Well guys if you are currently multi - tasking this is your warning you may become completed distracted and absorbed in this episode. I recently sat down with Meg Reilly from the Magenta Project. An inspiring story, about a collective of passionate people committed to developing pathways and generating opportunities for more equity and inclusion in sailing, leading with gender. Meg shares how she and others work with a wide range of individuals and organisations to make a positive and progressive impact on the sport, from grassroots initiatives to partnerships with international events and leagues. Established by the sailors of the successful campaign of Team SCA in the Volvo Ocean Race 2014-2015, Meg shares the challenges and how the concept was embraced with early uptake of sponsors blind spot. The sporting side of boating has similar goals and big dream like me, that include increased participation, and I loved hearing their strategies of how they are also striving to reach gender parity in sport — equal pay and equal play. Boating is not just for the rich and famous as I say every episode. And today I am spending time with the person and the front of helm who is carving up swell and paving the sandy pathways for more diversity and inclusion across the board. TMP have just release a great article that shares their success. In this month's edition of the podcast, Shirley Robertson sits down face to face with one of offshore sailing's most accomplished sailors, as she talks to British offshore trail blazer, Dee Caffari.Caffari's achievements are well documented, she holds multiple 'firsts', she's sailed around the planet six times, completed two Volvo Ocean Races, spent months alone at sea sailing 'the wrong way around' and finished a Vendee Globe in it's most attritional edition ever. And she's achieved all of that after a sudden and unexpected career change in her mid twenties...:"I don't fit the mould, I think that's what confuses everybody, and they can't pigeon hole me, they can't put me into a box so I always feel on the outside a little bit. I grew up dancing, I didn't grow up sailing!"From the outset Robertson and Caffari's discussion is frank and honest. Dee reveals the catalysts that saw her turn away from a successful and established career to take a chance on making it in the world of sailing. Her story is inspiring, and before long she was skippering a yacht of amateurs in the 2004 Global Challenge race. That successful endeavour kick started an unparalleled career that first saw her become the first woman ever to sail around the world solo non-stop against the prevailing winds and currents. From there a Vendee Globe campaign onboard "Aviva" lead to a sixth place finish in an edition of the gruelling race that saw just eleven boats complete the course."In 2008 there were thirty entires, and only eleven finished, completed the race. In the war of attrition, which the Vendee is known for, the odds are pretty much always against you. But for me the big thing was to stand in the skippers' line up! I hadn't grown up in that environment and I'd literally just exchanged my 42 ton steel tank for an 8 ton carbon fibre race machine!"Episode One of this two part podcast finishes as Dee Caffari sails across the start line of the 24 000 mile Vendee Globe. Her journey non stop solo around the world is then picked up as the duo continue their chat in Part 2.Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/sailingpodcast)
In this month's edition of the podcast, Shirley Robertson sits down face to face with one of offshore sailing's most accomplished sailors, as she talks to British offshore trail blazer, Dee Caffari. In Part One of the podcast, Robertson talks about her journey into sailing and her decision to leave an established job in search of adventure. In this edition of the podcast, now well in to her sailing career Caffari continues her account of her non stop solo around the planet adventure sailing the distinctive yellow "Aviva" around the planet in the Vendee Globe.Post Vendee the pair discuss Caffari's thoughts on what was her third circumnavigation and touch on her next adventure, the Barcelona World Race, before discussing Caffari's experiences in the Volvo Ocean Race.It is undeniable that both Robertson and Caffari have forged incredibly successful sailing careers, in a world that is, also undeniably, male-centric. Talk therefore inevitably turns towards this aspect of the sport, as Caffari offers some enlightening insights into her first Volvo Ocean Race campaign with all-women campaign Team SCA. The pair share the opinion that it's a great shame it needs to be discussed, but that there are clearly very limited opportunities for women in the professional world of sailing.Staying with the Volvo Ocean, Caffari then discusses the 2017-18 edition that saw her skipper a young crew onboard "Turn the Tide on Plastic" before the pair finally reflect on the extraordinary nature of Caffari's career and the landmarks she has achieved. This edition of the podcast is in two parts and is available to listen to via the podcast page of Shirley's own website, at www.shirleyrobertson.com/podcast or via most popular podcast outlets, including Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcast and aCast. Abby's guest on this episode is Justine Mettraux, a Swiss sailor who grew up navigating the waters of Lake Geneva with her four siblings. She began sailing competitively as a teenager, before quickly rising through the ranks as one to watch. In 2013, she came second in the Mini-Transat before joining the all-female crew onboard Team SCA, led by offshore sailing legend, Sam Davies, for the 2014-15 Volvo Ocean Race. Justine officially joined 11th Hour Racing Team in 2021, following a transatlantic training run with the crew in 2020. She will co-skipper the team's existing IMOCA 60, known as 11th Hour Racing Team - ALAKA'I, with British navigator, Simon Fisher. They are currently