Bangladesh: Market flat with no new arrivals or deliveries reported. Demand for smaller LDT units is absent, while only select large capes draw interest. Recycled steel continues to stockpile as mills import cheaper raw material. The Taka weakened to 121.65 against the dollar. Economic and political uncertainty persists, keeping buyers away. India: Alang remains the busiest and most reliable recycling destination despite sanctions and tariff pressure. About 140,000 LDT currently at anchorage or delivered, including another LNG and tanker. Steel prices improved slightly to USD 436 per ton; the Rupee firmed to 87.33. Concerns remain about Chinese steel imports undercutting domestic values. Pakistan: Still offering the highest prices in the region at USD 622 per ton. Market activity is muted with limited arrivals and few workable candidates. Yards with DASRs are holding back for larger vessels. The Rupee strengthened to 283.15, but inflation and investor outflows add risk. Pakistan remains the best-priced location for quick deals if supply improves. Turkey: The Lira slipped again to 40.91, briefly above 41. Government imposed a ban on direct vessel calls to and from Israel, cutting supply potential. Inflation is easing, but Aliaga's yards remain without new arrivals. It's Thursday, and that means it's time to catch up on politics with Stephanie Grace, editorial director and columnist for The Times Picayune/New Orleans Advocate. We hear about the latest candidate to challenge Sen. Cassidy's (R-La.) seat in Congress, and whether or not President Trump will weigh in on the election. Earlier this month, the Trump administration issued a two-year exemption to an EPA rule that aims to curb pollution and cancer risks for those who live near industrial plants. The move affects a dozen Louisiana petrochemical companies and the communities that surround them. Some say the proclamation will endanger the health of people who live in the Mississippi River Industrial Corridor and the Lake Charles area. Coastal Desk reporter Eva Tesfaye joins us to discuss the potential impacts. The Glass Recycling Foundation's 2024 report says only about a third of the glass in the U.S. is recycled annually . About 9 million tons of glass ends up in landfills each year. And this is despite the fact that glass is endlessly recyclable.A group in New Orleans is trying to change that. Glass Half Full began their efforts in the backyard of a fraternity house, and over the last five years, they've become a force in glass recycling in the Gulf South.Franziska Trautmann, co-founder of Glass Half Full, tells us more about how recycled glass can help restore the coast. ___Today's episode of Louisiana Considered was hosted by Bob Pavlovich. “Our job is to recycle so that we can recover all of that scrap and goods that you and I are recycling in our garbage bins every week or recycling as we get new cars. And our job is to recover that because we make steel in a very clean and efficient process through what's called an electric arc furnace. So, we take all of that scrap, we melt it down, and we make new steel. It does not degrade. It has a continuous reusable life.…Depending on the different products of steel, that actually determines the recycled content that goes into them for the finishes and the quality of the steel that's needed.” Tabitha Stine on Electric Ladies Podcast With tariffs on steel and the Nippon Steel-U.S. Steel merger back in the news, we wanted to replay this important conversation on the impact of steel on the environment and how “recycled steel” works. “The production and use of materials such as cement, steel, and aluminum have a significant carbon footprint,” according to the UN, with construction 37% of emissions. But is recycled steel safe? Listen to Tabitha Stine, General Manager of Energy Solutions and Services at Nucor Corporation, which says it's “North America's largest steel manufacturer and recycler.” She'll explain how recycled steel is made and more in this fascinating conversation with Electric Ladies host Joan Michelson. They also share insightful career advice. You'll hear about: How recycled steel is made and where the steel comes from that is recycled. How structurally sound recycled steel is and how it's tested to make sure and meet building codes. Which industries use recycled steel, why, and how the demand and supply line up. How the steel industry is adapting to ensure automobiles and buildings are resilient to the ravages of climate change, including innovations in the works. Plus, insightful career advice, such as… “Usually what holds people back is, people are not willing to raise their hand. And then you go 10 years and you haven't had guidance because maybe you have a manager that doesn't give you feedback. You have to advocate for yourself. You are your advocate. There are no others. You've got to assume nobody else will except for yourself and you go for it. And I would also stress that if you're also not mentoring others at every stage along your career, you're missing out on a big opportunity,” Tabitha Stine on Electric Ladies Podcast Read Joan's Forbes articles here. In this episode, explore three ways NREL researchers are seeking out energy solutions: An experiment dubbed “No Photon Left Behind” examined if growing tomatoes under the filtered light spectrum of a semitransparent photovoltaic panels would make them grow faster, bigger, and tastier. The BOTTLE consortium at NREL released a paper recently that looked at new methods for recycling carbon fiber composites, the high-strength, low weight materials made from epoxy-amine resins that encase long carbon fibers and form a stiff material found in many consumer products like bicycles, planes, and cars. NREL researchers are using an advanced imaging tool called x-ray nanoscale computed tomography imaging – or nano-C-T imaging, to analyze batteries at the end of their useful life and reveal hidden flaws that give us insights into how battery materials change during its life. Sabine Marcelis is a Rotterdam-based designer and artist who, in her own words, is ‘forever in search of magical moments within materials'. She's probably best known for her work in glass, resin and stone, which often plays with light and water. However, most recently, she has been part of R100, a project with Hydro, which asks a group of internationally renowned designers to create pieces from 100 per cent post-consumer aluminium, sourced and produced within a 100-kilometre radius. It will be shown at Material Matters Copenhagen at Gammel Dok, Christianshavn from 18-20 June. Over the years, Sabine has collaborated with brands such as Vitra, Renault and IKEA and won numerous awards, including Designer of the Year at the Dezeen Awards in 2024 and the Monocle magazine Designer of the Year in 2023.In this episode we talk about: working with Hydro's recycled aluminium; trying to find the limits of any project; not designing chairs; her relationship with resin and how best to use it; fountains; working in Mies' Barcelona Pavilion; learning from IKEA; growing up on a flower farm; snowboarding; fighting for her ideas in Eindhoven; never wanting to work for anyone else; forging her studio in Rotterdam; and finding inspiration in unexpected places. The team takes on the “Blue Glue Gun, Green Glue Gun” tongue twister—and it does not go well. Mocha plays Roz a viral video of a little girl singing Moana on a delayed flight, and Roz is immediately annoyed. Plus: the poor people habits we just can't quit, the most demanding bridezilla ever, Maurie recycling the same Pride jokes for a fourth year, and ride-to-work times that make Roz question everything. Also: Shem returns with a May recap song, and Roz accuses everyone of Wordle cheating.
