RECYCLED #279. Dee Caffari is perhaps the most accomplished sailor I've ever had on the show, and she's easily the most inspiring. Dee has sailed around the world a full 6 times, 3 of them solo and nonstop, and most recently as skipper of the Turn the Tide on Plastic Volvo campaign. There isn't much she hasn't done in racing, whether solo or crewed, as skipper or in another role, but I took away much deeper insights from our conversation on things like leadership, psychology and inspiration. In this month's edition of the podcast, Shirley Robertson sits down face to face with one of offshore sailing's most accomplished sailors, as she talks to British offshore trail blazer, Dee Caffari. In Part One of the podcast, Robertson talks about her journey into sailing and her decision to leave an established job in search of adventure.  In this edition of the podcast, now well in to her sailing career Caffari continues her account of her non stop solo around the planet adventure sailing the distinctive yellow "Aviva" around the planet in the Vendee Globe.Post Vendee the pair discuss Caffari's thoughts on what was her third circumnavigation and touch on her next adventure, the Barcelona World Race, before discussing Caffari's experiences in the Volvo Ocean Race.It is undeniable that both Robertson and Caffari have forged incredibly successful sailing careers, in a world that is, also undeniably, male-centric.  Talk therefore inevitably turns towards this aspect of the sport, as Caffari offers some enlightening insights into her first Volvo Ocean Race campaign with all-women campaign Team SCA. The pair share the opinion that it's a great shame it needs to be discussed, but that there are clearly very limited opportunities for women in the professional world of sailing.Staying with the Volvo Ocean, Caffari then discusses the 2017-18 edition that saw her skipper a young crew onboard "Turn the Tide on Plastic" before the pair finally reflect on the extraordinary nature of Caffari's career  and the landmarks she has achieved. This edition of the podcast is in two parts and is available to listen to via the podcast page of Shirley's own website, at www.shirleyrobertson.com/podcast or via most popular podcast outlets, including Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcast and aCast. In this month's edition of the podcast, Shirley Robertson sits down face to face with one of offshore sailing's most accomplished sailors, as she talks to British offshore trail blazer, Dee Caffari.Caffari's achievements are well documented, she holds multiple 'firsts', she's sailed around the planet six times, completed two Volvo Ocean Races, spent months alone at sea sailing 'the wrong way around' and finished a Vendee Globe in it's most attritional edition ever.  And she's achieved all of that after a sudden and unexpected career change in her mid twenties...:"I don't fit the mould, I think that's what confuses everybody, and they can't pigeon hole me, they can't put me into a box so I always feel on the outside a little bit.  I grew up dancing, I didn't grow up sailing!"From the outset Robertson and Caffari's discussion is frank and honest.  Dee reveals the catalysts that saw her turn away from a successful and established career to take a chance on making it in the world of sailing.  Her story is inspiring, and before long she was skippering a yacht of amateurs in the 2004 Global Challenge race. That successful endeavour kick started an unparalleled career that first saw her become the first woman ever to sail around the world solo non-stop against the prevailing winds and currents.  From there a Vendee Globe campaign onboard "Aviva" lead to a sixth place finish in an edition of the gruelling race that saw just eleven boats complete the course."In 2008 there were thirty entires, and only eleven finished, completed the race.  In the war of attrition, which the Vendee is known for, the odds are pretty much always against you.  But for me the big thing was to stand in the skippers' line up!  I hadn't grown up in that environment and I'd literally just exchanged my 42 ton steel tank for an 8 ton carbon fibre race machine!"Episode One of this two part podcast finishes as Dee Caffari sails across the start line of the 24 000 mile Vendee Globe.  Her journey non stop solo around the world is then picked up as the duo continue their chat in Part 2.Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/sailingpodcast)

This week, the climate solutions are here, and they’re neatly labeled.   You may have heard of Bertrand Piccard, the explorer, balloonist, and ‘inspioneer’ who was the first to circumnavigate the globe in a solar powered aircraft in 2016. Well, since then, he’s been on a mission to support climate friendly technologies. With his Solar Impulse Foundation, he is close to having found, assessed and labeled 1000 cleantech solutions that have a positive impact on both the environment and the economy. Now he’s making sure that they get used. In our interview with him this week, we discuss his commitment to create and nurture innovative new ways of thinking that reconcile ecology and economy, providing a compelling argument for business and governments to act today to achieve planetary health and profit with his ‘Tao of Economics’.   