leading the IMOCA Globe Series so will be a strong contender going into the Transat Jaques Vabres Race, a double handed race from Normandie, France to the Caribbean Island of Martinique. To kick off this episode Abby taps into the knowledge and experience of record breaking sailor Dee Caffari to seek her insights into who we should be looking out for in this tactical and exciting race across the Atlantic.Host: Abby EhlerRecorded: November 3, 2021For more information, links and resources and hundreds more conversations from the world of women's sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com. This week our guest is Annie Lush, a two-time competitor in The Ocean Race, and British Olympic sailor. Annie talks about getting her start in offshore racing with the all-female Team SCA, sailing with Bouwe Bekking's Team Brunel in the last edition and breaking her back in the Southern Ocean, and she tells us about the thrill of crewed IMOCA sailing with Offshore Team Germany.
Libby Greenhalgh is a sailor, navigator, meteorologist and advocate for increased opportunities for women to compete in top-class sailing through The Magenta Project. On this week's Off Watch episode Libby takes us inside the campaign with Team SCA in 2014-15, and remembers John Fisher, her crewmate aboard Sun Hung Kai/Scallywag who was tragically lost overboard during the last edition. Libby also opens up about the responsibilities of being a navigator, and she gives strong advice to the organisers of The Ocean Race about equality rules for the next race.
Annemieke Bes is an Olympic silver medallist for the Netherlands
Annie Lush is a former triple Match Racing World Champion and Olympic competitor. In 2014/15 she competed in the Volvo Ocean Race with Team SCA, becoming part of the first ever female team to win a leg of the race. At university Annie was part of the successful Cambridge University rowing crew who beat Oxford to the finish line of the Boat Race by the smallest recorded margin in the race's history in 2001. She says this is what inspired her to pursue a career in competitive sport and has been on the water everyday since. She is currently competing on the World Match Racing Tour with Team Magenta 32, the first female team to be awarded a tour card in the 22 year history of the World Match Racing Tour. The team have also set up The Magenta project, an NGO which aims to advance women in professional sailing and inspire and support developing female sailors.

Sara Hastreiter was born and raised landlocked in Wyoming and did not get into sailing until well into her 20’s, but she did not let that slow her down. Working on boats in the Caribbean, she took every opportunity to get sea time; from island hopping to trans-Atlantic races, it did not matter, she signed up. With only a few years of sailing under her belt, she was asked to be a member of the all-female Team SCA that sailed around the world as a part of the 2014-15 Volvo Ocean Race, but even that challenge was not enough. Sara has now set her sights on becoming the first woman to sail the seven seas and climb the highest peaks on all seven continents. Take a listen as we talk with Sara about her sailing experiences, her climb up Denali, and what’s in store next.
Shirley Robertson talks all things offshore with celebrated British offshore adventurer Sam Davies. With a submarine commander as one grandfather and a boat builder as the other, it should be no surprise that Cambridge engineering graduate Sam Davies pursued a career that now sees her racing around the planet. But as she reveals in this illuminating chat, offshore sailing’s loss was very nearly synchronised swimming’s gain, after an early passion for life in the pool almost saw her follow a very different career path.An early career spent racing with British sailing trail blazer Tracy Edwards soon saw Sam craving a life out at sea, and It was in those early days, chasing the illusive around the world record, the Jules Verne Trophy that Sam glimpsed the potential, inspired by the pro-active spirit and determination of Edwards, as she realised that if she really dug in, anything could be possible. As her career took off, an early deviation towards the Olympic arena saw her team up with the podcast's very own Shirley Robertson back when she was campaigning for Athens 2004 in the technical keel boat, the Yngling. Robertson was drawn to the can-do professionalism of the young bowman, but it was a collaboration that wouldn’t go the distance. The pair here laugh over the early campaign days as Sam began to realise that the monotony of Olympic campaigning really wasn’t for her - that her sailing life lay further out to sea. And so began her march to the forefront of Britain's considerable offshore sailing elite. Her career took the inevitable turn towards the solo marathon the Vendee Globe, and in 2008 she crossed the start line in one of the most recognisable boats the race has ever seen. It was a performance that would rocket her to household name status in France, as she resolutely sailed “Roxy” nonstop around the planet in just over ninety five days, one of just eleven finishers from a field of thirty. It was a remarkable achievement. Davies does reveal though the cost of her disappointment in the following Vendee, after a hard fought campaign to get to the start line lasted just five days out on the race course. But very quickly, she was back at the helm, the Vendee forgotten, as she took on a very different role skippering the all female ’Team SCA’ in the Volvo Ocean Race. Sam is currently looking forward to her third Vendee Globe campaign, this time as skipper of the inspirational “Initiative Coeur” - a campaign actively saving the lives of disadvantaged children around the world - it’s an innovative approach to raising money, that Sam passionately explains, whereby the effect of her sponsors' donations, achieved through Sam’s interaction with her fan base, reveals very tangible results.
