The History of Italian Gymnastics traces the remarkable rise of one of the world's most successful gymnastics nations—from Italy's early Olympic champions and circus acrobatics roots to the Vanessa Ferrari revolution and today's powerhouse led by Alice D'Amato and Manila Esposito. We explore the forgotten pioneers, iconic eponymous skills, the dominance of Jury Chechi on rings, the 2019 breakthrough World medal, the unforgettable Paris Olympics, and whether Italy has what it takes to defeat Team USA during the Los Angeles quad. Along the way we revisit Vanessa Ferrari's controversial Olympic floor finals, the MTV series that made Italian gymnasts celebrities, and the innovations that changed the Code of Points forever. In anticipation of Disclosure Day, Steven Spielberg’s two most beloved alien films face off in the inaugural Filmspotting Movie Death Match. Representing Close Encounters of the Third Kind is Dr. Margaret A. Weitekamp, Chair of Space History at the National Air and Space Museum. Making the case for E.T. the Extra‑Terrestrial is longtime critic and author Jen Chaney. Host Chris Klimek presides. Which film better captures Spielberg’s vision of alien contact — and his ideas about the nuclear family? Vote at moviedeathmatch.com. Movie Death Match is a new Filmspotting podcast that determines which one of a pair of linked movies — each championed by a passionate and highly credentialed advocate — shall be preserved in perpetuity, and which one shall be lost to history. Through opening statements, formal debate rounds, and closing arguments, a single cinematic judge renders an irreversible verdict. One movie survives. One is erased. The ancient Olympics didn't allow women to compete, or even watch. However, there are a few ancillary ways that women participated: as horse owners and in the Heraean games. The modern Olympics made a half-hearted attempt to ban women too, but we snuck in as early as the year 1900. Helen de Pourtales, Charlotte Cooper, and Margaret Abbott were athletes who won that year. It has only grown since then. Visit the website (herhalfofhistory.com) for sources, transcripts, and pictures. Saskatchewan's first women's legal clinic has opened, offering no-cost, trauma-informed legal support for women and gender-diverse survivors of intimate partner violence. This fills a need for those who don't qualify for legal aid but can't afford private lawyers. To talk about this resource, Evan speaks with Violeta Dima, Managing Lawyer, Women's Legal Clinic and Nicole Obrigavitch, Executive Director of the Elizabeth Fry Society.
Watching Gidget as a little girl changed the entire course of Susie Terry's life. What started with a surfboard strapped through the sunroof of her mom's VW Bug turned into a lifetime of chasing waves, building community, and staying stoked well into her seventies. In this episode of Confessions of a Surf Lady, The First Women's Surfing Podcast™, I talk with Surfer Susie about growing up surfing in Ventura in the late 1950s, teaching herself how to surf before leashes or wetsuits existed, and what it's been like watching surf culture evolve over the decades. We also talk about aging, fitness, social media fame, and why surfing still gives her the same excitement it did as a little girl.Susie's energy is infectious. She's hilarious, grounded, wildly relatable, and a reminder that surfing doesn't have to stop at a certain age. If anything, her story shows how the ocean can keep giving back for an entire lifetime.

In our latest "Between the Lines" installment, we shine a light on the best-selling collection of inspirational profiles by former "CBS Evening News" anchor Norah O'Donnell – the New York Times best-seller We the Women: The Hidden Heroes Who Shaped America, written with journalist and author Kate Andersen Brower. Brower, our current podcast guest, a former White House reporter for Bloomberg News, has written for The New York Times, Vanity Fair, Time, and The Washington Post. She is also the author of several books of her own, including the #1 New York Times best-seller The Residence, which was adapted into the hit Netflix series of the same name by producer Shonda Rhimes, as well as numerous other books, including First Women, First in Line, and Team of Five. As she shares in our As Told To conversation, We the Women is her first collaboration, but it is not so very far removed from her work as a political reporter, and as a seasoned chronicler of lives lived in and around our seats of power. What happens when a ghostwriter/collaborator looks on as the subject of her latest book becomes the lede of a story neither one of them set out to tell? That's the question at the heart of this conversation with journalist Kate Andersen Brower, co-author of the New York Times best-seller We the Women: The Hidden Heroes Who Shaped America, written with "60 Minutes" correspondent and former "CBS Evening News" anchor Norah O'Donnell. We the Women presents a vivid portrait of the unsung women throughout American history who have changed the ways we work and live—a book Melinda French Gates calls "a vital reminder of the importance of women's contributions to our history, and a call to action for anyone committed to carrying forward the work that they began." About that call to action: in the aftermath of the shooting at the White House Correspondents' Dinner on April 25, 2026, O'Donnell sat with President Trump for a lengthy "60 Minutes" interview, during which the president berated her for having the temerity to ask him to respond to the gunman's manifesto. The president called her "horrible" and "a disgrace." O'Donnell pushed back, and by the Monday morning of our podcast interview, the heated exchange was making headlines and filling social media feeds all over the world. "It was tremendous to watch," observes Brower, "and I hope that it inspired some younger women watching to want to become journalists, and to want to ask these tough questions." Kate Andersen Brower knows what it means to work the political beat. A former White House reporter for Bloomberg News during the Obama administration, she has written for The New York Times, Vanity Fair, Time, and The Washington Post. She is the author of the #1 New York Times best-seller The Residence, which was adapted into the hit Netflix series of the same name by producer Shonda Rhimes, as well as numerous other books, including First Women, First in Line, and Team of Five. Join us for a candid conversation on what it takes to speak truth to power—and then, to find a way to write about it. Shakespeare wrote every word of his plays with the firm expectation that the female parts would be acted by men or boys. No female was allowed to act in a public theater. That would be shockingly indecent. In England, that expectation was dashed in a 1660 production of Othello. We know for sure that Desdemona was played by a woman. We're just not sure which woman it was. This episode explains how English theater came to accept women on the stage. Visit the website (herhalfofhistory.com) for sources, transcripts, and pictures. In this episode, I spoke with Mary Mallory about her book "First Women of Hollywood: Female Pioneers in the Early Motion Picture Business". Largely created by immigrants, the film industry evolved over its first few decades thanks to the work of people outside the traditional ruling class—immigrants, people of color, women—partly as a result of elites denigrating the fledgling field. As the moving picture industry transitioned from neophyte to powerhouse, young and ambitious rebels energized its output. follow Forgotten Hollywood on Facebook!

In 1961, a group of female pilots—today known as the Mercury 13—quietly aced NASA's toughest astronaut tests, even outperforming the Mercury men in some areas. But with the space race heating up, their mission was grounded— but not by science. But what became of America's first female astronaut candidates?Guests: Margaret Weitekamp, chair of the space history department at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum, and author of Right Stuff, Wrong Sex: America's First Women in Space Program andSpace Craze: America's Enduring Fascination with Real and Imagined Spaceflight Emily Calandrelli, engineer, author, and TV show host of Emily's Wonderlab and Xploration Outer Space