And with Tom taking a well earned break away from hosting, we are delighted to introduce a special co-host for this episode, Dee Caffari, MBE! Dee is the first woman to have sailed single-handed and non-stop around the world in both directions and the only woman to have sailed non-stop around the world a total of three times! Dee Caffari MBE is a two-time Guinness World Record holding yachtswoman. She has sailed round the world no less than 6 times. Her first record, awarded in 2006, was for being the first woman to circumnavigate the globe solo and non-stop against the prevailing wind and tide (known as the Impossible Voyage) and the second, in 2008, for being the only woman to have sailed solo and non-stop around the world three times. She still holds both these titles. She is only one of five Impossible Voyagers to have EVER sailed “the wrong way” round the world solo and non-stop.She has led round-the-world crews, run marathons, campaigned for the environment, is on the board of charities, speaks and lectures to corporate clients and, as she strives to ever improve, has her sights firmly set on competing at the Paris 2024 Olympics when she will be 51.Having read her amazing book, “Against the Flow”, I was very keen to talk to Dee about the highs and lows of sailing as metaphors for life on land and how these have been valuable lessons in life, as well as the drama and adrenaline overload, however I found myself in a very different conversation than the one I had planned. Such is the absolute joy of speaking to women as amazing as Dee!The first half is very much chatting about the adventure aspect, the toughness of life at sea and basically me geeking out over the the hows and whys of sailing around the world.Gradually, however, we started to talk about teamwork, playing to people's strengths, trust, leadership skills, communication and how she has taken what she learned in some of the most extreme situations on the planet and uses them to teach people about using them in real life.We touched on how to encourage girls and young woman to stick with sailing despite the difficulties facing them during the awkward teenage years (no loos on boats, all male coaching and officials teams) and how more women are needed in the sport to make this more accessible for them. And then we talked environment and how sailing all the oceans of the world has highlighted the need to end our reliance on single use plastic and how we can all play an important role in this. Finally, we discussed going to the Olympics in your 50s and whether she thinks she has the appetite for another round the world voyage!I came off the call wishing I had asked 1000 more questions about the drama of solo sailing, her most vivid memories on the ocean and other things, but you'll just need to read her book to get a feel for the insane amount of grit and determination and a little bit of bonkersness needed to achieve such a feat!Such a privilege to have this much of Dee's time and energy. "Together". I am delighted to welcome our third guest Dee Caffari MBE, Yachtswoman and Motivational Speaker. Not satisfied with the once, Dee has sailed around the world six times. She is the first woman to have sailed single-handedly and non-stop around the world in both directions, and the only woman to have sailed non-stop around the world a total of three times. In 2006 Dee became the first woman to sail solo, non-stop, around the world against the prevailing winds and currents and was awarded an MBE in recognition of her achievement. Dee recently led ‘Turn the Tide on Plastic' – the first mixed gender youth team to compete in the Volvo Ocean Race 2017/18; with a strong sustainability message. Off the water, the issue of single use plastic in our oceans gained huge momentum and has inspired many people to take action in their day to day lives. Dee will continue to highlight the vital importance of reducing our dependence on plastics. Outside of sailing, Dee continues to showcase her talents as a presenter and on the motivational speaker circuit. Dee also spends time supporting her chosen charities and is Chair of the World Sailing Trust, a new global charity that will promote the health of oceans and grow participation of the sport to protect its future. https://www.deecaffari.co.uk/about/ --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/femaleleaderswithcourage/message

#279. For context for today's guest, those who know I'm avoiding flying might also know I'm learning to sail to explore off North America. When considering acting on their values, most people focus on the part they like of what they're stopping. They don't seem to have trouble ignoring undesired side-effects, like the pollution flying causes.Sailing and the other things I've replaced flying with have given far more than I could have predicted at a fraction what I used to spend on flying. Among its many benefits is the sailing community. In that community, today's guest, Dee Caffari, is off the charts. Once a school teacher, she started sailing to world-athlete levels. Now the international sailing community calls her a legend. Watch her videos. They look like they're from movies but they're her life, which she describes in our conversation. She's gone around the world in both directions, won races, led teams, been named an MBE. She shares her experiences, since sailing spans calm sunsets to life-and-death struggles with forces that can level cities. Her global vision has also revealed to her the growth in plastic, global warming effects, and other environmental problems. She works actively to reduce her personal impact and others'.With the level of change in everyone's lives to reverse the effects we've had on the earth, I find the magnitude of her change and how much she loves it refreshing. Most people act like the smallest change is too much. They want to learn how to keep doing what they're doing and still feel like they're changing. Dee Caffari is a renowned British Sailor, who recently led ‘Turn the Tide on Plastic’ – the first mixed gender youth team to compete in the Volvo Ocean Race 2017/18; with a strong sustainability message.  As part of the Ocean Respect Racing crew, made up of fully professional female crew, the team came within minutes of an overall win of the Sydney to Hobart Race, something crews spend years trying to attain.Rosalin Kuiper, 23, of the Netherlands, graduated from the Team Heiner Youth Academy in 2018, following 3 years of extensive training. The academy, run by Roy Heiner, covers all aspects of big boat sailing from boat handling to boat maintenance, mastering all the positions on board, racing by day and night, boat delivery, safety, and navigation etc. Rosalin’s ambition and perseverance saw her land a shore-side role with the 100ft maxi yacht INFOTRACK, vying for Sydney-Hobart line honors and through her hard work and work ethic she was offered a sailing position for the race itself, a dream job for anyone setting out on the professional sailing circuit.  For show notes and related links for this episode click HERE.