On this episode of The Sailing Show, Abby Ehler talks to Swiss solo sailor, Justine Mettraux about her Figaro campaign and her pathway into the Figaro circuit. Justine first competed in the Mini Transat series back in 2013 and went onto compete in the Volvo Ocean Race in 2014-15 with Team SCA. Justine is now in her 4th consecutive year in the Figaro circuit, and is joins us fresh from the first Figaro event of this season: The Solo Maitre Coq, finishing 9th in a fleet of 47, a fantastic result in such a competitive fleet. Abby’s second guest is record breaking round the world sailor, Dee Caffari. Dee has sailed around the world six times. She is the first woman to have sailed single-handed and non-stop around the world in both directions and the only woman to have sailed non-stop around the world a total of three times. Dee gives her advice and opinions on advancing through the sport of sailing, or even advancing your career in professional yachting. Drawing on her experience as a skipper of a young crew in the last Volvo Ocean Race, she shares what she was looking for when selecting her crew. Great advice for any ambitious sailor. If you think about sailing a yacht round the world, what image comes into your mind? Fantastic sunsets, calm seas, whales and dolphins appearing intermittently, and balmy days in a bikini? Yep, me too. The reality of round-the-world ocean racing is somewhat different: I’m sure the wildlife encounters can be pretty special and there are no doubt some spectacular sunsets, but yachts sail 24/7 during their legs at sea and the Volvo Ocean Race is well-known to be one of the toughest sporting events in the world. It is certainly the longest, and involving 9 months at sea, enormous physical and mental human challenge and a daily battle against the elements. Yacht racing is also one of the few sports where men and women compete alongside one another, although it has traditionally been a male-only domain, and for centuries it was considered bad luck to take a woman to sea on your boat. Times are fortunately changing, and my guest this week is Abby Ehler, now veteran of 3 Volvo Ocean Races, including this year’s voyage, where she was part of Team Brunel that placed third overall after a gruelling 9 months of sailing. Abby was previously the boat captain for Team SCA, the first all-female team to compete for 12 years when they took part in the Volvo Ocean Race in the 2014-15 competition. Over 250 women applied for 15 spots on that boat, so clearly there is an appetite for women to compete at the very highest levels within the sport. Off the back of Team SCA, the Magenta Project was founded to promote and encourage women at the top end of sailing. Abby is now their Director of Media and Events. in addition to being a mum to her son and racing regularly both at home and abroad. In this interview we disuss: -How Abby got into sailing - What the Volvo Ocean Race entails - Her hairiest and scariest adventures - How changes to the rules of sailing this year helped more women to be involved at the highest levels - The establishment of the Magenta Project and their support of women in elite sailing - The future of the sport, including the Volvo Ocean Race and Abby's hopes for women in sailing in the years to come Abby is on Twitter @trimore and Instagram @abbyehler and you can find the Magenta Project on social media @themagentaproj. Their website is www.themagentaproject.org More info on the Volvo Ocean Race can be found at www.volvooceanrace.com and if you're interested in getting started in sailing then the best place to go is the RYA website www.rya.org.uk Enjoy!