Right now, we're facing an impossible moment in beauty. Brands are under pressure to create fully recyclable packaging. Consumers are expected to recycle correctly, often with confusing or incomplete information. And regulators are pushing for urgent change, without enough funding or infrastructure in place to support it. Everyone is trying, but the system isn't ready, and no one is winning. In this week's Green Beauty Conversations episode, host Lorraine Dallmeier, biologist, Chartered Environmentalist and CEO of Formula Botanica, breaks down the messy and confusing state of recycling in the beauty industry. If you've ever stood in front of a recycling bin unsure of what to do or felt frustrated by the mixed messages around sustainable packaging, this episode is a must-listen. #212 Melissa and Jam explore the concept of ozone and its impact on air quality in airplanes. Melissa explains the chemical reaction of ozone, why it's significant in organic chemistry, and how it can lead to discomfort in air travel by interacting with the oils on our skin. They also discuss various tips for flying and the potential benefits of noise-canceling headphones and lounge access for frequent flyers. The episode sheds light on why people often feel unwell on planes, highlighting the Pigpen Effect, where leftover oils from previous passengers can react with ozone to create a micro-cloud of pollutants. 00:00 Introduction to Ozone Lysis 00:09 Ozone Lysis in Organic Chemistry 00:25 Personal Anecdotes and Misconceptions 01:10 Ozone and Airplane Discomfort 01:49 Chemistry of Airplane Air 02:41 Ozone Lysis and Human Interaction 06:44 Catalytic Converters in Airplanes 11:58 The Pigpen Effect 16:50 Historical Context and Modern Concerns 18:38 Recap and Further Discussion 20:23 Understanding the Pigpen Effect 20:58 Chemical Reactions of Aldehydes and Ketones 22:11 Volatility and Airplane Air Quality 22:42 The Gross Reality of Airplane Seats 23:31 Airplane Hygiene and Mask-Wearing 25:08 Flying Tips and Tricks 29:54 Travel Credit Cards and Lounge Access 34:36 Sleeping on Planes and Noise-Canceling Headphones 37:43 Final Thoughts and Community Engagement ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★ ★ Buy Podcast Merch and Apparel ★ Check out our website at chemforyourlife.com Watch our episodes on YouTube Find us on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook @ChemForYourLife References from this episode: https://cen.acs.org/safety/consumer-safety/Periodic-Graphics-chemistry-airplane-air/102/i26 https://www.acs.org/catalyzing-change/when-a-good-relationship-turns-toxic-ozone-on-airplanes.html https://pubs-acs-org.libproxy.library.unt.edu/doi/full/10.1021/es3046795 https://youtu.be/hM9P1_Xuayk?t=107s https://www.faa.gov/sites/faa.gov/files/data_research/research/med_humanfacs/cer/OzonePassengerCabins.pdf https://www.faa.gov/sites/faa.gov/files/data_research/research/med_humanfacs/cer/OzonePassengerCabins.pdf https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3683839/ Thanks to our monthly supporters Vince W Julie S. Recycled plastics reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30 to 80 percent compared to creating new plastics. But the process isn't always waste-free.Eureka Recycling, a 20-year-old mission-driven zero-waste recycler, has upgraded its facility to ensure recycled materials are effectively repurposed.“It's incredible how much less energy it takes,” said Miriam Holsinger, co-President and COO of Eureka Recycling. “We really work hard to keep the material we sort as local as possible — a lot of it stays right here in Minnesota, where it gets turned into new products, and 95 percent of what we sort actually stays in the Midwest.” Holsinger spoke with MPR News chief meteorologist Paul Huttner about how the climate can benefit from recycling materials.