#235. Sara Hastreiter is of course one of the members of Team SCA, the all-female crew in the previous edition of the Volvo Ocean Race. Sara was on the podcast back in 2015, immediately following that Volvo to talk about how she went from horseback riding in Wyoming to sailing in one of the world’s premier ocean races. I got to speak with her again in March about what it felt like to be left off the Volvo race this time, her mountaineering expeditions in the Himalayas and her ‘Seven Seas, Seven Summits’ project, speaking at the Explorer’s Club in New York, continuing to race on multihulls around the world, and her goals to inspire young people to follow their dreams. On the Wind is presented by Rutgerson Marin. And also supported by Adlard Coles, and Weems & Plath.
Abby Ehler knows what it's like to sail around the world having been the Boat Captain on Team SCA in the 2015/6 Edition of the Volvo Ocean Race. The grueling intensity of ever-changing conditions combined with sleep deprivation and dried food tests the best but the lure of the ocean and battling the elements in all corners of the globe somehow brings them back for more. This time Abby is Boat Captain for Team Brunel and as the race stops over in Hong Kong, she is taking a leg off and will return to the boat in Auckland refreshed and driven to lead the fleet as they set sail into the Southern Ocean once more. Abby will be racing to the finish line and relishes the challenges ahead. Chris Stafford caught up with her while she was home in England for some R& R, fresh food and family time to hear what has been the most intense part of the race so far and why she's enjoying being on a mixed team. #212. RECYCLED. Sara Hastreiter sailed in the previous Volvo Ocean Race aboard the all-women Team SCA, skippered by Dee Caffari. Sara's off mountaineer for this year's event, set to sail on October 22. But Dee Caffari is heading up the mixed-crew team on 'Turn the Tide on Plastic,' so you know who I'll be rooting for this year! Mia & I met and sailed with Sara in NYC a few years back, and I had a chance to talk to her on Skype immediately following the last Volvo.
Abby Ehler from The Magenta Project is back with friends who are taking part in this year's Volvo Ocean Race. Olympian Annie Lush, who was also on Team SCA in the previous edition of the race, has joined Abby on Team Brunel, and another Olympian, Italy's Francesca Clapcich, is on Dee Caffari's Turn the Tide on Plastic. They discuss the dynamics of the new mixed crew format, why you would endure freeze dried food for months, necessary medical skills and other training, crew rotation and final preparations in the countdown to the race that begins with the prologue from Lisbon to Alicante on October 8th followed by the race start on October 22. The 44 year old will lead a 50-50 mixed gender crew with the emphasis on youth while campaigning for a cause that she is passionate about to Turn the Tide on Plastic. This will be a highlight in her career—her sixth round the world trip— in which she has already sailed solo non-stop in both directions breaking records for women in the process. Dee made her debut in the Volvo Ocean Race in the 2014-15 edition with the all-female crew of Team SCA that won the Lisbon - Le Havre leg as well as heading the fleet twice during in-port race and finishing third in the in-port series. Dee will now be breaking new records while making history for women in sailing and Chris Stafford caught up with her just after the announcement was made. This is just a sampling of Dee Caffari's achievements under sail from her website: "In 2006 Dee became the first woman to sail solo, non-stop, around the world against the prevailing winds and currents and was awarded an MBE in recognition of her achievement. Dee successfully completed the solo, non-stop Vendée Globe Race in 2009, crossing the finish line in 6th place out of an original fleet of 30 competitors. April 2011 saw Dee complete her third non-stop circumnavigation in the double-handed Barcelona World Race. In 2014, as part of Team SCA taking part in the Volvo Ocean Race 2014/15, Dee secured the Round Britain and Ireland Speed Record for an all-female crewed monohull of 4 days 21 hrs 39 secs." We talk about the Hell On High Water TV charity drive, Team SCA, how average sailors can become a better racers, and sleeping strategies while solo sailing in ocean races. Check out her great book, Against the Flow, available on audible about how she went from being a school teacher who had never sailed before to being the first woman in history to sail solo-nonstop around the world against the prevailing winds and currents. It's an inspiring story about following your dreams and an entertaining listen or read. Sara's been featured in the NY Times, on NPR, in the Wall Street Journal and other places as her star has risen in the sailing world. She only got started in 2008 after moving from Wyoming to St. Croix, and getting work on charter boats and racing yachts in the Caribbean. It had always been a goal to reach the pinnacle of the sport, and she did that with Team SCA. Sara and Andy discussed her career and what it's like ocean racing on a VO65 for over an hour, Sara speaking on Skype from her new home base in the UK. Want to go ocean sailing with Andy? #101. I had a nice little chat with Elodie at the dock after sailing with Team SCA on their TP52 in New York. Elodie is one of the crewmembers with the Volvo Ocean Race's Team SCA, the first all-female crew in 12 years in the race. This is a bit shorter than normal, but Elodie has promised to come back on the show for a longer chat after the Volvo, so look forward to that! For now, enjoy a few minutes with Elodie Mettraux of Team SCA! Want to go ocean sailing with Andy? Book a berth on Isbjorn, our classic Swan 48, at 59-north.com/offshore.

“It doesn’t have to be around the world. Everybody has their own challenge to face and it’s having the confidence that you can do it. You’ll be amazed at what you can achieve. If we can do this {sail around the world} you can do it.” ~Dee Caffari The first all female crew in over a decade is embarking on one of the greatest races of all time; sailing around the world in the Volvo Ocean Race. The crew of fourteen consists of moms, a world record holder, a journalist, a meteorologist, a cowgirl, an engineer, a community organizer; basically an incredibly dedicated group of sailors who have been training for over two years. Team SCA is covering approximately 40,000 miles over several months in a race that is referred to as the Mt. Everest of sailing. It’s a feat that many would consider impossible but crew member Dee Caffari believes that everything is possible with the right training and determination. In fact, the crew goes beyond the sea to inspire other women and teach them tips and techniques to live healthy lives and in full potential.
20 July 2014: Another week, and another jam packed show with Adventures of a Sailor Girl herself, Nic Douglass. Nic covered the main story in sailing this week, that Team Australia has withdrawn from the America's Cup. The reason why is a mystery that will no doubt develop more over the coming weeks, and Nic will keep you posted. We heard a replay with Stacey Jackson, of Team SCA, as the Canary Islands race, the first official Volvo Ocean Race warmup, is now underway. Nic also caught up with her roving reporter, Nina Curtis, Olympic silver medallist on that has been happening for her, both the ups and downs! Finally the Sailor Girl covered some of her own adventures, including the snow, and a pretty amazing photo shoot with Ana Andres-Arroyo Photography on Rose Bay beach, at Nic's favourite time of day, sunset! Next week, Nic will be doing a live broadcast for the start of the Sydney to Gold Coast race on 26 July as well as her normal show at 6pm AEST on 27 July.
6 July 2014: So many adventures, and the weekend is just not enough time to squeeze them all in! Great to catch up with Australia's newest World Champs, Jesse Dobie and Adrian Fawcett, who took out the F16 Worlds in Newport last week. We managed to wake Jason Waterhouse up on the morning of his next regatta. He will be on the water with Lisa Darmanin on the Nacra this week, after wrapping up his first A Class regatta. Nic wore pink for the show to support for Stace Jackson, who is part of the bow team for Team SCA, the all-female Volvo Ocean Race team. It is less than 100 days until the race kicks off! The Sailor Girl played a clip from Match Cup Sweden 2009, five years to the day from when she took out the event with Katie Spithill on the helm, and Stacey Jackson on the bow, as well as Sam Boyd, Olivia Price and Jess Eastwell. Nic also played a few clips and filled us in on her weekend on the water!
1 June 2014: What a massive show! Amazing to catch up with Howie Hamlin on his 5o5 North Americans win, and all that is ahead for him. Also touched base with Jason Waterhouse straight from Austria at the GC32's - too awesome! Last but definitely not least, Stacey Jackson called in from the Canary Islands to touch base about all that is happening for Team SCA leading up to the Volvo Ocean Race. I also had a very serious story about M&M's to share from my adventures!
#24. Magnus Olsson was on the Two Inspired Guys podcast a while back, and I'm relaunching this episode now on 59º North. I interviewed Magnus in downtown Stockholm, at the 'Sprit Museet' (Alcohol Museum) on Djurgården. Our boat Arcturus was tied up in the harbor there after we'd sailed her across the North Sea. Magnus and his partner Vica cycled down to the harbor and had coffee with us on Arcturus before he and I did the podcast. It was initially about an article I wrote for Yachting World on code sails, but turned into a discussion on sailing in general Magnus was truly larger than life, which comes through in this episode, and it was with great sadness that the sailing world learned of his passing last summer in Lanzarote, where he was training with Team SCA, the all-female entry in the next Volvo Ocean Race. I only knew him for short time, but it was a privilege. Thanks for the memories - and the podcast! - Magnus.
